Ethereal Collective

As the Ethereal Empire waged their war against the hordes of the Synthesized, it eventually became clear to one of the Imperators that the chance for victory had been lost. Though the end would not yet come for some time, this Imperator established a hidden cryogenic facility in which they could wait out the war and rise again once the Synthesized had left. This Imperator and his chosen Ethereals entered sleep, and many years later they awoke to a changed galaxy. Having learned the failings of the Empire, they sought out to gain the allegiance of other species to fight the Synthesized, and in time were lead to a primitive world known as Earth.

  • Back from the Brink: From an empire of billions to a couple dozen survivors at most.
  • Battle Aura: Possessed by all Ethereals, causing different effects on unshielded minds depending on the individual.
  • General Failure: As a rule, Ethereals are excellent at their individual pursuits but are ruinously awful leaders who almost always fall into personal obsessions and ignore the wider world.
  • Scary Dogmatic Aliens: Though they've rejected the Absolute Xenophobe tendencies of the Empire, the Collective Ethereals still almost universally treat aliens as tools and test subjects for their idiosyncratic ambitions.
  • Vestigial Empire: Though they reject the title of the Ethereal Empire, they are a group numbering in the dozens at most and are almost wholly reliant on their alien servants.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: The Ethereals are so focused on their individual ways of doing things that the "collective" is largely a fiction, particularly for controversial members like Isomnum and the Creator or radicals like Sana'Ligna.

The Ethereals of the Collective

    The Imperator

The Imperator, Viatorian, Destroyer of the Prime

As the war against the Synthesized turned against the Ethereal Empire, they took the radical step of enacting a program to produce a superior breed of Ethereal. These would become the Imperators, ten of which would be chosen to coordinate the war. Among them was Viatorian, the only one of their number to ever destroy one of the Synthesized's Primes.

Soon, however, the enemy's response would prove so overwhelming that Viatorian sought to prioritize surviving and rebuilding over fighting a losing war. To that end, he sought out several key individuals across all facets of Ethereal society, forming what is now known as the Ethereal Collective.

  • The Ace: As one of the Ten, he was this even amongst the Imperators themselves.
  • Battle Aura: His causes a gradually increasing loyalty to his person and his worldview.
  • Berserk Button: Openly insulting Sicarius seems to be one, if Caelior's punishment for doing so is any indication.
  • The Corrupter: If there's anyone to blame for Patricia turning her back on XCOM and ADVENT in favor of the Collective, it's him.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: As an Imperator, he was a hero in the old Empire's eyes. His destruction of the Prime Flagship also led to the Synthesized redoubling their efforts against the Ethereals.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Downplayed; he's not inactive per se, but as far as the war on Earth goes, he is perfectly content with having his subordinates lead the Collective's armies to battle rather than directly participate in it, even if he could easily end it by himself. The only time he actually steps foot on Earth is to rescue Patricia from the Red Riders.
  • Red Baron: "Destroyer of the Prime". Considering he is the only Imperator (and, by extension, Ethereal) to have destroyed a Prime Flagship, it is very much deserved.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Demonstrates the ability to simultaneously mind control every human on Earth, psionic or not. The war continues purely because he wishes it, and Aegis claims even a direct nuclear strike would not harm him. Only the reality warping powers of the Synthesized ever posed a threat to the Imperators.
    The Overmind

Overmind

The last surviving Ethereal to bear the title of the Overminds, and one of the oldest living Ethereals prior to the Synthesized conflict, this enigmatic figure is the right hand of the Imperator.

  • The Dragon: He is the Imperator's most trusted advisor.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: Subverted, since the Imperator eventually adopts the same objectives as him, but his primary focus is the extinction of all Sovereign Ones. Even the Synthesized are a secondary concern next to that.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": No one knows his true name, and he's known only by the title of the Ethereals' master telepaths.
  • Long Game: Ever since he learned the truth about the Sovereign Ones, he's conducted a galaxies-wide scheme to rid the universe of them, alongside the rest of the One Hundred.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He is this to all the Ethereals of the Milky Way, and by extension, the Imperators and the Ethereal Collective. If one counts his awakening of those who would become the rest of the One Hundred, he can actually be considered this to all Ethereals.
  • Time Abyss: This guy is old even compared to other Ethereals; he was alive before they discovered the key to immortality. And as it turns out, he's literally the first Ethereal, period.
  • Walking Spoiler
    The Battlemaster

Iudexas, Battlemaster of the Ethereal Collective

The military leader of the Collective, the last of the Battlemasters takes command of the invasion of Earth following the death of the Ravaged One. Nearly invincible in battle and committed to a code of honor, his methods both challenge ADVENT and provide humanity with opportunities for continued resistance.

