Go To

Mario & Yoshi's Adventure Land is a completed fanfiction adaptation of the Japanese interactive anime of the same name written by nintendoscript15.

An extended adaptation of Super Mario World, Jim Heeding of Austin, Texas receives a Terebikko video game system from a Japanese family friend alongside a Japanese anime cassette titled Mario & Yoshi's Adventure Land. Jim is teleported into the Mushroom Kingdom after starting up the anime and meets the famous Super Mario Bros. Not too long after, they get an invitation to Dinosaur Land from Princess Peach and Yoshi. But things take a serious turn after Bowser captures Princess Peach and Yoshi's friends. So, the trio set off on a fun and exciting adventure while overcoming various obstacles along the way.

Here's the link for the fanfic.

This Fanfiction contains examples of:

  • 10-Minute Retirement: After Luigi lashes out at Mario for laughing at him following the destruction of Wendy’s Castle, Mario is so heartbroken from being insulted that he gives up almost instantly, blaming himself for his actions. Knowing that Peach is counting on Mario for her safety, Yoshi snaps Mario out of it, convincing him to keep going.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Chocolate Island’s name is changed to Chocolate Plateau to avoid using the same landform type for different regions.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In the original, immediately after Luigi runs away from being laughed at after Wendy's Castle blew up, Mario is astonished by Luigi’s mood and brushes off the need for his help. Here, however, Mario only laughs at Luigi’s dirty appearance involuntarily, not intending to hurt Luigi’s feelings, and even then, unlike the original anime, he realizes that the explosives have a delay before they go off and tries to warn him about the fact that he has to get away from there, but he's too slow and Luigi gets caught up in the explosion. When Luigi runs away, screams at him and disowns him, Mario feels remorseful for what he did; his guilt results in him apologizing to Luigi after the final battle. The story is also on DeviantArt, and Mario was altered to match how he's feeling, as the scene uses an earlier screenshot from the scene in the original anime: The Yoshis look concerned over what happened and Mario is shown to be shocked like in this screenshot instead of being annoyed by the inconvenience, but there are photo-shopped tears in his eyes and the placement of his right arm has been altered with a Photoshop of his arm from game artworks to match how he put a hand on his heart after Luigi's insult, though the angle causes it to mix-up with a Yellow Yoshi's body.
  • Adapted Out: Unlike the original, all references to the Terebikko are removed, with the exception of Jim receiving one as an early Christmas present in the beginning.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Both Mario and Luigi call Jim “buddy”.
  • And Your Reward Is Edible: As soon as the group rescues Princess Peach from Bowser’s clutches, they all have a celebratory late lunch at Yoshi’s Island.
  • Ash Face: This is how Luigi ended up after being caught in the implosion of Wendy’s Castle.
  • Big Boo's Haunt: The Donut Ghost House.
  • Big Brother Worship:
    • During the plane ride to Dinosaur Land, Jim says he has an excellent relationship with his older brother Kent and mentions that they hardly argued with each other.
    • As always, Luigi looks up to Mario.
  • Big "NO!":
    • Jim lets out two of them after Mario says the group needs to jump off the Coin Heaven towards the Forest of Illusion because he’s afraid of dying from the jump.
    • Mario does this after Luigi interrupts his apology, yelling for Jim and Luigi to let him speak.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Luigi does this while Mario and the Yoshis laugh at his appearance following the implosion of Wendy’s Castle. They stop immediately when Luigi loses it.
Luigi: BE QUIET! ALL OF YOU! WHY DO YOU ALWAYS LAUGH AT ME AT THE WRONG TIME?! IT’S NOT FUNNY AND YOU KNOW IT!
  • Big "WHAT?!":
    • Bowser does this after finding out that Iggy and Lemmy failed to defeat Mario.
    • Jim does this after Mario explains where the Beanstalk released from a Rotating Block leads to (the Coin Heaven in the clouds).
    • Larry does this after seeing that Mario and friends survived the spiked ceiling.
  • Clown Car: Bowser's Koopa Clown Car.
  • Commonality Connection: Whenever Luigi is in a bad situation, he and Jim talk things over, mainly about how Jim was once in Luigi’s shoes as a young kid.
  • Continuity Nod: During the plane ride to Dinosaur Land, Mario and Luigi talk about how they first found the Mushroom Kingdom. Their story is based off the intro to The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!.
  • Cooldown Hug: In Chapter 27, Luigi hugs Mario when he has a crying fit while he is apologizing to him, reassuring him that he loves him and forgave him and that he too was at fault for how he screamed at him and left him.
  • Damsel in Distress: Princess Peach, as always.
