Protagonists

    The Player
The person behind the computer, who is tasked with guiding the Batter once again.

    The Batter
The purifier of the world, who is called forth to repeat his crusade.
  • Not So Stoic: Throughout almost the entire game, he is as stoic as he was in the original. But in the Lost Purpose ending, when he defeats the Switch only for it to vanish, leaving him unable to accomplish his mission and purify the world, he panics and breaks down.
  • Pet the Dog: In the route where you choose to save the Judge instead of Lady Magdalene, Vanni can confront him about it in an optional boss fight. Should the Batter defeat him, he spares him, saying that because he is not an evil person, he does not need to be purified. A rare moment of mercy from an otherwise merciless and stoic purifier.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: The Lost Purpose ending has him finally reach the Switch to shut off the world, but upon defeating it, the Switch vanished entirely. The Batter is left in shock and despair at being unable to complete his mission.

Guardians

    General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/group_photo.png

The keepers of the Zones. God created three Elsens to serve as additional guardians after the demise of the originals to serve as the leaders of the Districts of Arbela. Eventually, a fourth was made, and the original four Guardians came back to life as well. But the Spectres and corruption turned them all into maniacal harbingers of death and the Serpent, who was once one of them until he betrayed them.

  • Ball of Light Transformation: In Layer 2, the Arbela Guardians turn into balls with their respective colors after the Batter either helps with their requests or gives them their respective items.
  • Elite Four: The Four Arbela Guardians are the keepers and bosses of the Four Districts of The City.
  • Fallen Hero: In addition to the old Guardians, secret memories and flashbacks show how the new Guardians were once idealists who slowly built a new world for everyone that would be even better than the old one. When the Spectre outbreak happened, they banded together to protect their people and fight the threat. But as the war waged on, their idealism wore down. Then one big misunderstanding between Abram and Zaphkiel caused both of them to fall to evil, taking the rest of the Guardians (save the Judge) with them, either via The Corruption spread by Abram or Zaphkiel pressuring them to take extreme measures to protect the world.
  • Heel Realization: In Layer 2 of the Tower, you can meet the spirits of the Arbela Guardians who sincerely regret victimizing innocent people while they were alive, and hope to make amends.
  • Scaled Up: Abram and Zaphkiel both turn into dragons in their final fights in their respective routes.

Deities

    God

Zaphkiel the Attendant

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bluend_1.png

The creator and god of the new world, who has restored it to the state it was originally in. He is worshipped by the church and tasks the Batter with purifying the world from the Spectres and corruption that ravage it.

  • Big Bad Ensemble: He and the Serpent/Abram and are the entities fighting for control over the remade world, with the Serpent being the source of The Corruption turning the Guardians, Elsens, and Spectres into his monstrous minions and trying to destroy the world, while Zaphkiel seeks to eradicate them to assimilate everyone and become the supreme ruler of the world. Depending on the route you choose, you can help or defy either of them.
  • Demiurge Archetype: He claims to be God and creator of the new world, but he did so with the help of Abram, both of whom are creations of the true “god”, Hugo. Zaphkiel does have art of Hugo in his church, but for the most part has supplanted him as the deity to be worshipped, and wants to protect everyone from the Serpent and his corruption only as part of his own Assimilation Plot that will turn the world into a false utopia ruled by him and his Corrupt Church.
  • Light Is Not Good: He represents light in contrast to the darkness of Serpent and The Corruption, his color motif is a calming Heavenly Blue in contrast to the Red and Black and Evil All Over of the Serpent, and he is the god of the local church. He is also a Demiurge Archetype who wants to carry out an Assimilation Plot to turn the world into a false utopia where Individuality Is Illegal and both his faithful and all who don't worship him are regularly killed.
  • Faux Affably Evil: In contrast to the genuinely Affably Evil Abram, Zaphkiel speaks politely and formally in a manner befitting a god, but his version of kindness is condescending and betrays a sense of superiority over all beings, which goes with his Assimilation Plot to force everyone to worship him.
  • Godhood Seeker: He creates a religion with himself as its god and wants the Batter to acquire the Grand Items needed to actually ascend to godhood.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: He is named after the Archangel of contemplation who assists those who need to make decisions and represents Binah (understanding) in the Tree of Life, similarly to how this Zaphkiel tries to guide you into making the decision of whether to fight against the corruption or help spread it. Though his version of wisdom and understanding is far more sinister than it initially seems.

