Gabriel Roman

Played By: Simon Templeman (English), Boris Repetur (Russian)
You two should realise by now that I plan for every contingency.

A crimelord, loan shark and amateur treasure hunter, Roman loaned a large sum of money to Sully before the events of Drake's Fortune and attempts to collect by trailing Nate and attempting to snatch El Dorado before anyone else can.

  • Abusive Parents: Like Sully, he took in Navarro and raised him. On the other hand, it's said he treated him with contempt and viewed him as expendable. Unsurprisingly, unlike Nate, Navarro would grow to have no loyalty to Roman and tricks him into his death.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: While all of the henchmen you fight throughout the game are on his payroll, Navarro and his men reveal they were playing him the entire time at the climax. He was also completely clueless about the curse of El Dorado until he found himself on the wrong end of it.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Navarro kills him with a single shot to the forehead after he gets infected.
  • Death by Irony: Right as he finds El Dorado, he has Drake, Elena and Sully at gunpoint, claiming that he plans for every contingency. Then Navarro talks him into opening the statue, and he realizes he didn't quite plan on being betrayed by the very people working for him. Tellingly, none of the Mooks even bat an eye at his demise; they were all in on it.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Lampshades this in a very black way when threatening to shoot Nate as a warning to Sully not to screw with him again.
Nate: Come on! Don't you guys usually cut off a finger or something?
Roman: Oh no, that's far too vulgar.
  • Evil Brit: The only white guy on the villain team, and he speaks with an upper-class English accent.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Sully. Both are old Silver Fox types with criminal dealings and are seeking out a lost treasure, and both found a younger protege at some point in their lives whom they took in as a partner in crime. The difference is that Roman considered Navarro disposable and treated him with a lot of contempt, which ended up biting him in the ass.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Initially holds Drake and Sully at gunpoint and politely reveals how Sully's promise that he was "on to something" resulted in him bringing his own crew to the scene. And then he attempts to murder Sully, showing what a cold-blooded bastard he is.
  • Loan Shark: The hunt for El Dorado would've gone a lot more smoothly if Sully hadn't owed Roman a little money...
  • Smug Snake: Believes he's smarter than everyone and loves to gloat whenever he's upstaged Nate. Then it turns out his protege was planning to dick him over the entire time and he never sees it coming.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: He rarely ever raises his voice even when he's doing diabolical antics.
  • The Unfought: He is never fought by the player, since he gets exposed to The Virus inside El Dorado and shot in the head by Navarro.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Navarro knows more about El Dorado than anyone in the game and has been playing Roman like a fiddle. Once they find the the treasure, Navarro uses Roman as a test subject for the virus inside the sarcophagus.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: A grey-haired English loan shark who starts off the game's conflict by tracking down Sully to collect on his unpaid debts.
  • You Get What You Pay For: Says this trope word for word in regards to Eddy Raja.
Roman: Remind me why we hired that superstitious idiot.
    Navarro: You wanted someone cheap.
Roman: Ah. Well, you get what you pay for, I suppose.

    Atoq Navarro (UNMARKED SPOILERS

Atoq Navarro

Played By: Robin Atkin Downes (English), Nikita Prozorovsky (Russian)
I'm the only person on this island who knows what the hell he's doing!

The leader of a mercenary group and the most knowledgeable and professional treasure hunter in Drake's Fortune (save Nate himself), Navarro works for Roman as his main lieutenant.

