Recap / Dr. Crafty Season 4 Month 1: Season 4 Premiere Month

Go To

Airing Range: 5/7/21 - 5/29/21

After a lengthy break between seasons, the Crafty Crew returns to kick off Season 4. Even with Mindstein and the Infinium relics still at large, nothing will stop them from doing what they love. Much like the Season 3 Premiere month, this month is dedicated to improving the show's presentation while introducing some new merchandise. This month also happens to be the anniversary month for Dr. Crafty as a whole, so the Crew reminisces on how far they've come as people and even work in a newcomer into their ranks.

Tropes Applicable to the Month as a whole:

  • Spin-Off: This month introduces Crafty's Shake-Up Salon, co-hosted with Crafty by Stylene the witch. Together, they take a Patreon-supporter-voted character related to the monthly theme and try and enhance their design.

Main Show E75: "We're Back! A Crafty Story!"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/75_9.jpg
Air Date: 5/7/21

Months after Mindstein's attack during "I Need a Hero Academia," Sasha suddenly appears to Crafty again as he rests bed—this time, in person. She helps him get up to speed with the Infinium relics Mindstein is after while the cohosts seek the same answers from whatever sources they can. Unperturbed, Crafty rallies everyone up to begin Season 4, making a point to show off what his beloved Crew is doing to improve as he creates new promotional art for them and himself.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Badass Boast: After the end card shows up, the camera zooms out to show that Mindstein has been watching this episode play out on her computer in her lair. She gets up from her chair and slowly walks away from the screen to contemplate what she had seen. Suddenly, she stops when a message begins playing on her screen—it's the Crafty Crewmates. They dare her to come at them with everything she has.
[As Mindstein exits her office, her main screen suddenly fills with noise. A voice sounds from the footage.]
Crafty: Oh, I almost forgot... There's one viewer, in particular, we have a little message for.
[Mindstein glares at the screen as an image comes into focus. It's the entire Crafty Crew glaring at her in silhouette!]
Crafty: Hello, Mindstein. Hope our 'biggest fan' is enjoying our season debut.
Nurse: We just wanted to let you know we thought about what you said at the end of last season...
Pepper: How you wanted us to be afraid every night since then...
Messibelle: We decided: screw that! 'Cuz we're not afraid of you!
Crystelle: No matter what surprises you may have planned, we are ready this time.
Crafty: If you want my Nurse so bad...
Nurse: If you want to take his heart...
Crafty and Nurse together: THEN BRING IT ON!
[Outraged, Mindstein chucks a scalpel into the screen. There's a hint of fear in her eyes as she looks on.]
  • Call-Back:
    • This episode refers back to a few episodes of Season 3 as everyone learns of the Infinium weaponry.
      • The episode begins with Crafty dreaming of being out at sea and meeting Sasha again, much like "Crafty Hearts Re:Grouped." Unlike the Season 3 premiere, Sasha is waiting for him not in the dream, but in person at his bedside.
      • Also like "Crafty Hearts Re:Grouped," Messi learns of something deeply concerning and confides with Pepper about it. This time, while cleaning up the lab, she found Stan Pines' journal, which was in Crafty's possession since "Something Weird This Way Comes." It contains a section dedicated to the Infinium Relics, and Messi immediately connects the dots as to why Mindstein is after them.
