  • Aladdin: If the Genie gets a name, it'll often be a Jewish one, probably due to him being Ambiguously Jewish. "Isaac" or a variant is one of the more common choices, since it means "laughter".
  • In Beauty and the Beast, the Beast/Prince is named Adam. Many will claim that the creators call him that in the DVD commentary, but it's not true. Disney seems to want to keep him nameless, though technically a few licensed products managed to slip "Adam" in, arguably making it Ascended Fanon.
  • Big Hero 6:
    • Since Honey and GoGo are only known by their nicknames, fans have speculated that their respective real names are Aiko Miyazaki and Leiko Tanaka, much like their comic counterparts. Though this is highly unlikely due to their Race Lift to Latina and Korean. "Ethel" is also a common name for GoGo because her voice actress has claimed it might be her name.
    • Much of the fanfiction and fanart out there depicts Tadashi as being alive with severe burn scars, but not much more, likely due to his Ensemble Dark Horse status. It's become a joke within the members of the fandom that the movie's canon must have been false. Tadashi's obviously just in some hospital healing, and will definitely be back in the sequel, if there is one. Unsurprising, seeing as his body was never found and the other "victim" of the fire made it out just fine.
    • Honey Lemon being a Disney Princess, or even being descended from Rapunzel.
    • Hiro is frequently portrayed as claustrophobic, often having this revealed by jerks at the university shoving him in a locker and being discovered by one of the team. If any explanation is given for the phobia, it's usually because Hiro was stuffed in lockers during his high school days or, rarely, because he was in the car when his parents died and got trapped in his car seat.
    • It's often assumed Hiro and Tadashi are some level of bilingual when it comes to Japanese. Even if they're not, Hiro often calls Tadashi "niisan" in fanworks.
    • Honey Lemon having had a crush on Tadashi is common in fanworks.
  • Brave: Merida as being either aromantic and asexual, homoromantic and asexual, or lesbian is fanon. This is because the film revolves her being a tomboyish Rebellious Princess not wanting to marry. Her "casual clothes" appearance in Wreck-it-Ralph 2 didn't help her LGBT Fanbase pinning her as gay.
  • In Cars fan fiction, the name of the agency Finn and Holley work for is called C.H.R.O.M.E, which is derived from the video game adaption, but the agency's name is never actually stated in the film itself.
  • Cinderella: Cinderella's real name is traditionally "Ella" in fanworks, though the movies treat "Cinderella" as her real name. Ascended Fanon in the Live-Action Adaptation Cinderella (2015).
  • Disney Animated Canon is often considered to have at least one Shared Universe but fans debate on what goes where and even if certain films are in a different continuity.
  • Fans of An Extremely Goofy Movie consider PJ's love interest to have the Punny Name of "Mocha Chino". It's mentioned constantly as if that is her canonical name, however officially she is known simply as "Beret Girl".
  • Fantasia: Many Disney fans believe that Chernabog is the Arch-Enemy of the Sorcerer's Apprentice, and possibly the Big Bad of the entire Disney Animated Canon. While Chernabog and the Sorcerer's Apprentice never actually meet (they appear in two different shorts), it's admittedly pretty cool to imagine Mickey Mouse clashing with the living embodiment of evil.
  • Humanized fanart of the Finding Nemo trio tend to follow a basic outline: Dory almost always has her hair in a (blue) ponytail. She usually wears a yellow shirt with either blue jeans or blue overalls. Marlin wears an orange-and-white polo with either jeans or kakis. He has short orange hair, with varying amounts greying hair being optional. Nemo looks like a kid version of his dad except for missing most of one arm.
  • How to Train Your Dragon:
    • Fan fiction seems to have reached the consensus that a) Toothless is the Last of His Kind and b) Toothless is responsible for accidentally severing Hiccup's foot. The former would be supported in the third movie where it’s said by the Big Bad that he hunted the Night Furies to near extinction aside from Toothless.
    • Speaking of Toothless, it’s slowly becoming more common in Fanon for Toothless’ lines to be translated in fanfics with the same stuttering, third-person speech that the book Toothless had. Some fanlations of Toothless’ “dialogue” in the movie even incorporate lines from the books themselves note .
    • A lot of fans believe Astrid and Ruffnut are good friends (some even like to ship them but that's a different matter). While it's a reasonable assumption to make as Ruffnut is the only other named teenage girl living on Berk (hell, except for Valka, Heather and Gothi, she's the only other significant female character in the franchise!) there's nothing to indicate that Ruffnut is any closer to Astrid than any other member of the gang, beyond the fact that they were paired up for the Zippleback training exercise in the first film.