  • Badass Cape: Wears a red one when he goes to battle.
  • Berserk Button: Do not ever target enemy military families, or children. The Creator ends up pushing both of them simultaneously, and the Battlemaster is only stopped from killing her and destroying Paradise because of the Imperator's intervention.
  • BFS: His main weapon, which he masterfully uses either regularly or with the aid of telekinesis. Like his armor, it is also made of Dead World metal, allowing it to cut through even alien alloys
  • Cool Sword: His primary weapon, made of Dead World metal and able to cut through even alien alloys.
  • Frontline General: He always fights alongside the Collective's soldiers when leading a campaign.
  • Given Name Reveal: He is first referred to as Iudexas in Chapter 67, by Gabriel.
  • The Heavy: As the current commander of the Collective's war effort - both on a strategic and tactical level - he is the most prominent threat faced by XCOM and ADVENT. Even when other Ethereals take the field, they're ultimately subordinate to him when it comes to the war on Earth.
  • Honor Before Reason: Will not engage in one-sided violence or directly target civilians. He rejects a plan by the Zar'Chon to use clandestine methods to subvert human political bodies and conquer humanity without open conflict and famously armed the muton species before conquering them by himself.
  • Immune to Mind Control: Due to the psychic scars created by the Trial of the Battlemasters, he can neither use mental psionics nor be affected by them. This also prevents him from having a Battle Aura like other Ethereals.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He moves extremely fast for a regular human, let alone someone his size. Add in his physical strength, his telekinesis and his greatsword, and fighting him soon becomes a nearly impossible prospect.
  • Mind over Matter: His main (and only) psionic ability, which he uses to great effect in battle by launching his greatsword or his enemies at great speeds, for example.
  • One-Man Army: Far more than most ethereals, the Battlemaster is dangerous even without his psionics and is almost invincible against conventional arms due to his armor, which is made of Dead World metal.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: As the supreme commander of the Collective's unified military forces, he is also its most implacable fighter.
  • Villain Respect: Increasingly exhibits this towards humanity for the fervor of their resistance, as well as tricking and nearly killing him numerous times.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Many ethereals hold to this principle due to their low birth rate, but the Battlemaster in particular enforces it zealously. He finds the human treatment of orphans repulsively cruel, bars Collective forces from targeting children, and the Creator's use of children in her experiments (as well as their fate within Paradise itself) plays a significant role in his decision to execute her.
    Quisilia

Quisilia

The Collective's chief spymaster, and an Ethereal with an unusual sense of humor for his species: demonstrating an affinity for human social media early on, he positions himself as a prominent internet personality, becoming one of the most well-known Ethereals to humanity.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: Yes, he is an Ethereal with a tendency to post memes on Twitter and other social media, but he is still one of the Imperator's most trusted Ethereals: he oversees the Collective's intelligence efforts via the Zararch, he's powerful enough to beat a Sovereign One avatar in battle, and he's one of the few Ethereals who's successfully fought his way inside a Synthesized ship, destroying it in the process. Underestimate him at your peril.
  • The Nicknamer: Is responsible for a respectable number of titles and nicknames among the Ethereals, such as "Dread Lord" for Isomnum and "Little Storm" for Caelior.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: His shitposting sprees across social media deliberatly invoke this, as he reveals to the Zar'Chon.
  • Perception Filter: Quisilia is capable of erasing the perception of himself from the people he encounters, effectively making himself invisible. This ability doesn't work on recording devices such as cameras; however, Aegis notes he is aware of it, and is most likely taking precautions to avoid being spotted anyway.
  • The Spymaster: Fills this role for the Collective, being in control of the Zararch and having a hand in the Andromedons' Special Operator program.
    The Ravaged One

The Ravaged One

Overseer of the Collective's early operations on Earth. Warped and wounded by his actions during the Synthesized War, the Ravaged One developed a certain focus on pain and suffering, considering it the primary crucible that drives all life forward.

