Logan Family

    Higan

Higan/Joe Logan

Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda (Japanese), Jeremy Gee (Higan), Gabriel Regojo (Logan) (English)

The main character. He's a ninja who defected from the clan years prior alongside his wife Mari to live a quiet life, only for their old clan to take it away from them. Now he's driven by nothing but revenge against his own clan.

  • Casting a Shadow: Joe appears to breathe some kind of shadow mass that he can use to smokescreen himself and even create additional arms.
  • Cool Mask: He wears a red oni mask to cover his lower face.
  • Crusading Widower: Losing his family makes him abandon his once peaceful life and launch a one-man war against the clan who betrayed them.
  • Disney Death: Joe was seemingly killed and ends up at the morgue but wakes up there. His wife and kid weren't so lucky though. Episode 6 reveals that it was Emma who ensured he survived using her ninja technique.
  • Heroic BSoD: Seeing his wife and son dead at the morgue while he miraculously managed to survive causes Higan to snap.
  • Hidden Depths: Episode 3 shows Higan doesn't drink alcohol and that he's a car enthusiast.
  • In the Hood: He wears a hoodie to go unnoticed.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: At the end of episode 6, thanks to Emma's help, he obtains his own Gosoku suit called Kamui.
  • Multiarmed And Dangerous: He can sprout several pairs of arms to match his enemies.
  • One-Man Army: Even by ninja standards, he's capable of slaughtering dozens of enemies with relative ease.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: He has no compunctions about giving his enemies a Cold-Blooded Torture before killing them.
  • Powered Armor: Aska/Emma grants him the Kamui to stand a fighting chance against all the elite guards working for Yamaji.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He has red eyes and is not someone you want as an enemy.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Joe/Higan just wanted to live a peaceful life with his family, but his past caught up to them and murdered his family. He vows to kill every last one of the ninjas.
  • The Teetotaler: He doesn't drink alcohol, instead preferring energy drinks. When he gives some to Mike, the latter coughs in surprise, thinking Joe had given him alcohol instead.

    Mari

Mari/Sara Logan

Voiced by: Yuriko Hino (Japanese), Christie Gaudry (Mari), Chaney Moore (Sara) (English)

Higan's wife. She's a former ninja who also left the clan to live a quiet life, only for clan assassins to murder her and their son.

  • Better to Die than Be Killed: When she was unable to murder a mother and a child, the shame from failing the mission caused her to attempt this, but Joe stopped her blade with his own hand and declared his love for her.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: It was through her that the people persecuted by the ninja clan were able to disguise themselves through face-changing camouflage technology that she herself developed when Yamaji caused a revolution within the group.
  • Good Is Not Soft: She might have been a kind and caring person, but she was still a ninja who would ruthlessly kill her mission targets. Except for the one time she was caught off-guard trying to murder a mother and her child, which nearly drove her to kill herself out of shame for flinching and putting the mission in jeopardy.
  • Happily Married: Everything indicated she and Higan were very happy together.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her death is what drives Higan to seek revenge against the clan they once served.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: She was Aska/Emma's mentor during her days in the ninja clan, but Mari was killed.
  • Posthumous Character: Far more is known about her after her death than when she's alive.
  • Pregnant Badass: She had been pregnant with Ren during her last days as a ninja, and she was still a force to reckon with.
  • Retired Badass: Like her husband, she was a former ninja, and she fought with everything she got to defend her family.
  • Secret Art: She has a skill that allows her to temporarily "kill" a target before they can wake up later as if nothing happened. Against the ninja clan's code, she secretly passes down her skill to Aska, who uses it herself on Joe during the night of the raid of his home so he's able to survive an apparent death.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: She had a profound good influence on many characters: Joe fell for her and raised a son with her, and Zai and Aska considered her a dear friend/mentor who steered them to do right in their moments of need, and not to mention that she looked after the other original members of the ninja clan and helped them out in defecting while hiding their identities.

