Long ago in a distant land, Ivo Robotnik, the egg-shaped master of science, unleashed an unspeakable evil. But a brave blue hedgehog wielding supersonic speed stepped forth to oppose him time and time again. But before the hedgehog could end the long drawn-out battle once and for all, the villain tore open a portal through time and space, and flung him into another world where magic and fantasy are everyday reality. Now the hero seeks to return to his world, and stop the mad doctor from conquering this one too. Along the way he'll meet new friends, new enemies, and just maybe something a little more. All while the fate of two worlds hangs in the balance.
Hang on to your seats boys and girls, cause we're breaking down the walls between dimensions.
Break the Walls Down is a crossover fanfic written by SuperSaiyanD, mainly combining My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic with Sonic the Hedgehog.
The timeline begins shortly after "Dragon Quest" and Sonic Generations in their respective universes.
It can also be read here.
This fanfic provides examples of:
- Appropriated Appellation: The eleventh chapter revealed that Eggman is a nickname given by Sonic when he was a kid. Robotnik liked that nickname and started using it himself.
- Awesomeness by Analysis: Night Flare, Gatekeeper and other Canterlot's forces are very perceptive.
- Beware the Silly Ones: Sonic and Eggman look funny by Equestrian standards, but God help you if you underestimate them.
- Breaking the Fourth Wall:
- Sonic mocks Garble in Chapter 5 by saying Vincent Tong - his real life voice actor - deserves better than having to voice such an intolerable character.
- Pinkie Pie's response to Rainbow excitedly asking the group how often they get to go on adventures to save Equestria: "According to the schedule, about twice per season."
- The Cameo: The three gossiping ponies at the beginning of Chapter 5 are Mane Event, Hoof Beatz, and Blank Canvas, the lead singers from Good Morning Baltimare. Dragon Chaser and Gentle Heart, OCs belonging to DragonChaser123 and Faith-Wolff also appear in the same opening.
- Continuity Nod: The first two chapters situate the timeline, with the characters referencing most recent events: Spike's quest of self-discovery to the Dragon Lands, and Sonic's latest battle with Eggman.
- Cryptic Conversation:
- Soarin and Spitfire’s talk over the radio mentions her special talent, which Soarin warns against, alluding to its danger in the past. Somewhat revealed as the ability to surround herself in fire, which also increases her speed to nearly supersonic levels.
- Ultimo, Gristle and Skyboom mention an old friend that they had a falling out with.
- Fix Fic: This fic shows that Equestria's military forces aren't useless.
- Foreshadowing: An unidentified figure follows Sonic and Eggman through the wormhole.
- Fugitive Arc: From the moment Sonic drops into Equestria, he’s immediately beset by their military, all believing in some capacity that he was some kind of dangerous invader. He’s forced to not stay in one place for long out of being recognized.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Rainbow doesn't like Sonic mostly because she's jealous of him.
- Heh Heh, You Said "X": Scootaloo after Sonic makes up a joke about cutie marks.Sonic: "Huh, so that's it. And here I thought everyone just got tattoos on their rumps as a fashion statement."Scootaloo: (giggling) "He said rump..."
- Humble Pie: Sonic’s overall effect on the Equestrian military when he first arrives. He systematically embarrasses Luna, the royal guard, Shining Armor and the Wonderbolts in the course of one night. Spitfire is more and more incensed by his constant taunting and the defeat of her team, finally snapping after a particularly crude antic. This causes her to lose it and she flies after him alone, becoming quite literally Burning with Anger in her attempt to catch him.
- Hypocritical Humor: This little piece:Rainbow Dash: "Hedgehog? What kind of hedgehog is blue, stands on two legs and talks?"
Sonic: (while lifting an eyebrow) "Said the talking, rainbow-haired horse with wings?" - Mathematician's Answer: Sonic's response when Applejack asks if Dr. Eggman is mad as in angry or crazy.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Princess Luna goes through this for falsely persecuting Sonic after he returned to Canterlot and saved everypony's lives.
