All of the characters in general

     All Characters in General
  • Anthropomorphic Food: All of the characters are anthropomorphic food items, mostly ones that are popular in India.
  • Cephalothorax: While there are a few characters that have more humanoid-looking bodies, most of them are nearly unchanged from the appearance of the original food items but with human appendages attached to them, giving the impression that they're just a head with arms and legs. Of the four main characters, Samosa, Dhokla, and Vada fall under this category.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": All the samosas are named "[x] Samosa", including Simple Samosa himself. Almost every other food character is named after whatever food they are as well, with Dhokla, Jalebi, Vada, and Cham Cham being only a small handful of examples.
  • Four-Fingered Hands: Every character that has hands has four fingers.
  • Non-Mammalian Hair: Most of the characters with hair count for this trope, with everyone being Anthropomorphic Food and all.
  • The Noseless: Zig-zagged depending on the character. Of the main four, only Jalebi has a visible nose (and even then, it's only visible when she's seen at a side view).
  • Race-Name Basis: Many of the characters are named after their type of food, and Simple is referred to by his last name Samosa, which is under the same "food = name" rule.
  • Species Surname: For a given value of "species", anyway, since they're foods. Every samosa character's last name is Samosa, including the main character of the show; besides that, Dhokla's full name is G.K. Dhokle, and Vada's full name is Venkata Narasihma Raji Vadu.
  • Sphere Eyes: Most characters have spherical eyes that overlap with each other.
  • Tooth Strip: All of the characters have undivided strips of teeth.

The Chatpata Four

    As a Whole
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/samosafriends.PNG
From left to right: Jalebi, Samosa, Dhokla, Vada.
  • Free-Range Children: All four of them often wander off to wherever completely by themselves. In some cases, they have explored locations that are far away from Chatpata Nagar such as a snowy mountain, a junkyard, and France, all without catching the concerns of any older citizens.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Samosa is Chloeric; he's the heroic leader of the group.
    • Dhokla is Phlegmatic; he's calm, careful, and he's more comfortable doing what's right.
    • Jalebi is Melancholic; the antics of the others easily irritate her.
    • Vada is Sanguine; he states himself to have the "biggest heart" of the group in the theme song and is hyperactive.
  • The Notable Numeral: Certain official episode descriptions collectively refer to them as the "Chatpata Four".
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Samosa wears red shorts, Vada wears blue shoes, Dhokla wears blue shorts and shoes, and Jalebi wears jewelry (earrings) and a pink skirt and has noticeable eyelashes.
  • Vague Age: None of their ages are specified. The most that is confirmed is that Vada is the youngest of the group, according to his official bio; this is demonstrated in-series by him not latching on to Samosa's stories being fictional and not being tall enough to go on carnival rides while his friends are. As far as Samosa, Dhokla, and Jalebi are concerned, it's safe to assume that they could be anywhere from 8 to 12 years old.

    Simple Samosa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/simplesamosahimself.PNG
"Didn't I tell you, guys? There is nothing better than a Simple Samosa!"

The main character of the show. He is an enthusiastic samosa who is willing to take on any challenge that appears in Chatpata Nagar, and also tends to tell exaggerated stories to his friends.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Samosa's #1 fan, Vada, often calls him by the nickname "Samosa-Bro".
  • Alliterative Name: His full name is Simple Samosa, which repeats the letter "S".
  • Berserk Button: If the episode "Sumo Momo" is any indication, cracking the tip on the top of his head is a very good way to incur his wrath.
  • Callousness Towards Emergency: While he's willing to help people, there are instances where he doesn't care. In "Sumo Momo", he blatantly ignores a man who has been beaten up by Sumo Momo and cheers for Sumo Momo instead, and in "Patang Hurdang", he not only doesn't save Cham Cham from flying up into the air, but is the one who causes him to do it in the first place, right after saving Vada from that fate.
  • Clueless Detective: For the brief moment he's a detective in "Tutti Frutti", he demonstrates himself to be quite awful at it. Case in point: He sees a picture of Mayor Royal Falooda and Tutti Frutti in front of a snowy mountain background, deduces that that must be the "point where it all began", and goes to a snowy mountain to find Tutti Frutti, with no victory. This contrasts with Dhokla and Jalebi's progress; they find her at a spa, a much more realistic conclusion.
  • Consummate Liar: A non-villain example. Jalebi doesn't call Samosa out on being a "bluff master" for nothing; in fact, one of his defining traits seems to be that he tells a lot of exaggerated and self-centered tales to his friends, with some of them veering into Blatant Lies territory (he claims to have defeated multiple Sumo Momos at the same time, when in reality there's only one Sumo Momo). The only person who actually believes any of Samosa's stories is Vada, who is too young to know that they're all fictitious.
  • Kid Hero: He is both the main character of the series and a kid who acts and talks like a real kid.
  • Last-Name Basis: His full name is Simple Samosa, but other characters usually refer to him as just Samosa.
  • Made of Iron: He can accumulate a lot of injuries and brush them off with no problem. Right in the first episode we see Samosa getting pummeled in all sorts of ways and accumulating only a few small bruises and a cracked tip from it.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: Maybe not siblings, but "Meethi Masi" shows he has over 100 cousins.
  • Pride: His exaggerated stories are all about himself, and he gives himself multiple awesome skills in said stories, such as the strength to defeat multiple Sumo Momos and the experience of a Kid Detective. The closest thing he has to a catch-phrase is "There is nothing better than a Simple Samosa". The show's very theme song has him praising himself as being "really cool", and he complains to his friends when they sing the "it's because I'm simple, it's because I'm really cool" line in the theme song, saying that he's the simple and really cool one. Is it safe to say that Samosa has a bit of an inflated ego problem? Yup.