    Ren

Ren/Kyle Logan

Voiced by: Arata Kimura (Japanese), Noble Hutchinson (English)

The son of Higan and Mari, who was murdered alongside his mother by the clan's assassins.

  • Death of a Child: Kyle/Ren is killed by his parents' former clan when they raid their house.
  • Died on Their Birthday: Kyle's birthday is the same day his family is caught and attacked by the ninja clan, which ends with him and his mother dead.
  • Satellite Character: In contrast to Mari, his role is mostly defined by his importance to his parents. On the other hand, Mari had planned to have Zai meet him so he could learn that there was always a future for them to take.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: His unmasked appearance shows he had his father's red eyes and his mother's brown hair.

FBI

    Mike Moriss

Mike Moriss

Voiced by: Atsushi Ono (Japanese), Shawn Hamilton (English)

A rough FBI agent who becomes determined to solve the mystery of the ninja murders.

  • Alliterative Name: Mike Moriss.
  • Enemy Mine: He agrees to work with Higan to bring down AUZA, but tells him he'll arrest him once all is said and done.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He had no idea Emma was also a ninja.
  • My Greatest Failure: He was unable to be by his daughter's side when she passed away unexpectedly while he was busy at work, which led to his wife cutting ties with him, thinking that she'd be able to tolerate his lack of absence at home.
  • Old Cop, Young Cop: He's the Old Cop to Emma's Young Cop.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Episode 4 reveals his daughter was killed by a drunk driver, leading to his marriage to collapse. To make things even harsher, he saw Emma as a second chance for him to have another daughter, but she ended up getting killed after he believed he'd die first before she did.
  • Red Herring: In Episode 9, Mike tells Joe to please look after Emma should something happen to him, raising a death flag on himself. To his horror, Emma ends up dying instead in an explosion set by Joseph through Big D's Gosuku.
  • The Team Normal: Emma's real identity means he's the only one on the heroes' side who's genuinely unaffiliated with the ninja world prior to meeting Joe. Accordingly, he's practically a Non-Action Guy against the highly-skilled ninja assailants, even the ones not decked out in Powered Armor, though he can defend himself well against the more mundane gun-wielding mercenaries under AUZA's employ.

    Emma Samanda

Emma Samanda/Aska

Voiced by: Yuki Wakai (Japanese), Luci Christian (English)

An FBI agent and partner of Mike Moriss who's always been fascinated by ninjas.

  • Ascended Fangirl: She's always been fascinated by ninja, so working with one to bring down an Ancient Conspiracy is a dream for her. Then again, this was just a little ruse since she is a ninja anyway.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: When her duel against Mari ended up in defeat, Mari stopped her from killing herself because she saw Aska as a family member.
  • Connected All Along: She reveals to Higan in her "final" message that Mari saved her life years prior and they remained in contact up until the latter's death.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: When she was young, she was caught in an accident that left her face disfigured. Her parents abandoned her, unable to handle looking at her face. She was then scouted out by the ninja clan and was trained as another clan member wearing a mask to hide her heavily scarred face, until she was mentored by Mari and started to give her a purpose in life.
  • Disney Death: Lil seemingly fries her alive in her suit, but she turns up fine in Episode 7. Unfortunately, she's killed in an explosion by Big D's exploding Gosuku in Episode 9.
  • Fair Cop: She's a pretty FBI agent.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She gives Mike one last smile before she's incinerated alive by Big D's exploding Gosuku suit.
  • Hackette: In contrast to Mike's old fashioned way of doing things, Emma likes to use her tech skills to find clues, although even she notices AUZA's online defenses are nigh-impenetrable. She even incorporates hacking into her fighting style as Aska.
  • Old Cop, Young Cop: The Young Cop to Mike's Old Cop.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Mike sees her as a second daughter to him after losing his blood daughter. Then he ends up losing Aska too.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity: Thanks to Mari's mentoring and looking out after her, Aska was able to embrace living as more than just a ninja drone.
  • Secret Art: She uses Mari's kill skill on Joe during the raid of his home so he's able to survive being overwhelmed by the ninja clan's hitmen.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: Emma is one of the aliases Aska of the clan uses.
  • The Unreveal: She's been using Mari's face-hiding camouflage for a long while and goes down when she's fatally injured by Big D's exploding Gosuku. But as all other times, we don't see her eyes beyond her long purple hair and scarred face.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's hard to talk about her with all the revelations of episode 6 concerning her.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Even with her Gosuku, it's clear that Emma's strong suit is trickery and hacking, not brute force like Lil or Dilly.