    The Serpent

Abram the Doppelganger

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/redend3alt.png

The entity responsible for spreading the corruption throughout the Zones. He seeks to destroy everything, and the Batter is tasked with bringing him down.

  • Affably Evil: Despite being the source of the corruption and trying to destroy the world with it, he is personally just as pleasant as he was before his Face–Heel Turn, coming across as an ordinary, reasonable fellow when speaking to the Batter. It helps that he genuinely believes he is doing the Crapsack World a favor by destroying it and is driven by a sense of justice.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: He and God/Zaphkiel are the entities fighting for control over the remade world, with the Serpent being the source of The Corruption turning the Guardians, Elsens, and Spectres into his monstrous minions and trying to destroy the world, while God seeks to eradicate them to assimilate everyone and become the supreme ruler of the world. Depending on the route you choose, you can help or defy either of them.
  • The Corrupter: As befitting his Satanic Archetype status, he is both the source of The Corruption and trying to manipulate the Batter and the player into helping him spread it throughout the new world.
  • Plaguemaster: According to the creator, he is the physical manifestation of Hugo’s terminal illness, and his corruption that he spreads is the illness itself.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: He is named after the Hebrew patriarch of the Abrahamic religions, similarly to how this Abram is one of the two creators of the reborn Zones.
  • Satanic Archetype: The Serpent is the source of The Corruption afflicting the world, which he uses to turn the Guardians and Elsens into his minions, and he has a cult of worshippers who wear Red and Black and Evil All Over while worshipping his Virus as salvation from God and the church. He used to be the equal of God/Zaphkiel, but upon learning that Zaphkiel was apparently the one manipulating the Queen into ravaging the world with Spectres, he grew furious at the betrayal and turned against Zaphkiel and his Corrupt Church.
  • Zero-Effort Boss: As the Husk in the Blue route, he can only slightly heal himself and hit with very weak attacks.

    The Cherubim/Azathoth
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cherubim_body.png
The Cherubim
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/azathoth_46.png
Azathoth

The fusions between Abram and Zaphkiel. The Cherubim is created in the Blue endings of the Red route and serves as their final boss, while Azathoth serves as the final boss of the Outside Tower.

  • Defeat Means Friendship: If you beat Azathoth as Jericho, he congratulated and befriends him and his party.
  • Fusion Dance: The result of one with Abram and Zaphkiel. In the Red route, the Cherubim is more unstable and easily-beaten due to the fusion being unwilling and the two gods struggling against each other, while Azathoth is more powerful as it is the result of the gods willingly fusing.
  • Gruesome Goat: Azathoth is a powerful, god-like goat who is the fusion between Abram and Zaphkiel, the respective Satanic Archetype and Demiurge Archetype, and the True Final Boss of the game.
  • True Final Boss: Azathoth is the boss at the end of the Outside Tower, the true final area, and beating it as Jericho unlocks an extra ending.

    Hugo
The original creator of the world, now deceased.
  • God Is Dead: Hugo has long since been killed by the Batter, but his world remains, recreated by two new gods who have taken his place. His spirit does show up in a handful of endings and as the Superboss, however.
  • Superboss: He is the extra boss at the end of the True Boss Rush in the Outside Tower and the ultimate test of skill.

Original Guardians

    The Judge
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/corrupted_judge.png

The Guardian of Zone 0, having been brought back to life. He has been afflicted by the corruption and tries his best to fight it.

