Trivia / Hatred

  • Approval of God: Destructive Creations has given praise and support to many of the fanmade YouTube parodies of their Hatred trailer, such as the HUG version and Minecraft version. They also gave praise to Björn Borg's First Person Lover, which also parodies Hatred's trailer.
  • Ascended Fan Nickname: Destructive Creations have taken to calling the protagonist "Not Important" after it became his Fan Nickname.
  • Colbert Bump: The amount of controversy the press has given this game essentially ensured its success.
  • Flip-Flop of God: The game suffered from this pre-release regarding its story. The developers never made it clear if there wouldn't be a story that explains the main character's motives and past, or there would be a narrative that reveals why the protagonist is committing mass genocide. Upon the game's early access release, it showed that the game falls into the former regarding story, in that there practically is none.
  • Streisand Effect: Hatred was on Steam Greenlight for only a short time before being taken down. In that time it got to rank 7 on the Greenlight board. Gabe Newell emailed an apology to Destructive Creations regarding this, and it is now back on Steam. The Streisand Effect? After it was put back on Greenlight, it reached the number one spot in only a few hours. In fact, it appears that the developer is trying to invoke the Streisand effect as much as possible (see YMMV page). It doesn't help that websites such as Polygon and Kotaku have released numerous articles about how controversial and sickening the game is, while at the same time giving the game a ton of attention.
