Main Characters

    Xiao Hei
Voiced by: Shan Xin [credited as Youji Wang] (Chinese), Kana Hanazawa (Japanese), Emi Lo (English)
A small black cat demon who seeks to find a new home after his old one is destroyed and throughout his journey with the other fey's and Wuxian, he grows in strength as well as expanding his worldview.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: His dormant Domain power allows him to create and project a large spirit realm where his powers are limitless and cover a large area. Feng Xi aims to have the power for himself.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: He's noticeably younger than all of the other elfin he meets, and they immediately take it upon themselves to look after him.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Xiao Hei is immediately attached to Feng Xi and his gang mainly because they fed him and offered him a new home despite, as Wuxian pointed out, only knowing them for less than a day. He loses all of his faith and trust in the group, especially Feng Xi after he steals his powers.
  • Becoming the Mask: Despises humans and tries to escape Wuxian while he was under his captivity, but then ends up forming a genuine friendship with him, especially after Feng Xi steals his power.
  • Big Eater: Most scenes of the movie show him eating when he's not doing much else.
  • Broken Pedestal: Once Feng Xi steals his Domain power by force, he loses all respect for him and helps Wuxian fight him in the climax.
  • Cat Boy: He can take on a human form that retains his tail and ears.
  • Character Development: The film serves as one for him as he leans away from the elfin's black and white morality and embraces a more grey outlook towards the world.
  • Character Title: The movie is named after him.
  • Chekhov's Gun: His Hei Xu ball is shown throughout the film. It's only during the climax of the film where Hei Xu was with Wuxian that allows Xiao Hei to switch places with it and helps Wuxian in the climatic battle with Feng Xi.
  • Defiant Captive: Towards Wuxian, although he eventually warms up to him.
  • Disney Death: Seemingly dies after Feng Xi steals his power, but comes back to help Wuxian.
  • Dub Name Change: He's simply called "Hei" in the English dub, while most other characters have their names translated.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: He has the same spiritual affinity for metal as Wuxian and the human teaches him how to manipulate his metal braclets. It takes a few weeks, but Xiao Hei ends up mastering it quickly to Wuxian's surprise.
  • Failure Montage: Due to his initial hatred towards Wuxian, Xiao Hei does everything he can to attack when the human seems the most vulnerable. This leads to a lot of moments of comedy where Wuxian restrains him without batting an eye.
  • Family of Choice: At the end of the movie, instead of staying at the Spirit Guild, he chooses to instead travel with Wuxian as master and disciple, finally seeing the man as his family and home.
  • First-Name Basis: While he gives his full name at the beginning, everyone just calls him Xiao Hei.
  • Home Sweet Home: His main goal at the start of the film is to find a new home for himself.
  • Locked into Strangeness: Towards the climax of the film he gains Mystical White Hair when his Domain ability is stolen from him, and stays white after he learns to control spiritual space.
  • Meaningful Name: His name means "Little Black" and the form he normally takes is a black cat.
  • Mega Neko: While Xiao Hei can transform from humanoid to cat easily, he will sometimes transform into a humongous black cat to fight stronger or bigger opponents.
  • Older Than They Look: He physically looks like a child, but he's likely way older than that. He is eventually revealed to be exactly 10 years old, subverting this.
  • Origins Episode: The movie is a prequel to the animated shorts that show how Xiao Hei mastered his powers and gained white hair.
  • Shapeshifting: Xiao Hei has the ability to shift his forms from a small back cat, to a larger black cat and a human, although his ears and tails still show.
  • Student–Master Team: While he initially hates Wuxian, they slowly form this bond and work together when taking down Feng Xi. At the end of the film when he has the option to live in the Spirit Guild Xiao Hei instead tearfully asks Wuxian if he could travel with him instead as his master.
  • Tsundere: Not in the romantic sense, but he does act like this around Wuxian when he doesn't want to admit that he's become fond of the human.

    Wuxian
Voiced by: Feng Sheng (Chinese), Mamoru Miyano (Japanese), Aleks Le (English)

An executor of the Spirit Guild. He was sent to capture Feng Xi but after an intense battle, takes Xiao Hei under his care to take to the Guild.

