A transgender girl, and the only girl at Xavier's School for Juvenile Sorcerors, Olive is the main character of the comic.
  • A-Cup Angst: Early on in her transition, Olive feels self-conscious due to still being flat-chested. She gets over this after being bullied by some jerks.
  • Always Identical Twins: With Owen.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Subverted in that Olive is technically the older sibling. While the two are twins, Owen more often than not acts as Olive's big brother, and she has no problem teasing him for his obvious crush on a classmate.
  • Cuddle Bug: Is extremely physically affectionate with her friends, often giving hugs and kisses.
  • Custom Uniform: Gains one in Sid's introductory comic, designed to let her breathe more easily and be more gender-affirming.
  • Dude Magnet: Being the only girl at an all-boys school, this was bound to happen, but even outside of her school, such as at the beach, boys find her highly attractive.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: She starts wearing skirts and stylish outfits quite soon after coming out, refuses to be seen in public without makeup, and fawns over cute things like griffins and frilly bras. She's also proficient in sword use, boxes to relieve stress, and hangs out with mostly boys. (Though that last part is less of an active choice and more due to circumstances caused by the premise)
  • Half-Identical Twins: With her brother, Owen. Justified as Olive is trans.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: As a young trans girl still struggling to find her place, this is to be expected. Olive wants to succeed at traditionally "girly" things, and if she can't immediately succeed at something she takes it as a failure of womanhood. She also refuses to leave the house without at least putting on some foundation.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite overall being a sweet girl, Olive has no problem getting violent, and is training in Arcane Combat.
  • Ironic Fear: Olive is afraid of heights but the irony is in how it came about. She once tried to save a griffin that seemed stuck in a tree, but ended up unable to climb down herself. Due to being rather young at the time, it didn't occur to her that griffins can fly.
  • Irony: She's surprisingly adept at fixing other people's romantic relationships, but is utterly oblivious to Gigi's obvious crush on her. This is invoked again in the 2023 Valentine's comic when she takes it upon herself to have a purposefully Bad Date with a popular boy in her class to drive him towards Owen. This proves unnecessary as the boy actually asked Olive out to get advice on wooing Owen making her efforts futile while still securing the end goal of her brother going out with him.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Thinks that griffins (in this verse a mix between domestic cats and small birds) are absolutely adorable, and protects one being bullied by some others. She later adopts the griffin (named Cyan).
  • Mentor In Transness: To Joe.
  • Nice Girl: One of the sweetest in the comic. She befriends the asocial Sid, adopts a small griffin as a pet, and helps a young boy come out as trans to his parents.
  • Oblivious to Love: Wasn't able to tell that Gigi was in love with her as a little girl, and is just as oblivious in the present despite Gigi being a Clingy Jealous Girl. She eventually learns about Gigi's crush on her on Valentine's Day, but gently turns her down.
  • Ship Tease: With both Sid and Gigi. She's the first person to befriend Sid, is extremely affectionate with him, and at one point falls asleep on him. Gigi, meanwhile, is incredibly affectionate with Olive, and Olive dotes on her old friend constantly.
  • Transparent Closet: Before she came out as a girl, her brother and parents could all tell and did their best to accommodate her, even going so far as to make a dress for her for Christmas.

    Owen Atwood
Olive's twin brother, and her biggest supporter.
  • Always Identical Twins: With Olive.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With a classmate, which gets him teased by his mother and sister.
  • Berserk Button: Don't insult Olive. Ever. One classmate he was previously flirting with was transphobic towards her, and he immediately slammed the guy through the floor.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's actually younger than Olive, but his most defining characteristic is his love for his sister. It doesn't matter who you are, how old you are, or where you are. Don't mess with Olive.
  • Half-Identical Twins: With his sister, Olive. Justified as Olive is trans.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Agrees to fake-date Itsuki to make Lyndon jealous for some dango.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Both he and Olive are fond of combat, though Owen is quicker to violence outside of sparring sessions.
  • Sweet Tooth: Itsuki was able to sway him with Japanese sweets and he's seen lamenting about the lack of chocolate he was given on Valentine's Day compared to his sister. Olive also tries to comfort him with cookies after accidentally scaring him on Halloween.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Threw a starfish at a girl who was bullying his sister, and threatened to throw rocks if they didn't knock it off.

