Main Characters

     Luo Xiao Hei
Voiced by: Shan Xin
Our hero. A small cat spirit who finds himself living amongst humans and trying to keep its identity as an elfin a secret. He stole the Pearl of Heaven from Laojun's domain before the story starts.
  • Abandoned Pet in a Box: Subverted, as while Xiao Hei had a master in Wuxian, said master was the one who intended for Xiao Hei to finish his quest and both expect to meet up after it is finished. Xiao Bai however thinks he's this and adopts him.
  • Animal Talk: Xiao Hei speaks in short meows, which are then translated below him for the audience to read. Averted in the manhua, where Xiao Hei's thoughts and the thoughts of all animals are always present.
  • The Apprentice: Functionally one to the Spirit Guild Executor Wuxian. Xiao Hei's overall goal, as revealed in the second season, was to become an Executor as well and follow in Wuxian's footsteps.
  • But Now I Must Go: At the end of episode 27 when he has regained his energy and takes his elfin form of a cat boy with white hair, he gives Xiao Bai a smile and tells her he has to go now. Subverted in the following episode, where he makes clear that he needs Xiao Bai and A'Gen on his next journey.
  • Cats Are Magic: There are plenty of non-magical cats in this setting, but the frontmost one is Xiao Hei, who is capable of flight, magical battle, and splitting himself up.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Xiao Bai's naming scheme isn't all that great. The characters that make it up altogether are 小 (small) and 黒 (black), making him "Small Black". Then again, Xiao Bai isn't that much better, being "Small White".
  • Guest Fighter: Appears in Arknights as a 4-star Lord Guard.
  • Happily Adopted: Xiao Hei is initially shy around humans, but grows to be very fond of them, especially Xiao Bai.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Huangshou (a male kitten) is absolutely smitten with him, but Xiao Hei doesn't swing that way and is visibly uncomfortable when the former tries to be affectionate with him.
  • Kid Hero: Elfin are notoriously long-lived, but Xiao Hei is around 10 years old (although he doesn't know the exact day he was born).
  • Mega Neko: He has the ability to turn himself into a stronger, larger cat when he gets serious.
  • Mystical White Hair: His humanoid form, contrast to his true cat form, has short white hair. It used to be black.
  • Never Learned to Read: Despite being street smart and physically proficient, the one thing Xiao Hei can't do is read Chinese. He always has someone else read out his quest scrolls to him.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Most of the time Xiao Hei is content running around, but sometimes he'll pull out his wings whenever he needs to fight a bigger opponent or travel longer distances than usual.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Whether it be in cat form or in humanoid form, Xiao Hei's design just makes him look incredibly adorable.
  • Rule of Three: Xiao Hei has three tasks given to him by Wuxian. When he completes them, Xiao Hei will be considered an Executor like him. He fails the third mission, but he'll be able to take it any time he feels he's ready in the future.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Xiao Hei does a fair bit in-story, but a lot of the action of the first season is driven by A'Gen and people targeting him. They don't actively start going after Xiao Hei until they realize he's not an ordinary cat.
  • Telepathy: He's only able to speak as a cat in his animal form, but he can properly communicate his words to anyone he chooses if he uses telepathy.

     Luo Xiao Bai
Voiced by: Shan Xin
A human girl who adopts Xiao Hei and goes off to the countryside to visit her cousin A'Gen.
  • All-Loving Hero: She loves finding out more on elfin and treats them with kindness.
  • Birds of a Feather: To an extent, she's on Xiao Hei's wavelength. When she names him in episode 1, she pretty much gets it right on the first try, given that supplementary material and the prequel movie confirm that Xiao Hei's always gone by that name.
  • Giver of Lame Names: She's not the most creative namer, that's for sure. She names Xiao Hei similarly to herself, but her next two pets (Bidiu and the Hei Xus) are named after the sounds they make. A'Gen lampshades this early on, saying that she'd probably name a dog "Wan Wan" after its barks.
  • Kid Hero: Xiao Bai reveals she's 10 years old in CAT 11.
  • Like Brother and Sister: With A'Gen.
  • Playing with Fire: She makes her avatar in All Living Things able to manipulate fire once she gets the hang of spiritual cultivation. While she's eventually able to make a large ball of fire, she's not at the point where she can make good use of it.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: There isn't a mean bone in her body. She treats every encounter with curiosity and kindness, and is willing to accept the supernatural the more she learns about it.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: She already knew that A'Gen was not human, but she doesn't care. A'Gen is her gege, and that's all that matters.
  • Tagalong Kid: Because she is the Token Human on all accompanying trips around the magical world, she doesn't get to do much but converse with certain figures and look after Xiao Hei when he's injured. Unfortunately downgrades to The Load while in All Living Things, as while she's not the only non-combatant kid in the main party anymore she's still the weakest member.
  • The Watson: Because she is relatively new to the ways of the mystic arts, characters have to explain a lot to her so she can keep up. She also serves as the vehicle for the audience to learn this information too.