  • Baritone of Strength: The English dub changes his pitch from mid-range to a deep bass. Coupled with his incredible fighting skill, it makes him come off as a more intimidating presence.
  • But Now I Must Go: After taking Xiao Hei to the Spirit Guild, Wuxian gently tells him they must part ways since he's not usually welcomed. However, Xiao Hei then cries for Wuxian, calling him master and asking if he could travel alongside him. Wuxian smiles and lets Xiao Hei come along.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He provides this to a lot of his opponents, even seasoned and skilled elfin like Feng Xi. The only way they beat him is by distracting him by putting human lives at risk.
  • The Drifter: When not fulfilling duties for the guild, he usually just wanders around. When Xiao Hei tearfully begs to travel with him at the end of the film, Wuxian asks him if he's alright with the life of drifting around.
  • Dub Name Change: The English dub calls him "Infinity", while the Japanese dub calls him "Mugen".
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: While driving on the road a man mistakes him for a girl and immediately leaves when Wuxian turns his head.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: He can manipulate the metal bindings on his wrists to restrain his opponents or turn into weapons.
  • Foil: To Feng Xi. While the latter believes humans are terrible and don't deserve to take the land that was rightfully theirs, Wuxian simply learns to live amongst them and adapt.
  • Lethal Chef: He's shown multiple times trying to cook when he and Xiao Hei travel, and both of them end up spitting out the meat he cooked with Wuxian wondering if something was wrong with the meat itself. Xiao Hei snarks that he was pretty sure it's not the meat.
  • Mentor Archetype: He serves as this for Xiao Hei, teaching him how to control his powers as well as showing him how spirits can still live in harmony with humans.
  • Not So Above It All: Earlier parts of the film show he's not as stoic as he makes himself out to be. He occasionally dined-and-dashed after he realizes he didn't have money to pay for their meals which Xiao Hei even points out.
  • Older Than They Look: He's been alive likely for centuries, but still looks to be around mid twenties. This is likely due to his cultivation. Word of God confirms that he is 400-500 years old, then confirmed his exact age as 437 on a Weibo post.
  • One-Man Army: He can easily hold his own against Feng Xi's group.
  • Only One Name: He's only referred to as Wuxian, and while he mentions having a family in the past, he never gives his last name or if he even had one to begin with.
  • Papa Wolf: He starts developing this mindset for Xiao Hei as the movie progresses. This leads into his Roaring Rampage of Revenge towards Feng Xi, who stole Xiao Hei's powers and left the young elfin to die.
  • Pocket Dimension: He keeps his original home in a pocket dimension, and eventually some small trinkets of his journey with Xiao Hei.
  • Really 700 Years Old: According to a Weibo post by MTJJ, he's 437 years old.
  • Reverse Arm-Fold: He usually has this pose even when fighting or by default when walking around.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Wuxian angrily goes after Fengxi for the climax of the film out of anger and revenge for him stealing Xiao Hei's powers and leaving the child to possibly die.
  • The Stoic: He rarely emotes which is played both comedically and seriously. The rare times he emotes is when Xiao Hei is in danger.
  • Student–Master Team: He and Xiao Hei become this over the course of the movie and at the end when Xiao Hei refuses to live in the Spirit Guild and instead asks Wuxian, as his master if he could travel with him instead.
  • Token Human: Is the only named human character in the movie.
  • When He Smiles: He absolutely brightens up when he smiles.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: While he can incapacitate anyone quickly, he will not hurt Xiao-Hei as the most he'll do is restrain him with his metal bindings.