      • It's established in "Magic Kindgom Mania" that not even Crystelle's coworkers are absolved of paying for her services. In this episode, Nurse shoves a dollar bill into Crystelle's hands and demands answers on the Infinium Relics.
    • Partway through the art commentary, Crafty drops by Crystelle's closet to check in with her. While he's distracted by the bit he's upholding, Crystelle reveals that she's been haunted by the intense visions she experienced in the Spin-Off Special. Try as she might, she just can't understand what on earth it is that she's seeing, and she urges Crafty to come back later to discuss the matter when he's ready.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The first time Crafty and Sasha made love those many years ago turns out to have massive ramifications in the present: it gave Crafty his Infinium Heart, the first authentic one of its kind in existence. Sasha comes to the conclusion first, but it takes a while for Crafty.
Crafty: Oh. Ohhhhhhhhh... Y’know, in hindsight, probably should've used protection.
  • Divine Conflict: The Dr. Crafty universe started due to an event in the past that Sasha calls the Divinimachi. The idea of mortals being able to control gods with the Infinium Relics greatly offended several deities. This led to a massive conflict in which the Infinian race and the universe these gods resided in were both wiped out. Only Sasha was left; she survived the conflict by hiding away behind the Infinium Door—the very same one in the castle. When the coast was clear, she exited her hiding place and recreated the universe into what it is now.
  • Greater Need Than Mine: Crafty seems to be dealing with his frustrations towards Sasha much more healthily than he was a season prior. When Sasha tries apologizing about how their relationship turned out again, Crafty reassures her. Even with the unresolved tension between them, he's thankful for the opportunity she gave him to protect his friends—and by extension, the world. He stays true to his words even when Sasha leaves: as she exits, she reminds him of her letter that he received in "LoveCrafty." But Crafty holds off on reading it to focus on his show and friends first.
    Sasha: Colin. I'm so sorry...
Crafty: Don't be. Not for that, anyway.
    Sasha: Huh?
Crafty: Whether I had this heart or not doesn't really matter when it comes to this Mindstein character. She was going to do what she did to Nurse either way. If anything, you've given me exactly what I need to protect her from that monster and put a stop to Mindstein's plans. So—at least for that—thank you.
[Sasha blushes at Crafty's thanks, glancing away. She suddenly returns her gaze to Crafty, who has more to say.]
Crafty: There's just one more thing I want to know.
    Sasha: A-Anything!
Crafty: Why? Why did you leave me like you did?
Sasha: You... didn't read my letter, did you?
[Crafty remembers that very letter in a brief flashback, right as Sasha gets up from her seat to leave.]
Sasha: It's okay. We're both still scared about where we stand as... 'us.'
    Crafty: Where are you going?
Sasha: Don't worry. I'm not going far away this time. I'll still be here when you're ready—when we're both ready.
Crafty: Will I see you again?
Sasha: That's a question only you can answer. Get well soon.
[Sasha's voice wavers as she blushes again.]
Sasha: ... And... um... I... can't wait for your next episode! Uh... Bye!!
    Crafty: Wait! Sasha!
[Crafty's too late; Sasha has already left the castle. He looks back in his room to find his lab coat, and in it, Sasha's letter to him. Surprisingly, he doesn't open it then and there; instead, there's a cut to him in his usual attire, making his way to the lab. He passes by the rest of the Crafty Crew.]
