Main Characters

    Alus Reigin

Alus Reigin

The current #1 Magicmaster, who is on leave from the frontlines and currently attends classes at the Second Magical Institute.
  • Admiring the Abomination: During his fight with an SS-Class Devourer, he's fascinated by how quickly and skillfully the fiend can construct spells.
  • Chain Pain: His AWR, Night Mist, is a dagger attached to a chain, with magic formulas on each link.
  • Energy Absorption: Alus has two types of mana in his body. One of it is his attribute-less mana, the other is sentient and has a more sinister nature that wants to devour all mana in its surroundings when released. Alus can barely control it even after years of training, and the fact that Gra Eater is disturbingly similar to Fiends in nature and behavior is not lost on him.
  • Genius Slob: He's a prodigy at magic and research, but he can't keep his laboratory clean to save his life.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He doesn't bother with tact when interacting with his classmates and treats them as annoyances. He later becomes more considerate towards them and allows them to join him on dangerous missions, even if he doesn't fully trust their abilities.
  • Lonely at the Top: His combat abilities frighten a lot of the other frontline mages. This, combined with his lack of need for a partner, means he takes on most missions alone. Which was why he actually enjoyed his fight against Elise, as it's the first time someone was able to match him in skill.
  • Mana Drain: In addition to being able to use attribute-less spells, he can form his second type of mana into a beast, Gra Eater, that devours mana from others.
  • Motive Misidentification: Alus initially wonders if Godma wanted his research to benefit mankind's struggle against Fiends, but after further examination, he concludes that the scientist only cares about flaunting his "brilliance."
  • Non-Elemental: His mana is considered attribute-less.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: He doesn't give a damn if humanity were to die aside from the fact that it would inconvenience him due to him growing up in the battlefield, which kept him from properly developing his emotions and temperament of a normal Magicmaster. The only reason he hasn't outright quit the military when he tried to retire is due to his debt on the current Governor-General, and even then, he still compromised to have an indefinite leave, only being called if necessary.
  • Not So Stoic: He drops his unflappable demeanor and becomes giddy whenever he learns of an opportunity to get rare research materials.
  • Rebuff the Amateur: Downplayed. He usually doesn't like working with newbies like Tesfia and Alice, but he allows Tesfia to join him in rescuing Alice because he knows how personal the mission is to her. Though he states he would have knocked her out if he didn't think she had enough resolve.
  • Retired Badass: He completed the minimum of ten years of service to retire and wants to make good on that requirement, but the higher-ups want to keep him ready to rejoin the front-lines because of how much Alpha depends on him.
  • Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: Due to his talents in magic, he was recruited into the military at age six and spent most of his life in training and combat, but has no idea how to function as a civilian. When he sees a vending machine in the school cafeteria, he needs help from Tesfia and Alice to operate it.
  • Strong, but Unskilled: Downplayed. Alus could use all attributes except Light and Dark but lacks precise control on any single element (which means that his spells can sometimes end up much stronger than intended). This has to do with the fact that he's so strong that he never actually specialized on a single attribute in favor of using all of them. Normally this isn't a problem in the Outer World, where he faces off against Fiends, but when fighting in the Inner World he often has to take into account how his spells affect his surroundings.
  • What Is This Feeling?: He starts asking this to himself more and more as he interacts with the rest of the cast over the course of the novel, as a result of his stunted emotions starting to develop.

    Tesfia Fable

Tesfia Fable

  • Fiery Redhead: She has red hair and is quick to anger at Alus's lack of social skills. Ironically, her element is ice.
  • Heroic BSoD: Averted. Despite nearly getting killed by a fiend, she maintains her will to fight.
  • An Ice Person: She specializes in ice magic.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite initially being hostile to Alus, she mainly acts this way because he was being rude to Alice first, who she is very protective of.

    Alice Tilake

Alice Tilake

  • Attack Reflector: She has the light elemental spell, Reduction, which can bounce back an enemy's attack.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She grew up in a poor family and had an illness while she was young. Her medical results revealed she had an elemental affinity and the government convinced her parents that they could turn her into a Magicmaster while promising them money. They agreed, unaware that Alice would be subjected to unethical experiments, and that the researchers would withhold visiting rights if she spoke about the experiments. By the time the experiments were shut down, she learns that her parents were killed by a robber, making her suffering in the experiments for nothing.
  • Light 'em Up: She has an affinity with the light element and it's a genuine elemental factor, which is why Godma needs her for his experiments.
  • Nice Girl: She's always kind and patient to everyone, including Alus despite his rudeness towards others.
  • Non-Elemental: She turns out to have affinity for non-elemental magic, possibly as a side-effect of Godma's Element Factor Separation Project.

