  • Comments: A prolific author who writes smut, feels, fluff, angst and feels and feels all in one, with works set in the modern world and good ole Westeros. Stories are (so far) mostly rated M, do not read if you are opposed to smut and feels. Their stories have Broken People Healing, and Very Nice Speeches. Love their take on the characters, and how they stick to pre-S8 canon portrayal of the characters. (Have a few works written with ashleyfanfic, a fellow Jonerys-supporter.)

  • Comments: A prolific author in the fandom, their stories come recommended, and there is very little smut (so far), and more of description, feels and angst. And heavy delving into the characters' thought process. They wrote a canon-divergence of S8 after Missandei and Rhaegal's death, a three-parts series where Dany chose to look for the House with the Red Door and Lemon Trees and gave up on being Queen to look for a home. Pairing is Jon/Dany.

  • Comments: A rising author in the Game of Thrones fandom. Her writings include the ongoing story, Scholar’s Mate, a rewrite of seasons 7 and 8 of the HBO series Game of Thrones. The author is able to seamlessly combine elements of the show and the book. The author also uses knowledge of the aSoIaF universe to help introduce and or explain the absence of important characters that were omitted by the series. She is a definite must read.

  • Comments: An excellent author. His main pairing is Jon/Daenerys but he does develop other couples. He has the ability to take unlikeable people from canon and make them sympathetic (except for Robert Baratheon). I thoroughly recommend his works. He frequently mentions how much he dislikes Season 8 and the writers who wrote it.

The Boy Who Watched the Kingdom Burn by SeleneDucky123

  • Recommended by Pineysammy Marie
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Rating: Mature
  • Synopsis: This story follows a kindhearted peasant boy named Cedrick whose life was ripped apart by the arrival of Daenerys Targaryen. Now eleven-year-old Cedrick embarks on a dangerous journey to avenge his family and find a secure home for him and his sister, Hazelle.
  • Comment: Once a short story, the author managed to make a strong story that really draws you in. The story is still recent, so not all of the characters have been established, but the ones she does establish are very well written. Cedrick is my personal favorite because not only is he a loving big brother to his little sister, but he is a very compelling underdog with emotional depth. He's optimistic, he's brave, he's intelligent, he's perspective, and he is very interesting to read about. So check it out. It's worth it.

And the Giant Awoke by RemoWilliams

  • Recommended by Caellach Tiger Eye
  • Status: Dormant; last updated May 2019
  • Synopsis: "What if Tyrion actually did fight The Mountain by himself?" An Alternate Universe story which diverges from Episode 4x07, where before Oberyn can offer to Champion for Tyrion in his Trial-By-Combat, the Imp instead ponders seriously on his jape to Bronn about vanquishing the Mountain on his own. This leads to him developing an ingenious idea which enables him to kill Gregor Clegane, proving - in the eyes of the Gods - his innocence regarding Joffrey's murder; of course, Tyrion is still disillusioned by his family now, and so he arranges to leave for Braavos under his own terms and build a new life there... And that is when things get interesting.
  • Comments:: This story is set firmly in the universe of the Tv Series, as things stood near the end of Season 4, but diverges in more ways than just 'for want of a nail' afterwards (the story was started when Season 4 was wrapping up its initial airing). Nonetheless, the author seems well-acquainted with content from the books and so the narrative is enriched by further elements, becoming its own story in due time. Tyrion's developing his own power-base on his own terms is genuinely inspirational, and he becomes a major player in Essossi politics and beyond; not only does he take Arya into his Braavosi household, but when his presence affects things in Westeros it becomes even more unpredictable to see where the story is going. Tywin being alive for a longer period of time makes for its own interesting ripple effects separate from Tyrion's influence, so the narrative quickly goes Off the Rails in a glorious, even emotionally satisfying, fashion before too long.