  • Don't Look Down: While at the Coin Heaven, Jim accidentally looks down at the ground, causing him to panic.
  • Egg MacGuffin: Yoshi's friends were sealed inside multi-colored eggs and hidden in Wendy's Castle. The same goes for Yoshi and Red Yoshi, except they were found in Yoshi's Island and Cookie Mountain, respectively.
  • Endless Daytime: The original shows the environment to be daytime throughout its entirety. This is averted in this fanfic, which takes place over the course of two and one-quarter days, complete with the sun setting and rising. Because of that, the group stops at certain points to get their sleep.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: While the Boos swarm around the group, Jim has had enough of the darkness and turns on his flashlight, inadvertently pointing it at some of the Boos, which disappear almost immediately. Mario and Jim are both confused as to why that happened until a few seconds later when Mario deduces that the Boos’ weakness is light. Jim then shines his flashlight at all the Boos until they’re all gone.
  • Extremely Short Timespan: Not including the epilogue, the entire fanfic takes place over the course of two and one-quarter days.
  • Face Palm: Mario does this when Iggy Koopa sends out his second set of minions after the group does away with the first wave.
  • Foreshadowing: During his meeting with the Koopalings in the end, Bowser comes up with an idea of building a castle beneath Peach's castle and lifting it into the sky.
Bowser: I was thinking about building a dungeon underneath Princess Peach's castle and lifting it into the sky, but I don't know how it's gonna work.
  • Gender Flip: In the original, Red Yoshi is a male. But here, Red Yoshi is depicted as a female.
  • Hammerspace: Right after Jim says goodbye to Mario, he tries to figure out a way to get back home to Austin, Texas. All of a sudden, he sees a Terebikko console like the one at his house near the bayshore and is confused about why it appeared in the first place.
Jim: Huh? How did this get here? [approaches the Terebikko and kneels next to it] This looks just like my Terebikko.
  • Help, I'm Stuck!: In the Forest of Illusion, Mario and Yoshi yell for Luigi, Jim, and Red Yoshi after they get trapped in the tarpaulin net caused by accidentally activating a booby trap in the form of a Yellow Question Mark Block. No one hears their cries for help until Luigi calls for Mario after getting the info needed to escape the forest. Several seconds later, Luigi, Jim, and Red Yoshi find Mario and Yoshi trapped in the net and free them.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Jim is a huge fan of Mario and Luigi and gets to go with them to Dinosaur Land.
  • Heroic BSoD: Mario suffers one after Luigi screams that he hates him and wishes he had a different brother.
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: During the scene where the group fights Iggy Koopa’s minions, Jim does this when he sees a Chargin’ Chuck running towards him.
  • I'm Not Doing That Again: After going through the Donut Ghost House, Luigi mutters how he doesn’t want to go visit a haunted house ever again. Unfortunately, fate would step upon him later on.
Luigi: I’m never going into a haunted house again...
  • Intelligent Forest: The heroes encounter two groups of sentient trees within the Forest of Illusion. The first is a group of evil trees who scare the heroes and tell them nothing but lies, saying that they will never escape. The second is their Good Counterpart, the Truthful Trees, who are kind and friendly to Mario and Co. and are always honest. They happily help the heroes and their way out of the forest.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: As soon as Yellow Yoshi hatches following Iggy Koopa’s defeat, he appears to be badly injured. Knowing he’ll slow the group down if he tags along, he stays behind, but informs them about what to expect up ahead.
  • I'm Your Biggest Fan: Jim says this when he first meets Mario and Luigi.
  • Just in Time: At the start of the final battle, Mario and Yoshi try their hardest to attack Bowser only to be trampled by his Mechakoopa army. Bowser prepares to finish them off, but is hit over the head by one of his Mechakoopas thrown by Luigi. It’s revealed that he, Red Yoshi, and Jim barged in at the last second.
  • Lethal Lava Land: Inside the center of Wendy’s Castle is a large circular platform with a moat of lava surrounding it. Mario and friends battle Wendy O. Koopa and her fellow Koopalings in here.
  • Let Me Tell You a Story: Jim does this in both of his private conversations with Luigi as part of reminding him that he and Luigi have things in common.
  • Let's Get Out of Here: After being defeated by Mario and his friends, Wendy O. Koopa orders her fellow Koopalings to get out of her castle with her since she knows that Bowser will destroy it. The castle does get destroyed, but it was Mario who set the explosives off. Luckily, Wendy and her sidekicks managed to escape unharmed.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: Used when the group is stuck in the Forest of Illusion. Mario suggests that everyone split up and try to find a way out of the forest. He stays with Yoshi, Luigi goes with Jim, and Red Yoshi goes alone.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Mario feels guilty after Luigi runs away from being laughed at, not before screaming at him that he hates him and disowning him.