AUZA

    Yamaji

Yamaji

Voiced by: Kazuhiro Yamaji (Japanese), Luis Galindo (English)

The head of the ninja clan that controls AUZA from the shadows and the one hunting down Higan.

  • Beard of Evil: He has a full beard and is a ruthless chieftain who will kill anyone in his path who either defects or gets in the way of his plans.
  • Big Bad: He's the head of the ninja clan and the one hunting down Higan.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: He was already holding his own against Dilly with only his ninja skills, but as soon as he puts on his perfected Gusoku gear Mikado, it's a Curb-Stomp Battle for Dilly.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Specifically, his right eye is always closed. He finally opens it at the end of episode 12, revealing that it has two pupils instead of one.
  • Hypocrite: Upon the death of the previous head of the clan, he quickly changed the clan into inviting outsiders (AUZA) to learn their secrets and expand the clan's reach. He was called out for this for breaking the ninja code by former ninjas in the clan, which led to them deserting the group as a means to keep the original ninja clan teachings alive. They only pull their escape off when Mari gave them the means to disguise themselves using her camouflage technology.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: After cutting in half two ninja who opposed his takeover, he proceeded to step and kick their corpses in front of the other future defectors.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: He dresses either in a simple Yukata or in fancy green suit.
  • Mind over Matter: Episode 4 shows he can use telekinesis to almost choke Lil to death.
  • Orcus on His Throne: He hasn't faced Higan directly and prefers to let his minions do the work for him. He even explicitly forbids Zai from going after his former comrade.
  • Sell-Out: If he had any genuine concerns about the long-term survival of the ninja ways, he lost credibility for it, since his answer is to train foreign mercenaries and become an international syndicate, replacing the clan's original identity as Japan's protectors in the process.
  • Tautological Templar: Since he's the clan head, anything he says is good for the clan, even if the influx of foreign money and men has filtered out all the discipline and tradition, reducing the original clan to an army of high-tech thugs.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He clearly hates having to deal with Joseph and his carelessness. He also shows contempt for Lil's depravity.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: His one visible eye is golden, signifying his cunning and underhanded methods to get what he wants.

    Joseph

Joseph Evans

Voiced by: Tatsumaru Tachibana (Japanese), Scott Gibbs (English)

An executive of AUZA partnered with Yamaji as the public face of their organization.