  • Battle Aura: Causes the affected to re-experience all pain they have ever suffered simultaneously.
  • Benevolent Boss: Surprisingly so, if Hades Contingency's epilogue is any indication; though downplayed, he is fairly cordial to the Zar'Chon, and when his debriefing is concluded, he promptly looks for an area that is as far away from the Observation Station's personnel as possible, so as to spare them from the effect of his aura.
  • I'm Having Soul Pains: Experiences this constantly since the Synthesized War, which he has come to consider a form of enlightenment.
  • Hero Killer: Wipes out almost a third of XCOM, including Bradford and Van Doorn, during the assault on the Citadel.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: XCOM killing him changes the context of the war from experimental to an invasion. As Aegis makes clear, the Ethereals would never have sacrificed one of their very few surviving members to test aliens, even one as broken as the Ravaged One.
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: Actually one of the weakest Ethereals due to his tormented nature, which becomes a sobering moment for XCOM with how much damage he inflicted on them.
  • Tragic Monster: Was once a compassionate member of the Overminds, who took on the pain of his captured comrades to spare them torture by the Synthesized, and was turned into the Ravaged One.
    First Guardian

The First Guardian of the Collective

Once the First Guardian to the Grandmaster of the Empire's Battlemasters, the First Guardian is a warrior first and foremost, only surpassed by the Battlemaster himself. Having been numbed by the horrors of the Synthesized, he accepted the Imperator's offer solely for the sake of revenge against the mechanized fleets.
    Second Guardian

The Second Guardian of the Collective

During the days of the Empire, the Ethereal now known as the Second Guardian was once the Twelfth Guardian of the Imperial Sanctum, and bonded to one of its Battlemasters. The Synthesized's invasion took everything from her, leading her to fight against the machine fleets in every possible front until the day when she was offered a chance to rebuild. With nothing left, she joined the Collective, serving directly under the Imperator.

  • Crusading Widow: The Synthesized killed the Battlemasters of the Imperial Sanctum, of which one was her mate. Her motivation to join the Collective stems from the opportunity to avenge him through the death of all Synthesized.
    Caelior

Caelior, Destroyer of the Immortals

An abnormally talented telekine with an ego, Caelior was one of the Ethereal Empire's most renowned heroes of the war against the Synthesized; however, his victories conceal a secret even he is unaware of: most of his victories were arranged by the Empire itself, which helped feed his ego by sending him against forces that they knew were well within his capability to put down, in order to build up his legend.

  • Badass on Paper: Downplayed; while most of his well-known exploits were arranged by the Empire behind his back, when he ended up facing a Synthesized fleet twice the size of his own, he scored a genuine victory. His potential is even acknowledged by the Imperator, who recruited him for that exact reason.
  • Break the Haughty: Having the truth of his legend revealed to him after being captured by XCOM took him down several notches. It also led to his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After the aforementioned humbling under Break the Haughty, XCOM offered him the opportunity to grow and learn from his previous mistakes, in exchange for cooperation. He accepted, and is now a member of XCOM through and through.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After his Heel–Face Turn and training with XCOM, he's a whole lot kinder and more conversational than he was in the Collective, even coming to regard Dawn as a sister of sorts.
    Sicarius

Sicarius

Basically a child by Ethereal standards, Sicarius was found by the Imperator on an Ethereal planet ravaged by the Synthesized, and was taken into the Collective, where she received help. In addition, she was trained in the arts of stealth and assassination by the Imperator, acting as one of his direct agents.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: Downplayed; she is the youngest Ethereal in the Collective by a long shot, and the Imperator seems to be somewhat protective of her, having once exiled Caelior for openly dismissing her and questioning her utility. Doesn't diminish much the fact that he turned her into one of his personal assassins.
  • Little Miss Badass: By Ethereal standards, she definitely qualifies.
  • Sole Survivor: Of the Synthesized's invasion of her home planet.
  • Tyke Bomb: The Imperator trained her to be one of his personal agents. Downplayed by the fact that he didn't train her from birth, but rather rescued her from the ruins of her home planet.
    Revelean