Crafty: Come on, girls! Whaddya waiting for? Can't you see we've got work to do?
    Messi: Work?
    Pepper: Now?
Nurse: What're you planning to do?
Crafty: Well, what do you think? It's time for Season 4, baby!
  • Inner Thoughts, Outsider Puzzlement: As Crafty begins the episode after Sasha's visit, he encounters a disembodied voice hyping up his comeback. Crafty urges the voice to calm down and questions why it's even here, to which the voice reveals that it's part of Crafty's imagination. Sure enough, a concerned Nurse pops in and informs Crafty that she saw him staring off into space and talking to seemingly nothing. The whole situation leaves even Crafty befuddled, but he starts coming around to the mysterious voice's showmanship regardless.
Voice: Ladies and gentlemen, the moment you have been waiting for: Dr. Crafty Season 4 is about to begin! Are you ready?
[An audience erupts into cheers as spotlights shine all throughout the lab and celebratory music plays]
Voice: I said: Are you REA—?!
[The music abruptly stops as Crafty appears before the audience in a puff of smoke.]
Crafty: Stop, stop! Hold on, hold on! ... This isn't how I wanted to do this...?
Voice: There he is! The man of the hour the—[Crafty glares.]—ooo-kay...
Crafty: [impatiently] Yes, yes. Hello, hello, hello, my subjects. I'm Doctor Crafty, but I didn't want this flashy entrance! I just wanted something... simple. Who organized this?! Who hired you?!
Voice: 'Hired me?' Why, I'm just an imaginary voice in your mind! I was never even heeeeeeeeere~!
    Crafty: Wait, what?
[The spotlights cut out completely when Nurse pops in, looking worried.]
Nurse: Doctor? You've been standing there staring in the camera for thirty seconds. Do you need me to take over?
Crafty: Huh? What? B-But, there were lights! There was an ominous voice! What's happening?!
Nurse: Oh, Doctor... The nerves must've gotten to you. We've rehearsed this a thousand times. We were just going to open the show with something simple. Nothing... over the top, like that. Don't you remember?
Crafty: [Somewhat dejectedly] Yes... I remember.
    Nurse: Then let's get started!
Crafty: Now, hold on a minute, Nurse. I know I said I wanted something simple... But that simply won't do! We're BACK, baby, and we need to kick this off with a bang! That scary voice in my head had a point!
Nurse: Oh, Doctor... Somehow I knew this would happen.
    Crafty: Wait, really?
Nurse: Ahu, well, it wouldn't be the Dr. Crafty show without some silly plot twist, or... you changing your mind on a dime. That's what I love about~...[Blushing, Nurse catches herself letting her crush slip out.]... Uhhhh, hahaha! This show! Yes! Definitely that!
[Nurse tries saving face by flashing an extremely forced grin.]
Crafty: Right, well, um... Let's get started!
    [Nothing happens; crickets chirp.]
Nurse: Ahem... Again, Doctor, we don't have any special lights today! We didn't budget for tha—
Crafty: Ohhhh, sweet, naive Nurse. Where there's a will—and an animation team—there's a way.
[Crafty produces and presses a light switch, and actual spotlights activate, complete with the same song as before.]
Crafty: Dr. Crafty Season 4! Let's show our audience what we've been up to!
  • The Maker: Sasha reveals that she created the Dr. Crafty universe after recounting the Divinimachi. When she finished getting everything set up, she secluded herself in the darkest depths of the Earth's oceans. She resurfaced when Crafty attempted suicide by drowning; something about him at the time motivated Sasha to save him.