  • Book Dumb: He's not very smart when it comes to ninja ways that he once complained loudly at Yamaji that he'll make his group commit Seppuku if they don't get their act together on taking Joe down. After Joseph leaves, Yamaji quickly notes that Joseph is confusing ninjas with samurai.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He's the executive of a MegaCorp teaming up with a ninja clan to take over the world.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Unsurprisingly, he tries to kill Yamaji once he thinks he's no longer useful for him, only for Yamaji to calmly turn the tide and go kill Joseph instead.
  • The Face: The public face of AUZA who's not a ninja but provides the money and resources for the clan.
  • For Science!: He mentions obtaining new data is everything to him, which is why he goes against Yamaji's orders.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: He wears glasses and he clearly has no moral compunctions using his company to help Yamaji take over the world.
  • Man Behind the Man: Invoked. He believes himself to be this to Yamaji, often trying to impose his authority on him. Very tellingly, Joseph often flinches when Yamaji starts to get annoyed by him.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: His excitable, cheerful demeanor is just him on the good days. Any other time, he's an impulsive, spoiled brat who throws tantrums when people disobey him and outright declares that the world is a giant game that exists to entertain him, and him only. Him using a game controller to blow up Big D's Gosoku gear remotely is a pretty apt metaphor for how he acts.
  • Tech Bro: A straight example as a young popular innovator who craves adoration and lacks empathy.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He doesn't like taking orders from Yamaji and he's more interested in getting data for his prototypes than keeping the ninja activities hidden.
  • Villainous Breakdown: As soon as his plans suffer setbacks, he starts cursing and throwing temper tantrums, showing he's a Psychopathic Manchild.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: In episode 11, he tries to do this to Yamaji when he realizes he's using his tech behind his back to create his own suits, only for Yamaji to pull this on him instead, slaughtering most of his employees and mercenaries.

    Zai

Zai

Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura (Japanese), James Marler (English)

A ninja of the clan known as the Reaper, who was once partners with Higan and Mari.

  • Badass in a Nice Suit: A Master Swordsman who's dressed in a suit.
  • Cool Mask: Like Higan, he wears an oni mask to cover his lower face, only his is black. It hides the scarring given to him by the elders for letting Higan and Mari go.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His parents abandoned him since he can remember them, and he was subjected to child slavery being abused by rotten adults until Yamaji's group came and "saved" him from his slavery.
  • The Dragon: Unlike the arrogant and insubordinate Joseph, Yamaji genuinely sees Zai as his most reliable enforcer.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his cold demeanor and rude attitude, Mari could tell that there was a sliver of kindness in him just because he has a soft spot for crows.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: In order to match Higan's Kamui, Joseph gives him his own Powered Armor, though both lose their Gosuku suits midway through the match and opt to use their innate skills.
  • Might Makes Right: A belief he's held since he was a child, convinced that one can only trust in their own strength.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: His one visible eye is completely white, no pupils or irises.
  • Pet the Dog: He always had a soft spot for crows, since they were the ones who fed him when he was a starving, abandoned child.
  • Raised by Wolves: Ever since he was abandoned, crows somehow looked after him, and he keeps a strong connection to them.
  • Red Baron: The Reaper.
  • Scars Are Forever: The right half of his face was scarred by his superiors when they punished him for not killing Joe and Mari when they left.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Well, "friends" may be too hard, but Joe/Higan and Sara/Mari were comrades with Zai before their desertion. He was genuinely hurt when they left after swearing they would always have each other's backs.

    Lil

Lil

Voiced by: Setsuji Satou (Japanese), Brandon Hearnsberger (English)

A depraved member of the clan.

  • Asshole Victim: No one in the clan really cares he got brutally killed by Higan, only talking about how his decapitated head was used to send a message.
  • Blood Knight: The guy gets off from combat and the only reason he joined the clan was to fight and kill his opponents.
  • Breath Weapon: His Powered Armor comes with a beam weapon from its mouth.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Higan promises a slow, horrible death to Lil, and follows through off-screen. The remains of Lil's head are returned to AUZA's inner circle as a warning, and it isn't pretty to look at. It may also count as Irony since it would be expected to some viewers that he would be killed by decapitation due to his huge head on his dwarfish body.
  • Depraved Dwarf: He's a man with dwarfism and everything he says oozes sleaziness.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Yamaji, Joseph, and Dilly only seem to tolerate him for his skill, but find him repulsive to be around.
  • Interplay of Sex and Violence: He clearly has a different interpretation of what the "wet" in "wetworks" means, as he treats his fights with a perverse, sexual thrill. Once he sets his eyes on Higan, he seems equally eager to both molest and kill him.
  • Mister Big: He's a midget but his Powered Armor is the tallest among the four guards.
  • Taking You with Me: Attempted when Higan finally pins him down, and tries to blow up his wrecked Gosoku suit to kill them both. Higan not only survives, but keeps him alive to carry out a proper death sentence.

