     The Protagonists
The various player characters of the stories. They all have different backstories and ages, but also share many similarities by filling the same role in each story.
  • Action Girl: Different MCs to varying levels.
    • The MC of Attack of the Dead is a straight example, being a gun-toting survivor of a zombie apocalypse.
    • The MC of Princess of the Dead even more so, having been a member of the military pre-story.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Demonic Suitors: Dante calls the MC "love" while Tavarius defaults to either "pet" or "treasure."
    • Shinigami Soul Agency: Riku calls his MC "little wisp."
    • The MC of The Rondo of Oblivion gets called Mistress by Lachlan, which can come across as this.
    • Aiden of Desires of a Dragon Prince calls his MC "puny princess," which eventually becomes this.
  • All-Loving Heroine: They are generally kind and reasonable young women who do their best in the situations they find themselves in.
  • Always Female: Largely due to the otome genre: otome is the Japanese word for maiden, so it's in the genre name for the games to feature female protagonists in stories geared to female readers, though anyone regardless of gender can enjoy them.
  • Ambiguously Absent Parent: Some of them will have or make mention of at least one parent, but it's rarer for both of MC's parents to be present in the story. Sometimes this is Hand Waved as them living on their own so their parents not being around makes more sense. Other times they get only glancing reference, if that.
  • …And That Little Girl Was Me: Most of them have a tragedy in their backstory that they end up sharing with a love interest in a bonding moment between the two.
  • Audience Surrogate: Naturally. They're basically self-inserts for the player, and often serve as the vessel through which the player experiences the story unfold. Some have more personality traits than others however.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Some of the more feisty MCs have this with at least on LI.
    • Adalricus of Demonic Suitors and his MC have this in spades, due to her being a human thrust into the world of demons and he being a demon who is half-human and has a complex about it.
    • The MC of Fated Demon Lovers and Valak. Though, this was more accurate between Valak and the original demon princess. The MC inhabiting the princess's body has a more mellow relationship with him.
    • Big time between Kyo and his MC in Feral Hearts.
    • Jinta of Forest of Destiny due to his belief that humans harm more than they help, and MC being human.
  • Break the Cutie: They rarely come out the other side unscathed by the events of the story.
  • Broken Bird: Not all of them, but a few are pretty messed up either from traumatic backstories or the events of the current plot.
  • Crush Blush: Though we can't see it, they're usually described as blushing during steamier moments in the story, or when The Tease character opens his mouth.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: The MCs of Demonic Suitors and Sins of the Everlasting Twilight.
  • Damsel in Distress: Occasionally, a noteworthy example being briefly in season two of Lullaby of Demonia.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: And what's more it's usually partly to blame for the story's present conflict.
  • Depending on the Writer: Whether the MC of a story is more passive or take charge usually depends on this.
  • Determinator: Most, if not all, of the protagonists have this trait. Usually spurred on by their desire to be with/save their love interest(s).
  • Disappeared Dad: If the protagonist has a father even mentioned, he usually doesn't stick around long in the story.
    • In Welcome to the Yokai Inn the protagonist's father leaving suddenly kicks off the plot.
    • In Desires of a Dragon Prince the MC's dad doesn't nearly as much mention as her mother, beyond his being human.
  • Dude Magnet: Considering the genre of the stories, this is a given trait they all share.
  • Family Business: A fair few are part of one in their backstories. The MCs from Forest of Destiny, Lullaby of Demonia, Welcome to the Yokai Inn, and Psychic Supernatural Boyfriend are all part of one in one way or another.
    • If you count inheriting the demonic throne as this, Demonic Suitor's protagonist counts too
  • Featureless Protagonist: No matter the story, every MC will be this, for self-insert purposes.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Another plot point frequently shared by the MCs of different stories. This comes up with Draco in Demonic Suitors, Masaki and Kyo in Feral Hearts, Midori in Forest of Destiny, Ifrit in Lullaby of Demonia, and Atsushi and Setsuna in Shinigami Soul Agency.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: Adalricus teases the MC for her stuffed animal collection in Demonic Suitors.
  • The Heart: The one responsible for bringing the party together against a common enemy, or keeping them together against internal conflict.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: They're all named by the player, and there's nothing stopping you from using the same name for each. In fact, the game developers seem to encourage this, by the default name in the text box always being, for whatever reason, "Jessica." Related to Featureless Protagonist above.
  • Heroic BSoD: The MC of The Rondo of Oblivion comes very near to one when she thinks Ezra died.