  • Synopsis: The heir to Riverrun was a drunk, a whore-monger, a dilettante...Until one day, everything changed. A modern ASOIF fan lands up inside the heir to the Riverlands, Edmure Tully. Inspired from the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court...
  • Comments: Similar to a Connecticut Yankee in King Robert's Court but the author has put meticulous detail into World building and Trade on the Narrow Sea and how an SI's actions can affect people hundreds of miles away. Also, a very gritty, realistic trait on the common modern-person-in-Westeros fic.

Game of Stacks by Comma Splice

  • Recommended by Electroninja

  • Synopsis: Dr. Ned Stark, Professor of History at Crownlands University is asked by his old friend, College President Robert Baratheon, to become the new director of the school library. His new job causes dramatic changes to his family's life. Meanwhile, Tywin Lannister, CEO of Casterly Rock Enterprises deals with his disappointing children and finds a potential apprentice in his new intern, Arya Stark.
  • Comments: A High School AU, Game of Stacks is both Game of Thrones in a modern world educational system as well as the implied future of Westeros. The characterization is spot on, with wonderful little changes thrown into each character to modernize them to the setting.

[[How to ruin a Kingdom by Lost Carcosa

  • Recommended by allfictions
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: A Continuation fic (and simultaneously a Hate Fic), which examines what might happen to the Seven Kingdoms as a result of the political shake ups, deliberate or not, Season 8 left Westeros in. Started as a Crack Fic before bloating into an actual story.
  • Comments: Definitely not for everyone, as it was written by the author's own admission out of spite for the final season of the show, as well as some of the earlier seasons that the author considers started the Seasonal Rot. If you liked the final season or the show in general, it is not for you. However, if you disliked it, this might be to your speed. It strips characters of Plot Armor and make the plot conform to its previous logic of actions having consequences, something many argue was missing in later seasons. And when it's not poking fun at the show, it actually sets up interesting scenarios for Westeros post-Long Night.

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Ned Stark's POV on Robert's Rebellion, from his last days in the Eyrie to his return to Winterfell: how war shook his certainties, changed his vision of life and made him lie to keep a promise.
  • Comments: This story doesn't diverge too much from A Song of Ice and Fire or Game of Thrones, with the exception of including a 12-year-old Sandor "The Hound" Clegane as part of the Lannister forces. It's fairly realistic in Ned's POV with his growing disillusionment with Robert's attitude toward battle and women and his guilt over his involvement in the Knight of the Laughing Tree.

Purple Days by baurus

  • Recommended by Six Ways To Sunday, Materioptikon
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Prince Joffrey Baratheon dies to the Strangler on his wedding day. In his final moments, he falls into endless agony as his vision melts into purple waves. He wakes up back at his apartments in the Red Keep, shortly before the Royal Family makes for Winterfell. Certain that this can only be divine will, he lives his life again, making sure to punish those he considers responsible ... and dies again. And again, he returns to the same point. Over and over and over.
  • Comments: Excellent timeloop fic that has plenty of character growth for Joffrey (with several false high points even!), epic overarching plot, tons of worldbuiding, and doorstopper length (600k+ as of the moment this rec is posted). While Joffrey is slowly ground into dust and then remolded into decent human being that still has some flaws (and not an unstoppable terminator as in some other timeloops) he gets many non-repetitive adventures in and outside of Westeros. And when truth of timeloop purpose is revealed... well, let's say word "epic" in relation to this plot is pretty justified. Another point for this fic is writing - it's very good and keeps you engaged for all it's many, many arcs.

  • Pairings: Catelyn Stark/Ned Stark, Past-Jon Snow/Ygritte, Oberyn Martell/Ellaria Sand
  • Comments: Oh My Gosh, this fic! A very interesting variation of Peggy Sue where Jon is constantly being reborn into a new life, each slightly different than the last. This fic starts with his latest death, and his subsequent awakening in his twelve-year-old body as Arya is telling him the direwolf pups are being born to their mother, who came to Winterfell after being injured in her shoulder by a boar. Jon takes this omen of fortune and goes running with it, leading to several changes in the Stark household and beyond. Mostly Jon's POV, with "interludes" of Ned, Cat, Jon Arryn, Robb, and others.