  • Black Eyes of Evil: As a sign of the corruption afflicting him, he has these for most of the game.
  • Death Seeker: While in the original game he fought the Batter to preserve that little was left of the world, the new world is so extremely awful and corrupted even compared to the original that he has no desire to prolong his existence anymore. He begs the Batter to kill him in his first battle, and even if saved later on, will allow the Batter to flip the switch to end the world with no hesitation.
  • Opponent Instruction: A darker than usual version. As the Warmup Boss forced by the corruption to fight you, he refreshes your memory on how the combat system works while pleading for you to end his suffering.
  • Rage Against the Heavens: In the Blue route, he expresses his hatred for Zaphkiel, the lying false god who bears much responsibility for the Zones becoming a Crapsack World again, refuses to worship him like many of the Elsens do, and begs the Batter to not let him achieve his Assimilation Plot.
  • Route Boss: If you choose to save Magdalene instead of him in the Prison District, you fight his fully-corrupted self atop the corrupted Zone 0.
  • Speaks in Binary: If you choose not to save him from Adam, the corruption becomes so serve that it transforms his lines into binary.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Along with Macey, his fight in the Outside Tower Boss Rush is the exact same as his battle in the corrupted Zone 0 with the same stats.
  • Warmup Boss: His corrupted self is the first enemy you fight at the end of the short Zone 0.

    Dedan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dedan_2.png
Corrupted
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dedan_pure.png
Pure

The Guardian of Zone 1.

  • Arc Villain: Of Zone 1, which he rules as a tyrant under influence from Forniret.
  • Dual Boss: Dedan fights alongside his Add-On, Babylon.
  • Starter Villain: As in the original, Dedan is the first Guardian you fight (after the brief Warmup Boss with the Judge).

    Japhet
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/japhet_1.png
Corrupted
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/japhet_pure_form.png
Pure

The Guardian of Zone 2.

  • Arc Villain: Of Zone 2, where he is attacking the Elsens under influence from the Parasite.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Japhet (in the body of Valerie) has pitch-black eyes to show the extent of the corruption afflicting him.
  • Dual Boss: His pure variant fights alongside Valerie as an Add-On.

    Enoch
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enoch_1.png
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enoch_20.png
Corrupted

The Guardian of Zone 3.

  • Arc Villain: Of Zone 3, which he has turned into a factory of death under influence from the Mimic Slug.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Enoch, like Japhet, has pitch-black eyes to show the extent of the corruption afflicting him.
  • Combat Tentacles: His corrupted form grows these in place of his arms.

Arbela Guardians

    Malachi the Caretaker
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/malachi_intro.png

The Guardian of the Residental District. He sought to build a district where everyone could live in peace. Then he became hit with the corruption and is now leading the Spectres in invading the once-peaceful apartments.

    Jadon the Entertainer
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jadons_introduction.png

The Guardian of the Entertainment District. He sought to build a district modeled after the park from Zone 2 so that everyone can have fun. He was hit by a Spectre who slowly corrupted him, and now he has turned his park into a death trap. He is also very interested in stealing the player's puppet from them.

  • Arc Villain: Of the Entertainment District, which he has turned into an Amusement Park of Doom.
  • Driven by Envy: He is enamored with the Batter and would love nothing more than to steal him from the player as his puppet.
  • Evil Puppeteer: He is the Guardian of the Entertainment District who, under the influence of The Corruption, has turned it into an Amusement Park of Doom. He also uses the Puppet Elsens and Dusk Workers as puppets whom he controls. He positions himself as an Evil Counterpart to the player and is jealous of your puppet, the Batter, and so has built a whole bunch of twisted, inferior clones in his image, and tries to steal control of the Batter from you.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: His name means "God has heard" and "a judge/whom God has judged", and shares the name with one of the builders of the wall of Jerusalem and a minor prophet.
  • Sequential Boss: He first fights you in a basic form, but once you beat him, he is promptly possessed by Pazuzu, the Spectre inside him, and takes on a new form with more HP and buffed defense.

    Gaius the Architect
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gaius_introduction.png

The Guardian of the Industrial District. He sought to build a district that could produce and export the materials needed to keep Arbela running. Unlike the others, he has not succumbed to corruption and is willing to help the Player and Batter out.

