Protagonists

    D'Eon de Beaumont

D'Eon de Beaumont

Voiced by: Yuuki Tai (young), Akio Nojima (old) (Japanese), David Matranga (young), Ted Pfister (old) (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d_eon_de_beaumont_5385.jpg
D'Eon is a member of the King's Secret, working in the shadows to keep the peace within French society.
  • First-Episode Resurrection: An interesting variation; It's not his death and resurrection which gives D'Eon his powers, but his sister's. And it takes a traumatic event to "activate" them, as often befits this trope.
  • Historical Domain Character: Chevalier d'Eon
  • Sharing a Body: With Lia.
  • Symbiotic Possession: Shortly after the beginning of the series, D'Eon is possessed by his dead sister's spirit, who manifests herself during combat and constantly mentions taking her revenge.
  • Transformation Sequence: When D'Eon changes into Lia, his hair usually comes loose and his lips become more feminine. It's more subtle than most transformations, but still dramatic.
    • This is played with later on; it is revealed about halfway through the series that when two souls occupy the same body, they slowly lose their individuality. Sure enough, the differences between D'Eon and Lia become more and more subtle to the point that by the end of the series, the show no physical changes when they switch.
  • Two Siblings In One: With Lia.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: D'Eon and Lia look very similar to each other, which is a major plot point. (They're not Half-Identical Twins, though, even though they can easily pass for each other.)
  • Vengeful Ghost: The spirit that possesses D'Eon is full of great anger, sorrow, and the desire to exact revenge.
  • Voices Are Mental: When Lia possesses D'Eon's body, the voice coming from his mouth is hers.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: D'Eon, however, crossdresses mainly for utilitarian reasons, not because he gets any enjoyment out of it.

    Lia de Beaumont

Lia de Beaumont

Voiced by: Risa Mizuno (Japanese), Taylor Hannah (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lia_de_beaumont_5545.jpg
Lia is D'Eon's older sister, who was killed under mysterious circumstances.
  • Action Girl: She's a knight, a magic user, and quite capable with a sword.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Actually, a Big Sister Instinct — with Lia protecting D'Eon, the younger and weaker of the two.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: D'Eon and Lia are close (uncomfortably close, now that they have to share the same body), but they've never felt anything improper towards each other. However, the relationship between half-siblings Lia and Maximilien Robespierre was almost consummated, although neither of them knew they were related to the other at the time of their romance.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Lia was and still is loved and adored by everyone who knew/knows her, male of female.
  • Historical Domain Character: "Lia de Beaumont" is the identity that the real-life Transgender Chevalier d'Eon claims to have assumed during a mission to Russia in 1756.
  • Ojou Ringlets: At the tips of her ponytail and sidelocks.
  • Sharing a Body: With D'Eon.
  • Slipknot Ponytail: Every time Lia possesses D'Eon's body.
  • Two Siblings In One: With D'Eon.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: D'Eon and Lia look very similar to each other, which is a major plot point. (They're not Half-Identical Twins, though, even though they can easily pass for each other.)

    Robin

Robin

Voiced by: Megumi Matsumoto (Japanese), Tyler Galindo (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/robin_5516.jpg
Robin is the Queen of France's young page who is assigned to assist D'Eon.
  • Break the Cutie: Robin is probably the happiest and most optimistic member of the main cast early in the series. By the end, however, he's become so angry and disillusioned he changes his name and becomes the historical Maximilien Robespierre, responsible for the Reign of Terror.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: One of Robin's visions late in the series is of a tricolored rainbow with the colors of the French Republic, foreshadowing his role in The French Revolution and the Terror to come after renaming himself Maximilian Robespierre.
  • Driven to Villainy: In spite of the now merged D'Eon and Lia's attempt to hold onto him, Robin is just too broken by his experiences, and in the story's biggest gut-punch, we find out that he's actually the historical Maximilien Robespierre. In the epilogue, D'Eon/Lia attends his guillotining, finally losing the last person surviving who they loved, although they had already lost him in any real sense decades ago.
  • Face–Heel Turn: In the last few episodes, Robin witnesses some things and goes on the run. He's found by a villain, given a place to hide, and suddenly has switched to the villain's side. It's handled very badly, ignores his relationships with others, and just isn't explained very well.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Inverted. He's a gunslinger.
  • Lady-In-Waiting: Or more accurately, Man in Waiting. He's the Queen of France's young page.
  • The Gunslinger: He uses a flintlock pistol in combat.
  • Tap on the Head: Subverted in the scene where Robin tries to knock a guard unconscious with the butt of his pistol. He only succeeds in hurting the guard, and has to resort to a more vigorous attack to bring him down.

    Teillagory

Teillagory

Voiced by: Haruo Sato (Japanese), John Swasey (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/teillagory_5518.jpg
Teillagory was once D'Eon and Lia's fencing instructor, and is a well-respected knight from the days of Louis XIV.
  • Bald of Evil: Teillagory is a spy for the Duc D'Orleans.
  • Cooldown Hug: Teillagory gives one to Lia after she thinks Maximilien is dead.
  • Evil All Along: Teillagory is a spy for the Duc D'Orleans, and King Louis is an imposter who is prepared to kill those who discover his secret.
  • Expy: Ozaki used Anthony Hopkins in The Mask of Zorro as the basis for Teillagory's character design.
  • Hat Damage: Teillagory is very sad about his hat taking damage in battle. Except it's the only thing that's taken damage as his opponents all on the ground.
  • The Mole: Teillagory serves Philippe II.
  • Spoiler Opening: If you pay attention during the opening, you can clearly see that Teillagory is kneeling in front of the Philippe II, Duke of Orléans. Considering Philippe is portrayed as a villain, Teillagory turning out to be a mole is not very surprising at all.