  • Comments: A look at how Thoros's bringing Beric back to life affects both men emotionally and spiritually. This fic is very thoughtful and looks into Beric's emotions every resurrection. The author's other work is also heavily focused on Beric and Thoros before and during events of the show.

Epilogue: After the Wheel by u/kayester

  • Comments: This is a fanmade epilogue to the series posted on r/Game Of Thrones, describing everything that might've happened in the years after the series. It adds a lot more closure to the ending offered by the show, while still sticking with the show's overall tone. If the reddit Gold and upvotes are anything to go by, this is probably in a lot of fans' headcanons now. Definitely worth a read.
    • A couple of other users offered their own pieces of content in the comments: u/aryasneedle42 detailed what Sansa's life after the series might've been like as Queen of the North, while u/cronnyberg suggests that Arya may have indeed found land West of Westeros.

Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence/Modern Setting

As the name implies, for fanfics that diverges from canon, are in an alternate universe, or stories that are set in the modern-day, or anything in-between. For Modern fics, Please put R+L =/= J if Jon is not a Targaryen, and R+L = J if he is. For non-Modern fics, and non-Canon Divergence Alternate Universe but really Alternate Universe (I don't know the trope for that), put R+L =/= J if Jon is not a Targaryen, and leave it alone if he is. Because honestly, there will be no end of that tag.

Winter Came (with Fire and Blood) by frombluetored

Her heart is as powerful and frantic as Drogon’s wings when he takes flight. She thinks the fear might consume her whole.
“Is that all right?” she asks softly. She nearly trembles.
And for a moment, the world is warm, small, safe. Jon has her in his arms, his body pouring into hers, his lips on her lips, his love a vast fire— and Dany, the Unburnt. She lets him burn her alive, delighting in the heat of his palms, the burn of his beard against her skin.
When it stops— when he pulls back— it’s sharper than ice.
  • Comments: This fic is canon up to S08E5, in which BoatBaby is a thing, and Daenerys and Jon stay true to their characters, in fact, this is where most characters stay true to their personalities instead of devolving into some caricature of themselves for the sake of drama in S8, and gives them an excellent reason for why things devolved as it is. This author knows the characters very well, and wrote them in a way that is so true to what the shows (before S8) presented them as, that it makes me feel like this is a better ending for the season.

  • Pairings: Jon Snow/Daenerys Targaryen, Arya Stark/Gendry Waters, Robb Stark/Margaery Tyrell
  • Comments: Modern setting. Ranchers and farmers, mafias (though they don't appear that quickly), Dany Storm, the new 'marm' of the schoolhouse, Jon Snow, bootlegger and war hero, Margaery Tyrell, whose marital status is a spoiler, Robb Stark, fellow bootlegger and war hero, so on and so forth. Note that its after a war (which war remains a spoiler), so there will be certain time-period perspectives of lives and the roles of men and women in said particular period. R+L =/= J

An Empire of Ice and Fire by Longclaw_1_6

  • Status: Complete
  • Rating: M (for violence, mentions of abuse, death, violence, violence, and lots of smut)
  • Synopsis: A simple twist of fate. When impending famine threatens one of the northern houses, Ned Stark's honor and duty compels him to wade right in the middle of it. Taking Jon with him, the two journey to Pentos, where their paths cross with a young Daenerys Targaryen. Sparks fly and destiny is fulfilled, an entire story of Ice and Fire rewritten. Jonx Dany starting in Season 1.
  • Pairings: Jon Snow/Daenerys Targaryen, Arya Stark/Gendry Waters, Robb Stark/Margaery Tyrell, Podrick Payne/Sansa Stark, Grey Worm/Missandei, Bronn/Tyene Sand
  • Comments: Love the war chapters, the fighting and battles are drawn-out (description and chapter-wise) and highly detailed, the personalities are well-done, and though there are times where it might turn out to be somewhat self-indulgent, it's still a good story and I would recommend it for readers who adores such fics.