    • A lot of fans also consider Snotlout to be Hiccup's cousin, the same as he is in the book series. This is despite the fact that, not only is there never any indication of it at any point, there's actually pretty good evidence against it (Snotlout's father in the animation, Spitelout Jorgenson, isn't even the same character as Hiccup's uncle and Snotlout's father from the books, Baggybum the Beerbelly). Additionally, Snotlout appears to have grown an attraction to Hiccup's mother Valka in the third film, which would certainly not be acceptable if she was his aunt.
    • Before she was revealed to be alive in the sequel, it was common fan interpretation to have Hiccup's mother be dead. Mainly due to complications in child birth or more commonly a dragon attack. The latter being the source of Stoick's hatred of dragons. While there were a couple hints in the movie and in the show to suggest her passing, Stoick's hatred for dragons stemmed from the dragons attacking Berk. Though his wife being taken by a dragon probably didn't help.
  • Ice Age:
    • Manny's first mate and child's names being Millie and Wally, due to one author on fanfiction.net creating a ripple effect with the names.
    • One bit of fanon is that somehow, in some way, Soto and Shira are related to each other by being either father/daughter or siblings.
  • The Incredibles:
    • Mirage from The Incredibles being a Super is quite popular, though no one consensus has been decided on what her powers actually are.
    • Due to her issues with being Super, her "coming out" as Super being similar to coming out as LGBTQ, and her Les Yay-ish fangirling over Helen, Voyd from Incredibles 2 being lesbian or bisexual has caught on. A less common fanon is that she's also a transgender woman due to her design being nonstandard for female characters in the series.
    • Evelyn is an alcoholic. This is implied in Incredibles 2 but not made explicit.
    • Evelyn as either lesbian or bisexual.
    • Edna Mode has attracted some theories:
      • That she's a lesbian, based on the fact that she's single and fashion is associated with the gay community.
      • That she designed Syndrome's suit, since his suit and the suits Edna explicitly designed look as though they were made by the same person. Explanations for his wearing a cape despite Edna's no-cape policy are usually that she's secretly evil and wanted him to die, or she just didn't care if he died.
    • Seeing as some characters' superpowers correlate with their personalities (Dash is energetic and has superhuman speed, Violet is shy and can turn invisible etc), some fans have speculated that personality is what determines powers. Jack-Jack's having many superpowers is speculated to be because he's too young to have a personality, and while Edna does say in the sequel that babies do sometimes have extra powers they outgrow, she doesn't say why.
    • Because Jack-Jack only started showing powers after his sitter Kari started playing Mozart to make him smarter, fans think that his powers kicked in because of the music.
  • The fanbase of The Iron Giant seems to have reached a consensus that Hograth's comment that he "just does the stupid homework" actually belies a deep intelligence that he doesn't recognize simply because of his All of the Other Reindeer treatment.
  • Inside Out:
    • Due to the fact Riley has both male and female emotions, a good portion of the fandom considers her nonbinary. Other guesses include she's bisexual, a trans boy, or her male emotions will turn female when she hits puberty (since all the other characters with same-sex emotions are as old or older than Riley).
    • Riley joining NASA as an adult. This is due to the line "Take her to the moon for me... okay?", said by Bing Bong just before he dies. The idea is that Joy will honor the request and campaigns for Riley to get into a space related career as an eventual goal.
    • Riley's parents' lead emotions being Anger and Sadness, respectively, have caused some fans to hypothesise that, at some point in the past, they suffered from anger management issues (Riley's father) and depression (Riley's mother). Similarly, the bus driver's emotions all being shaped like Anger and having his fire powers have caused fans to see him as having some sort of disorder.
  • Lord Shen, the Big Bad of Kung Fu Panda 2, once had a backstory that involved him being neglected by his parents due to being a sickly albino and left in the care of the Soothsayer, who acted as his nanny. This was ultimately dropped in the final film, but it's rare to find a Shen fanfic that doesn't incorporate it anyway. This is somewhat justified, as the canonical interactions between Shen and the Soothsayer do support this, and there's nothing in the film that really contradicts it either.
  • Lady and the Tramp:
    • Lady became pregnant after spending the night with Tramp. This is due to misconceptions involving the film. Lady's two friends both give her Honorable Marriage Proposals after she spends the night with Tramp and the film ends with Babies Ever After, so it's assumed by many that Lady became pregnant. However, dog pregnancies only last roughly 2 months and there's too big of a gap between the scenes. Trusty and Jock were trying to save Lady's reputation from going on a date with a womanizer like Tramp, not because she was pregnant.
