Recap / Bob's Burgers S3E7 "Tina-Rannosaurus Wrecks"

Go To

After a minor fender bender, Bob gets wrapped up with a shady insurance agent.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: The Belchers' insurance agent is voiced by Bob Odenkirk, who's best known for playing Amoral Attorney Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Chase is basically a Lighter and Softer version of Saul. Additionally, one of the scams he mentions the restaurant being a goldmine for is a slip-and-fall, which Saul was known for pulling to the point he earned the nickname Slippin' Jimmy.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": Chase isn't fooled by Bob and Linda pretending that they lost their kids to drowning in the basement because they didn't go to check on their bodies and try to resuscitate them. Bob even had wondered if the kids should have worn snorkels.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Chase appears to be a cheerful, affable insurance agent, but it turns out he's actually committing insurance fraud and has no qualms about dragging the Belchers into it regardless of Bob's objections. He even briefly insults Tina while still in his casual, polite tone:
Chase: Oh, think about it, you two. We'll be the three amigos of insurance fraud. Restaurants are disaster magnets! Broken pipes, slip-and-falls, her... (points to Tina)
    Tina: Aw...
    Bob: (unamused) Hey...!
  • Blatant Lies: Chase isn't even remotely fooled by Bob and Tina's lies, but he pretends he was because he's planning on using them for insurance fraud.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Tina is very afraid of going to jail...Or Hell...Or "Hell Jail."
  • Chekhov's Gun: Gene's keyboard, usually a gag item whenever it shows up, plays a crucial part in Chase's downfall by recording him admitting to insurance fraud.
  • Continuity Nod: Gene asks if Mort's hearse has an oil slick to slow down pursuers. In "Food Truckin'", the Belchers themselves used an improvised oil slick for this purpose.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Of all the cars to hit, Tina just happens to hit Jimmy Pesto's.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Mort offers to drive the Belchers around while Bob's car is being fixed, but failed to take into account that he'd have to wait outside while the Belchers do their business.
  • Engineered Public Confession: Tina uses Gene's keyboard to record Chase admitting to insurance fraud, and the Belchers have it sent straight to the FBI.
  • Epic Fail: When Bob tries to teach Tina to drive in an empty parking lot, she ends up veering straight into the fender of the only other car in the lot, at a slow walking pace. Even worse, it was Jimmy Pesto's.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Chase portrays himself as a cheerful friend of the Belchers, but he's actually a fraud and will happily drag them into committing crimes with him regardless of their objections. This also applies even further once his true colors are revealed—he's willing to give the Belchers a cut for their role, but is also willing to testify against Bob if they don't play along.
  • Fear-Induced Idiocy: Tina attempts to drive. She gets so nervous that she says, "Uh..." for thirty seconds straight while slowly swerving back and forth. Even when Bob yells at her to hit the brakes, she ignores him and this results in her colliding into the only other car in the parking lot.
  • Is This Thing Still On?: How the Belchers get Chase to stop using them in insurance frauds; Tina records him on Gene's keyboard.
  • It's All My Fault: Tina falls into a depression over a combination of her accidentally crashing Bob's car and burning down Chase's house, seeing herself as a failure who can't do anything without screwing up. She only snaps back after Chase confesses to burning down the house himself as part of his insurance fraud scheme.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: When Linda asks why Bob didn't tell her what happened with Tina, Bob states he did it because Linda absolutely can't keep anything private to save her life.
  • Meaningful Background Event: When Chase is trying to goad Bob into another scam, Tina can be seen fighting Gene for his keyboard. Later, Tina reveals that she used it to record Chase confessing his plan.
  • Mooning: Gene does this to one of the cops during Mort's funeral procession.
    Louise: Take that, po-po!
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Bob refuses to let the lie continue when he sees how torn up Tina is about it.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Gene throws away his towel and briefly goes nude during his and Louise's trip to a house on sale.
  • Noodle Incident: According to Louise, Tina ate a rope at one point.
  • Offscreen Karma: The FBI is given the recording of Chase admitting to fraud, so the audience knows he's going down, but we don't actually see him getting arrested.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: A week after the incident, Jimmy Pesto is still harassing Bob about the fender bender.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The normally docile, stoic Tina is shown to be extremely agitated by Bob's constant lying. She even raises her voice, something very out of character for someone who speaks in a quiet monotone.
  • Overly Long Gag:
    • Tina driving into another car goes on for almost 30 seconds, with her groaning the entire time.
    • When the FBI is given Gene's keyboard (which recorded Chase's admission of fraud), one of the agents spends a solid five or so seconds hitting the wrong keys (resulting in various fart and animal sounds) before another tells him the correct key to press.
  • Ow, My Body Part!: Linda says her trademark "Oh, my face!" when Chase's house catches fire... despite being a good distance away from the fire.
  • Papa Wolf: When Chase's house caught fire from the grill, Bob immediately goes to get Tina away from the flames.
  • Precision F-Strike: After realizing they're in over their head in dealing with Chase, Tina adamantly says they have to "take the son-of-a-bitch down."
  • Reactive Continuous Scream: After Tina wakes Bob up at night, his screaming causes all of the Belchers to start screaming one after the other.
  • Skyward Scream: Tina in her Imagine Spot of being in Hell Jail.
    Tina: What's for lunch today?
    Demon Lunch-Lady: YOUR LIES!
Tina: NOOO! That's what I had yesterday!
  • Spanner in the Works: Bob deciding to let Tina drive a little bit in the parking lot somehow leads to a serial insurance agent scammer being busted.
  • Spotting the Thread: Chase sees right through Bob and Linda's attempt to fake the kids' deaths, noting that their reaction was too theatrical and unrealistic—he points out that they didn't even try resuscitation. He could tell Bob was faking since, when Chase's house burned down, Bob's immediate reaction to seeing Tina in a real life-or-death situation was to rush to her side.
  • Suddenly Shouting: As Tina inches closer to hitting another car, Bob goes from a calm tone to loud and panicked as he freaks out at Tina to hit the brakes.
  • Tempting Fate: Right at the start of the episode, Bob mentions how today has been really good, which is why he decides to let Tina drive the car. It all goes downhill from there.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Mort assumes the Belchers are this after he chauffeurs them around all week without thanks. When he storms in to rage, they actually do thank him and mention the gift basket they left on his doorstep. Mort verifies this and cools down.
  • The Unsmile: Tina's "Everything Is Okay" face.
  • Will Not Tell a Lie: Tina is shown to be extremely uncomfortable with Bob's Web Of Lies, to the point where she hyperventilates and unintentionally complicates Bob's story.