Chara-Cafe E13: "La Lamia, Do Doo Do Doo Doo"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cafe_4.jpg
Air Date: 5/8/21

A ton of animals break into the kitchen and destroy Pepper's oven. Pepper and Crafty create a zoologist to help get things under control.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Mundane Solution: The Lamia Zoologist's solution to the animal infestation is laughably simple. She just shoves every single one of them into the castle's dungeon.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Among the spin-off cohosts, Pepper is the only one who adheres directly to the Crafty Crew's green-pink color scheme. Every succeeding co-host's color scheme represents only one of the two colors and deviates from there. This distinction is discussed plainly in this episode, where Crafty explains how Pepper was designed before those color deviations were commonplace.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Pepper's new oven, which she received in "I'MA VAMPIRE" but barely got a chance to use thanks to the events of Hero Month, gets destroyed by some rampaging animals. The poor chef is nearly brought to tears by the loss.

Main Show E76: "As Seen on DVD"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/76_3.jpg
Air Date: 5/14/21

Crafty struggles to find the perfect plan for a DVD cover for the show. However, the sudden appearance of Nurse gives him the inspiration he needs. They both discuss the machinations of DVD covers, from what makes them successful or how one should consider the digital art piece for printing.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Disco Stu: Nurse questions the use of film reel in the art, seeing it as grossly outdated even by Crafty's standards. Crafty himself uses that observation to justify his decision; it's still on-brand even if it's the oldest thing on the show, especially since he openly admits to using outdated meme humor.
  • Dope Slap: When the DVD cover is completed, Messi predictably mentions how much she loves being tied up like she is in the art. Nurse slaps her for it, and Messi spends the rest of the scene with a silent, dumbstruck expression.
  • Not Me This Time: Crafty makes a crass remark about bleeding in printing towards Nurse. As she glares at him, he hurries to explain that he was simply reading his script, blaming the writers for the joke.
Crafty: Nurse, would you like to talk about bleeding?"
    [Nurse looks immensely disturbed.]
Crafty: Because, y'know, women know about that, right?
    Nurse: E-excuse me...?
[Crafty shrieks like a monkey before quickly collecting himself.]
Crafty: Hey, hey. That line's not on me, okay? I haven't been the writer for over two seasons now. I was talking about printing bleeding.
Nurse: Oh! I can talk about that...
  • Too Kinky to Torture: On the DVD cover, everyone on the Crafty Crew has somehow gotten themselves tangled up in a pile of film reels. Everyone looks either uncomfortable, horrified, or annoyed... except for Messibelle, who looks like she's having the time of her life.

Top Ten Tub E13: "Crafty Idol"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tub_22.jpg
Air Date: 5/15/21

Another selection of Crafty fan characters have arrived for approval; Messi and Crafty decide to celebrate the occasion in the style of American Idol. Because three judges are required to complete the reference, Disgustilda is recruited as a guest commentator!

This episode's list contains the following:

  • 10. Faera, by JCtheAllstar
  • 9. Mina Conda, by DevinQuigleyArt
  • 8. Edmit, by AdamAnt543
  • 7. Bernard, by Girm
  • 6. Lila Honeytrap, by cerulebell
  • 5. Fleecia, by Crispysheep
  • 4. Arigeta, by Hitennoruroni
  • 3. Mortimer, by Hitennoruroni
  • 2. Florence, by Skittlesjuice
  • 1. Vinessa, by Newtafterdark

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Basilisk and Cockatrice: Bernard Cockatrice, the applying fashion designer, naturally. He falls right into Camp Gay as he hits on Crafty.
  • Broken Record: Messi's thoughts on each contestant all consist of, or start off with, "I love your outfit," or some variation of it.
  • Fluffy Tamer: To Faira's chagrin, Disgustilda tamed some sharks to help guard her cottage. She had to carefully lure them away from the sea with some meat, which was just as difficult as it sounds. But they're here now, and Faira's tourism plan just became a lot more difficult.
  • Innocent Flower Girl: Florence, the #2 contestant, has a shy demeanor that comes hand in hand with her rose motif.
  • Innocent Innuendo: Midway through his introduction, Mortimer the Skeleton Mailman kneels down to reach for something before him. The judges all thing that he's dropping a euphemism, but Mortimer just has a package for Crafty. Disgustilda obliterates the subtlety behind her and her fellow judges' misunderstanding:
Mortimer: Oh, that reminds me! I got a package—
    Crafty and Messi together: NOOOOOO!!
    Mortimer: —to deliver to Crafty.
[All three judges sigh in relief.]
Disgustilda: OH, THANK GOD! I THOUGHT HE MEANT 'PENIS!!'
  • Plant Person: At least four of the contestants have some sort of plant as a central motif in their design.
  • Scary Scarecrow: Emit inverts the trope, being a friendly repairman with a high-pitched voice and a crippling, though understandable, case of pyrophobia.
  • Snake People: Mina Conda, a huge six-armed naga, is one of the contestants, looking to lend her services as a physical therapist.
  • Special Guest: Because three judges are required to complete the American Idol reference, Disgustilda guest-hosts this episode with Crafty and Messi. Surprisingly, she gets along with Crafty pretty well, aside from some good-natured taunting.
  • Sweet Sheep: Felica, the #5 contestant, is a sweet, elderly sheep lady who knits sweaters from her own wool. The judges can't help but go "aww!" at the sight of her and ask that she fill in as their grandma, even Disgustilda.