I Hear The Bells [ringing joyless and triumphant] by SarahRoseSerena

  • Recommended by Asphaleios-III
  • Status: Dormant; last updated December 2019
  • Rating: M
  • Synopsis: What if you could do it all again? Pass through the looking glass darkly, all your gravest sins unraveling, and learn to light the darkness in your soul. What if the Mother of Dragons could learn to resist the siren song of fire and blood? What if she could find balance between the dragon and the woman? And what of the pack? Is there no middle ground to be met from a dragon among wolves, but the right path to be forged of a lone wolf finding home with dragons?
Everyone dies. And then they live again. Yet can the bells ever be unrung?
After the hell they all found themselves in, Dany returns to the crux of her crossroads and makes a different decision. Back to Essos, back to liberation, back to the ones who truly loved her. She learns to plant trees. She learns to build families and trust friends. She learns to love, widely, freely, safely. She heals. She hopes. And she continues the fight against all those that seek to conquer her and her coveted children.
Eventually, she even finds a new path forward with her soulmate, raising a stronger foundation out of the ashes of their ruined love.
  • Pairings: Jon Snow/Daenerys Targaryen (eventually), Grey Worm/Missandei, Oberyn Martell/Ellaria Sand
  • Comments: Time-Travel, where Dany never set foot in Westeros, remembers everything about her past life, where Drogon set the entire world on fire after Dany's death and Bran redid the timestream - and oops Dany remembered more than she should. Lots of Angst, lots and lots of angst, but more of Dany believing in herself and becoming the Empress of Essos and better known as the Kingmaker to the Westerosi (a lie, since she makes more Queens than Kings).

  • Pairings: Jon Snow/Daenerys Targaryen

A Ballad of the Dragon and She Wolf by Weirwood_Bonsai

  • Recommended by Skagit
  • Status: Ongoing, updated multiple times a week
  • Rating: Explicit (strong language in almost every chapter, gory battle scenes, VERY explicit sex)
  • Synospis: The Wall has fallen and the Army of Dead has invaded the North. Jon Snow must unite the realms of Men against the Night King. His tomboy sister Arya and glamorous lover Daenerys form an unlikely bond that will alter the course of history. Meanwhile in the South, Queen Cersei is contintuing on her reign of terror and has employed the Known World's greatest mercenary company to defend her interests (don't worry, they have elephants). Jon, Arya, Daenerys, and their allies must defeat the Night King and Mad Queen by any means necessary. In this alternate Game of Thrones the timeline diverges from the final season and deviates increasingly as the story goes on.
  • Pairings: Jon Snow / Daenerys Targaryen, Sam / Gilly, Yara Greyjoy / Ellaria Sand, Missandei / Grey Worm, Tormund / Maege Mormont (in a flashback)
  • Comments: This fic does a really good job with the Jonerys ship, they have great chemistry. Another intersting thing is while it takes place mostly within the show's continuity (everything up to season 7 happned), there are lots of books elements like characters taken out of the show and a ton of obscure lore.

Rhaegar then sends Ned Stark to Tower of Joy to bring back Lyanna and their unborn child, but Ned Stark has other plans. Not for Catelyn fans and Ned Stark fans.
  • Pairings: Jaehaerys "Jon Snow" Targaryen/Daenerys Targaryen/Rhaenys Targaryen, Rhaegar Targaryen/Elia Martell/Lyanna Stark, Catelyn Tully/Ned Stark, Aegon Targaryen/Margaery Tyrell
  • Comments: A very good story, it looks like the nail is Arthur Dayne is at the Battle of the Trident rather than the Tower of Joy so Arthur was able to protect Rhaegar from being killed by Robert. It seems this greatly embittered Ned who thought Robert would have made a great king.

