Pretty Cures

    Shika Morikawa (Cure Petal)

Shika Morikawa (Cure Petal)

The student council president of Kiramori Private Academy, who excels in sports and academics alike. She has a strict, high-achieving personality and is seen as cold and intimidating by many. However, she is truly a caring girl, which gradually becomes more apparent as she begins allowing herself to open up to others again.

  • Academic Athlete: Earns consistently high marks at school and excels at sports, especially tennis
  • Barrier Warrior: Specializes in protective flower-shaped shields as Cure Petal.
  • Broken Ace: Shika is calm, mature, academically and athletically gifted… and also terribly lonely and under a tremendous amount of stress. She is aware of this and decides to make a change early on.
  • Character Catchphrase: "I can't leave this alone!" or variations thereof.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: While both Shika and Hiroko are intelligent brunettes who act as their team's leaders, they have several marked differences. Shika is considerably more emotionally guarded and strict than her predecessor, an established part of the student body where Hiroko was a transfer student, and out to herself and in a relationship from the jump, while Hiroko took some time to get to either point. Their theme colors contrast too, with Hiroko wearing blue, while Shika wears pink.
  • Meaningful Name: Shika means "deer", fitting for a girl with a deer fairy for a partner, while Morikawa means "forest river".
  • Petal Power: Controls flowers as Cure Petal.
  • Pink Heroine: Clad head to toe in pink as a Cure, with her hair even turning pink once transformed.
  • Student Council President: Acts in this capacity for her high school. This is her second year in the position.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Despite her strict and cold bearing, she is a deeply compassionate person who strives to do the right thing when it comes down to it. Her catchphrase says it all.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Shika was once a very cheerful and friendly girl but has become much colder in the present day. She slowly begins to warm up again as the story progresses.

    Ai Yukimura (Cure Glacier)

Ai Yukimura (Cure Glacier)

The captain of the ice hockey team and Shika’s estranged childhood friend. Her family manages a locally famous ramen shop. She is a dependable and tomboyish older sister type who gives great hugs and is very popular with girls. She is usually very calm and easy-going but can be fiery when provoked.

  • An Ice Person: Controls ice as Cure Glacier.
  • Bifauxnen: Ai is androgynous in appearance and can easily pass for a pretty boy in the right attire. Her uniform as Cure Glacier is even inspired by ouji lolita.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Ai is incredibly protective of her younger siblings, feels a strong sense of responsibility towards them, and takes it hard when they get hurt.
  • Childhood Friends: Was this with Shika before they fell out of contact as kids. They start reconnecting after becoming Cures together.
  • Cool Big Sis: Her fairy partner sees her as this, and she strives to fill this role towards her four siblings.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Ai is wildly popular with the female student body and is shown to have an absurd number of love letters in her shoe locker at one point. She clearly enjoys the attention.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is written with the character for "indigo", while her surname means "snow village".
  • Team Mom: Has a mature, level-headed personality and can always be counted on to provide her teammates with a shoulder to cry on.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to her close friend Ayaka's girly girl.

    Teruko Hidaka (Cure Helios)

Teruko Hidaka (Cure Helios)

A girl whose family manages a well-known ryokan. She is a sporty and upbeat class clown who is ready with a bad pun for every occasion. She is much more insecure than she usually lets on, especially when it comes to her personal image.

  • Boyish Short Hair: Has short and messy orange hair in civilian form.
  • Class Clown: The resident jokester of Shika’s homeroom class, with a bad pun or a cheesy joke for every occasion.
  • Genki Girl: Almost always bursting with energy.
  • Girliness Upgrade: While Teruko’s civilian form is tomboyish, her Cure Helios alter ego is very frilly and feminine. She wants to be more feminine as a civilian as well, but is too insecure to act on this desire at first.
  • In-Series Nickname: A few of her friends refer to her as 'Teruru'.
  • Meaningful Name: Teruko means "bright child", while Hidaka means "high sun".
  • Playing with Fire: Controls fire as Cure Helios.
  • Pungeon Master: Nobody loves a good pun as much as Teruko does. Nobody.
  • Sad Clown: Uses humor as a deflection mechanism for her poor self-esteem.
  • Trans Tribulations: Teruko is a trans girl, and while people certainly treat her as a girl, members of her friend circle aren't used to her presenting more femininely or otherwise asserting herself as anything more than "just one of the guys". This just feeds into her already low self esteem.

    Ayaka Oozora (Cure Zephyr)

Ayaka Oozora (Cure Zephyr)

A cheerleader and the richest girl in school. Her father is a well-known environmental attorney, and she wants to follow in his footsteps. She is intelligent, personable, and quite shrewd, with a talent for acting. She is also very fashionable and loves making accessories.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Ai always refers to her as "Aya".
  • Blow You Away: Controls wind as Cure Zephyr.
  • Class Princess: Ayaka clearly hasn't let her high level of wealth or popularity among her classmates go to her head. She's established as being a very approachable and friendly girl early on, and while she struggles with negative thoughts and impulses, she refuses to act on them.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has blond hair in both civilian and Cure form and is a genuinely kind person, even if she struggles to see herself as such.
  • Lack of Empathy: Ayaka has struggled with low empathy from a young age and is painfully aware of it, to the point of initially believing it disqualifies her from becoming a Cure. It doesn't, and she is portrayed as an unambiguously heroic character.
  • Meaningful Name: Her given name means "colorful mist" while her surname means "big sky".
  • The Ojou: The wealthiest girl in school, who is regarded as a princess-like figure by many of her classmates. To top it off, she sports a hime lolita inspired outfit as Cure Zephyr.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to her close friend Ai's tomboy.
  • Wind Is Green: Wind-elemental, with green as her image color.