- Named by the Adaptation: The three colts who resemble the Duck Tales triplets from Princess Celestia's micro comic are given the names Able (Red), Gable (Green), and Fable (Blue).
- Oh, Crap!: Everypony goes through this when Sonic explains what would happen if the Chaos Emeralds were to fall into the wrong hands.
- Reassigned to Antarctica: Bloviate threatens to do this to Dossier (Doss for short) if she doesn't get him a story about the "Blue Demon".
- Princess Celestia demotes Umbra as punishment for her transgressions as a royal guard and antagonizing Sonic. She is forced to watch over and train any recruits looking to join the royal guard. Umbra sees this as the worst thing that could have happened to her.
- Series Goal: For Sonic, it's finding a way back home after being pulled into Equestria.
- Ship Tease: Between Sonic and Princess Celestia after the former saved the latter from being killed by Eggman.
- Reference Overdosed:
- The title is taken directly from Chris Jericho's theme song.
- The summary references the opening narration to Samurai Jack.
- The opening confrontation between Sonic and Eggman is based on the trailer of a cancelled Sonic/MLP crossover project.
- Eggman's first big monologue to Sonic contains several. It mainly references Snively's words from Issue #200 of the Archie comics, but also includes a few lines from notable, older renditions of animated villains. The last line of the chapter repeats Eggman's intended final farewell to him from a past adventure.
- Most Equestrians continually mistake Sonic's species, referring to him as a rat, which annoys him thanks to past experience. Subverted when Garble of all creatures is the first one to get it right.
- Sonic’s exchange with the Wonderbolts contain several superhero references. His joke that they “look like an 80’s rock band” is a Fantastic Four reference, as is the less subtle comment when he straight up called them by the same superhero team name. He also refers to them as the Doom Patrol. The chase that follows is based on the similar race with the S-Team from the first episode of Sonic X. There are a number of other game references: the leaping between rock formations, the Drop Dash ability he uses to survive his leap off the cliff, and the two choices for background music throughout.
- Sonic mumbles in his sleep, apparently having a nightmare of someone coloring his arms.
- Continuing the inaccurate labeling, Skyboom calling Sonic a porcupine and his response references an exchange from another crossover work of the same genre.
- Skyboom and Sonic's short songs are both theme music from different media.
- Sonic jokes about not seeing a green giant with a white cape and turban out in the wasteland that is the Dragon Lands. He also refers to the gang of teenage dragons as wild Charizards.
- The Badniks and style used in Eggman's invasion of Canterlot largely come from the early chapters of the rebooted comic series.
- Pinkie Pie calls Sonic by a popular mistranslation of his name Mr. Needlemouse (usually thought to be his prototype name) when they first meet.
- In chapter 10, the Egg Gila's ultimate weapon is named the Power Laser, coming from the two-player mode of Power Laser, an older game.
- When a reporter asks Sonic if he tried to kidnap Princess Celestia, Sonic's response is that kidnapping a princess is a spikey-shelled reptile thing.
- With the help of Elements of Harmony, Sonic transforms into a form that looks like Ultra Instinct.
- Applejack calls Sonic Sugarhog, a nickname Bunnie Rabbot also called him.
- Too Much Alike: Rainbow Dash doesn't like Sonic because he's very similiar to her (both love to brag, have Leeroy Jenkins - tendencies, etc.).
- What the Hell, Hero?:
- In chapter 10, Sonic chews out Umbra for trying to attack him while innocents are getting hurt by Eggman's army.
- From the same chapter Spike calls out everyone for still doubting Sonic despite the fact he's risking his life at the moment to save them all.
- In chapter 11, Sonic chastises Rainbow Dash for thinking she can take on Doctor Eggman, pointing out that Canterlot nearly fell if he hadn't been there. Sonic states that regardless of his antics, Eggman can still be dangerous. Later proven right when Celestia is almost shot in the head by an E-1000 shortly after.
- Chapter 12 has everyone in the council room call out Captain Umbra for severely injuring ponies during a training exercise and ignoring Eggman's attack on Canterlot to fight Sonic.