Main Show E77: "Player Select"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/77_4.jpg
Air Date: 5/21/21

The crew creates a mock player select screen for themselves. As the drawing progresses, each member discusses their favorite fighting games and the art of character select icons.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Early-Bird Cameo: Just before the episode ends, the camera pans out to show an unfinished, incoherently screaming Metal Crafty watching the show from within Mindstein's lair. His appearance here foreshadows his oncoming appearance in the third month of Season 4.
  • Hidden Depths: Much to the shock of Crafty and Nurse, Pepper's favorite fighting game series is the ultra-violent Killer Instinct. She played the arcade version now and again during her and Pickles' travels before she became part of the show. Her favorite character to play as is the Xbox One version's Guest Fighter, Rash.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Messibelle hops offscreen and into the kitchen, Pepper arrives and mentions how she sometimes has to overwhelm Messi when she tries stuffing herself with snacks. This is coming from someone who is known for eating in excess.
  • The Prima Donna: Stylene briefly drops by after hearing so much conversation in the lab, and when asked about her favorite fighting game, she readily responds with Skullgirls. She had apparently done the makeup for the various fighters in that game, and she regards them all as divas behind the scenes.
  • Shout-Out: The episode starts off with a loving reference to Super Street Fighter II Turbo's intro, with Crafty as Ryu, Mindstein as Akuma, and the Crafty Crew's ladies subbing in for everyone else. When it ends, Nurse marvels at how awesome it was... then remarks that it went over budget.

Questionable Qloset E7: "Migraine Over Matter"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/qloset_17.jpg
Air Date: 5/22/21

Since the Spin-Off Special, Crystelle has been fairly sick from the recent visions she's seen. Nevertheless, she answers three more pressing questions for the month, one of which summons the most unwelcomed guest of all: her ex.

This episode's questions for Crystelle are revealed on the following three cards:

  1. The Tower (Crafty's Castle): "Do you ever rent out rooms in the Castle? I imagine friends like Linkara or Darksylvania would LOVE to host episodes there. Or is that a security concern?"
  2. The Moon (El Shaddoll Sephiragicia): "Does Crafty still have the El Shaddoll cards in the castle?"
  3. The Justice (Jedah): "Has Crafty ever considered hiring Jedah as a lwyer to sue Mindstein in retaliation for breaking into his castle? I mean, nothing is more fearsome than a lawyer."

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Bothering by the Book: For the episode's final question, Crystelle is asked why Jedah cannot help the Crafty Crew take Mindstein to court. Jedah suddenly appears and rapidly recites a law—in depth—about why he cannot help on that front. To put it succinctly, upholding due process for Mindstein is a moot point. She can simply refuse to attend court and defend her decision through sheer force, all thanks to her obscure and powerful resources. Plus, her acts are so blatant criminal that she'd be incarcerated on the spot if law enforcement were given the chance. After he finishes, Crystelle reveals that she was about to explain the same law, confirming it to be legitimate even if Jedah's just using it to justify his inaction.
  • Call-Back:
    • Crystelle is more than a little woozy during this episode, all thanks to the repeated visions she's had since the Spin-Off Special.
    • All those times Peridot ambushed Crafty with heavy objects is a big reason why the Crew doesn't rent out rooms in the castle—no one wants to deal with that kind of mischief in the long-term. She's shown doing so in a cutaway gag, during which an army of Ugandan Knuckles trample over Crafty again—without him saying "queen," this time.
  • Cards of Power: For this episode, Crystelle draws the Tower (Crafty's Castle), the Moon (El Shaddoll Sephiragicia), and the Justice (Jedah). This is the first episode to show the Moon, a card that Crystelle never thought she would draw. Since this month celebrates the fourth anniversary of the show, the Tower's question takes some time to look back on some running gags from past seasons.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: The cutaway gag in which Crafty is assaulted by Peridot shows off a new window artwork for the lab, also done by Blue-Paint-Sea. It uses its composition to emphasize Crafty and Nurse more than its predecessor, with the cohosts being relegated to small bubbles surrounding the duo on the right. Notably, the window also includes sections for Sasha and Disgustilda at the bottom, with both of them surrounded by appropriate iconography (Infinian tendrils for Sasha, and a dark blue border with white spikes for Disgustilda). The next times the Crew returns to the lab throughout Commission Month #3, the window has reverted back to its original design, implying that the new one was intended to be added later.
  • No Mouth: Distracted by her headache, Crystelle forgets that she has no mouth when she tries taking some painkillers.
[Crystelle appears in a puff of purple smoke, and she seems severely out of it.]
Crystelle: ... Mmmm... Oh, ugh... Hello, everyone... Welcome to my Questionable... mmph... You'll have to forgive me. After last season's finale, I've had the worst headache.
[Crystelle readies a bottle of Advil.]
Crystelle: Just... should take... something... for it...
[Crystelle tries pouring some pills directly into where her mouth would be. The pills harmlessly bounce off of her head, to which she looks bewildered then extremely annoyed. She growls in frustration.]