Supernatural Creatures

    Feng Xi
Voiced by: Hao Xianghai (Chinese), Takahiro Sakurai (Japanese), Howard Wang (English), Fabio Campos (Brazilian Portuguese)
An elfin that despises humans. He rescues Xiao Hei from a band of hoodlums and gives him a home within his crew. While he might do it out of camaraderie, he actually has another agenda beneath that...
  • Ambition Is Evil: Other elfin have noted that while Feng Xi is more extreme in his hatred of humans, he'd usually never outright hurt another elfin. Throughout the film Feng Xi is shown fighting other elfin and even destroying their homes in battle just to steal their power for the sake of capturing the Domain ability.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: After fighting Xiao Hei and Wuxian and losing, he refuses to be taken back to the Spirit Guild and instead kills himself by growing a sleuth of trees to surround himself with.
  • Big Bad: Is the true antagonist of the film.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He along with the other elfin treat Xiao Hei like a little brother. When they run from Wuxian but have to leave Xiao Hei behind, Feng Xi is visibly hurt over having to make that decision. Alternatively, he could have just been frustrated that he had to leave behind the child who has the power he needs to eradicate all of humanity.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He saves Xiao Hei from harassers and gives him a home in the elfin world, but really he wants his Domain power to further his goal of becoming god. It's worth noting that he does like Xiao Hei and sees a bit of himself in the boy, but he won't let that go above his desires.
  • Cats Are Mean: His true form is a ferocious bipedal cat. While he appears respectable to other elfin as long as their goals don't clash with his, he's aggressive to his opponents and is dead set on turning Longyou into his own personal domain at the expense of the other humans that live there.
  • Dub Name Change: He's called "Storm End" in the English dub.
  • Foil: To Wuxian. While he is an elfin who believes the elfin should rise up and take back the land that was rightfully theirs before humans claimed it, Wuxian is a powerful human who believes there needs to be a balance between humans and elfin. One is surrounded by teammates that trust him and treat him like family, while Wuxian primarily works alone and has a somewhat distant relationship with the Spirit Guild.
    • The way both men treat Xiao Hei also falls into this. Fengxi lets Xiao Hei indulge in food and shelter, but resorts to hurting Xiao Hei when it's clear that the boy won't comply with his demands; Wuxian is stricter and brings Xiao Hei along by force, but doesn't expect Xiao Hei to always agree with him.
  • Found Family: He treats the other elfin he travels with as this.
  • Freudian Excuse: His natural home had humans living in it, which he was fine with at first. However, when human society started becoming industrialized and produced pollution that destroyed his forest, he began hating humans and wanted to create a world that belongs to the elfin, even if it means mass destruction in the human world.
  • Godhood Seeker: With the Domain ability, anyone could have absolute control over a large area, and with enough practice could even expand the area. Feng Xi outright says that the ability could make anyone equivalent to a god, which is what he ultimately seeks to be.
  • Green Thumb: He has the power to manipulate plants, mainly using trees as defense and its roots as weapons.
  • Humans Are Bastards: While he didn't think they were this at first, when they started to advance too fast for his liking and taking too much land, he refuses to see humans as anything but this. His main goal for the entire film is to take Xiao Hei's Domain ability so he can eradicate humans.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: He despises humans for tearing up the natural world and leaving elfin with increasingly fewer places to call home without conforming to human culture. His overall goal makes him the same as those he despised, since using Domain on all of Longyou will kill any human in this spiritual space, deprive many others of their own homes, and makes the world bend to his will.
  • Last Words: "Xiao Hei... I'm sorry".
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has feminine features and has waist length hair.
  • Power Parasite: While he was only able to manipulate wood in the beginning, his true ability is to steal the abilities of other elfins, which is a forbidden practice.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He has a purple color scheme and is an incredibly powerful elfin.
  • Really 700 Years Old: According to Word of God, he's around 200 years old.
  • Redemption Rejection: Rather than redeem himself for causing destruction in the human world by helping out the guild and learn to treat humans as equals, Feng Xi declines and instead commits suicide by turning himself into a giant tree.
  • Shadow Archetype: In the end, he's basically a Xiao Hei who never grew up with a human-accepting influence. Both are feline elfin with a great amount of power, both have lost their homes to human expansion, and both cherish having a home and people to call family. However, Feng Xi's goodwill towards humans ended when industrialization began and he believes that both sides will never be able to coexist as long as they play by human rules; Xiao Hei however got to see the good in humanity by being raised and trained by a human and seeing how kind some can be.
  • Shapeshifting: He also has the ability to shift forms as he took the form a large cat like creature when meeting Xiao Hei.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He steals Xiao Hei's Domain ability, knowing full well Xiao Hei will die soon afterwards if his power isn't returned.