    Felinella Socalent

Felinella Socalent

  • The Ace: She's a second-year with a triple digit ranking, and has live combat experience.
  • Blow You Away: She specializes in wind magic.
  • Combat Pragmatist: One of her strategies is to use wind magic to obstruct her opponent's sight and hearing, making it nearly impossible to counterattack her.
  • Hero-Worshipper: She admires Alus due to stories of his exploits she heard from her father, and gets angry when she thinks Sisty is interrogating him.
  • Love Before First Sight: As described below, she fell in love with Alus even before meeting him.
  • Loving a Shadow: In her backstory at least, she fell in love with the Alus from her father's war stories, but she realizes she doesn't really know much about his situation. Later, she realizes that Alus is far from the ideal fairytale hero that she was thinking of, since he doesn't know of anything in life outside of hunting fiends, but that didn't stop her from loving him as he was anyway.
  • Military Brat: She is the daughter of General Vizaist, which is why she knew Alus's rank from the start.
  • Mission Control: She can use her wind magic to quickly gather information on the battlefield and inform her allies.
  • Not So Stoic: She's normally the model composed noble, but she can get unexpectedly flustered when interacting with Alus.
  • Royal Rapier: She uses a rapier AWR.

    Loki Leevahl

Loki Leevahl

  • A-Cup Angst: She's angered when Felinella accidentally touches Alus with her large breasts while bandaging him. In a later colored illustration, she's shown to be displeased with being the flattest of the girls.
  • Almighty Janitor: Despite having combat prowess on par with a double-digit magician, she chooses to become a spotter for Alus.
  • Due to the Dead: She originally trained to become a Magicmaster in order to find the place where her parents died and make a grave for them.
  • Hero-Worshipper: She reveres Alus for saving her in the past and she chafes with Tesfia and Alice for being too casual with him.
  • Sensor Character: She can detect Fiends within 1 km.
  • Shock and Awe: She specializes in lightning magic.
  • Took A Levelin Badass: Inverted. Due to her becoming a spotter without a partner (as she wants to partner with only Alus), her ranking started to slip due to not being deployed as much to missions, which dulled her fighting ability. She slowly gets back to her previous level of skill, and later exceeding it (at which point she plays this trope straight), after she starts getting trained by Alus.

Second Magical Institute

    Sisty Nexophia

Sisty Nexophia

The principal of the Second Magical Institute and a former single digit.
  • Blow You Away: When Godma attempts to destroy the institute with a taboo spell, Sisty blocks the attack with a massive wind barrier.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: When Alus tries to play hooky to her meetings, she threatens to dock his credits over the school's PA system.
  • Crazy-Prepared: She prepared several pillars filled with her mana around the school, allowing her to fend off any attempt to bombard the school.
  • Retired Badass: She was once ranked 9 before retiring from active duty to become a principal. As shown by how easily she blocks Godma's taboo spell, she more than lives up to her rank.

Other Alpha Characters

    Queen Cicelnia il Arzeit

Cicelnia il Arzeit

The current ruler of Alpha.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: She soils herself after experiencing Alus's killing intent. He considers her impressive for still being able to snark at him afterwards.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Since Alus is mainly working for Alpha for his own research purposes rather than genuine loyalty, Cicelnia is constantly worried that he'll leave Alpha for another country, which would lower Alpha's standing. She doesn't take it well when the Friendship Tournament rules are changed so that the nations can recruit the student participants, since this could result in Alus defecting.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: She and Alus don't get along, to the point where Alus kneels before a rival head of state just to spite her. He doesn't like that she wants to use his position as rank 1 to gain an advantage over other countries.