    Dhokla
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/simplesamosadhokla.PNG

The "big brother" of sorts to the group, a careful but friendly dhokla. He is also very soft and increases in size like a sponge whenever he drinks a liquid.

  • Blue Is Calm: He wears blue pants and shoes and is the most subdued of Samosa's group.
  • Disembodied Eyebrows: His eyebrows are not connected to his eyes in anyway.
  • Fat Best Friend: He's one of Samosa's best friends and is big enough that going into doorways has presented a problem to him in a few episodes.
  • Gasshole: He has the highest amount of burps out of any character in the series, doing it at least four times ("Chutney Dam", "Kheer", a particularly long burp in "Dhakkad Race", and "Patang Hurdang"). He also farts at least twice, in "Maa Mooli" and "Kasturi Khushbu".
  • Plant Hair: His green hair is supposed to be coriander, which is often used to garnish dishes of dhokla. At the end of "Hair Today Gone Tomorrow", he's seen donning a multitude of different plant hair styles, including a pineapple and a venus flytrap.
  • Sizeshifter: Absorbing liquids causes him to become larger, and there doesn't seem to be any restrictions on how large he can get as he's gotten giant in some episodes.

    Jalebi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/simplesamosajalebi.PNG
"Seriously, Samosa?"

A level-headed jalebi who is wary of Samosa's tendency to tell exaggerated stories and is often the first to call him out when he tells one, but stands by him and his other friends.

  • Cheated Angle: There are several instances where she is seen from a side angle, but the giant swirl on her head still appears as it would when she is seen from the front.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Jalebi is still nice to Samosa, Dhokla, and Vada despite considering them to be annoying. Her verse in the theme song sums it up pretty nicely:
All these guys make so much noise!
What are you doing? Grow up, boys!
But we're buddies, however strange may be
    And I'm forever their Jalebi!
  • Odd Friendship: She seems to consider her friendship with Samosa, Dhokla, and Vada to be one according to the theme song, as she's the only sane girl of the group and rightfully considers the others more obnoxious in comparison (Samosa with his arrogance, Dhokla with his over-cautiousness, and Vada with his hyperactivity).
  • Pink Means Feminine: Wears a pink dress and earrings.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She's the only female out of the four main characters.
  • Women Are Wiser: She's above the boys' antics and is stated by her bio to the the most level-headed of the main characters.

    Vada
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/simplesamosavada.PNG

An excitable young vada who is Samosa's #1 fan.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: He is the youngest out of the four main characters. He's implied to be too young to tell fiction from reality, as he is the only one in the main group of characters who believes Samosa's stories at all.
  • Cannot Tell Fiction from Reality: Vada is the only character in Samosa's circle of friends who takes his exaggerated tales seriously, whereas Dhokla and Jalebi are able to tell they're not real almost right away.
  • Disembodied Eyebrows: Much like Dhokla, his eyebrows are not connected to his eyes.
  • Dreadful Musician: The episode "Cultural Programme" shows that Vada is so bad at playing the violin that it can cause car crashes.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Setting aside his blindness to Samosa's stories being fabricated, Vada genuinely thinks Samosa is the most amazing person ever born, praising his different (made-up) character traits throughout the series.
  • Keet: He's the most excitable of the Chatpata Four, and being the youngest of the gang, Vada has these traits to play him up as the cutest of the bunch.
  • Overly Long Name: His full name is Venkata Narasihma Raji Vadu.
  • Token Mini-Moe: He describes himself as having the "biggest heart" of the main characters in the theme song and is the youngest of the team.
  • Vibrant Orange: Orange-colored Vada is the most hyperactive and excitable of Samosa's gang.
  • Vocal Evolution: His English voice is higher-pitched and sounds more feminine in Season 2 compared to Season 1.

Secondary characters

    Mayor Royal Falooda
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/simplesamosamayor.PNG

A pink falooda serving as the mayor of Chatpata Nagar. He will always do anything to keep Chatpata Nagar in order, and his intentions are strong... unlike his stomach, which is reflected by the fact that he is often seen using the toilet.