My Father's Son by Longclaw_1_6

  • Recommended by Eric W; Naru Hina Fan
  • Status: In-Progress
  • Rating: M (for violence, domestic abuse, death, violence, and lots of smut)
  • Synopsis: Rhaegar Targaryen is living lies about himself. But as his father descends into madness, Rhaegar is forced to marry the daughter of Lord Stark of Winterfell. Lyanna Stark not only brings love and warmth to the once brooding Prince, but also rekindles his love with Elia Martell. But soon the Prince will be forced to confront his father and take the throne. Pre-main series.
  • Pairings: Lyanna Stark/Raegar Targaryen/Elia Martell, Dacey Mormont/Arthur Dayne, Benjen Stark/Ashara Dayne, Ned Stark/Cersei Lannister
  • Comments: By the same author of An Empire of Ice and Fire, this story offers a look into what might happen if Aerys took the steps to make Lyanna's tryst with Rhaegar legal rather than the scandal and misunderstandings of Canon. A bit indulgent in the sex scenes, but at the same time, it offers a compelling picture of the potential Rhaegar had lost in playing The Dutiful Son rather than coming into his own alongside both his wives.

Instead, they took it as an opportunity to learn something about Jon they never knew. When they got results, so many things made perfect sense.

  • Synopsis: Sansa Stark is rich, bored, and desperate for her own Mr. Darcy - an almost disastrous combination that leads her to buy a trip to Austenland - the resort where you get to practically live as if it was 1814 and find your own Austen happily ever after! When she finally gets her much poorer (and about twice as Austen obsessed) friend Brienne Tarth to agree to go with her, they both find that the land of Jane Austen is not exactly what they expect.
  • Pairings: Brienne of Tarth/Jaime Lannister, Sansa Stark/Podrick Payne
  • Comments: This fic is an absolute delight. The author does a fantastic job of keeping everyone in character and somehow stops this story from being so completely cheesy. There is a lot of humor and a lot of nice friendship moments between Sansa and Brienne.

As the Seven Kingdoms spiral into chaos, Steffon is forced to become a leader.
  • Comments: A fanfic following a legitimate son of Robert Baratheon and Cersei. Steffon is a very intriguing and likable protagonist with a good balance of strengths and weaknesses. The romance between him and Arya is also very engaging, and the story combines elements from the tv show, the books, and the Telltale video game.

"Invite her, demand her, steal her—whatever you choose, Prince Oberyn, choose it soon. Else my lady wife shall break into more pieces than the stars." • Tags: 'For want of a nail', Shipping
  • Comments: It's a long fic, so far there's been 98 chapters and it's not finished yet, still it is absolutely worth it; even though it's a shipping fic, the romance element doesn't become the centerpiece of the fic, it cares deeply about the plot. It's fasinating and really digs into the alternative storyline it created just by changing a little thing.

Winter is coming, but magic is might.

She played, the Game of Thrones, to win...
  • Pairings: Stannis/Azula
  • Comments: Putting Princess Azula in the middle of the cutthroat scheming and politics of King's Landing is an idea that works so well it's amazing that more fics haven't been written with this premise. The author bounces back and forth across the timeline between Azula's arrival at the tail end of Robert's rebellion and the main timeline of the novels. • Also available in comic format, first page here. It also has extensive side-material, detailing the traits of all factions, a map of the continent, among others.
    • An amazing story, with a high amount of tension that makes you want to just keep reading it and hope it update fast. Fortunately, it does. Although there are certain canon characters that are deliberately made to be different, it has used all of them very nicely. • Synopsis: "Basically it's a tale of what the mind of the mildly sociopathic boy genius Octavian from HBO's Rome gets up to in the body of the violently psychopathic boy imbecile Joffrey from HBO's Game of Thrones."
  • Comments: An interesting fanfic where Octavian from HBO's Rome ends up in the body of Joffrey before the first season. As a result of this, the new Joffrey (who fans nickname as [JOctavian]) is much nicer and smarter than the original Joffrey, which earns him the support and respect of the Starks who not only approve of his engagement with Sansa but also since the order to assassinate Bran never happened due to the original Joffrey's actions, the animosity between the Starks and Lannisters never happened which leads to both families to work together to help Joffrey rule Westeros.