  • Arc Villain: Of the Industrial District, when it is revealed he built it through horrible experiments on Elsens and Ghouls.
  • Flunky Boss: His main body is protected by the spirits of his three assistants.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Gaius, or Caius in Roman spelling, is a figure in the New Testament who was a companion of Paul the Apostle.
  • Token Good Teammate: Downplayed. He is the only Guardian who is able to keep his corruption under control thanks to his remote body, and the only one to not antagonize the Batter until the corruption becomes too much. At the same time, he was responsible for killing untold numbers of Elsens and performing unethical experiments to secure more resources for his people.
  • The Unfought: Subverted. He gets killed by the Resistance before you get to fight him, but it turns out this was only a remote body he built for himself. His true body, at the bottom of the factory labs, serves as the boss of the Industry District.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He genuinely wants to supply the dying world with enough resources to fight off the Spectres and corruption, and to feed the hungry populace. So he resorts to making Elsens sacrifice themselves so more material can be created from their corpses and is willing to perform horrifying experiments to create monstrous Ghouls.

    Adam the Warden
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adam5.png

The Guardian of the Prison District. Created by Gaius as part of his experiments in creating life, he showed signs of sociopathy from a young age. He went on to become the leader of the Resistance, and the Warden of the cruel prison in which he torments and enslaved his prisoners in his mad plan to usurp both Abram and Zaphkiel as the god of the world.

  • Arc Villain: Of the Prison District, which he rules like a dictator and imprisons the Batter in as part of his plan to become the new god of the Zones.
  • Godhood Seeker: He plans to become the new God, surpassing even Abram and Zaphkiel, by using a device to suck the life force out of tons of Elsen prisoners and the Judge.
  • Rebel Leader: He is the leader of the Resistance who directs their efforts in fighting the Spectres and corrupted Guardians.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: He is named after the first man created by God, much like how this Adam was the first successful product of the project by Gaius to create life.
  • Sssssnake Talk: He rolls out his s sounds as part of his general snake motif.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In the backstory, he heard Zaphkiel secretly speaking to Queen Vader Eloha about the Spectres, and got the idea that he had been manipulating her into directing the Spectre invasion all along, so he told Abram to confront them about it. Unfortunately, this led to Abram snapping and becoming the Serpent who would spread his corruption throughout the new world.
  • Wardens Are Evil: He is the warden of the Prison District who has Elsens imprisoned on what are implied to be false charges so he can use them as slave labor, and has no problem killing them with his Spectres or sending them to the chop shop to be turned into Ghouls.

Spectres

    General
The species of entities who ravaged the world in the last, and who are brought back by Queen Vader Eloha to once again invade. They have been afflicted with The Corruption and are the primary vector by which it spreads in the new world.
  • Ghastly Ghost: They were already frightening ghosts in the original game, but here, the corruption turns many of them into even more disturbing, and sometimes fleshy, monstrosities.

    Pazuzu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pazuzu_1.png

The Spectre corrupting Jadon. He first came into contact with Jadon as an experiment by Gaius, entering his body. He would slowly turn Jadon aggressive and bring forth the corruption into his body, turning Jadon into a maniacal puppeteer who would transform the Entertainment Dostrict into a death trap. He is fought directly in the Outside Tower.

  • Arc Villain: Along with Jadon for the Entertainment District, as he is the Spectre corrupting Jadon into becoming his servant and turning the District into an Amusement Park of Doom.
  • The Corrupter: He has been the one slowly turning Jadon Ax-Crazy since the day he first entered his body, whispering to him and encouraging him to attack his dear friends.
  • Villain Override: Similarly to the Usurper Ghouls, when Jadon fails to beat the Batter in the first phase of his fight, Pazuzu personally takes control of his body and fights you himself.