  • The Heroine: Obviously. They're the Player Character.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Ouka and her MC in Shinigami Soul Agency. Chloe and hers in Sins of the Everlasting Twilight.
  • Lady and Knight: Fated Demon Lovers's MC and Valak, Theo and MC in Sins of the Everlasting Twilight. In the former it's literal, while the latter is mostly thematic.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Several examples:
    • MC/Vual in Demonic Suitors
    • Inverted in Fated Demon Lovers with MC/Lyria. And then played straight after The Reveal.
    • MC/Lita Doll in Feral Hearts, especially after Lita reveals herself to be the Dire Protector
    • Inverted again in Lullaby of Demonia with MC/Zev, once MC starts ingratiating herself into the home of Lucifer and his sons. With Zev turning out to be an inquisitor angel bent on destroying the demonic plane, Light Is Not Good and Dark Is Not Evil come into play as well.
    • A non-villainous example with MC/Ouka in Shinigami Soul Agency. MC is The Stoic levelheaded and somewhat morose Dark Feminine to Ouka's bright and bubbly Light Feminine.
    • MC/Elise in Sins of the Everlasting Twilight once Elise is revealed to be a demon goddess.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Yokai Inn's MC runs the craft shop alongside her father. He's also an oni, making her half-oni. In Psychic Supernatural Boyfriend the MC is a powerful empath investigating the supernatural with her powers, like her parents before her. In My Ninja Destiny the MC inherits the position of leader of the ninja villages from her father. Similarly, the MC of Demonic Suitors will inherit Hell's throne from her father, Satan.
    • In a twist of this trope, the MC of Lullaby of Demonia uses the Astral Nav to hop dimensions, just like Lucifer's first wife Rosaria, making it a case of Like Parent-in-Law, Like Child-in-Law if she pursues Alastor.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: They often become this for certain LIs. Sins Noel and Demonia's Valec are standout examples.
  • Magnetic Hero: Each one has at least two, and up to four, possible love interests and many have friends in other NPCs.
  • Meet Cute: Mostly in the Slice of Life genre stories, but a few other examples include meeting Ichiro in Psychic Supernatural Boyfriend, Hisui in The Lost Fate of the Oni, and Taiki in Feral Hearts.
    • The MC being hit by Caden's car in In Between Love & Death could be seen as an extreme example of this.
  • Morality Pet: To Tavarius in Demonic Suitors, pretty much all the LIs in Fated, Senri in Lost Fate of the Oni, Valec in Lullaby etc. If a story has demons or yokai in it in some way chances are this trope will come into play.
  • Nerves of Steel: Pretty much every one of these ladies needs to have them to deal with the plot.
  • Nice Girl: Barring some BST or snark, the protagonists are generally all kind young women at heart.
  • Office Lady: The MCs of Feral Hearts, Forest of Destiny, Psychic Supernatural Boyfriend, and Shinigami Soul Agency to varying levels.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: More like Ordinary College Student, but some younger protagonists, including those of Demigods of Destiny and Fated Demon Lovers, who start out as this trope.
  • Paranormal Investigation: Most obviously in Psychic Supernatural Boyfriend. Some elements are at play in Sins of the Everlasting Twilight, Shinigami Soul Agency, and Feral Hearts as well.
  • Passing the Torch:
    • Demonic Suitors: The MC will inherit the demon throne from her father
    • Feral Hearts: The MC becomes the wolves' Protector and their agent after her boss, Honey, ends up hospitalized. Also she's from an ancient lineage of Protectors known for their loyalty, making this an ancestral torch-passing.
    • Forest of Destiny: MC becomes the Forest Guardian after saving the previous from a trap
    • Lullaby of Demonia: MC inherits the Astral Nav and its properties indirectly from Rosaria, after the Nav chooses her. If she gets engaged to Alastor she'll also inherit the throne along with him.
    • My Ninja Destiny: MC becomes the head of the ninja villages after her estranged father passes away
    • Psychic Supernatural Boyfriend: MC has the same powers and profession as her parents
  • Player Character: They all serve this role in every story, being the POV character named by the player in the beginning.
  • Plucky Girl: No matter what the dilemma, or the story setting, she's determined to face it head on.
  • A Protagonist Shall Lead Them: The MC of Lullaby of Demonia can get engaged to Alastor after he becomes emperor of the Demonic Astral Plane, making her its future empress.
    • In Desires of a Dragon Prince the MC becomes the Queen of the Water Dragons, a clan that she must restore to its former glory.