Revelean

Chief Geneticist of the Collective, and the foremost scientific mind within the Collective.
    Fectorian

Fectorian

Chief engineer among the Ethereals of the Collective, Fectorian is the mind behind some of their greatest war machines and mechanical units, from Archons to Spectres. However, he is also a controversial figure among the Ethereals, which has led to him being mostly ignored in favor of Revelean.

  • The Engineer
  • Heel–Face Turn: Of sorts; he views the Imperator's actions surrounding Mosrimor and the Bringer to be counterproductive to the wider Collective, which leads him to reach out to XCOM and especially T'Leth, with Abigail as his emissary.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: He has grown disillusioned with the Ethereals' distinctive sense of superiority after the war with the Synthesized, and much like the Battlemaster, he values alien viewpoints in his line of work; unlike Revelean, he regards the formation of a joint Collective engineering program positively, and when investigating the Battlemaster's impending coup, he relies on Abigail to help him piece everything together.
    • This trope applies doubly in Abigail's case, as she's an AI based on the original Abby (and an AI created by Fectorian himself, at that), and Ethereals are notorious adherents of A.I. Is a Crapshoot in general.
    Cogitian

Cogitian

The Collective's primary archivist, focused on the acquisition and preservation of knowledge on every subject possible.

The Collector: Of knowledge. It is his main job within the Collective, and one prized by the Imperator.
    Nebulan

Nebulan

Formerly an Illusionist under the Empire's Division of Shadows, Nebulan's role in the Collective has comprised mostly of observing the inner galaxy, until the Collective's efforts on Earth demanded her services there.
    Macula

Macula

Once a highly-regarded agent within the Division of Shadows, Macula pioneered research into new psionic techniques during the war against the Synthesized. Now, he serves as a monitor for species both within the Collective and through the inner galaxy, while commanding a personal army of his own.

As the war on Earth intensifies, he is sent to contact the dissident Sovereign African States, providing them with assistance on behalf of the Collective while simultaneously using them as a means to establish a stronger Collective presence on Earth itself.

  • Manipulative Bastard: He has orchestrated the downfall of several alien powers who could pose a threat to the old Empire. Those skills have not diminished during his time with the Collective.
    Sana'Ligna

Sana'Ligna, the Healer

    Mortis'Ligna

Mortis'Ligna, the Dead Ethereal

    Isomnum

Isomnum, the Dread Lord

Once a member of the Empire's Overminds, Isomnum acquired a reputation for his obsession with toying with his victims' fears and breaking their minds. His acts during the Synthesized war resulted in him being hand-picked by the Imperator in the event of a future conflict against the mechanical abominations.

  • And I Must Scream: His last few moments before his death became this, courtesy of T'Leth.
  • The Dreaded: Oh, definitely. When you're one of the only Ethereals capable of making the armies of the Synthesized themselves run away, you more than qualify.
  • Hated by All: According to Aegis, this is very much the case. Looking into his life before the Synthesized war perfectly shows why: anyone who talked with him was left on the brink of mental trauma, and even in his youth he'd experiment on animals, inducing heart attacks and insanity. Absolutely no one mourns his death; in fact, even among the Collective there was a morale boost when word of his death spread.
  • Killed Off for Real: Kane beats his head to a pulp in Beijing, while T'Leth... works on his mind.
  • Red Baron: "The Dread Lord", based on an homonymous boogeyman told of in old Ethereal stories. This title was bestowed upon him by Quisilia.
  • Sadist: Oh, very much so. He will gladly admit that he enjoys toying with his victims and exposing them to their worst fears until they break.
  • Supernatural Fear Inducer: The general effect of his Battle Aura.
  • Telepathy: As one of the Ethereal Overminds before the Synthesized war, this is his area of psionic expertise. Among his abilities is a more active version of his Battle Aura, capable of making his victims live their worst fears.
    The Creator

Amareoux, the Creator

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: As a result of residing so close to the Dead World (and, by extension, the Bringer, she went from what appears to be a relatively pleasant (if arrogant) Ethereal scientist to a madwoman who has performed horrifying experiments of all kinds in service to a psionic abomination with a god-complex.
    Deusian

Deusian, Exarch of the Collective

The last of the Reapers; Ethereals engineered with enough psionic power to destroy entire worlds in one sweep, and an exceptionally reclusive figure within the Collective.