Ghouls

    General
A new species of creature roaming the world. They consist of ordinary ghouls who roam the world, corrupted ghouls who spread the corruption, and the Usurper Ghouls, servants of Abram who corrupt the Guardians of the world.
  • Fantastic Fauna Counterpart: Many ghouls act akin to dogs. Jericho in particular is playful and energetic, loves being petted, and is very devoted to his creator, Gaius, in the manner of a dog and their owner.
  • Our Ghouls Are Creepier: These ghouls are typically very canine/vulpine in shape, and most of them act like wild animals, though there are some sapient ones like Jericho.
  • Villain Override: Three of the Usurper Ghouls — Forniret, the Parasite, and the Mimic Slug — forcibly take control of Dedan, Japhet, and Enoch respectively in the Red route and fight the Batter using their bodies as puppets. Daedelus is the only one to not do this.

Jericho and his Party

    Jericho
A friendly ghoul who shows up every now and then to help the Batter in his journey.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: You first meet him as a boss blocking your way to the Entertainment District. Once you beat him, he befriends you and helps you every now and then.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: He briefly becomes a playable character in the Industry District factory and the Prison District, and can join the Batter in his party for the latter area. He can also be played in the Outside Tower.
  • Hero of Another Story: By the time you meet back with him in the Outside Tower, he and Jeska have made a full party with two other ghouls and even reached the level Cap of 40, clearly indicating they had their fair share of offscreen adventures.
  • Third-Person Person: He frequently refers to himself as Jericho or "this one".

    Jeska
A ghoul who occasionally shows up on the Batter’s journey to greet him like the Judge once did.
  • Royal "We": She always addresses herself in this manner.

    Jabbok and Jabdo
A duo of ghouls who join Jericho and Jeska’s party.

Usurper Ghouls

    Forniret
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/forniret.png

The three-headed ghoul corrupting Dedan. You fight them in Layer 2 of the Tower in the Red route.

  • Hellhound: They heavily resemble a white-and-red Cerberus with their three heads and dog-like shape, and they are a corrupting force in Zone 1.
  • Route Boss: You only fight them directly in the Red route, at the end of the corrupted Zone 1 in the Tower.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: They first show up as two snakes protruding from Dedan’s mouth while seizing control of him.
  • Starter Villain: Along with Dedan himself, as they are the one corrupting him into becoming the cruel tyrant of Zone 1.

    The Parasite
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_parasite.png

The tiny ghoul corrupting Japhet. You fight it in Layer 2 of the Tower in the Red route.

  • Puppeteer Parasite: As evidenced by its name, it wormed its way into the bird Japhet and slowly corrupted him.

    Mimic Slug
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_gluttonous_slug.png
The Gluttonous Slug

The ghoul corrupting Enoch. He disguises himself as Zacharie in Zone 3, playing the role he did in the original game, while spreading the corruption and killing the worker Elsens.

  • Arc Villain: Of Zone 3, as he is the one corrupting Enoch and spreading the corruption through the Zone.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He may be a servant of Abram who spreads his corruption and kills Elsens, but in the Red route, he expresses hatred for his boss, whom he considers a coward, and asks you to “give him hell”. In the Blue route, he calls out Zaphkiel for his actions in pursuit of godhood as well.
  • One-Winged Angel: He comes back in the Red route as the Gluttonous Slug, a gigantic body hanging from the skeleton of Enoch.

    Daedelus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/corrupted_malachi.png

The powerful commander of the bird Ghouls who attacked the Residential District, but was defeated by Malachi. However, he went on to corrupt Malachi, using him to attack the District once again under orders of Abram. He is fought directly in the Outside Tower.

  • Arc Villain: Alongside Malachi for the Residential District, as he is the one corrupting Malachi into becoming his servant and leading his bird Ghouls to attack the District.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He is first mentioned by an Elsen in the Residential District as a powerful Ghoul who Malachi bravely defeated. It takes until the true final area to learn that he is the one who corrupted Malachi into becoming a villain.
  • The Corrupter: He is the one who spread the corruption to the Residental District and used it to turn Malachi, the hero who defeated him, into his second-in-command.
  • Feathered Fiend: He is the leader of a battalion of bird Ghouls who attacked the Residential District and killed many Elsens in the past, and has Malachi, the hero who defeated him, Reforged into a Minion.
  • Flunky Boss: He has two Icarus ghouls fighting alongside him.