     A'Gen / Xuan Li
Voiced by: Shan Xin
Xiao Bai's cousin who lives in the countryside. While he takes on a human form, he is really an Elfin and tries to keep the peace between elfin kind.
  • An Ice Person: He has the ability to control ice however he wishes.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He initially doesn't tell Xiao Bai about elfin not only because they were secretive, but also because he doesn't want her getting hurt. He also makes sure she's far away from fights when they start to break out.
  • Braids of Action: Has a long black braid going down to his neck. He's also one of the most active fighters on the good guys' side.
  • Deuteragonist: The second most important character on the good guys' side after Xiao Hei, at least in Season 1. Because of him "being" Xuan Li and his knowledge of the magical side of the world, he is usually the one people involve in their plots first.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": He's not totally opposed to it, but he prefers to be known by his human world name A'Gen rather than his true name, Xuan Li.
  • The Dreaded: He is Xuan Li, another one of the Pure Beings, although he is not terribly high ranking. His name at least gets Mu'Si and Tan Jiu to stop fighting him and properly venerate him. That is to say, he makes people think he is. In reality, he and Xuan Li are different people.
  • Elemental Absorption: While on the surface he only limits himself to ice powers, he is capable of absorbing other elements into his system, such as fire.
  • Eye Glasses: Most of the time, A'Gen's coke bottle glasses act as his eyes, and while they don't move much his pupils pretty much act as if they were attached to the lenses. When he gets serious, however, the lenses clear up and reveal his real eyes. Apparently he can also switch this on or off at will.
  • Mr. Exposition: Functions as this, as he has to get Xiao Bai up to speed as much as he can when she joins him on his adventures.
  • Opaque Nerd Glasses: They turn out to be this in CAT 9, rather than the usual cartoony glasses others (like his grandfather) are depicted with.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: He wears large round glasses, and apparently freezes them. He's also quick witted and is good at talking.
  • Spell My Name With An S: The credits officially romanize his name as "Argan", "Argen", "Gen", or "Ken", but fansubs and other sources list him as "A'Gen".

Elfin

     Diting
Voiced by: Zhenji Huang
An elfin who serves Laojun and initially goes after Xiao Hei for stealing the Pearl of Heaven.
  • The Beastmaster: Takes care of three wily hounds, and uses them to sniff out people or attack in his stead. Unfortunately, they're not very good at their job, at least when it comes to Xiao Hei.
  • The Caretaker: In one end credit scene, he looks after Laojun and dusts off his bookshelves.
  • Hidden Depths: When asked why he's at an anime con, he admits he likes it here because doesn't need to disguise himself around humans. He's also surprisingly good at video games.
  • Horned Humanoid: He has two horns sticking out of his head.
  • Not So Above It All:
    • His fight with A'Gen is interrupted by a monster rainstorm. It's not because Diting recognizes how powerful the storm will be—it's simply because he doesn't like the rain.
    • He runs into Xiao Bai and Xiao Hei at an anime con and admits that he finds the place relaxing, even taking photos with expectant guests. At the same convention, he proves to be an exceptional gamer despite playing a game he claims he's "lost several times", and almost singlehandedly beat the opposing team.
  • The Stoic: He hardly emotes, and the rare times he does is usually from the amusement he gets from Xiao Hei's position.
  • Super-Hearing: He can pick up the distance and voices of anything far enough away. Although he fakes it the first time this ability is introduced, he properly demonstrates it later on.

     Laojun
Voiced by: Xiaotan
Also known as Taishang Laojun, one of the Three Pure Beings. An immortal who has made many vows and rewards those who complete them.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Legends talk about his relationship with the fairy Qingning, but he admits that it's just yearning on his end.
  • God's Hands Are Tied: He'd love to come experience the outside world himself, but because he's so swamped in vows and arrangements he cannot leave his spiritual space.
  • Hates Being Alone: He hasn't gone mad, but he admits that he does get incredibly lonely and even gives Xiao Bai one of his earrings that will allow her to visit him when she can.
  • The Omniscient: Although he cannot leave his realm, he has a good idea of what's going on outside of it.
  • Otaku: While holed up in his library, he developed a strong attachment to ACG— Anime, Comics and (Video) Games. His collection especially includes tons of anime merchandise.
  • Quest Giver: Is notorious for making tons of them, but never following through on them until the quester comes to his doorstep. He can't remember all the ones he's made over the centuries, so he keeps track of them in what's now a twelve volume long Book of Vows. A'Gen theorizes that he makes so many of these because he's desperate for visitors to his realm, and Laojun agrees with him.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He looks fairly young (and can look younger, if he so chooses), but has been alive for likely centuries.
  • The Shut-In: When he's introduced, he mentions that he's been shut up in his library for 30 years, planning to stay for 100 due to a promise. He actually can't leave his pavilion since he's not allowed to interfere with external affairs.
  • Sleep-Mode Size: He has an "energy-saving mode" in which he keeps his body in a smaller, childlike size. Oddly enough, he chooses to keep his voice in his natural deep register despite the size, if only to keep up appearances as a venerated god.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Official subs also sometimes refer to him as "Laozi".

