Recap / Legends Of Tomorrow S 5 E 12 I Am Legends

Go To

Lachesis, Atropos, and Astra hijack the Waverider and unleash a Zombie Apocalypse on the stranded Legends.

Tropes

  • Admiring the Abomination: Gary finds Atropos attractive.
  • All for Nothing: Ultimately, Dionysus's immortality spell wears off before the Legends can reach the Loom of Fate, rendering the previous episode pointless aside from the character development. Also, Gary's efforts to hide the rings are also in vain, with him being killed after he gives them to Charlie.
  • Alone with the Psycho: Poor Gary ends up being trapped on the Waverider with Lachesis, Atropos and Astra on it, only having Gary Jr. II and an imagination of Gideon as backup.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's not clear whether Lachesis and Atropos were ever going to honor their arrangement with Astra; Atropos kills her the instant the immortality spell wears off, but Astra had been convinced to betray the Fates by that point, leaving it unclear as to whether they planned to kill her all along or if her betrayal triggered the killing.
  • Anyone Can Die: Sara, Mick, John, Nate, Ava, Gary, Astra and Zari all end up dead or presumed dead by the end of the episode.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: For once, averted; after Ava gets back up from being shot in the head, the soldiers assume that they're zombies that are immune to headshots. When Mick asks what kind of zombies can talk, the soldiers come to the conclusion that they're sentient super-zombies.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Astra tells Gary about the vision she saw of her mother's death, Gary simply asks if that was the only thing she saw.
  • Artistic License – Cars: Although the episode is supposed to take place in the UK, the bus the Legends steal has the driver's seat on the left and the passenger doors on the right; on British buses, of course, it's the other way round, due to driving on the left side of the road. In addition, the destination board reads "Downtown" rather than "City centre".
  • Awful Truth: Sara lied about having lost her seer powers, when in reality she had a vision of her own death, which later understandibly shocks Ava.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: John and Zari's hookup is preceded by the two of them insulting each other.
  • Blessed with Suck: The zombies ignore John unless he attacks them, but it's only because his soul is already damned.
  • Bolivian Army Cliffhanger: The Legends getting overwhelmed by zombies while Charlie decides to save them by rejoining her sisters.
  • Boom, Headshot!: A soldier shoots Ava square in the forehead, but thanks to the immortality spell, she gets right back up after a moment.
  • Call-Back: John directly quotes Rip Hunter when he tells Zari that certain things are inevitable.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: All of the Legends save Charlie are ultimately Eaten Alive by zombies. Astra and Gary's deaths by torso impalement almost seem merciful by comparison.
  • Darkest Hour: Almost all of our heroes die, and the only confirmed survivor, Charlie, apparently gives up and agrees to work with the villains.
  • Devoured by the Horde: The fate of most of the Legends, except Charlie.
  • Downer Ending: Without a doubt the darkest ending in the series since "Doomworld". The episode ends with almost all of the Legends (and also Gary and Astra) killed and Charlie seemingly agreeing to work with the Fates.
  • Evil Is Deathly Cold: While both this episode and the one directly preceding it take place in the present (albeit that one in Central City, Missouri), it's shown that London and its outskirts are quite cold at this time of the year, and sets the mood for the Zombie Apocalypse.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Despite seeing a vision of her own grisly demise early in the episode, Sara remains calm and cool-headed throughout. When the moment comes, she opts to go out fighting.
  • Fling a Light into the Future: Ava entrusts Charlie to go to the Waverider and confront her sisters, and use the Loom to set everything right.
  • Foreshadowing: There are two moments that foreshadow that the Gideon Gary interacts with is not the real deal. The first is when Gideon inexplicably starts hopping like a rabbit to distract Atropos. The second is Gideon acting affectionate to Gary when it's been shown that Gideon, like the Legends, doesn't respect Gary.
  • Forgot About His Powers: It's not really clear why Nate had to be reminded of his steel powers to bust out of the military truck.
  • Friendship Moment:
    • Everyone has one over a drink.
    • Gary and Astra of all people have one when the former convinces the latter to tell him a story about her mother.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: The audience is, thankfully, spared the sight of the Legends being ripped apart by zombies.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: When Mick shoots a zombie while holding onto its arm, the limb comes off in his hands, and he uses it like a club for the rest of the fight.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Immediately after Gary convinces Astra to break her alliance with the Fates (and, coincidentally, her Immortality wears off at alomst that very moment), she gets murdered by Atropos.
  • Helpful Hallucination: Gary imagines his rabbit as Gideon to help him against the fates.
  • Hero Stole My Bike: The Legends steal a bus to get to London.
  • Hidden Depths: For someone who is usually so incompetent, Gary proves to be incredibly brave and astute in this episode, deceiving Charlie's sisters and manipulating Astra to the point of convincing her to change sides. Unfortunately, none of the Legends are there to witness this and Gary also ends up dying along with them at the end of the episode.
  • Hope Spot:
    • Gary proves to be quite the underdog going up against the all-powerful Moirai, but he does manage to grab the rings and hide them, and far more importantly convinces Astra to give up her alliance with the Moirai to go back to the mission of working with the Legends to save her mother. Unfortunately, Atropos kills her before they can use the Time courier to get to the Legends, followed by killing Gary himself.
    • The Legends make it to the pub and the old Time Bureau hideout, only for the Time courier there still needing to charge. This one is a somewhat downplayed version of this trope, as it's somewhat obvious the show will not squander the opportunity to have a Shout-Out to Shaun of the Dead.
  • Human Pincushion: How both Astra and Gary meet their ends.
  • Humble Goal: Asked what they would do with the power of the Loom, the Legends all admit to wanting some pretty simple things out of life; Nate, Sara, and Ava are content just flying through time with their friends, Mick wants a simple life (of crime), Zari wants to reunite with Behrad and use her talents for good, and John (after joking about an multi-continental rager) simply wants to make things right with Astra.
  • In the Back: Atropos kills Gary by flinging a bone blade into his back.
  • Irony: John tries to light up a cigarette under a sign that reads "smoking will kill you".
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Lachesis shows Astra a vision of Natalie's potential death to try and break Astra of her humanity.
    • Atropos mockingly congratulates Astra for being "as weak as any human" just before killing her.
  • Last Stand: The Legends have one against the horde of zombies.
  • Mythology Gag: The image of John Constantine running from a Zombie Apocalypse in England is likely taken from DCeased: A Good Day To Die #1 (which was released less than a year prior to this episode's original air date), and one panel in particular.
  • No-Sell: Because Constantine's soul is already damned, he's invisible to Atropos' zombies. To such an extent that, upon standing between one and Zari, the zombie just ends up clinging harmlessly to his back as if it can't even comprehend that there's something between them at all.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Atropos kills Astra the instant the immortality spell wears off, and does the same to Gary immediately after he gives Charlie the rings.
  • Noodle Incident: John tells Zari about his friend Old Man Joe once having problems with a car of his becoming possessed.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Ava's attempts to convince people that the Legends aren't zombies are ruined when she gets right back up after a headshot because of her temporary immortality and is forced to limp like a zombie due to an ankle injury.
  • Playing Possum: John puts Zari into a death-like state to be able to sneak past the zombie horde with her.
  • Portal Cut: A zombie loses an arm this way when Charlie boards the Waverider.
  • Shoot the Shaggy Dog: All of the heroes' efforts to temporarily become immortal and get to the Loom of Fate over the course of two episodes are rendered moot by the episode's end when the zombies kill them all anyway. The same goes for Gary and the Fates fighting over Astra's soul; even though Gary is ultimately successful in winning her over, Atropos just kills them both anyway. The only ray of hope is Charlie aiming to set things right.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Zari and John hook up in this episode.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: Zari and John hurl insults to each other before kissing.
  • Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism: Between Zari (idealistic) and John (cynic), with the positions later being switched.
  • Straw Nihilist: After Lachesis shows her a vision of her mother's eventual death, Astra is turned off of the idea of resurrecting Natalie at all, feeling that it's not worth it if she'll just die again. A conversation with Gary, who gets her to start thinking about the good times they could still have together, convinces Astra that it might be worthwhile after all.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Atropos triggers a Zombie Apocalypse just to kill the seven Legends.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Sara receives a vision of herself dying in the bar where they ultimately hole up, killed by zombies. Sara tells nobody and lies about the vision, allowing them all to go off to the now zombie filled London to get a Time Courier that she already knows will get at least her killed. Because of this the Legends can't either try another course of action or at least spend some time fortifying the bar they hole up in. As a result Sara and most of the rest of the Legends lose their immortality and all of them except Charlie and maybe Constantine are killed by zombies. Even worse, the Time Courier charges and is ready to use mere seconds after Sara dies, meaning the deaths could have been very easily avoided. Leader of the team everybody!
  • Uncertain Doom: While most of the team is unambiguously dead, John's fate is less certain, as the zombies had previously shown no interest in killing him, and he's last seen trying to drag them off of Zari.
  • Womanchild: Aside from resurrecting her mom, Astra also has two very strange demands for working with the Fates: Eliminate prunes and wanting dogs to stay puppies forever.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: The British soldiers think the zombie apocalypse is due to an infection, like in I Am Legend or Resident Evil, rather than the dead being raised by the goddess Atropos.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Gary manages to convince Astra to come back to the light. Unfortunately, the Fates promptly kill her for it.
  • You Are in Command Now: Due to a vision of her impending death, Sara asks Ava to take over leadership under false pretenses. Ava struggles with it and unfortunately it is rendered moot anyway, since she also dies alongside the rest of the Legends.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: Atropos unleashes one on Britain just to slow the Legends down.