    Godma Barhong

Godma Barhong

The rogue scientist behind the Element Factor Separation Project.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He built his lab out of material that increases mana usage for all magic except light magic, giving his doll army an advantage.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: After his defeat, he goads Alice into finishing him off, but is flabbergasted when she refuses.
  • Evil Counterpart: Like Alus, he is antisocial, is not very empathetic, and is obsessed with research. Unlike Alus, who has standards and cares for his experiment subjects, Godma has no moral boundaries and doesn't even see his research subjects as people.
  • Faux Affably Evil: After beating up Melissa, he notes that her hair is messy and speaks softly as he combs her hair, but the narration points out that despite his soft tone, he takes sadistic pleasure in her terror.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: After he's caught by the military, an assassin sneaks into the room where he's being held and stabs him to death.
  • Mad Scientist: In his experiments to turn test subjects into light magic users, he broke their minds and left most of them as mindless slaves to his will. When Alpha's government decided to shut down his research, he went into hiding to continue his experiments, kidnap more test subjects, and kill anyone who tries to stop him.
  • One-Winged Angel: He uses a Book of Fegel and a syringe filled with a mixture of Alice's blood and Fiend blood to transform into a giant, light-using fiend.
  • Powered by a Forsaken Child: He has his test subjects sacrifice their lives in order to cast the taboo spell Senas Requiem.
  • The Sociopath: He's an egomaniac who believes his genius should be appreciated by everyone, has no empathy for his test subjects or any person in general, is emotionally manipulative towards Melissa, and seeks stimulation in the form of satisfying his scientific curiosity.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: After he transforms into a fiend, he can match Alus in speed while having high durability and a Healing Factor. He's also not a skilled physical fighter and is mostly outmaneuvered by Alus in their duel.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Most of his test subjects are children, and he treats them all as disposable dolls.
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good!: Alus believes Godma's intelligence could have been used to better humanity without performing inhumane experiments.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness:
    • He suppressed the nervous system of his test subjects both so he can control them and so to suppress their body's rejection of foreign elemental factors. When the latter part fails and they start experiencing symptoms again, he throws them down a disposal chute.
    • Once he gets Alice's blood sample and extracts the light element factor from it, he orders Melissa to kill her.
    • When Melissa breaks free from Godma's control, he tries to sacrifice her to cast Senas Requiem.

    Melissa Laness

Melissa

One of Godma's only two sentient test subjects and and old friend of Alice.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: She stabs herself so that she doesn't get sacrificed for Godma's taboo spell.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Godma left her emotions intact, but is able to control her at any time. He takes advantage of this by manipulating her into trying to warn Alice of his plans, only to take control of her and have her kidnap Alice.
  • Cool Big Sis: She acted as a pillar of support for Alice during their days as test subjects. However, Godma states that of the two, Melissa is the one with a greater need for emotional dependency.
  • Hope Spot: When she manages to break free of Godma's control near the end of Volume 3, he activates a taboo spell with her as the sacrifice. Then she kills herself in order to prevent the spell.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Godma states she has a condition where she needs someone to latch onto, which is how he manipulated her into staying by his side.

    Frose Fable

Frose Fable

The current head of the Frose family.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • She's disgusted at how the military gathered the children of Magicmasters who died in combat and manipulated them into seeking revenge on the Fiends.
    • She doesn't approve of aristocrats behaving in a disgraceful manner and abusing their power, as shown when she intimidates Buhon when he tries to sexually harass Loki.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: She wants Tesfia to drop out of the academy because the latter might drag the family name through the mud if she underperforms. Even when Tesfia improves substantially, Frose still doesn't want her to continue her training because there's still a high chance that she'll die in battle. She has a change of heart after seeing how much Tesfia improved in the tournament.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Despite working hard enough to become a triple-digit, she was never able to catch up to Sisty, who went up to double-digit and single-digit. This explains why she's so cynical towards Tesfia's efforts.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While her obstruction of Tesfia's dream to become a Magicmaster comes off as projection of her own perceived failures, she has a point about how their family is doomed if their only heiress dies on the battlefield, which is very likely to happen due to how even talented mages end up faltering in live combat. She also admonishes Tesfia for making light of killing someone else, even in self-defense.
  • Retired Badass: She was a triple-digit before retiring, and was known for being a great strategist.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Alus calls her out for putting her family's reputation over Tesfia's honest desire to save her friend.

    Selva

Selva

The butler of the Frose family.
  • Battle Butler: He holds his own in a mock battle with Alus and displays mana control that impresses the latter.
  • Open-Minded Parent: While he's not Tesfia's father, he is partially responsible for raising her and is more encouraging of her efforts to become a Magicmaster than her own mother.
  • Retired Badass: Before becoming a butler, he was the leader of Afeluca, an assassin unit that reported directly to the sovereign.
  • Wire Fu: Instead of real wires, he can form wires made of mana in order to bind his opponent or cut them.