Main Show E78: "Happy Crafty Day!"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/78_5.jpg
Air Date: 5/28/21

Nurse forces Crafty to venture outside for the day. Unbeknownst to Crafty, Nurse has planned a celebration for the show's fourth anniversary, and she wanted to maintain the surprise. With Crafty suffering in the swamps surrounding the castle, Nurse and the other cohosts take time to look back on how far they've come and what they've enjoyed most about Crafty.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Art Evolution: Whenever one of the cohosts speaks and another one accompanies them onscreen, the cohost who isn't speaking idly blinks—a first for the show.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Crystelle reveals her backstory in this episode. Before joining the Crew, she held her fortune-telling services in a Las Vegas casino. Soon after, management realized she was using her powers to help guests gain guaranteed wins from games, so Crystelle was booted out. From there, she was forced to wander the streets until Crafty came across her.
  • Continuity Nod: Pepper is noticeably nervous about the idea of Messi's clown, even before his carcass drops from the ceiling and spooks her and everyone else. Her apprehension is a subtle reference to "Send in the Clowns," where she and Crafty had to deal with unwanted guest clowns trying to scare them.
  • Enemy Eats Your Lunch: Crafty is left with nothing but a Lunchable after Nurse throws him out of the castle. Disgustilda suddenly drops by and yoinks it from him, locking it away inside her rickety cabin. It's her first victory against Crafty, and she revels in it.
[Outside of the castle, Crafty is impatiently knocking on the main door.]
Crafty: Come on, Nurse!! Let me iiiiiin!!
    [Disgustilda sneaks up behind Crafty]
Disgustilda: Eyyyy!! What've you got there then, mate?
Crafty: Dahh!! Uh... uh, a Lunchable?
[Silently, Crafty nervously watches as Disgustilda considers the meal... She opts to take it.]
    Disgustilda: ... YOINK!
[Disgustilda sprints off to her cottage.]
Crafty: Hey! You took the best part!!
Disgustilda: I'll give it back to ya, boy! Soon as you give me my castle back, you wankah!
    [Disgustilda emphatically slams her door.]
  • Refuge in Audacity: Messi somehow caused some poor clown to starve to death in the castle walls. The guy's skeleton falls from the ceiling just as she gets the festivities started. Everyone except for Stylene is plainly shocked by the sight, but they simply hurry to move on to the episode's art commentary.
[Nurse returns from chucking Crafty out of the castle.]
    Nurse: Hm, perfect! Ohhhh, giiirrrrrrls~~!!
Crystelle: Nurse! What on earth did you do to Crafty?!
Messi: [intensely] You ain't possessed again... are you?
    Pickles: Pffft!
Stylene: Good riddance, honestly! I always felt like I have a migraine with his childish squabble!
Nurse: Girls, settle... I just gave him some... incentive to leave for a bit. I was thinking of a little surprise of sorts, actually!
Everyone except for Nurse and Stylene: A surprise?!
[Stylene clutches her head in pain.]
Stylene: Jeeee-SUS! Can y'all keep it down for five minutes?!
Nurse: Yes, a surprise party for Crafty! It is our third year anniversary. So I want to make this a special occasion, especially for him. After all that has happened—including rescuing me—I feel like I owe him something!
Pepper: I think that's a lovely idea, Nurse!
Messi: WOO-HOO! Party up in he-yah!
[Confetti falls from the ceiling as Messi blows a party horn. But she seems to be expecting a little more than that.]
    Messi: Wait... where's the clown?
    Pepper: C-Clown...?
[As if on cue, the clown in question finally falls from the ceiling—and he's nothing but bones with a wig.]
Messi: ... Ohhhhhh, riiiiiight, aheheh... I guess I needed to feed him...
Nurse: [hurriedly] Let's just get ready for the party! Okay? Good, huhu!
  • Tears of Joy: When Crafty returns to the castle and finds the Crafty anniversary party that the girls set up, he notices the parallels to his first anniversary with Sasha. When the flashback ends, Crafty is moved to tears, both in reaction to the flashback and out of thankfulness for his friends' support. Surprised by his reaction, Pepper leads her fellow Crewmates in a Group Hug for Crafty.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Crafty's flashback at the episode's end reveals that his green sweater was a gift from Sasha to commemorate their first anniversary together. Even after their quiet breakup, Crafty insists on wearing that sweater every day.