    Fenmo
Voiced by: Luo Rufei
A mischievous flower fairy looking for a cure for her friend Qiguo.
    Qiguo
Voiced by: Ding Dang
A Tree spirit.
    Muluo
Voiced by: Teng Xin

    That One Group
All voiced by: Ding Dang

Mu Si and A'Xian

Tan Ju

  • Expendable Clone: Tan Ju can create duplicates of himself and his companions, should the need for confrontation arise. They have all the same abilities as the originals, and because they're made up of the originals' spiritual energy, they can also serve as a Body Backup Drive. They must not be destroyed though, as doing so will rid the original of an amount of accumulated cultivation.

    Dong Dong
Voiced by: Ding Dang
An elfin that can slow down time.

Humans

     The Luo family
Mom voiced by: Kiki
Xiao Bai's mother and father. They appear in the first few episodes, but then leave for their vacation while Xiao Bai stays with A'Gen and his grandfather.
  • Back for the Finale: Despite being absent from the series after CAT 5, they make a very small cameo at the end of the first season when Xiao Bai tries to call them. They can't answer because they're on a rollercoaster.
  • The Faceless: The mother is always seen wearing a face mask, and never seems to take it off. The father is always seen reading a newspaper, but it covers his entire face and he never puts it down.
  • Put on a Bus: Deliberately. They go on vacation starting from CAT 5 and only have limited appearances afterwards. Lampshaded just before they leave, as they and A'Gen's grandfather admit that it's just to cut down on the number of characters to animate.
  • The Voiceless: The father has no speaking lines—instead, what he would say appears on the front of his newspaper.

     Shanxin
Voiced by: Shan Xin
Xiao Bai's close friend who sometimes tags along on the others adventures. In her spare time, she also games.
  • Advertised Extra: She appears on key visuals a lot, but after Xiao Bai goes to the countryside in CAT 5, Shanxin loses a lot of relevance. She gets more appearances in Season 2.
  • Fantastically Indifferent: She takes Xiao Hei being an elfin and the existence of the supernatural in stride. In fact, she tells Xiao Hei that his powers could have made a lot of things easier if he wasn't hiding them all the time.
  • Gamer Chick: She plays plenty of video games and is apparently a pro. She even beat an adult when she was at a con.
  • Girlish Pigtails: While she dresses and looks plenty girly, ultimately she's more of a Tomboy.
  • Prehensile Hair: As a gag sometimes, she is able to use her twintails as extra hands.
  • Running Gag: Whenever Xiao Bai calls her or gets a call from her, she asks where her friend is and she immediately appears outside of the building.
  • Shipper on Deck: She initially tells Huangshou that he and Xiao Hei won't "get any results", but later on she doesn't seem to mind Huangshao continuing to stick by Xiao Hei.
  • The Smart Guy: In All Living Things, she serves as her party's main healer, expert on game mechanics, and quest updater. Unsurprisingly, this is due to her having the most game experience of the four.

     Yunfei
Voiced by: Zhenji Huang
A normal old man who looks after A'Gen and Xiao Bai when she comes over to visit.

    The Jis
Daji voiced by: Zhenji Huang
Little Ji voiced by: Shan Xin
A older and younger brother pair that live near A'Gen. Daji is the competitive one, while Little Ji hangs around him.
  • Catchphrase: "Ill be back!" for Daji.
  • Fat and Skinny: Little Ji is a little portly for his age, but he's a great deal skinnier than his obese older brother.
  • One Sided Rivalry: Daji will never miss an opportunity to compete with A'Gen, even if it's for the silliest reasons. However, he always either loses or finds himself outclassed before he can even work himself up to ask. A'Gen himself sees Daji as more of a nuisance.