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: The evil kind, in it entirely for the money and with no scruples whatsoever.
  • Beard of Evil: Navarro has a small beard, in contrast to his clean-shaven boss. He ultimately proves to Roman that he's Eviler than Thou.
  • Big Bad: Navarro is just using Roman's resources to get to El Dorado and effortlessly offs him once he is no longer needed, revealing himself as the main antagonist.
  • Disney Villain Death: Hauled into the depths of the ocean by El Dorado after snagging his ankle on the rope attached to its net.
  • Dragon Ascendant: Navarro is working for Roman for most of the game. However, he betrays the latter and convinces him to open El Dorado, exposing him to the deadly virus inside it.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Drake. Both are rag-tag adventurers hell-bent on getting the treasure of El Dorado, and as Drake's Deception reveals, both used to be in the slums before being discovered by an older criminal who took them in as their protege, although Roman treats him as an entirely disposable asset and with some serious contempt. Because of this he doesn't have Drake's Undying Loyalty, which backfires on Roman big-time.
  • Eviler than Thou: Gabriel Roman is a smug, smarmy cold-blooded loan-shark who's all-too-willing to resort to murder and blackmail to get the legendary golden statue that is El-Dorado. And Navarro knows fully well that the statue is in fact horribly cursed, which gives him a mighty convenient opportunity to eliminate his boss and make a killing by weaponizing it.
  • Final Boss: The final battle of Drake's Fortune consists of killing waves upon waves of Mooks while avoiding Navarro's shots. Once the latter is cornered, a fist fight ensues, with Drake emerging victorious.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: Nate chases him across his ship, shooting through lines of mooks, before Navarro finally turns and fights.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: When giving orders to his men, who are also presumably Peruvians.
  • Hidden Depths: Navarro figures out the true nature of El Dorado way ahead of anyone else in the main cast, hero or villain, and plays them all like a fiddle until The Reveal.
  • Karmic Death: He wants that big gold statue so bad and gets it. Literally, as it is tied to his ankle and sent sinking into the ocean.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: He's perfectly willing to play the Dumb Muscle and seem like a servile idiot who'd be nowhere without Roman's guidance. All to hide the fact that he's the one really pulling the strings.
  • Oh, Crap!: In the final chapter, Navarro panics when he sees that his falling helicopter is going to pull El Dorado into the ocean depths- and, since his ankle is snared in the securing rope, the helicopter will take him with it.
  • Only in It for the Money: What's El Dorado? An Artifact of Doom. The gold is plenty valuable, but the pathogen inside is what he's really after; he believes it's even more valuable as a bioweapon.
  • The Reveal: Not only did Navarro intend on screwing over his supposed boss, he knew of El Dorado's curse the entire time, and was pursuing the "treasure" for that very reason.
  • The Starscream: Navarro had been using Roman for the entire game to secure El Dorado for himself. Once the coffin is in his possession, he tricks his boss into opening it, thus getting rid of him.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He pulls this on Roman — the supposed main antagonist — at the end of Drake's Fortune, tricking him into opening El Dorado and getting a faceful of its lethal contents.

    Eddy Raja

Eddy Raja

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Uncharted_-_Eddy_7969.jpg

Played By: James Sie (English), Dmitry Filimonov (Russian)
That's right you, ugly konyok! Don't mess with Eddy Raja!

The head of a group of pirates who go after Nate and Elena at the beginning of Drake's Fortune and later works for Roman and Navarro as hired muscle. He's superstitious and believes in the curse of the island.

  • Affably Evil: He's a loud-mouthed, none-too-bright jerk whose willingness to fire off at the slightest provocation pretty much explains why Drake doesn't like him. However he means no real malice, and when his men start dying mysteriously, he'd rather give up than throw away more of their lives chasing treasure.
  • Asian Rudeness: Heavily-prone to cursing in Bahasa Indonesian, and none too happy to be spending time with Nathan Drake. Or Roman and Navarro, either. Or basically, anyone.
  • Ax-Crazy: Subverted; when he accuses both Nate and Elena of being involved in a conspiracy to set him up, and then shoots the windshield of their car, she's convinced he's crazy. He also rants about how the island is cursed, but it later turns out he's Properly Paranoid and actually is getting screwed out of his share by Roman. And the island is cursed.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: He and Nate fight the Descendants like this briefly.
  • Bling-Bling-BANG!: He owns a golden Desert Eagle.
  • Catchphrase: "Tai kamu!"note
  • Disney Villain Death: A Descendant hauls him over the edge of the platform he's standing on to their mutual deaths, despite Nate's attempts to save him.
  • Dying Declaration of Hate: He delivers this to Nate shortly before engaging in a fight with the Descendants that ends with them tackling him to his death.
  • Enemy Mine: He and Nate really, really dislike each other, but when backed up against the wall by the Descendants, they don't waste any time arguing.
  • A Father to His Men: Eddy's concern for his pirate subordinates is a redeeming quality for the abrasive pirate, as he makes clear to Nate early on.
Eddy: Listen, maggot... I was promised treasure on this goddamn rock! And now my men are dying! They can't even go outside to take a piss without an armed guard, and I have nothing to show for it!
  • Foreign Cuss Word: He openly describes a Descendant as an "ugly konyok".
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: He is killed only minutes after teaming up with Nate to take down the Descendants.
  • Hot-Blooded: He loses his temper in virtually every scene in which he appears. Granted, he often has good reason to get angry: at one point, he's convinced Roman is screwing him out of his share of the gold, right after pointing out to Roman that his men are getting killed by something on the island for that gold.
  • It Has Been an Honor: Subverted in his last line of dialogue with Nate before their fight with the Descendants.
Eddy: Drake, if we don't make it out of here, I just want you to know...I hate your guts!
Nate: Likewise pal. Now let's do this!
  • Properly Paranoid: Eddy is already falling apart even before Nate arrives on the island and begins shooting his men, convinced that Roman is planning to cut him out of the deal — that Roman hired Nate to replace him, in fact — and that there's something besides Drake hunting them. Except for Nate being involved, he's absolutely correct; Roman dismisses him without payment for lack of results, and the Descendants are killing his pirates left and right.
  • The Rival: Intensely competitive with Nate whenever they meet.
  • Ruthless Modern Pirates: Sort of. He's belligerent, and willing to shoot Nate and Elena, but ultimately Navarro and the Descendants are a lot more brutal than Eddy.
  • Spiteful Spit: Towards Navarro right before Roman orders him to leave the library, after they were getting terse with one another and Navarro pulled a gun on him. He also insults Navarro in Bahasa before he leaves.
  • Tempting Fate: Eddy vows to capture Elena, saying "How much trouble can one girl be?!" At that moment, Elena knocks down the wall of Drake's cell with a jeep, allowing him to escape.