    • The above also started the fanon that Lady was going through her first heat during the film and the strays that attacked her were trying to rape her. Pop Culture Urban Legend is that Disney has even confirmed that, but God Never Said That.
  • The Land Before Time:
    • At the start of the first movie, Cera still has a mother and several siblings, but at the end of said movie she is only seen reuniting with her father. Her mother and siblings are never seen again in the sequels, and Cera's dad eventually gets a new mate. Since VII: The Stone of Cold Fire came out, a popular theory among fans is that Cera's mom and siblings were part of the herd led by Pterano, all of whom got killed by raptors.
    • As a justification for the Sharpteeth becoming less of a threat in the Lighter and Softer sequels, a popular theory is that the Sharptooth of the original movie was, even by Sharpteeth standards, exceptionally dangerous and violent, to the point that even other Sharpteeth feared him.
  • The Little Mermaid (1989):
    • The Little Mermaid and Hercules take place in the same 'verse. Hercules and Ariel are cousins. This is based on the fact that "Triton" (Ariel's dad) is the name of a sea-god in Greek mythology. Note that, if one takes the Hercules cartoon series as canon, it includes a different Triton who doesn't resemble Ariel's father.
    • Ursula is Triton's banished sister. This is because early scripts described her as so. Official media, including the A Tale of... books and the Broadway adaptation, also have Ursula being Ariel's Evil Aunt, which spurs on the fanon.
  • Luca fans seem to have reached a consensus that the sea monsters' name for themselves is "siren".
    • It's commonly assumed that Alberto is a different subspecies of sea monster from Luca and his family, being the carnivore/predator to their primarily herbivorous prey.
  • The One Stormy Night fandom strictly believes the film is romance based. The characters however never refer to each other as anything other then friends, though other series have used that term as a substitute for romantic ones. It helps that in the original books Mei is gender neutral (though Word of God is he saw him as male).
  • Oliver & Company:
    • A lot of fanfiction expand on Dodger's backstory, usually involving him being abandoned by his mother as a puppy.
    • While it's ambiguous in the film as to whether they have feelings for each other, it's not uncommon for fan-art and fanfiction for Dodger and Rita to be depicted as a couple, and, in a few cases, having pups with each other.
  • The Onward fandom seems to have come to a consensus that Arcane Lightning becomes a signature spell for Ian when he's in danger (with one fanfic having him instinctively cast it when he's not even properly coherent) due to how he manages to cast it despite A) it being the hardest spell to use and B) him still being inexperienced at casting magic during the final battle.
  • There's a frequently cited belief that all the Pixar films take place in one universe, due to Pixar themselves having dropped lots of different subtle references, such as the recurrence of the Pizza Planet truck.
  • The Princess and the Frog:
    • Despite (or because of) the fact he's from a fictional country, many fans still throw Fan Wank fits over Prince Naveen's "real" ethnicity — namely, whether he was closer to Mediterranean or Middle Eastern and/or Indian on the sliding scale of Ambiguous Brownness. That is until some people picked up on a throwaway line in "Friends on the Other Side" ("You come from two long lines of royalty") and ran with it. The final conclusion? He's all of them.
    • There's also the matter of Tiana being outbid on the restaurant. It has generally become accepted amongst fans that the "other buyer" story was orchestrated by the mill's owners, with them either outright lying or getting someone to outbid Tiana's offer, in order to prevent a black woman from owning her own business. While this does explain why Tiana conveniently is outbid the very day she tells the owners she's ready to purchase the place (and why no "other bidder" gets angry when Tiana has Louis scare them into selling), there's no official explanation for it in-movie.
    • It's never explained in the film, but it's generally accepted by fans that the curse on Tiana and Naveen ceased being transferable once Tiana broke Dr. Facilier's pendant, explaining why Charlotte was unaffected by kissing Naveen after midnight, when she was no longer a princess.
    • Dr Facilier's first name is Andre.
  • Rango:
    • The hawk's metal beak and Rattlesnake Jake's missing tail have led to the common assumption that they received their respective injuries in a duel with each other. This would certainly explain why Jake freaks out to see a "hawk" in the climax, but it's never mentioned in the film itself.