Fairy Partners

    Crocus

Crocus

Shika’s partner, a deer fairy who bears the Terra Heart. She is fourteen years old and acts as a supportive little sister to her partner. She is cheerful, excitable, and driven mainly by emotion. She admires the legendary fairy heroine Selene and wants to follow in her footsteps.

  • Barrier Warrior: Can create shields like her partner, although hers are much weaker.
  • Genki Girl: Much closer in personality to the archetypal pink leader than her more subdued partner, including the upbeat and chipper personality.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Carries a torch for Selene and aspires to be just like her.

    Flurry

Flurry

Ai’s partner, a harp seal fairy who bears the Aqua Heart. He is ten years old and sees his partner as a cool older sister. He is very shy and anxious, often worrying about his worth as a partner or his ability to keep up with his fellow fairies. He dreams of becoming more confident.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: The youngest of the group, who all treat him as their baby brother.
  • Shrinking Violet: Very shy and timid, to the point of feeling unworthy of being partners with the much bolder Ai at first.
  • Sweet Seal: A downright adorable seal fairy.

    Glitter

Glitter

Teruko’s partner, a fox fairy who bears the Ignis Heart. She is seventeen years old and treats her partner as a cute little sister. She is proud, very image conscious and a bit fickle. At the same time, she has a good heart and wants to help her partner become more self-confident.

    Breeze

Breeze

Ayaka’s partner, a crane fairy who bears the Ventus Heart. He is twenty years old and acts as a loyal valet to his partner. He is a bit foppish and dramatic but means well and is willing to go all-out for others. As the oldest of the Element Fairies, he feels responsible for the others.

  • Hopeless Suitor: Appears to be this to his fellow knight Runa, earning no shortage of teasing from Glitter.
  • Team Dad: Has appointed himself as this, being the oldest of the group.
  • Token Adult: Out of the fairy partners.

Amias' Court

     Empress Amias

Empress Amias

A (literally) toxic woman who attempted to conquer Earth 2,000 years ago after she and her fellow demonic nobles depleted their own world’s resources. Although she is capable of acting friendly and personable, it takes little for her mask to slip and her true sadistic and cruel nature to show.

  • Big Bad: The central villain of the piece.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: Like King Kagemera, Amias is a monarch who is motivated by a desire for power beyond what they have, is kept from taking an active role due to their dealings with a previous group of heroes, and has a child who they genuinely loved at some point. Unlike Kagemera, Amias is generally more affable towards her underlings, and is much more personable, at least when something hasn't set her off.
  • Ecocidal Antagonist: Sees nature as useless, gutted her own world of its nature and resources until it was destroyed, and delights at the sight of humanity polluting Earth, finding it to be nostalgic.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Genuinely loves and dotes on her daughter, Princess Royne.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Very dramatic, very flamboyant, and absolutely rotten to the core.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Described as having a raspy and posh-sounding contralto voice
  • Expy: Her depowered form is essentially a gender-flipped Hexxus.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Can act polite and even friendly, but it’s all surface-level - even a slight inconvenience leads to her dropping the act and showing her true nasty colors.
  • Monochromatic Eyes: Has green eyes resembling swamp lights in smog monster form.
  • Muck Monster: Takes the form of a semi-corporeal being composed of poisonous miasma, having lost her body after being sealed away.
  • Poisonous Person: Has control over poison and decay, which was at Walking Wasteland levels before her depowering.

     Duke Naphula

Duke Naphula

A dour and stoic man who is often found by Amias’ side. He seems to be in a perpetual state of exhaustion, barely emotes, and hardly takes the field himself.

     Princess Royne

Princess Royne

Amias’ daughter, a cold-hearted, haughty, and spoiled teenage girl who adores her mother and looks down on everyone else. She is the first enemy general that Pretty Cure faces and quickly fixates on defeating them.

  • Animal Motifs: Snakes - her whip is meant to evoke one, her clothing bears a snake motif, and she has snakelike fangs.
  • Casting a Shadow: Wields dark magic in her clashes with Pretty Cure.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: Or rather, Mommy’s Little Villain as the daughter of Amias.
  • Dark Magical Girl: A teenage girl with powers like Pretty Cure’s who is on the side of the villains.
  • Ojou Ringlets: Her hair is styled in a loose version of this.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Has white hair and is an aggressive and unpleasant girl bent on the heroes' destruction.

     Countess Sytry

Countess Sytry

A woman of great strength and fighting prowess, capable of transforming into a leopard. While incredibly talented as a warrior, she is very bad at strategy. She is head over heels for her husband, Malthous, and acts lovelorn and cutesy in his presence.

     Count Malthous

Count Malthous

A garrulous and friendly man of great intellect and magical talent, capable of transforming into a dove. He makes up for his lack of strength with magical finesse in battle. He is incredibly devoted to his wife, Sytry, and can lose all common sense when she is involved.