    Regisora

Regisora, the Voice of the Sovereign

See the Sovereigns page for more details.

The Chosen

    Organization Tropes

The Chosen

Among the results of the Creator's experiments, the three agents known as the Chosen are regularly used by the Collective in their invasion of Earth.

    Senorium

Senorium, Fist of the Creator and Warlock of the Elders

The first one of the Chosen to appear, the Warlock is an immensely skilled psion and unfailingly loyal to the Ethereals, particularly to the Creator.

  • The Bus Came Back: After being absent for dozens of chapters, he returns in Chapter 67, albeit... changed.
  • Knight Templar: The zealotry with which he shows devotion to Paradise and the Creator is evident with every time he opens his mouth, and he is absolutely certain he is on the side of right.
    Venadiar

Venadiar, Hunter of the Creator and Watcher of the Elders

The second of the Chosen to be introduced, the Hunter is a psychopathic, foul-mouthed sniper who bears a strong hatred for anything related to the Creator and Paradise, including his own Chosen siblings.

  • Ax-Crazy: How better to define someone who casually shoots both allied and enemy soldiers in the middle of a battle, just because he's bored?
  • Blood Knight: The card-carrying kind, at that. He makes no secret of the fact that he just wants to kill things.
  • Break Them by Talking: An inevitable effect of talking too long to the Hunter without psionic protection. Notably enough, he has no control over this particular ability.
  • Friendly Sniper: "Friendly" is one hell of a stretch to make, but he's not averse to bantering with the very people he's killing on the battlefield.
  • Token Good Teammate: He is this to the Chosen, to such an extent that he turns on them and Paradise, placing himself under the Battlemaster's direct command. Calling him "good" is as major a stretch as "friendly", though.
    Occidera

Occidera, Nightmaiden of the Creator and Assassin of the Elders

Third and last of the Chosen to be introduced, the Assassin is a blademistress in service to the Creator and the Collective, and a significantly more professional presence than her brothers.

  • Came Back Wrong: Like the Warlock, she was due to be enhanced. Then the Fourth's vines set in.
  • Enemy Mine: Forms one with Abby to apprehend the Hunter during the fighting in Busan.
  • Put on a Bus: She hasn't been seen since the Hunter toyed with her in Beijing. That being said, if the Warlock is any indication, she's likely gotten an upgrade. Confirmed as of Chapter 81.

    Hive Commander 029

Hive Commander 029

Considered the closest thing to a diplomat among the Sectoids, 029's uncanny familiarity with aliens stems from his expertise in alien psychology and biology, making him the main representative for the Hive Commanders in any negotiation with the wider Collective.
    Hive Commander 072

Hive Commander 072

The first Hive Commander encountered by XCOM, found directing a Collective base hidden in the Middle East.

Human Elements

The Harbingers

    In General
    Avatar of the Imperator (SPOILERS)

Patricia Trask, Harbinger of the Imperator

During her captivity aboard the Imperator's Temple Ship, the leader of the Collective taught Patricia of the truth behind the Sovereign conflicts that consume the galaxy and the known universe, and revealed his end goal: to grow the Collective into a force capable of matching any Sovereign and win, in order to rid the universe of them. In pursuit of this goal, he saw potential in humanity, and offered Patricia the opportunity to enter the Avatar Project, turning her into the Imperator's own emissary and granting her access to his knowledge of psionics.

She accepted the offer.

Her tropes can be seen here.