    Obsidian, aka 'Sid' Stone
A potions student, and one of Olive's friends.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Starts off rather abrasive and blunt towards Olive, but once she actually thanks him and brings him into her friend group he reveals his true colors as a sweet dork.
  • A Friend in Need: Was the only person to notice Olive was sick and brought her to the infirmary. He also gave her a prescription for migraine relief pills and commissioned a custom uniform for her so she wouldn't keep losing her breath.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Becomes rather jealous when he notices that his friends are all very touchy with each other, but they don't do the same with him. They reassure him that he only needs to ask, and the only reason they weren't like that before was that they thought he would be touch-averse.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: While he starts off rude and condescending towards Olive and Owen, it's to push them to be more honest with each other, and he ultimately is doing good because it needs to be done. Once he's befriended by Olive, he becomes much friendlier and warmer.
  • Nice Guy: Underneath the image of a brooding Bad Boy, Sid is actually a bit of a sweet dork. He feeds stray griffins, keeps an eye out for Olive, bonds with Gigi over magic, and is generally a sweet kid.
  • Ship Tease: With Olive. He's much more affectionate with her than with anyone else, and escorts her to return Cyan to Gossamer; when she falls asleep on the way home, he carries her home with a smile. She also gives him a kiss on the cheek after he helps fix her heel. note
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: While it doesn't show up much after his introduction, in his first appearance he had no qualms about mocking and criticizing Olive for choosing to keep her health problems a secret, and calls Owen a "bad brother" for not noticing his sister was in pain.
  • Third Eye: Has one on his forehead.
  • Token Nonhuman: The only member of Olive's friend group to have obvious non-human traits (third eye, pointy ears).

    Lyndon
One of Olive's friends, a theatre kid, and in a relationship with Itsuki.

    Itsuki

    Giselle aka 'Gigi' Brisbane
Olive's childhood friend, having moved back with her father after years away. Has a big crush on Olive.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Discussed by Gigi, who had a crush on Olive back before she came out, and the crush came back in full force when she moved back home. She wonders if she was always gay and didn't know, if she's actually bisexual, or if she's just in love with Olive specifically. Her crush remains strong throughout the comic, and she later identifies as lesbian.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Downplayed. Gigi is very friendly and warm towards Olive and her friends, but becomes hostile very quickly towards anyone she thinks is a threat to Olive's affection, whether or not they're actually romantically involved with Olive.
  • Blush Sticker: Has one when she confesses to Olive.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Towards Olive. She kisses her on the cheek to discourage some boys from flirting with her, and becomes intensely jealous after Sid tags along with her and Olive to trick-or-treating.
  • Dude, She's A Lesbian: A variation with Sid. She's initially very hostile towards him because Olive is extremely physically affectionate and she assumes he's into her, but Sid isn't interested in Olive romantically and is just touchstarved.
  • Hidden Depths: Is apparently a streamer, and bonds with Sid on Halloween over her broom.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Wears frilly skirts and dresses, and is unquestionably attracted to Olive.
  • Odd Friendship: With Sid, given just how completely different the two are.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: Is rejected by Olive on Valentine's Day because Olive is still working through some stuff and doesn't have time for a relationship. They stay friends though.

Supporting Characters

    Joe
A little boy that Olive inspires to come out as trans.
  • The Bus Came Back: While Joe was initially a one-off character, he reappears in the Halloween episode along with his mother and talks with Olive about how his social transition is going.
  • LGBT Awakening: After meeting Olive and hearing her story, Joe realizes that he's a trans boy and comes out.
  • Meaningful Rename: After he comes out as trans, he chooses the name Joe for himself.