  • Comment: Less crossover and more Fusion Fic, the story imagines a world where A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones are filled with familiar Marvel characters and how this would alter the story. Those thinking it will simply be a retelling of Game of Thrones are in for a surprise when events begin to quickly diverge, including Tony legitimizing Jon Snow and making him his heir while Tyrion takes Sam as his squire, thus eliminating the Wall plot for much of the first book, Arya apparently being scouted by the Brotherhood of Mutants, and the Mountain suffering two defeats at Iron Man's hand. The author has promised that by Book 2, entitled A Crack of Thunder that events will be radically different with a much altered War of the Five Kings. Now that it has been completed, the series is in its third installment which is even more different from the established ASOIAF/GOT canon.

A Throne Nobody Wants (A Throne Nobody Wants) by Vahn

  • Recommened by ramber
  • Status: Dead; last updated January 2017
  • Crossover with: Fate/stay night
  • Synopsis: A humorous take on what happen if FSN Mordred, Shirou and Arturia ends up in Westeros after their deaths at certain points in their lives. Featuring a Gender Bent Shirou and Arturia.
  • Comments: "What happens when a different person is appointed in one of the major roles. Crack."
    • Although the author still has some spelling mistakes the overall plot is dynamic. Mordred doesn't let being a girl faze him, he's the Warrior Queen and antihero. while Arthuria or Arthur is Noble Exiled Prince empathize on NOBLE. But my favourite was definitely Shirou, who although more flawed and weak between the two still keeps his core of heroism. Although currently he's more Goddess of the Hearth, I get the feeling there more in store for him. winks ;D

The White Wolf of Westeros by DrakeCross

  • Recommended By: Queszcarza_Algazy, Eric W
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Crossover with: The Witcher
  • Synopsis: The Wild Hunt is defeated and Ciri steps beyond to face the source of the White Frost. However something goes wrong and Geralt risks himself as he follows her, ending up in the land of Westeros. Dealing with new intrigue and politics, he will have to decide who he can trust while trying to save his adopted daughter...along with the lives of both worlds!
  • Comments: A very well put together story still ongoing, but with a clear vision. Set post video games, and in an amalgam of book and show, the Witcher characters that enter westeros are already the Experienced Protagonist to guide other characters to new places. While it starts steady with only small tweaks, like a pebble that starts an avalanche, by the time book 2 begins, everything has already changed in the Game of Thrones. Definitely a worthwhile read.

    • The quest is hard but fair. Stupidity is punished ruthlessly, but quick thinking can lead to great rewards.

Spartans Don't Play Games by You will not find me

  • Recommended by: Tallens, Victorio M Wolff-Haddock
  • Crossover with: Halo
  • Status: Active
  • Synopsis: The Tourney of Harrenhall was the greatest of its kind in Westeros. It was a grand show of the power of house Whent that drew the attention of all seven kingdoms. However, the Westerlands have arrived with strange new allies. Great warriors who bear the sigil of an eagle with arrows and lightning in its claws. Who are these new allies, and what do they mean for Westeros?
  • Comments: Kurt Ambrose and his SPARTAN-IIIs wind up in Westeros. Hiding the true extent of their capabilities, they style themselves as "House Terra", under the sigil of an eagle, a banner under House Lannister. While they hide their true capabilities from the rest of the Seven Kingdoms (and Tywin Lannister), they do begin to effect the course of history, which the story follows as they make their moves. Already, the course of Westeros has been thrown off the rails, and for the most part done in a believable and entertaining way. The rumors and speculation surrounding them (since they don't allow anyone near their base) are fun to read, as is Tywin's thinking when he begins to realize House Terra is only under his control because they allow it.