  • Pseudo-Romantic Friendship: Haru and the MC of The Lost Fate of the Oni. Haru ends up an Unlucky Childhood Friend in every route even including the one where the MC chooses to live with him, as it's written to be more familial than romantic.
  • Psychic Powers: Almost a given, usually in the Fantasy/Supernatural stories.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Another frequently-appearing trope across multiple stories:
    • Attack of the Dead: Depending on the dialogue you choose, the MC and Zero can be either this or Birds of a Feather
    • Desires of a Dragon Prince: MC and Aiden
    • Everlasting Alchemists: MC and Allen, at least at first.
    • Fated Demon Lovers: MC with both Valak and Kei, especially since she's actually a completely different person from the demon princess whose body she now inhabits.
    • Feral Hearts: MC and Kyo
    • Forest of Destiny: MC and Jinta
    • Shinigami Soul Agency: An interesting case where the MC is the calm and professional blue to Riku's flirtatious and teasing red, but the persistent and determined red to Setsuna's cold and stoic blue.
    • Sins of the Everlasting Twilight: MC and Zarek
    • Soul of Yokai: Obvious puns aside, the MC is the blue oni to Hayato's - a half-oni with a red color scheme - red oni.
  • Rescue Romance: Another fairly frequent trope across stories: Masaki, Hisui, and Setsuna are major offenders of this in their respective stories.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Adalricus, Valak, Kyo, Malthus, Yuni, Setsuna, and Zarek with their respective protagonists.
  • Ship Tease: The protagonists have these moments with each of their Love Interests, and even a few that aren't.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Usually the MC with her chosen lover during said lover's ending.
  • The Stoic: The MC of Shinigami Soul Agency is explicitly stated to start out as one, which is quickly revealed to be a defense mechanism. She grows out of this as the story progresses.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Any option to romance a villain for their redemption arc usually involves a truckload of this.
    • Demonic Suitors: Tavarius is more of a Disc-One Final Boss than the true Big Bad, but romancing him still has elements of this.
    • Desires of a Dragon Prince: Pursuing Dorcha, who has at least ordered his troops to do horrible things, if he didn't outright do it himself. Notably, his ending is the only one of the four where he never confesses outright to the MC, and even she treats it more as a chance for him to redeem himself by making amends through his marriage to her and advising her on matters relating to the human/dragon power imbalance.
    • Fated Demon Lovers: Being this is pretty much a plot point, as the MC is supposed to be part of a group of villains with the three love interests, and making them see a different point of view is one of the main points of the story.
    • Forest of Destiny: Ren's route, being the Forest Protector most prejudiced against humans and willing to stoop low to get revenge.
    • Kamisama: Spirits of the Shrine: Akanojaku is the demon of the town's legends, and the fourth romance option.
    • Lullaby of Demonia: Again, this is pretty much a plot point, as the MC grows to care for the demon princes and Lucifer himself becomes something of a father figure to her. Played straighter if the player chooses Valec since he's the figurehead of the rebellion, though he turns out to be more of a pawn himself than he realizes. Of course, once the inquisitor angels start showing up, things become a little less black and white.
    • Shinigami Soul Agency: Enma in his own five-chapter spinoff. The story basically runs on this.
  • Took a Level in Badass: The MC of Demonic Suitors comes into her own as Satan's daughter and the future queen of hell, the MC of Desires of a Dragon Prince becomes the Queen of the Water Dragons and a capable ruler, the MC of Feral Hearts comes into her own as a Protector and an agent, the MC of Lullaby of Demonia can become the future demonic empress as well as an important figure in the Demonic Astral Plane, and the MC of Shinigami Soul Agency becomes an ass-kicking Shinigami.
  • Trauma Button: The MC of Shinigami Soul Agency has frequent flashbacks to her traumatic past brought on by fire and returning to her hometown where it happened.
  • The Voiceless: By virtue of being a protagonist character in an app with very minimal voice acting.
  • Vague Age: They rarely have given numerical ages, usually being described as some level of student or twentysomething for the sake of self-insert.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: The MC of Demonic Suitors learns to shapeshift while attending Anathema Academy.
  • Will Not Be a Victim: Usually the conclusion they come to later in the stories, after having had several chapters of tension and drama happen to them. When the MC decides she won't be one is usually when they start kicking some ass of their own.
  • The Woobie: Some more than others, but most of them come from tragic circumstances.
    • The protagonist of In Between Love & Death. Before she dies and gets a second chance at life, virtually nothing and no one has been kind to her.
  • Workaholic: Whether they have established careers or are dedicated students, the protagonists generally fall under this category more often than not.
