Recap / Harley Quinn (2019) S1 E6 "You’re a Damn Good Cop, Jim Gordon"

Go To

After a botched heist, the crew has to get Clayface's arm back from Jim Gordon.

Tropes:

  • Black Comedy: Harley hangs up on a woman whose husband has just been murdered and while his killer is still in the house.
  • Borrowed Biometric Bypass: Doctor Psycho uses his telekinesis to grab a security guard and hold him against a retinal scanner.
  • Bullet Dancing: Dr. Psycho does this to the cops using their own guns.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The device Harley stole from WayneTech teleports her to the Batcave. She later uses it to send Batman back during her escape.
  • Crying Wolf: Zig-Zagged Trope. Gordon turns on the Bat-Signal just to get a chance to talk with Batman about his personal problems and the latter isn't happy when he finds out because the Signal is for emergencies only and he thought he was being summoned about the WayneTech robbery. It's not played straight because Gordon was fully upfront about his intentions and didn't even know about the crime Batman thought he was being summoned for, making any deception involved accidental at worst.
  • Dartboard of Hate: Herman is shown to have a dartboard with a picture of his father Dr. Psycho taped to it in his room.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • The general premise of the episode is about a lonely man befriending a right hand.
    • The sight of a sentient shark leads Gotham PD to attack and throw him in prison in a short amount of time, which mirrors how some people within race minority is often targeted by police via systematic profiling, despite Gotham's crime rate.
    • One cop left the phone during an emergency call of a murder — with the woman calling likely about to killed also — is like incidents when some 911 operators and police disregarded emergency calls just because the operator was annoyed, bored, or doing something else.
    • King Shark gets furious at his fellow prisoners using the word "fish" as slang.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: According to Ivy, the Legion of Doom are "genuine pieces of shit", insisting that Harley shouldn't jump through hoops to get their approval.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Even while disguised as a Gotham PD officer, Clayface's right arm terminates in a clean cut where his hand used to be. None of the real officers at Gotham PD notice this as they rush to subdue King Shark, and then again to rescue Bruce Springsteen.
  • Fanservice: Harley's uncovered butt is visible in several shots as she hangs by her shorts in the Batcave.
  • Filler: This episode is mostly irrelevant to the season's overarching plot, and can be skipped over without missing any important developments.
  • Friendless Background: According to Herman, the reason why he doesn't have many friends is because his father killed anyone who showed any sign of liking him.
  • Going Commando: As evidenced by the scene where she ends up hanging by her shorts in the Batcave, Harley isn't wearing any underwear.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • King Shark thanks Harley for putting him on a job that involves his technical skill instead of treating him like a shark. Moments later, he bites the head off the tech guy he needs out of the way.
    • Dr. Psycho tries to mock Brad for being willing to perform cunnilingus, and yet he feels emasculated when Brad licks an ice cream cone into the shape of Michelangelo's David.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: When Batman insists to Harley that his partnership with Jim is strictly professional, his screensavers pop up to show pictures of him (stoically but still present) at Jim’s 50th birthday party.
  • Indy Hat Roll: Clayface does this when escaping, but tries to reach back for his "hat", which is how he lost the hand.
  • Insult to Rocks: According to the Cowled Critic's first review, Harley and her crew "aren't worthy of Legionaire's Disease, let alone the Legion of Doom".
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Callous as it was to take away the Bat-Signal, Batman is pretty justified in doing so because Gordon was borderline Crying Wolf in turning it on.
    • The Cowled Critic calls out Harley's habit of leaving her subordinates behind. This happens to Clayface's hand, and later to King Shark.
  • Jerkass Realization: When talking about how Gordon feels that Batman abandoned him in favor of his work, Harley realizes that she is doing the same thing, focusing on getting into the Legion of Doom over helping Clayface get his arm.
  • Lousy Lovers Are Losers: When Ivy meets Doctor Psycho's ex-wife Giganta, she immediately wonders how their sex worked. Apparently, really poorly, at least for her. Played for Laughs since the fact that he hypnotized her into marrying him doesn't bother her that much, but the fact he couldn't please her does.
  • Mood Whiplash:
    • Amidst an all-comedy episode, there's a nightmare moment when Harley hangs up the police headquarters phone on a terrified woman:
Woman on the phone: My husband's been murdered and the killer's still in the hou...
    • Ivy finds Doctor Psycho's reconciliation with Herman touching, then decides to spend some time with Brad and his talented tongue.
  • Mythology Gag: Clayface tracking down his lost and independent arm is quite similar to an episode of Batman: The Animated Series where that version of Clayface created a little girl from himself, intending to have her act as a scout to see if he could come out of hiding. She went rogue and befriended Robin, forcing Clayface to track her down and reabsorb her. Of course, this episode plays it for laughs, whereas the TAS episode was done seriously.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Harley points that both she and Batman ended up putting their work before their friends, and "both are badasses that look great in spandex."
  • Odd Friendship: Gordon forms a friendship with the sentient severed hand of Clayface.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: In the very short time he is incarcerated in Blackgate, King Shark manages to become the head gang leader of the whole prison. His sheer size and the ability to bite off people's heads likely plays a part in it...
  • Organ Autonomy: Clayface's arm can not only operate independently of his body, it has the personality of a child and might rat on the crew if motivated.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Ivy busts open a window in the Wayne Tech skyscraper by throwing Psycho through it.
Doctor Psycho: Why was [Harley] put down so gently?!
Poison Ivy: Er, because she's not a misogynist troll who should be living down a well.
  • Police Brutality: In the first plan to get Clayface's arm out, they try to sneak King Shark in. The plan falls apart as the cops immediately tranquilize King Shark, before excessively beating him, and then sending him to prison. All in a matter of seconds.
  • Sex God: According to Giganta, her new boyfriend Brad is pretty amazing at cunnilingus, something he humorously proves when using his tongue to skillfully eat ice-cream, to the point even Ivy is intrigued.
  • Shout-Out: Dr. Psycho calls himself a "golden god" while breaking out of WayneTech.
  • Something We Forgot: While watching Cowlhead's updated review, he mentions that Harley forgot another member of the crew. Harley is briefly confused, until she realizes King Shark was arrested while they were trying to break into Gotham PD.
  • Straw Misogynist: Dr. Psycho is of the opinion that only weak men perform cunnilingus.
  • Suddenly Shouting: When the prisoners at Arkham use a derogative fish metaphor for a new prisoner, King Shark suddenly starts yelling at them for it between calmly talking to Harley as she breaks him out.
    Prisoner 1: Hey, fresh fish!
Prisoner 2: Here, fishy, fishy, fishy!
King Shark: Now fellas, look, I know it's just in fun but WHAT THE FUCK DID I TELL YOU ABOUT THAT WORD?!
Prisoner 1: [sheepishly] Oh, yeah. Sorry, King.
Prisoner 2: [likewise, simultaneously] Ooh. Sorry about that.
King Shark: [calmly and happily] Oh. They're learning. [as he walks up to Harley] Baby steps, right, Harley? [to the prisoners, as the vine Harley rides on drags him out the hole] I WILL KILL EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU WITH MY BARE HANDS IF I HAVE TO!!!!
  • Take That!: Sy suggests calling up his old friend Henry Kissinger for ideas when the gang contemplates becoming war criminals to get into the Legion of Doom.
  • Teleportation: The device Harley steals from WayneTech turns out to be a teleporter that goes directly to the Batcave. It's still in beta, so she winds up above the main area and nearly falls to her death.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Gordon proclaims of Batman, "All I ask is that occasionally when my wife is emotionally distant during sex, he listens!" before immediately clarifying that he meant he wants Batman to listen to him talk about the sex, not listen in on the sex itself.
  • Trojan Prisoner: Harley attempts to sneak King Shark into Gotham PD by having Clayface disguise himself as an officer and walk him in. It fails because the cops immediately freak out, subdue King Shark, and ship him to prison.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Harley thinks Batman is this when he tries to cuff her and send her back to Arkham after she just helped him and Jim reconcile.
  • We Need a Distraction: After their Trojan Prisoner gambit fails, Clayface walks into the police station disguised as a cop and claims Joker just kidnapped Bruce Springsteen. The cops, all huge fans of the Boss, immediately mobilize to rescue him.

King Shark

Usually, this take on King Shark is an amiable geek and a sensitive soul. Nevertheless, he's still a shark, and can be terrifyingly dominant if the situation calls for it.

How well does it match the trope?