    • Regarding Jake’s brief comment to Beans about how he “came from Hell”, some fans interpret it literally and think that the “Hell” he was referring to was a rattlesnake round-up, which Jake managed to escape from but saw many of his brethren get slaughtered.
  • In Recess: School's Out, while explaining Philium Benedict's backstory to T.J., Prickly mentions that after Benedict was fired as principal of Third Street School for trying to eliminate recess, he eventually became Secretary of Education, only to get fired from that after he once again tried to impose his anti-recess plan on a national level. Most fans tend to assume the latter event is referring to the events of the Season 4 episode "Recess is Cancelled", despite there being no evidence one way or the other supporting this.
  • Rise of the Guardians:
    • Rise Of The Guardians had the issue of Jack's sister's name. Since she was voiced by the same actress who voiced Pippa (one of Jamie's friends) but never named in the actual film, most people thought that Pippa was Jack's sister instead. Since it's now been clarified, the general name used is Emma, although some fic writers will substitute with their own preference.
    • There are also a few theories about Baby Tooth being a reincarnation of Emma, since they have the same beauty mark under their right eyes.
  • The Rugrats Movie: Most fans think that Didi's preterm labour happened as a direct result of Angelica loudly singing, "Is not!". It's a possibility, but Tommy was also a preemie, so premature birth might just be genetic.
  • Shrek:
    • Though not confirmed, many fans believe that the Fairy Godmother was the witch who originally cursed Fiona as part of her master plan to get Fiona to be with her son.
  • Sleeping Beauty:
    • Several fanworks have Aurora not taking to her birth name. She prefers being called "Briar Rose", which was the name she grew up with. Often times these fanworks have Phillip refer to her as such in private but use "Aurora" in public.
    • Aurora is often depicted as an insomniac due to trauma over her encounter with Maleficent. Her suffering from frequent nightmares is likewise common.
    • As Merryweather never gets to give her gift at the christening, fans like to wonder what it might be. A poll on the Disney Princess site saw that 'intelligence' was the most popular opinion.
    • Some fans like to attribute any idiotic moments (forgetting to block the chimney, leaving Aurora alone) to the curse itself influencing them to do so - ensuring that Maleficent would discover them before the deadline.
  • Fan-works often depict Snow White from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as suffering from insomnia and nightmares after her ordeal.
  • The Sword in the Stone: Many fans were so saddened by the heartbroken girl squirrel that several fanfics have emerged in which Merlin turns her into a human so she and Arthur can be together. Popular fan names include Hazel and Gwen. These stories are accepted by many as being legitimately canonical just because they want so much for the poor little thing to have a happy ending.
  • Tangled:
    • The unnamed Queen is often named "Primrose" in fanon while the King is "Thomas". This is jossed in Tangled: The Series. They're named "Arianna" and "Fredric".
    • Rapunzel is cousins with Elsa and Anna of Frozen due to their resemblance and the brief Easter Egg of her and Eugene attending Elsa's coronation. Generally, their mothers are sisters, though some instead think that Rapunzel's mother is siblings with the sisters' father.
    • Many fans even believe Elsa's and Anna's parents died on a trip to Corona (either for Rapunzel's wedding or for her return party). This idea is often coupled with the above, but not always — some fans believe this without accepting the "relatives" theory.
    • Mother Gothel as Jewish. This is due to her Ambiguously Jewish design and her resemblance to the Jewish Mother trope. Her first name is usually Esther.
  • Toy Story:
    • The fandom has it that (SPOILERED for Rule 34) Woody's pull-string is a sort of erogenous zone, since he lacks the necessary parts for sex. As a corollary, the same applies to Jessie, as she has a pull-string, too.
    • Speaking of Rule 34, the same goes for Buzz and his wings. In Toy Story 2, Buzz's "wing pop" is a quick, one-time joke for the grown ups. Fanfic writers have taken the idea (that Buzz's wings equal boner) and run with it for everything from comedy to kink.
    • Also, unless you ship Buzz/Woody or Woody/Dolly or Woody/Jessie, the figurine of Bo Peep was bought by Bonnie or her mother and is reunited with Woody. This was jossed with Toy Story 4.
    • Many fans theorize that Andy's mom was Jessie's original owner, Emily. There's no confirmation on this, but it would explain why she let her son keep a pair of toys that all but materialized in her house out of nowhere. note
    • A similar and not always exclusive theory is that Andy inherited Woody from his father, who is not seen in the films and is assumed to have left or died when Andy was very young. This would explain both why Andy has a toy modeled after a show from the 1950s, and why he's so attached to it. Later confirmed by Word of God, though fic writers are still left to fill in the actual details.