Other

    Macey
A pony-like ghoul created by Gaius as part of his experiments.
  • Hellish Horse: She might seem like a cute little pony-ghoul, but she is afflicted with The Corruption and talks about wanting to “play” with you in a disturbingly cutesy manner before fighting you. Then in her battle in the factory labs, she rips her body apart with long spikes to grow stronger.
  • Optional Boss: You can fight her after completing the Entertainment District and getting the Horseshoe Key needed to find her, and you can fight her again with another key at the bottom of the Industry District factory, though only after beating the Prison District.
  • Recurring Boss: You can fight her in the Entertainment District after beating it, then much later face her again in the factory labs under the Industry District. She then appears in the “fuck room” of the Test Room as an encounter who triggers every time you step on a tile, and as part of the Boss Rush and True Boss Rush of the Outside Tower.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Along with the Judge, her fight in the Outside Tower Boss Rush is the exact same as her battle in the factory labs with the same stats.

    Asterion
A ghoul created by Gaius to power his factory.

    Salathiel
Adam’s hydra-like pet ghoul. She sleeps in the Prison District, and guards the Batter’s equipment.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Salathiel was the son of Jehoiachin and Jeconiah in the Bible.
  • Right-Hand Attack Dog: She is Adam’s pet who has the job of guarding the equipment he stole from the Batter.
  • Skippable Boss: There are two ways of getting past her — you can fight her outright (which is discouraged by the game since she has a lot of health), or you can solve a puzzle to feed her and put her to sleep.

Gaius's Subordinates

    Roland
A top scientist working for Gaius. He is very timid, but does whatever he feels is best for his boss.
  • Face–Heel Turn: He starts out at least trying to help Gaius bring resources to his people through questionably ethical means. Then he is tricked by the Resistance into thinking the Batter murdered his boss and he joins them, and the next time the Batter sees him, he is gleefully operating machinery to turn Lady Magdalene into a ghoul.
  • Heel Realization: If you meet him in Layer 2 of the Tower, he expresses his remorse over all the Playing with Syringes he did in his life.
  • Mad Scientist: While under the employ of Gaius, he was willing to help in the creation of ghouls and some other dark experiments. But he really becomes this after joining the Resistance, operating the chop shop where he gleefully turns Elsens into ghouls.
  • Route Boss: You only fight him if you choose to save Magdalene. If not, he is killed by a ghoul-ified Magdalene before you can face him.

    Nathan, Rosemary, and Margaret
A trio of high-ranking scientists who worked under Gaius, but were killed by the experiments they did to provide resources and advance civilization in the wake of the Spectres and corruption. They ended up becoming Spectres after their death and now haunt the lower levels of the Industry District factory labs.
  • Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: They are last seen in Layer 3 of the Tower preparing to move on to the next life and encouraging you to get Gaius to come along.
  • Battle Couple: Margaret shows up in Spectre form to protect her husband Gaius and help him fight in the boss battle against him.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Margaret wears a pair of glasses and is the equally intelligent and beautiful deceased wife of Gaius.
  • Came Back Wrong: After their gruesome deaths, they returned as mindless Spectres out to ravage the world.
  • Fatal Flaw: They shared Gaius’ hubris in carrying out their experiments to better Elsenkind without regard to consequences or safety, and their recklessness got each of them killed.
  • Happily Married: Margaret and Gaius were, by what little we see, a happy couple using their shared knowledge to drive the Industry District. Her death is one of the reasons Gaius is so gloomy when we meet him.