    Dilly

Dilly

Voiced by: Romi Park (Japanese), Elissa Cuellar (English)

The bodyguard of Joseph.

  • Bait-and-Switch: When she's confronted by Yamaji while she's body guarding Joseph and Yamaji seemingly orders her to stop resisting, she apologizes to Joseph and tosses him upside-down through the window on the high floor...before a helicopter rises up and shows Joseph grabbing onto a rope to escape.
  • Bodyguard Babes: She's the bodyguard of Joseph and is skilled enough to sit at the clan's meetings.
  • Dreadlock Warrior: Her hair is arranged in dreadlocks and is a skilled fighter. Even her Powered Armor has some designs that bring to mind dreadlocks.
  • Evil Virtues: Loyalty. She's completely devoted to Joseph, either as a bodyguard or mistress. This extends even to going against Yamaji to protect him.
  • Exact Words: She was told by Yamaji to body guard Joseph. She decides to stick to this order even after Yamaji is trying to kill Joseph.
  • Foil: To Joseph. Behind closed doors, he's a Psychopathic Manchild, short(er than her), and blond. Dilly is The Stoic, tall, and black.
  • Human Pincushion: Yamaji finishes her off by impaling her with several blades.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: When Joseph out of reflex shoots through her hand, she doesn't even react.
  • The Mistress: Episode 9 heavily indicates she's Joseph's mistress too.
  • The Stoic: She hardly ever emotes and is always calm. Not even an uprising by her own boss is enough to make her react emotionally, going up against her own boss, or even tossing Joseph across a window.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Thought not interested in the romantic implication, Yamaji wonders why Dilly is into Joseph. It's because he allowed her to start thinking and give her own opinions regarding his plans, which made her happy to move out of the old ninja way of being nothing but just a shadow.

    Big D

Big D

Voiced by: Kosuke Sakaki (Japanese), Joe P. (English)

A member of the clan who likes to keep his do.
  • Armless Biped: His Powered Armor doesn't have arms and he always has his legs crossed unless he's fighting, instead he mostly floats in the air.
  • Code of Honor: Unlike his comrades, he's a fair fighter who won't kill a Worthy Opponent if they can't properly fight, and he can even Face Death with Dignity. It's only better exemplified when he's defeated and fatally injured in his second fight against Joe, but then he complains out loud when his Gosuku is rigged to explode by Joseph, which ends up taking Aska's life.
  • Cool Shades: He wears some green-tinted shades. He's finally seen without them in episode 7.
  • The Dandy: His first scene shows he cares too much about his new do. He even prefers to fight in an elegant way.
  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: He recognizes Higan as a true warrior and wants to beat him fair and square.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: When not fighting with his legs, he lets the two centipede projections to attack his enemies.
  • Villain's Dying Grace: Realizing Joseph has set his suit to explode, he uses his only centipede projection to protect Higan from the blaze.

    Jason Cardenas

Jason Cardenas

Voiced by: Takashi Nagasako (Japanese), Joe Daniels (English)

A former disgruntled AUZA employee who was fired and his research taken.

  • Headbutting Heroes: Despite being protected by Mike, Jason often butts heads with him, complaining that Mike doesn't do enough to keep him safe.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He tries to be this to AUZA for demeaning his work, but his anger issues make the team unsure if he's qualified to hack AUZA's servers. At the very least, he can pull his weight.
  • Nerd Glasses: He wears some thick square-rimmed glasses.
  • Non-Action Guy: He's a hacker, not a fighter.
  • Playful Hacker: While he's not as good as Emma, he's a pretty skilled hacker out to get payback on AUZA for firing him.
  • Pet the Dog: He grows to respect Emma's hacking skills during their brief time together. He even tears up during her funeral.