    Sir Francis Drake

Sir Francis Drake

There must be a beginning of any great matter, but the continuing unto the end until it be thoroughly finished yields the true glory.

A legendary English privateer who lived in the 1500s and was particularly feared and hated by the Spanish of the time. He's particularly well-renowned for commanding the English Royal Navy to victory over the Spanish Armada. He supposedly died in 1596, but Nathan Drake (his supposed descendant) finds evidence that Francis faked his death instead.

  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: A member of what would become Marlowe's Hermetic Order.
  • Faking the Dead: According to the game, Sir Francis faked his death in 1596 in order to pursue El Dorado without Queen Elizabeth finding out what he was doing.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Destroyed the Spanish and English ships to prevent El Dorado from leaving the island, trapping himself with the Descendants and condemning himself to death.
  • Historical Domain Character: Francis Drake was a real person, during the time of Elizabeth I.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: He's generally invoked as an overarching Big Good, an explorer who wanted to ensure that powerful artifacts stayed out of people's hands. The real Francis Drake was an ambitious sailor, an early English innovator in the slave trade, a collaborator in the Rathlin Island Massacre of 600 men, women and children, and generally helped Elizabeth by participating in illegal raids against the Spanish Fleet, which were essentially piracy legalized by the Crown.
  • Posthumous Character: He's long dead by the time Drake's Fortune begins.
  • Privateer: He worked as one for the British Crown.

    The Descendants

The Descendants

Sully: Jesus, what are those things?
Nate: It's the Spaniards, Sully. They never left.

Deep within the island catacombs, both Nate and Romans’ groups discover a nightmare that was born from El Dorado itself. These zombie-like creatures were formerly the Spanish colonists of the island who were infected from a virus within a mummy inside El Dorado. The infection quickly turns any human being into a violent, feral creature with a taste for human flesh. The ones Nate encounters are the descendants of the Spanish colonists, with 500 years of inbreeding turning them less and less human. Horrified of this discovery, Sir Francis Drake destroyed all ships to prevent the infection from escaping the island.

  • Artistic License – Biology: The El Dorado virus' incubation period lasts for about thirty seconds, when most real life virus infections require at least 24 hours to produce the first symptoms.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: The infected have black sclera and are murderously aggressive towards everyone who is not one of them.
  • Body Horror: The first sign of mutation caused by the virus is the victim's eyes turning black. After 500 years of inbreeding, the Descendants further mutate, with their skin becoming pale, their fingers becoming longer and most of their toes have fused together into two toes.
  • It Can Think: Despite their feral nature, the Descendants are cunning enough to make spike traps that quickly and efficiently mow down their enemies.
  • Kung Fu-Proof Mook: While they can be shot with guns like any other enemy, Drake cannot hurt them with melee attacks since they'll dodge and retaliate with a powerful counter swipe.
  • Man Bites Man: The Descendants are feral mutated humans who won't hesitate to take bites out of their enemies. The one that kills Eddy Raja is seen sinking his teeth into the victim's neck before dragging him into the abyss.
  • Not Using the "Z" Word: Subverted. They aren't given a name in the game but Nate refers to them as zombie in the sequel.
  • To Serve Man: As a result of their mutation, these creatures develop a taste for human flesh.
  • The Speechless: All they do is growl and hiss a lot.
  • Was Once a Man: The Descendants are a result of a human being infected by an unknown virus from within El Dorado.
  • Walking Spoiler: They are not encountered until near the end of the game, and their existence spoils the true nature of the treasure the main characters are after.
  • Zerg Rush: These creatures attack their prey in large number from all sides.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: This would be the case if the virus ever leaves the island which is why Francis Drake had to all the ships on the island.