The Resistance

    General
A militia of Elsens who have chosen to take up arms against the Serpent and his corrupted Guardians and Spectres.
  • Evil All Along: For the first six chapters, they are portrayed as a benevolent force out to protect the Elsens from the Spectres and corruption. Then they ambush and send the Batter to their Prison District, where we learn that they imprison Elsens to use them as slave labor for the war effort, have them killed and experimented on, and work under a boss who plans on replacing Abram and Zaphkiel as the god of the Zones.
  • Evil Wears Black: They are a radical, enslaving militia unit clad in black military gear, though their nature is not revealed until much later.
  • Kick the Dog: Every line they have in the prison is dedicated to showing how they cruelly mistreat the prisoners, just to make it clear that these are not the good guys like they have been painting themselves as.
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Civilized: They seek to overthrow the Serpent and the corrupted Guardians, but it turns out they are willing to enslave Elsens to mine materials for them and use them as Guinea pigs for experiments, and their leader just wants to replace the current gods so he can become the new god.

    Vanni
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vanni.png

The secondary leader of the Resistance.

  • The Dragon: To Adam. He leads the Resistance outside the prison on their missions to exterminate Spectres and the corruption, and helps his boss run the Prison District.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He starts out The Dragon to Adam, but when his boss orders his sister sent to the chop shop to be turned into a ghoul, he soon turns against him. If you save her, he fully turns to the side of good, while letting her die will have him act hostile to you.
  • Love Redeems: Familial variant; his sister Magdalene being sent by his boss to be experimented on is what causes him to abandon his cause.
  • Route Boss: You can only trigger his fight if you let his sister Magdalene die.

Others

    Zacharie
The local merchant as usual, always there to sell items to you and the Batter.

    Queen Vader Eloha
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vader_eloha.png

The Queen of the Zones, who has awakened in the new world.

  • Heel Realization: By the time the Batter finds her, she seems to have come to her senses and realized that she senselessly destroyed much of the world looking for a child who was no longer alive, and helped facilitate the decay of the new world. She begs the Batter to end her so they can rest together.
  • Knight Templar Parent: It turns out that she brought back the Spectres and used them to ravage the world because she was looking for Hugo (who was long dead, unbeknownst to her), and she tells Zaphkiel in a flashback that she does not care how much of the world she destroys in her desperate search for her dear boy.
My child is lost, cold and alone out there in the world. If I must burn the lands to find him, then I will do so!
  • Pre-Final Boss: She is the last boss fought just before the various final bosses awaiting at the top of the Tower.
  • Reforged into a Minion: She started out as the one commanding the Spectres to wreck the new world in search of Hugo. Then Abram killed her and used the corruption to bring her back as an unwilling servant, forced to command the Spectres into spreading his corruption.
  • Tragic Villain: Upon her revival, she only started destroying the new world with her Spectre army because she went insane from the death of Hugo and refused to accept that he was gone, with Zaphkiel doing nothing to tell her the horrible truth. Then by the time you fight her in the Tower, she has realized the truth and wants to stop, but she has been Reforged into a Minion by Abram and is unable to stop on her own.

    High Priest
The leader of God's church who spreads the word of God.
  • The Dragon: To Zaphkiel, as he runs his church, directs his followers, and does his best to guide the Batter in helping his boss.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The High Priest is only fought as a boss in the Blue route if you start giving the Grand objects to the Serpent. He essentially tells this to the player before you fight him.

    Lugosi
The leader of a cult worshipping the Serpent. He stands outside the church in the City, preaching the word of the Serpent and urging the Batter to turn against the church.
  • The Dragon: To Abram, as he runs his cult and tries to get the batter to help spread the corruption.
  • Route Boss: You only fight him in the Red route just before accessing the Tower.

    Sugar
A strange girl who lies in the restored Zone 0.
  • Route Boss: You only get the chance to fight her in her uncorrupted form if you saved the Judge from Adam. However, you do fight her corrupted self in the Outside Tower.

The Switch

The final boss of the White endings. It is the Switch that turns the world ON and OFF, now afflicted with the corruption.

  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: The other final bosses are some form of Abram and/or Zaphkiel, the Big Bad Ensemble. This thing has very little foreshadowing to even being alive before it is fought as the final boss of the White endings.