Shake-Up Salon E1: "A Pollo Loco Premiere"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/salon.jpg
Air Date: 5/29/21

Crafty is in debt to Linkara ever since borrowing Neutro for "I Need a Hero Academia." As payment, he and Stylene kick off the Shake-Up Salon by upgrading Linkara's robot assistant, Pollo.

Tropes Found in This Episode:

  • Boxed Crook: To keep Stylene from angering Pollo, Crafty takes Stylene aside and reminds her of the consequences of attacking Linkara's assistant. With Linkara being Crafty's main source of income, screwing up that badly would leave Crafty with much less cash flowing in. This could possibly leave Stylene and the other cohosts jobless—and regarding Stylene specifically, she'd be heading right back to prison. Stylene's demeanor instantly does a 180 as she swats Crafty aside and converses with Pollo more politely.
Stylene: So where is our ravishing robot?
Pollo: Right here. For the last twenty minutes, might I add?
Stylene: ... I said 'robot,' not 'coffee maker.'
Pollo: I'd appreciate a little more respect than that. Just because I don't have legs doesn't mean I can't put you in your place.
    [Stylene draws her trimmers.]
Stylene: Big talk, for an overgrown toaster!
Pollo: ... If comparing me to kitchen appliances is the height of your repertoire, I'd advise quitting while you're ahead. Besides, I've faced more dangerous magic-users than yourself.
    Stylene: Ooohh, you are SO—
[By this point, Crafty's been sweating buckets, and he hurries over between Pollo and Stylene.]
Crafty: Ready for your redesign! Yes, ahehehehehe... Excuse us for one moment.
[Crafty turns his attention to Stylene.]
Crafty: This is my main source of income's friend, and I'm already in hot enough water. If I get the boot, that means all of us are out of a job and you have to go back to—
[Alarmed, Stylene swats Crafty aside and hurries to make amends with Pollo.]
Stylene: So what can we do for such a marvelous, macho machine like yourself?! Hahahaha...!
  • Call-Back: After Crafty stole Neutro and got him severely damaged during the last season's finale, Linkara forces Crafty to pay him with free assistance wherever applicable. Crafty's first task is upgrading Pollo, Linkara's robot assistant.
  • Can't Take Criticism: As Pollo finds out, Stylene has a loose temper when it comes to snide remarks at her expense. She almost attacks Pollo after he talks down to her too many times, but Pollo handily blasts her away with his chest gun.
  • Continuity Nod: In the previous season's "I Need a Hero Academia," Disgustilda reveals that Crafty's castle used to be hers. It turns out that he neglected to hide some damning evidence of the theft; Stylene mentions a sign on the front door revealing the castle's original owner.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: Pollo's upgraded body receives a broad chest and chunky arms, both balanced by comparatively dainty legs and an even smaller head. Even so, Pollo is happy with the changes. In his eyes, the mere addition of any limbs at all makes this new design a direct improvement over his current one.