Mario: What h-have I done...? [drops to his hands and knees, sobbing hard]
  • Named by the Adaptation: Originally, most of the regions in Dinosaur Land were not named (some exceptions were Donut Plains and the Forest of Illusion). In the remake, all regions are given their names from Super Mario World (with the exception of Chocolate Plateau). The ghost house and castle seen in the original are also not named. They are given their respective names from Super Mario World (Donut Ghost House and Wendy’s Castle).
  • On Three: Mario does this before the group jumps off the Coin Heaven towards the Forest of Illusion as part of helping Jim face his fear of heights.
  • Original Character: Jim Heeding is nintendoscript15's OC who debuts in this fanfic.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Luigi gives the Yoshis and Mario one after being caught in the castle implosion. He ends with saying he hates Mario and wishes he had a different brother, hurting the latter's feelings badly.
    • Yoshi calls Mario out for giving up after Luigi yells at him and disowns him, screaming at him at the top of his lungs until he nearly loses his voice from all the shouting.
Yoshi: STOP! [Mario stops going back and looks at him with a tear-marked face]
    Mario: What i-is it...?
Yoshi: WHAT IS IT?! YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO ME NOW! WHAT IS EVEN GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND?! AFTER TWO DAYS OF WALKING A LONG WAY TO SAVE PRINCESS PEACH, YOU GIVE UP BECAUSE OF AN INSULT?!
Mario: But it- [Yoshi interrupts him and screams at him again]
Yoshi: DON'T 'BUT' ME, MARIO! USE YOUR HEAD FOR ONCE! THINK OF WHAT PRINCESS PEACH IS GOING THROUGH RIGHT NOW! SHE'S TRAPPED IN BOWSER'S HIDEOUT AND CAN'T GET OUT OF IT ON HER OWN! AND WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO HER IF NO ONE DOES ANYTHING ABOUT IT?!
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • Iggy leaves as soon as all his minions are defeated, realizing that a four-against-one battle will not work out.
Iggy: You... You’ve defeated all of my minions...
Yoshi: Yeah! And now it’s four against one! What are you gonna do, huh?
Iggy: Ugh! That’s it! I’m out of here! [runs away] We'll meet again, Mario!
    • Luigi runs away after being fed up with being laughed at following the implosion of Wendy's Castle.
Luigi: YOU KNOW WHAT?! I'M DONE WITH YOU, MARIO! I HATE YOU SO MUCH! IN FACT, I WISH I HAD A DIFFERENT BROTHER THAN YOU! [runs away, angrily crying]
  • Smooch of Victory: Peach kisses Mario and Luigi as soon as she’s rescued from Bowser’s clutches. She also kisses Jim’s hand since he did the final attack that defeated Bowser.
  • Solid Clouds: These clouds formulate the Coin Heaven above Cookie Mountain.
  • This Is No Time to Panic: Mario says this word for word after Luigi and Yoshi get frightened by the ghostly voice prior to them entering the Donut Ghost House.
  • Three... Two... One...: Mario counts down from three prior to activating the detonator used to demolish Wendy’s Castle. Or so he thought.
  • Throw the Mook at Them: During the final battle against Bowser, Mario and friends try to throw his Mechakoopas back at him. Jim eventually destroys Bowser's Koopa Clown Car's propeller with one final Mechakoopa before defeating the Koopa King.
  • We Will Meet Again: Iggy vows that he'll fight Mario again another day after his minions are defeated.
  • Wham Line: Luigi screaming at Mario that he hates him after he ends up laughing alongside the Yoshis when Wendy's castle explodes and leaves him all dirty. Unlike the original anime, it completely changes the tone of Chapter 21, leaving Mario so distraught at the thought of Luigi disowning him as a brother the he nearly gives up.
Luigi: (at Mario) YOU KNOW WHAT?! I'M DONE WITH YOU, MARIO! I HATE YOU SO MUCH! IN FACT, I WISH I HAD A DIFFERENT BROTHER THAN YOU!
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The very end shows the main characters’ whereabouts one week after the quest to save Peach in Dinosaur Land.

    • Yoshi and Red Yoshi play tetherball for a while before going to their homes for dinner.
  • Where's the Kaboom?: Mario activates the detonator to blow up Wendy’s Castle, but nothing happens. He asks Luigi to go and check on the charges. As soon as Luigi nears the castle, the explosives go off, covering him with soot and dust.
  • You Are Not Alone: During their second private talk, Jim lets Luigi know that everyone will always be there for him no matter what happens.
Jim: Like I said, not one good guy is against you. They either love you as a friend or as a relative. And I'm one of those people. You are an amazing hero, Luigi. And above all that, you are never alone. Everyone loves you.