    Feng Xi's gang
Feng Xi's group of elfin that also aim to have a society away from humans. The elfins consist of Luo Zhu, Tian Hu, and Xuhuai, with A'He and Yezi working on the mainland.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Xuhuai loses his left arm during the group's fight with Wuxian. Over time, he manages to grow it back.
  • An Ice Person: Xuhuai conducts ice to fight.
  • Dub Name Change: In the English dub Luo Zhu became "Bamboo", Tian Hu became "Sky Tiger", and Xuhuai became "Void".
  • Everyone Has Standards: While he didn't do anything to stop it, Tian Hu was visibly saddened when Feng Xi was taking away Xiao Hei's powers.
  • Hulk Speak: Tian Hu usually only speaks one word, "Meat".
  • Older Than He Looks: As a general rule all Elfin can be decades older than the humans around them, but Xuhai in particular is the shortest and youngest looking of the crew. In reality, he is the oldest, with Feng Xi being the second oldest as shown in Lanxi Zhen.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: The gang isn't outright malicious, only following Feng Xi's orders. A'he and Yezi are much more reckless, nearly killing a whole train of people during their subway fight with Wuxian. Indeed, when they cameo in the web series, they're all perfectly fine and not disturbing anyone. Luo Zhu in particular is helping out with Luolan's flower shop.
  • The Stoic: Both Tian Hu and Xuhuai don't talk much.
  • Token Good Teammate: Luo Zhu, who welcomes Xiao Hei with open arms and along with Feng Xi regrets leaving Xiao Hei behind to be captured by Wuxian. However, unlike Feng Xi, who befriended Xiao Hei so he can steal his Domain powers to become a god, Luo Zhu genuinely cares for Xiao Hei and was the only one to object to Feng Xi stealing his power, even loudly protesting to Feng Xi stealing Xiao Hei's powers by force and walked away in disgust after the deed was done. Even Xiao Hei seems to feel the same way as he asks Wuxian if Luo Zhu's okay when he was being taken to the Guild.

    The Spirit Guild
An organization that Wuxian works with. Unlike Feng Xi's gang of elfins, they aim to create a society where humans and elfins live as equals.
  • Foil: To Feng Xi's group. Most of them have accepted to either coexist with humans or help them, but live with other spirits in a different location.
  • Memory-Wiping Crew: They do this whenever humans accidentally come across the elfin or are saved by elfin.
  • Precocious Crush: Ruo Shui (or Flow) towards Wuxian.

     Nezha
Voiced by: Shanxin (Chinese), Inori Minase (Japanese), Bruna Nogueira (Brazilian Portuguese)
One of the most powerful elfin in the Spirit Guild. He appears later on to help the guild capture Feng Xi's gang.
  • Advertised Extra: He appears a lot in trailers for the movie, but he's only shown towards the end of the film and isn't even able to participate in the final battle.
  • Badass Adorable: He looks like a cute little kid but can easily curb stomp even the strongest of elfin.
  • Burning with Anger: Played for laughs. When he realizes he can't enter Feng Xi's domain, he soon loses his temper, sets himself ablaze and tries to force his way through to no avail. He eventually burns out and floats back down to the others to wait it out.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He manages to take out Xuhuai, who had defeated all of the other Spirit Guild members sent after him in one hit.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Nezha gets teased by Xiao Hei over this. It's even lampshaded when he mentions that he keeps his Odango so the others can recognize him.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite being a powerful deity that is centuries old, Nezha is still quick to lose his temper.
  • Older Than They Look: Nezha looks like a child but is centuries old.
  • One-Man Army: He was sent by the guild because he was their most powerful fighter and doesn't break a sweat when beating Xuhuai.
  • Perpetual Frowner: In all of his appearances in the movie, he never smiles once.
  • Rings of Death: His iconic weapons of choice.