  • Affectionate Nickname: He is called "Daiddy", "daddy" with an "A" and an "I", by his daughter Tutti Frutti according to her debut episode. In the original English dub, the nickname was instead "Poppsy".
  • Dreadful Musician: In "Kohra Ka Keher", his singing is so awful that it breaks the lenses of Cham Cham's glasses and has the townsfolk in the town hall trying to get away from the sound. At the end of the episode, his singing voice flat-out makes the town hall crumble.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: While he's not a member of Samosa's gang by any means, he is generally quite friendly to them, even calling on them for help finding his daughter in the episode "Tutti Frutti".
  • No Mouth: Falooda's mouth is usually obscured by his mustache, although it does become visible when he screams in several episodes.
  • Permanent Elected Official: Even in "Mayor Gaayab" where people end up attempting to become the mayor themselves when he leaves, Royal Falooda never gets fully replaced by another mayor.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Falooda, the mayor of Chatpata Nagar, works hard and has good intentions for the town. He's also widely liked by the people and usually gets along well with Samosa and his gang.

    Dr. Goti Sodawala
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sssoda.PNG
Chatpata Nagar's local doctor, who is always prepared for any medical emergency.
  • Eye Glasses: His sclerae seem to be contained within his glasses.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Perhaps it comes with the territory of being a doctor, but he has no problem removing Makkhi Makkhija from Jalebi's head in "Makkhi Makkhi!" when 90% of the town antagonize the fly.
  • The Medic: Whenever Samosa and his friends are in pain and need to heal, it often falls to Goti Sodawala to fix them up.

    Cham Cham Chakraborty
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/simplesamosachamcham.PNG

A rival to Samosa and his friends. He will do anything to land them in trouble since he wants to be the best, but he never succeeds in doing so.

  • Adaptation Deviation: To make Cham Cham work as an enemy, Simple Samosa Game splits him into multiple individuals, when there's only one Cham Cham in the show.
  • Alliterative Name: Cham Cham Chakraborty repeats the "ch" sound three times.
  • Butt-Monkey: He tends to be on the receiving end of some misfortune or other, usually after trying to do something mean to Samosa.
  • Conforming OOC Moment: Despite having a bitter hatred for Samosa, Cham Cham is seen in a few episodes watching him with interest or appearing with him with the rest of the crowd, who would be more likely to be impressed by him. "Sumo Momo", "Carnival Chaos", and "Pimple Samosa" are among the examples.
  • Foil: He acts as one to Samosa. While both characters are self-centered to some extent, Samosa means well and will help others if a situation calls for it, whereas Cham Cham is willing to (for example) work others to exhaustion, if not outright try to knowingly hurt them, on multiple occasions because he barely has any regard for them.
  • Frames of Reference: Cham Cham wears square-shaped glasses and, being Samosa's rival, is typically the show's recurring villain.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: In "Chhote Rajaji", we get to see Cham Cham's shorts, which have a heart-print pattern on them and are marked with his name.
  • Harmless Villain: Many of Cham Cham's attempts to rival Samosa in being the best are relatively tame. The one exception is in "Samosa Mama", where he gets Samosa wrongfully taken to court for supposedly committing a kidnapping and nearly gets him EATEN as a punishment for it.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: His sclerae are blue. Except Cham Cham's not that innocent, what with all the turmoil he constantly tries to cause Samosa.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Name any instance where Cham Cham tries to show Samosa he's better than him. Chances are it won't go well and Samosa will come out on top, even when Cham Cham comes close to getting him eaten for committing a kidnapping.
  • The Rival: To Samosa and his friends. His goal is to beat them at whatever, but naturally he fails at this all the time.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He seems to have no problem with Samosa being nearly punished by being eaten during the trail Cham Cham had started in "Samosa Mama", and he works everyone's butts off, including Samosa and friends, in "Mayor Gaayab".

    Amma and Appa Iddiyappam
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ssiddiyappams.PNG
Appa on the left, Amma on the right.
A duo of iddiyappams who run their own spas. They have apparently known each other for a long time; in their debut episode, "Spa Wars", they reunite and get married.
  • Couple Theme Naming: The names Appa and Amma are Indian equivalents to "papa" and "mama" respectively.
  • Happily Married: In episodes after "Spa Wars", we see Appa and Amma still married with no problems.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Later episodes have them already married. The plot twist of "Spa Wars" is that they're in love at all, due to the writers tricking you into believing they're rivals.
  • Lookalike Lovers: They have the same snow-white humanoid body and similar red and blue clothes and black hair.
  • Official Couple: Their wedding happens right in their first episode.
  • Overly Long Name: Appa's full name is quite a mouthful - Appa Samba Wada Dosa Onion Pypa Butta Masal Appam Beinda Rasam Medu Rava Bist Bele Plain Curry Kela Thali Saptam.

    Makkhi Makkhija
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/simplesamosamakkhi.PNG
A minor recurring background character, a talking fly who appears in the episode "Makkhi Makkhi" and ends up having to be removed from Jalebi's head.