    Gossamer Dusk
An older woman, and Cyan's original owner.
  • Cool Old Lady: Invites Sid and Olive inside for some cookies, is open and honest about her infertility, reassures Olive that her womanhood isn't tied to her ability to bear children, and allows Cyan to go home with Olive.
  • Empty Nest: Now that her son's left, she's taken to owning griffins. When Sid and Olive stop by to visit, she also acts very affectionately towards them, giving them plenty of food and encouraging Olive to take Cyan home.
  • Happily Adopted: Her son, Roman. Shortly after learning she was barren, she found him on her step and decided to take him in as her own. She evidently loves him very much, as she has plenty of pictures of him around the house and even kept the basket he was left in.
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: Wanted children, but was told she was barren. She wasn't bothered by this and Happily Adopted the Doorstop Baby she finds the next night.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: When Olive and Sid first meet her, they're creeped out and try to run. It's only after she brings them into her house that they realize what a kind woman she is.

    Brian and Priscilla Atwood
Olive and Owen's parents.
  • Always Someone Better: How they feel about Craig and Annette, Olive and Owen's uncle and aunt. The two always come by each Christmas with expensive gifts and seem to live perfect lives, and they even bought Olive jewelry before knowing that she was out of the closet.
  • Good Parents: Supported their daughter before she even knew herself that she was trans, and helped her with her transition. When she came home with a griffin, they evidently had no problem adopting Cyan as well. When Olive's aunt and uncle came by to visit on Christmas, they also made sure to give Olive a heads-up in case she wasn't ready to come out to the rest of the family yet. They also tease Owen about his obvious crush on a classmate and dote on their son whenever possible.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Realized their daughter was trans before she came out and did their best to make her feel more comfortable.
  • Politeness Judo: How they got around the headmaster's attempts to bully their daughter back into the closet or out of school. Because he refused to acknowledge Olive as the girl she is, they used his own words against him as an argument for why Olive should be allowed to continue at Xavier's for another year.

    School Staff
The staff of Xavier's School for Juvenile Sorcerers. So far we've seen Olive's teacher, Mrs. Valiance, and her unnamed headmaster.
  • Adults Are Useless: Worse than useless. The headmaster fully expected his students to bully Olive back into the closet, and Mrs. Valiance thought that second-graders were too stupid to grasp a simple concept like being Transgender.
  • Cisnormative Crusadernote : The headmaster is adamant that Olive isn't a girl and seems to want his students to be transphobic enough to force Olive back into the closet.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: The reason Olive's allowed to continue going to an all-boys school in the first place is that the headmaster refuses to respect her identity and sees her as a boy going through a phase. Olive was also given a script when some children visited so that the staff wouldn't have to explain what being transgender was. This aspect has seen less focus as the comic continued.
  • Stern Teacher: Mrs. Valiance. While she isn't as virulently transphobic as the headmaster is, and in more recent comics refers to Olive with the correct pronouns and name, she's still strict with her students and gets on their cases for not wearing their uniforms properly. In the Bad Apples comic, she tugs the ear of a student who stole a bottle of alcoholic cider and announces her intent to request expulsion for the student who drank it.
     Almandine "Mandy" Stone
Sid's mother and owner of the Stone family apothecary.
  • Genius Ditz: Shows hints of this in a Patreon exclusive comic when it's revealed the ice cubes she put in Olive's sobering potion were actually made of frozen enhancing tonic which sped up the effects. Even her son who thought she was diluting it, is amazed by her ingenuity.

  • Glamorous Single Mother: Glamorous is a bit of a stretch, but Mandy is rather bubbly and cheerful despite having been a teen mom who was abandoned by her boyfriend and even her own mother. She seems to be a pretty successful business owner despite her obvious lack of skill and safety regarding potions even if this is only due to her looks and Sid's intervention.

  • Of Corsets Sexy: Wears a corset and jeans ensemble.

  • Passed-Over Inheritance: This is how Mandy came into possession of the apothecary. It was owned by her mother who disowned her for getting pregnant in high school; but she died before the will could be altered to reflect this.

  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Wacky parent to Sid's serious child. She's airheaded, clumsy, and seems to lack a lot of basic knowledge in potions despite owning an establishment that houses them. Sid, being rather smart for his age, will often assist her with the creation process.