    Yang Shuren

Yang Shuren, Harbinger of the Battlemaster

    Ivan Smirnov

Ivan Smirnov, Harbinger of the Overmind

Formerly a criminal defense lawyer, Ivan Smirnov was handpicked by the Overmind to be his Avatar after being rejected a position within ADVENT's PRIEST Division. This soon proves to be a choice that utterly baffles anyone who meets the man.

  • Butt-Monkey: You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who takes him seriously. Not even the Overmind paid his death much mind.
    Nico Murillo

Nico Murillo, Harbinger of Sicarius

A Mexican youth who willingly joined the Collective after ADVENT led to the demise of his family. Currently working alongside the Ethereal Sicarius as her Avatar.
    Sonoda Ikuko

Sonoda Ikuko, Harbinger of Isomnum

A disgraced Japanese psychologist who was caught experimenting on her patients without their consent. Her outlook and methodology proved themselves a natural fit for an Avatar of Isomnum.
    The Mori Twins

Sabrina and Micaiah Mori, Harbingers of Quisilia

Twin sisters recruited by Quisilia to act in his stead as Avatars, Sabrina and Micaiah are a remarkable contrast from virtually every other Avatar, sharing their Ethereal overseer's tendency to indulge in social media and internet memes.

  • Establishing Character Moment: They're introduced roping the Zar'Chon into acting out a scene from a Star Wars movie, before going off on a slang-laden speech about memes being the future of war and propaganda. There could not be a more effective way of introducing an Avatar for Quisilia, let alone two.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: They can give Ivan a run for his money in this regard: the Zar'Chon hates them enough that he feels tempted to have them killed off mid-mission, Yang goes the same way after hearing their takes on the Battle of Beijing, and Patricia ends up having to discipline them by force to get them to act properly. The only one who appears to like them is Quisilia himself.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Their slang-heavy tirade mentioned above? It's an act. They deliberately prefer cultivating an image of internet-addicted dimwits to throw everyone else off.
  • Oh, Crap!: They have a massive one upon realizing that the Chronicler has entered Seoul to fend off the Collective.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The two of them are certainly prone to this. Choosing to fight off a Chronicler decked in Seraphim armor did not end well for Micaiah in particular.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Not exactly "torture", but Patricia telekinetically chokes the two of them when they interact, for not paying attention to her briefing of their upcoming operation in Seoul. Micaiah is... not quite displeased. It's never stated whether or not that was an act on her part.
  • Troll: They're Quisilia's Avatars. It would be more surprising if they weren't this.
    Artur Paz Dutra

Artuz Paz Dutra, Harbinger of the Exarch

A biologist selected by Deusian to be her Avatar.

  • The Ghost: Besides a short appearance in Deusian's XCOM Files chapter, there has been no word on his activities. Chapter 35 of New Blood puts an end to this, revealing he's active in Africa.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: It's implied he may not necessarily bear ADVENT any ill will, unlike the rest of the Avatars.
    Tyres Skoglund

Tyres Skoglund, Harbinger of Macula

Ex-Swedish special forces and boxing instructor, Tyres switched sides after ADVENT's annexation of his country, eventually finding himself among the ranks of the Collective. There, he was assigned to Macula, who trained him in ways more akin to the Battlemasters than his own.

  • Affably Evil: An incredibly well-spoken and conversational man. Be it towards Betos or XCOM/ADVENT soldiers.
  • The Brute: He is this among the Harbingers, in virtue of both his hulking shape and his Harbinger training. Dumb Muscle, however, is unambiguously averted.
  • Combat Pragmatist: When discussing a way to eliminate Admiral Grady with Betos, the first idea he brings is to just aim the Reinarm Cannon at his ship; even if Grady and his crew were to somehow escape the blast, they'd be disoriented enough that he could lead a strike against their ship and take them off the board.
  • Mind over Matter: His main observed psionic specialty appears to be telekinesis.
  • Villainous Rescue: Pulls one on the Collective-aligned Turkish president in Chapter 71, from ADVENT and the Lion.

Konstantine Volikov

An anti-authoritarian assassin, Volk opposed ADVENT since the day of its formation, seeing it as a greater evil than the Ethereal Collective. He soon allied himself with them when offered the chance.