     Wuxian
Voiced by: Sheng Feng
The man who instructed Xiao Hei to steal the Pearl of Heaven.
  • Almighty Janitor: His avatar in All Living Things is a weak-looking Level 13 human. Naturally, none of his Level 100+ opponents expect much from him, but he's able to soundly defeat them all with light metal manipulation and without moving an inch.
  • The Ghost: He only starts getting brought up by the halfway point of Season 1, and does not show up for the majority of Xiao Hei's journey. His one speaking appearance, where he advises Xiao Hei not to trick Laojun, is either a previous conversation or a telepathic conversation. Either way, you don't even get to see his face. He is Unseen No More when makes a proper speaking appearance in Season 2, and fully appears by CAT 39.
  • Parental Substitute: You don't get to see it as much as in the prequel movie, but Wuxian is very clearly a father figure to Xiao Hei. Wuxian recgnizes Xiao Hei's need to become an Executor as his way of wanting to remain close to him, and even considers masquerading as Xiao Hei's legal guardian when the latter expresses an interest in going to human school.
  • Quest Giver: Serves as this for Xiao Hei. He already gave the boy the Pearl of Heaven quest, and in Season 2 asks him to befriend some humans and clear the All Living Things game.

Other

     Bidiu
Voiced by: Tao Bao
A chamecavy that A'Gen and his grandfather caught. Xiao Bai soon names and adopts it.
  • Big Eater: Bidiu's appetite is so big they ate a hole in A'Gen's grandfather's house.
  • Chameleon Camouflage: When a Chamecavy eats something, their fur typically changes to the color or pattern of what they just ate in order to blend into their surroundings. This doesn't apply when consuming living things, however.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Chamecavies like Bidiu can eat through anything, including solid wood and steel. The only things that don't agree with their stomachs are living things (which also includes trees).
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Part beaver, part squirrel, all adorable.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Wood.
  • Team Pet: Xiao Hei acts as this in public, but Bidiu is truly this for the main cast and especially Xiao Hei.
  • Spell My Name With An S: the name can also be pronounced as "Pi Yu", and is written as such on later subtites for the original series.
  • Verbal Tic Name: Xiao Bai named Bidiu after the sounds they make.

     Hei Xu
Voiced by: Ai Suo
Creatures that result from Xiao Hei splitting up his tail. There are usually four at a time.
  • Animal Eye Spy: When Xiao Hei can't be in the area for whatever reason, the Hei Xus act as extra eyes for him.
  • Leitmotif: They have the calm, cute lullaby "Hei Xu Rhapsody", which is also generally played during sad or heartwarming moments.
  • Verbal Tic Name: Whenever they speak, they say "Hei Xu"! Averted in the Legend of Hei English dub, where they only make cat noises.

     Huangshou
Shanxin's pet cat who later becomes incredibly infatuated with Xiao Hei after the former saves him from a neighboring dog.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: After Xiao Hei saves him from a dog, Huangshou always sticks to the black cat when they see them, to Xiao Hei's dismay.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Huangshou doesn't seem to mind that Xiao Hei is male and he continues to stick to Xiao Hei whenever he sees him.
  • Meaningful Name: The "Shou" character in his name is also slang for a gay bottom. Huangshou is considered the "bottom" in his relationship with Xiao Hei, and almost exclusively imagines himself as the Uke.
  • Rescue Romance: Xiao Hei's impressive acrobatics and ease in dealing with Satan causes Huangshou to fall head over heels for him.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Huangshou falls in love with and sticks to Xiao Hei, even fantasizing about getting together with the black cat.

    Spirit Hall

Kali

Voiced by:Xaihou Luofeng
The current owner of the Spirit Hall.
  • Arbitrarily Large Bank Account: Kali has a black card with a seemingly bottomless amount of money, in addition to his absurdly large palace. He lends the card out to any Elfin or magical creature seeking out assistance, since he knows how hard it can be for them to adjust to human life and culture. Xiao Hei's group gets it to pay for water damages to A'Gen's home.
  • Money Fetish: While he uses it for practical reasons, it seems like Kali just loves money in general. The secondary reason he set up all the harsh rules of All Living Things as he did was simply because it could earn him some more cash.
  • Mr. Exposition: In Season 1, he explains the basics of the Spirit Hall and certain rules and history concerning it.
  • Sunglasses at Night: Kali is always seen wearing a pair of black sunglasses.

Tu Bei

Voiced by:Baomu Zhongyang
Kali's primary attendant.

Qingqiu

Qianzhen

Polao

Fu

  • Butt-Monkey: Poor guy can't catch a break. He plays most of the comic relief role for the Spirit Hall characters, with his misfortune serving as the punchline. His impatience can also make him an easy target for his opponents, getting him killed multiple times in All Living Things.
