Mind the Gap

Original air date: 9/14/2019

Annoyed with SpongeBob's whistling, Squidward patches up the gap in his teeth. This gives SpongeBob a smooth, cool voice and turns him into a great singer, which Squidward takes advantage of to get the opportunity to perform at a local jazz club.

"Mind the Gap" contains examples of:

  • Book Ends: The episode begins and ends with SpongeBob whistling a tune through his gap.
  • Bowdlerise: The UK airing of the episode removes the scenes of Squidward screwing SpongeBob's gap closed with a power drill and SpongeBob drinking bubble soap, most likely to prevent children from imitating that said behavior. The screw flying out from between SpongeBob's teeth is edited as well.
  • Either/Or Title: Promotional material calls the episode "CoolBob SmoothPants."
  • Extra-Long Episode: 12 minutes as opposed to the usual 11.
  • False Teeth Tomfoolery: When SpongeBob's gap opens up while he's singing, Squidward grabs an older fish's large dentures and sticks them inside SpongeBob's mouth. After he finishes singing, they fall out of his mouth and shatter on the ground.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Squidward's clarinet playing causes the cool patrons' glasses to break.
  • Gross-Up Close-Up: When the club owner sees Squidward standing next to CoolBob.
  • Head Desk: The club patrons do this in order to create gaps in their own teeth.
  • I'm Melting!: One club patron melts into puddle while swooning over CoolBob.
  • If I Can't Have You…: After getting kicked out of the club, Squidward sneaks back in and is prepared to strike SpongeBob with a mallet while saying, "If I'm not allowed to be cool anymore, then neither is SpongeBob."
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After dismissing SpongeBob and his whistling, Squidward's teeth crack and give him a gap as well- and is forced to pay for the damage caused by SpongeBob when he blew off the roof.
  • Shout-Out: SpongeBob shouting "Ladies!" when his gap breaks is a reference to late actor Jerry Lewis.
  • Vocal Dissonance: SpongeBob somehow gets a deep manly voice when the gap in his buck teeth is sealed.

Dirty Bubble Returns

Original air date: 11/23/2019

The Dirty Bubble has been cleaned up and rehabilitated in prison. But when he gets hired as the Krusty Krab's dishwasher, SpongeBob has to help him resist the urge to turn into his mean old self.

"Dirty Bubble Returns" contains examples of:

  • Curse Cut Short:
Dirty Bubble: Remember this face, and remember it well! So you'll recognize me when I see you in-
Al Priss: (Places a cork on the Dirty Bubble to trap him in the bottle) Jail!
  • The Blank: A teacher becomes this after the Dirty Bubble wipes away her dirty look. He also does this to Perch Perkins briefly until putting it back on upside-down.
  • Forgot About His Powers: While trapped inside Dirty Bubble, SpongeBob realizes he can just absorb all the grime inside him, citing that he always forgets about his own absorbency.
  • I Want My Mommy!: After getting trapped inside Dirty Bubble, SpongeBob calls out, "Call the cops! Call Mr. Krabs! Call my mommy!"
  • Literal Metaphor: The warden warns Dirty Bubble to "Keep it clean, or you'll get mean". SpongeBob learns that his personality and behavior depends on how dirty he becomes and, sometimes, even a speck of dirt or lint can dirty him up again.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: The Dirty Bubble gets these when he is mesmerized by the grime in the toilet.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: The Dirty Bubble speaks in rhyme while committing evil deeds.
  • Reformed Criminal: The episode focuses on Dirty Bubble being released from jail as "Clean Bubble" and trying to remain clean to keep from returning to villainy.
  • Time Skip: There's a six-month skip from the Dirty Bubble being jailed and him being released.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The Dirty Bubble is determined to stay clean in order not to revert back to villainy, but Mr. Krabs hires him to wash dishes and toilets as a way to save money on soap.
    • Patrick unintentionally reverts the Dirty Bubble back to villainy after flicking his belly button lint on him.
