Despite this game being extremely dark, there are a few comedic moments.
As a Moments subpage, all spoilers are unmarked as per policy. You Have Been Warned.
The Game Itself:
- First and foremost, the release trailer. As mentioned on the Narm entry on the YMMV page, the Antagonist and the game itself is trying so hard to be 'edgy' it comes off as comedic. His monologue is the prime example. In text? Eerie and downright disturbing. The way it was said in the trailer? Downright hilarious. Tommy Wiseau comparisons incoming.
- For the ending, The Antagonist decides to blow up the city:The Antagonist: I only wondered if those explosives would work. The nuke goes off, leveling the city and killing everybody. The Antagonist: Well, they did.
- Although any code works, the first video to ever show the ending had Not Important overloading a nuclear power plant with the password of 666.
- What is even funnier is that the game gives a red X towards every other code, showing them as incorrect (even though they still work). 666 gives a green check. Which means that it is actually the correct code, and is actually the code the power plant worker used as the password.
- On top of that is the utterly over the top dialogue of the entire scene and the Antagonist's ridiculous laughter before being filled with lead.
- Joel from Vinesauce sums up the laugh nicely in the comments.Joel: This is the greatest laugh ever. Not only is it a classic cheesy mustache twirling bad-guy laugh, but he laughs like BWLARGH-BWAHUHUHURGH! It's some goddamn Skeletor shit. It's the best.
- Joel from Vinesauce sums up the laugh nicely in the comments.
- The icon◊ for the "Cheers" Achievement (which you get by toggling the "are you drunk?" option to yes).
- There's 2 achievements◊, for killing 2,000 of each gender. "Misogynist" is for killing 2,000 females. Killing 2,000 males? Feminist, which is clearly a jab at radical feminism.
- The achievement "Liberal" is given for firing 10,000 rounds.
- "Conservative" is 25,000 rounds.
- Most of the achievements can be summed up as extremely hilarious Black Comedy.
- The police often drive through buildings, runs over civillians and sometimes accidentally kills them during the crossfire. It's possible to cleanse most of the police station just by having the cops shoot the civillians.
- The credits list off its special thanks as "NO THANKS TO ANYONE. FUCK YOU ALL!"...then proceeding to thank Gabe Newell (listing him as Lord Gaben), the game's fans and backers, in tiny little text.
- A taste of Black Comedy: the title screen showcases The Antagonist pointing a gun at you, invoking Sean Connery Is About to Shoot You. If you choose to quit the game...he does shoot you.
Meta:
- If not the actual trailer (and we wouldn't blame you for that), than the slew of Gag Dub parody trailers released afterwards mocking the Darker and Edgier aspects will push it into Crosses the Line Twice territory. Here are some of the more prominent ones:note
- The "thank you" post to Valve for reinstating the game on Steam Greenlight features the Antagonist giving a thumbs up and attempting to smile. Key word: attempting.
- Björn Borg (Yes, the famous Swedish tennis and underwear guy) decided to join in on the fun and make a parody game: First Person Lover. Even Destructive Creations themselves admitted that they found it funny.
- Some of the fanarts are not only funny, but manage to obtain heartwarming moments.
- Although he can't stream it on Twitch, Rev from Vinesauce decided to at least make a video for it on Youtube. Keep in mind, there's some mild censorship. The Antagonistnote : I never thought it would be so easy to hug my whole neighborhood... I can feel the love... The love flowing through my veins... it's like the most intense hug... And I need more... much more...
- And when Rev makes the Antagonist hug someone a lot, a video of a Spanish horse therapy plays and the victim of the hug is replaced by a picture of a happy kitty cat.
- Bit of meta humor here as well: some people in the comments thought that something else was going on between the man and the horse...
- At one point, while inside a house, Rev notices something on the TV:Rev: Is that The Matrix playing, are you friending... kidding me? The Matrix?! ...I mean, that would explain the trenchcoat...
- Rev remarks on a police report announcing "possible hugging":Rev: "Possible"... I think it's gotten past the point of "possible"...
- "We gotta have a sewer level. You can't have any game without a motherfriending sewer level!"
- And then, the punchline. Despite all the "mild censorship", the video ends with Rev flat out calling the game shit.
- And when Rev makes the Antagonist hug someone a lot, a video of a Spanish horse therapy plays and the victim of the hug is replaced by a picture of a happy kitty cat.
- Russian video reviewer Zulin decided to stream the game on Hitbox.tv, being a tall, large, long-haired man in a black clothing◊ talking in deep baritone. Most of the stream consisted of endless jokes and Wild Mass Guessing about the Antagonist playing Hatred as himself, both from Russian and foreign viewers.
- The fact that protagonist's (fan-given) name is literally Not Important.
- The Survival Mode trailer is glorious.
- The ending of "This Youtube Poop is Not Important".The Antagonist: You WILL tell me!
Power Plant Engineer: Never, it will cause a massive explosion! Are you ins- *random ear rape*
The Antagonist: That's what I W-W-A-A-ANT! And you WILL fuck me, or I'll doo-doo!
Power Plant Engineer: NEVER!
*The Antagonist defecates himself, causing a massive explosion which blows up the entire town*
The Antagonist: Well, shit. - The same day the game was released was the same day Steam rolled out their game refund plan. It might be a coincidence, but one can't help but wonder...