    • If it's not a fic shipping the two of them, Woody and Jessie are often written as brother and sister.
    • Fanart of Bo Peep without her bonnet will usually show her with a tiny blue ribbon in the back of her curls, even though in the original three films she only has said bonnet off once, and even then the audience never actually sees the back of her head.
    • Many fanartists draw Buzz as a blond. In canon it's never even shown what the purple thing on his head is. There's not even any confirmation that it's removable; for all we know, it could be a part of his head.
  • Turning Red:
    • Although she only shows interest in boys in the film proper, Miriam is frequently interpreted by the fandom to be bisexual or a closeted lesbian, due to her interactions with Mei coming off as being romantic. Her butch-like appearance only adds to this. Said butch appearance has also lead to more than a few fans believing that Miriam is actually trans.
      • It's also becoming very popular (to the point of a specific tag on Archive of Our Own) to write Miriam as having anxiety, though it varies on if it's something she's experienced for a while or a recently developed issue.
      • While no character is immune to swearing in fanfic, Miriam is commonly portrayed as having an awful potty mouth and if anyone is influencing Mei to cuss, however mildly or justified, it's going to be Miriam or at least she's going to get blamed for it by Ming.
    • Priya gets along with goths and shows interest in creepy supernatural things like vampires and werewolves, but dresses in a relatively colorful manner. Since she briefly mentions her parents forbidding her going to the concert, it's often theorized that she's barred from dressing in more goth fashion (though she seems to get around it by wearing black nail polish). Less popular but some people think she'll eventually discover pastel goth (which became popular around 2010) and find that "gothic style, bright colors with touches of black" suits her, also having the additional benefit of being a compromise her parents will consent to.
    • Ming wonders why 4*Town has the number four as their title when there's five of them, so fans chipped in that there used to be four of them, but a member joined them (either Tae Young or Aaron Z.). The band thought of changing the number, but it was too expensive, so they kept it that way.
      • Another slowly emerging theory is that the Aarons are childhood friends who went to what was intended to be an audition for 4*Town's fourth member together but when both of them impressed Jesse, Robaire and Tae Young (or the officials overseeing the auditions), they were both accepted. Alternately, the original intention was to just pick one of them but at their insistence, both were hired (with Jesse, Robaire and Tae Young also being impressed and touched by the duo's loyalty to each other).
    • It's becoming popular fanon that Jesse is Robaire's second-in-command unofficially and that the pair are close friends and confidants.
    • Jesse's two unseen children are commonly interpreted as being twins, one boy and one girl. They also almost always call the other band members "Uncle [Name]".
    • Many a 4*Town fanfic (particularly those on Archive of Our Own) has the older boys nickname Tae Young "Tae-Tae", almost a parallel to "Mei-Mei".
  • Zootopia:
    • Humanized fanart of Judy usually has her with a grey Tomboyish Ponytail.
    • It has become generally accepted that Dawn Bellwether is fond of, if not obsessed with, puzzles and puzzle games.
      • Many fans have decided that some trauma in her past, often an abusive father or a predator attacking her family, caused the mindset that lead to her canon plan. The former is likely going to be used by a writer who wants to make her The Atoner while the latter is done by writers who want her to be understandable but not justified, as hating a whole group for the actions of a few (especially if the few are long since dead or otherwise out of the picture) is a horrible thing no matter what group you and they fit into.
    • Many fans have taken to humanizing Judy as Asian due to comparing stereotypes between Asian women and the way rabbits are stereotyped in the film. If Nick isn't humanized as a redheaded white man, then he's typically humanized as a black man.
    • Nick and Judy becoming roommates occurs in most works, whether it's portrayed as platonic or romantic.
    • Certain Fantastic Slurs have caught on across multiple fan works, such as "chomper" (the equivalent of the "N-word" for predators, with its origin in the original storyline) and "predophile" (naturally, a prey species with a romantic interest in predators).
    • Animals can interbreed no matter their species. This is usually used to have Nick and Judy have a rabbit/fox mix child. How the child looks - whether they're mildly mixed looking like Kevin & Kell or a completely new species - varies from fan to fan.
      • If averted, Nick and Judy will adopt a child. This can be as a replacement for biological kids should the author chose to ignore the above fanon, but can be accompanied alongside biological kids.
    • If Mrs. Wilde will be referred to by her first name, more often than not you should expect it to be either Vivienne or Marian.