    Lettie Kultunca

Lettie Kultunca

The current rank 7.
  • The Ace: Not only is she a single-digit, she's known for having a low casualty rate for her subordinates.
  • Fun Personified: She's informal and friendly with everyone, including Alus, who most mages are scared to approach.
  • The Gadfly: She's not afraid to mess with Alus by flirting with him, despite him being rank 1.

Rusalca

    Lithia Touff Infratta

Lithia Touff Infratta

The ruler of Rusalca.
  • Big-Breast Pride: While arguing with Cicelnia, she boasts that her chest is bigger.
  • The Rival: She and Cicelnia are always trying to one-up each other as rulers and constantly throw insults at each other. Alus uses this to his advantage by subtly threatening to defect to Rusalca, which would give Lithia an advantage over Cicelnia and humiliate the latter.

    Jean Rumbulls

Jean Rumbulls

The current rank 3.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: He's the highest ranking Magicmaster in his country and is kind and polite to everyone, which makes it all the more surprising that his apprentice doesn't share the same traits.
  • The Worf Effect: Despite being a Single-Digit, he's injured by Elise, a high-ranking Kurama member. Alus states that even if he teamed with with the current rank 2, Jean wouldn't be able to beat her.

    Fillic Argan

Fillic Argan

A student from Rusulca's First Magical Institute who participates in the Friendship Magical Tournament.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He seems like a well-behaved student at first, but he reveals that he considers Alus a fraud as rank 1 and wants to pick a fight with him. When Loki faces him in the tournament, she notes that the way he uses dark magic indicates that he's a twisted person deep down.
  • Casting a Shadow: He's a dark-elemental mage and is of the variety that uses shadow to create minions and body armor. The other type of dark caster focuses on illusionary spells.
  • Foil: Like Loki, he hero worships his teacher, but takes it way too far by antagonizing anyone he perceives as stealing Jean's valor. In contrast, Loki sees Alus as a person rather than an icon and admires him for his kindness rather than just his strength.
  • Jerkass at Your Discretion: He'll act like a model student when he needs to uphold his school's image, but when interacting with Alus and Loki, he treats them with contempt and seeks to humiliate them.
  • Loony Fan: He's angered at the idea that anyone could be stronger than Jean, despite Jean himself admitting that Alus is stronger. As a result, Fillic is under the delusion that he can at least make Alus struggle to win against him.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: He was a magic-using thief before Jean defeated and recruited him. However, he's still a violent and sadistic Jerkass, only now he's obsessed with defending his teacher's honor.
  • Worthy Opponent: Initially, he underestimates Loki, but admits that she's a tough opponent after she forces him to use Yaksha's Garment to defend against her attacks.

Kurama

    Elise

Elise

  • Create Your Own Villain: Alpha's brass betrayed her and used her as a lab experiment, causing her to defect to the criminal organization, Kurama.
  • Defeat Means Respect: After Alus defeats her, she gives him some information before escaping.
  • Fallen Heroine: She was once a single-digit in Alpha's military, Minalis Folce Quartz, but went rogue after her superiors subjected her to illegal experimentation.
  • Heel Realization: After seeing that Alus has a similarly monstrous unique ability as her, Elise realizes that she gave up too soon on her original goal of being a defender of humanity.
  • Making a Splash: She's a master of water magic, using it to create water blades and drown her opponents. She is able to form powerful tails of black liquid known as Tartarus and with her One Eye of Salem, she can crash anything she sees with artificial water pressure.
  • Older Than They Look: Thanks to her One Eye of Salem, Elise hasn't aged past her teens despite being over 50.
  • Real Name as an Alias: She uses her original name, Minalis, when infiltrating a combat practice event in the school festival.

    Hazan

Hazan

  • Blood Knight: He's eager to pick a fight with single-digits, even if doing so doesn't help his current mission.
  • Blow You Away: He can use wind magic to form armor or to just shred his opponent.
  • Dumb Muscle: Downplayed. Despite being a reckless brute who prioritizes his desire for battle over his missions, he's experienced enough in combat to catch Jean off guard and cut off his movements.
