Recap / Big City Greens S 4 E 5

Go To

Iced

While on a family outing to see a hockey game between the Big City Icicles and the Mid City Meteors, Gramma butts heads with Nick when he sneaks in without a ticket. Meanwhile, Cricket and Nancy try to sneak onto a Zamboni, Bill tries to get a corn dog from an obnoxious vendor, and Tilly tries to help the Icicles make peace with the rival team to work better.

"Iced" contains examples of:

  • Artistic License: Although this was Played for Laughs, the corn dog vendor would get in trouble or gotten fired if he was found out that he refused to give Bill a corn dog.
  • Berserk Button: Never call Zelda the Zamboni "it"; Cricket learned this from Zamboni Tony the hard way.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Even though the Greens and Nick got kicked out of the coliseum, at least Alice and Nick made up their quarrel and the former considered the latter a part of the family. And Bill gets to finally have a corn dog when another vendor starts selling them outside.
  • Bottle Episode: Almost the entire episode takes place at the coliseum.
  • Breather Episode: A relaxing and fun misadventure focusing on the Greens, before what happens in the next segment.
  • Butt-Monkey: All Bill wanted was a corn dog from the vendor!
  • Failed a Spot Check: Gloria didn't realize she and the Kaitlins ended up in the wrong Paris until after bus driver tells her.
  • For the Evulz: The corn dog vendor chooses one random "dingus" at every game (in this case, Bill) who never gets a corn dog no matter how badly they want one - just because.
  • Hockey Fight: The moment the game starts, both teams are fighting each other. Tilly convinces the Icicles to try non-violent ways of dealing with the other players, but that just leads to the Meteors beating them up.
  • Hope Spot: After catching up to the corn dog vendor and calling out to him, the vendor looks at Bill, turns toward him, gets out a corn dog, holds it out... then he chomps at it with a Slasher Smile, right in front of him.
  • Karma Houdini: The corn dog vendor receives no karma for not giving Bill a corn dog.
  • Little "No": Bill utters one when the corn dog vendor eats the corn dog he was supposed to offer him.
  • Moose and Maple Syrup: Hockey player Mikey LeBeouf punctuates his sentences with “Eh?”.
  • Special Guest: NHL player Brad Marchand plays Big City Icicles captain Mikey LeBeouf. (A glance at his Wikipedia article states that he has had aggression problems his entire career, making him particularly suitable as a captain of a hockey team which only seems to fight.)
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When Bill said he wanted a corn dog from the vendor who keeps ignoring him, Alice suggested that her son can always get one from the concessions bar. Bill refuses to out of principle, wanting a corn dog from that vendor.
  • Sudden Eye Color: Cricket suddenly gains blue irises as he first sees the Zamboni emerge from backstage.
  • Wingding Eyes: Cricket's eyes turn into mini Zambonis as he stares at it on the ice.

Chipped Off

Chip Whistler, thought to have died since the battle for Elkins Street, encounters the former Wholesome Greg in the sewers and recalls what happened to him since then, how he tried to reinvent himself as a normal person until resorting to be the evil person he was said to be.

"Chipped Off" contains examples of:

  • And Then What?: Chip loses his purpose after finding out the Greens moved out of Big City.
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: During the report on Chip's apparent death, Cricket is shown celebrating.
  • Boredom Montage: Chip's routine as "Norm Alguy" is repeated over and over, with him looking more disappointed over time.
  • Disproportionate Retribution:
    • After a Cricket lookalike kicks Chip/Norm in the leg, he desires to track the kid down, pelt him with tomatoes and drive a helicopter into him.
    • By the end of the episode, Chip now wants revenge on not only the Greens, but all of Big City for siding with them, plus his barista and his boss for "mocking him" with a compliment and extra paperwork.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: When Chip sees a news report about his supposed death, instead of realizing everybody being glad he's dead, he instead uses it to pretend to be a ghost and try to scare the Greens out of Big City.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: The evil variant; the episode closes with Chip asking Greg to rejoin him in his plan to take down the Greens and all of Big City with a maniacal laughter, with Greg joining in with a worried laugh.
  • Framing Device: The episode consists of a series of flashbacks showing what happened to Chip following his first defeat, as he tells about it to Greg in the sewer.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Gloria mocks how stupid people in horror movies are, but is immediately fooled by Chip dressed up as a Bedsheet Ghost.
  • Identical Stranger: A family identical to the Greens, the Beans, moves into the city, which serves as The Last Straw to Chip's facade cracking.
  • Last Disrespects: Cricket dances in celebration believing Chip is dead.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Chip tells Greg his long story will be "eleven minutes, give or take."
  • Loophole Abuse: Chip may be banned from Big City, but there's no rule that states he can enter in disguise, thus he comes to Gramma's house one night as a ghost which frightens Gloria, while later on he adapts the persona of "Norm Alguy".
  • Mid-Season Twist: Chip is revealed to still be around, Greg being the first to realize that, and he's forced to join him for bigger revenge.
  • Missed Him by That Much: The Greens enter the wax museum just as Greg is coming out, and through the same exact door nonetheless.
  • Mood Whiplash: Just after Chip closes the episode with an Evil Laugh, it cuts right to the cheerful happy closing theme.
  • No Body Left Behind: In-universe, Chip's body was nowhere to be found in the helicopter wreckage (because he escaped it before the crash), leading Maria to assume he was killed.
  • No-One Could Have Survived That: After Chip's helicopter is found crashed, it's assumed that Chip died in the crash. In reality, Chip jumped off and parachuted away before the crash.
  • No Sympathy: Cricket gloats over Chip's supposed death, which is kind of jarring considering that in "Friend Con" he showed sympathy over Chip simply losing his teeth. Though it is arguably justified given that the last thing Chip did to Cricket was try to murder him and his family!
  • Oh, Crap!: Greg is beyond shocked after realizing Chip is still alive.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Chip's girlfriend is only referred to as "Babe", the nickname he chose for her, and her true name is unknown.
  • Out of Focus: The Greens only appear in the opening scene, going into a wax museum. Greg then leaves the same building and is grabbed by Chip, and the rest of the episode deals with them.
  • Punny Name: Chip sneaks back into Big City under the guise of "Norm Alguy" (normal guy).
  • Reflective Eyes: Cricket's butt is reflected in Chip's eyes as he shakes it at the camera during the news broadcast.
  • Scars Are Forever: As a result of an unknown incident with a sewer rat, Chip has a permanent scar across his right eye.
  • Shaking the Rump: Cricket shakes his butt at the camera in the news report of Chip's apparent death.
  • Spoof Aesop: Chip learns over the course over the story that he should learn to be himself as pretending to be Norm got draining for him, which Greg initially supports. Of course, Chip admits that the true him is a petty, narcissistic sociopath, making Greg retract his earlier statement.
  • Stalker Shot: The last part of the flashback shows the Greens moving back in with Gramma, while the camera pans back to reveal Chip in his Norm disguise spying on them in secret.
  • Tempting Fate: In the opening scene as the Greens enter the wax museum, they express themselves living their best lives without a care in the world. Just after, Greg appears, falls into the sewers, and encounters Chip Whistler, still lurking around without the Greens knowing it.
  • The Man in the Mirror Talks Back: After "Norm Alguy"'s encounter with the Bean family, he starts to have conversations with his old Chip Whistler self in mirrors.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: Chip decides no matter how hard he tries, he can't hide the fact that he's a vengeful, petty man who will always hate the Greens. A fact that makes him happy.
  • Villain Episode: This episode focuses on Chip as we see what happened to him following the battle for Elkins Street.
