The Chan Clan

Jackie Chan and his family and friends, drawn into the conflict on Meridian by their familial relationship to the Lins.
     Jackie Chan
An archaeologist drawn into a life of magic and adventure, he's most recently found himself brought in to play mentor to the Guardians.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: When he's being corrupted by an Oni mask and Jade is trying to get through to him, he chews her out for constantly disobeying him and putting herself in life-threatening situations, revealing how much it scares him that she might not make it. The narration notes that Jade is thrown for a loop.
  • Badass Normal: Doesn't have magic or any special abilities, just fighting skills.
  • The Corruption: Suffers this after having an Oni mask forced onto him.
  • Determinator: Despite his lack of special abilities, he makes it clear during his fight with the mask-empowered Hak Foo that he’ll never give up.
  • Everyone Can See It: His and Viper's feelings for each other, to the point where even Tarakudo can see it and is surprised to learn that they’re not actually involved when he's shoving masks on them.
  • Horror Hunger: While being forced to wear the Oni mask, he develops a craving for human brains. When he realizes this, he's horrified.
  • The Mentor: Serves in this capacity to the Guardians, Jade, and Caleb.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Chang claims that, by blindly acting on behalf of Section 13, Jackie is no different from how Chang was back when he was a ring fighter, saying that both are just pawns of the people calling the shots. Jackie admits that he has a point, but that doesn't stop him from handing Chang over to Captain Black.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In the new Merged Reality, his family and the Lins are cousins.
  • The Mole: He pretends to accept Chang's offer of service in order to bring the Dark Hand down from within.
  • Ship Tease: As per canon, there’s repeated signs of UST between him and Viper.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: After he more actively joins the fight on Meridian, he makes it clear to Jade that it's contingent on her no longer using lethal force against their enemies unless there's no other choice.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He becomes this when corrupted by the mask Tarakudo forces on him, as he becomes convinced the only way to keep everyone safe is to take their shadows and put them in comas, so that they can't fight anymore.

     Jade Chan
Jackie's adventure-seeking niece, who happily embraces a role in the Guardians' conflict in Meridian, a role much bigger than she could have imagined.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Becomes the leader of Rhouglar's faction after his death.
  • Adaptational Badass: Is fairly tough in canon, but here, thanks to her Chosen One magic and Shapeshifter skills, she is roughly on the level of the Guardians.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: What few bits of romantic interest she showed in canon involved boys. Here, she's discovered she's a lesbian.
  • Amazonian Beauty: She notes that she's getting this way after becoming a Shapeshifter, befitting how Shapeshifters have fairly attractive human forms by default, her greater muscle definition making her look elegant instead of like a female brawler.
  • Anti-Magic: After becoming the Chosen One, she gains the ability of Chi Degradation, which breaks down all Chi Magic in its area of effect.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: When Jackie's being corrupted by an Oni mask and she’s trying to get through to him, he chews her out for constantly disobeying him and putting herself in life-threatening situations, revealing how much it scares him that she might not make it. The narration notes that Jade is thrown for a loop.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Following Rhouglar's death, she takes over his remaining men by knocking out their new leader and telling them she's in charge now.
  • Bedmate Reveal: A cot rather than a bed, but early in Chapter 26, she wakes up to find that Irma cuddled up with her at some point in the night for some extra body heat to deal with the cold of the Infinite City room their group was sleeping in.
  • Berserk Button: After being tortured by Tharquin, she develops one towards being called a monster.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: She notes that for all her Shipper on Deck moments with Jackie and Viper, the only time that they ever seriously consider hooking up with each other is when they're both under the influence of an Oni mask.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She becomes downright scary after she gains and masters her new powers.
  • Big Eater: She was already one of these in canon, but she gains a further appetite increase after becoming a Shapeshifter.
  • Blood Knight: Disturbingly, she shows this attitude during the fighting at Torus Filney. Fortunately, she pulls back from it after realizing how reckless it rendered her.
  • Blood Magic: Learns this from the spirit of her past incarnation, Elizabeth Bathory.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: Following the fight in Cavigor, Jade acknowledges that her powers from being a Shapeshifter and the Chosen One are good in a fight, but that over-reliance on them isn't enough. So, she focuses on strengthening her martial arts skills.
  • Brandishment Bluff: Pretends to have a lot more range with her Blood Magic than she actually does to get the Nobles to surrender after demonstrating the ability to make them feel intense pain due to them having been tricked into ingesting her blood, and thus allowing her to manipulate their blood.
  • Break the Cutie: She's put through the wringer when Tharquin gets his hands on her.
  • Canis Major: After becoming a Shapeshifter, she can turn into a giant wolf.
  • The Chessmaster: Starts growing into this, especially when working in tandem with Will.
  • The Chosen One: She's the latest reincarnation of Ben Shui.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Suffers this at the hands of Tharquin.
  • Couldn't Find a Pen: Terrified as reality collapses around her following Shendu's destruction of the Book of Ages, she chomps on her own finger to use the blood to scrawl on the last remaining tattered piece.
  • Covert Pervert: Shows repeated signs of this:
    • When the group is hiding out in the Red House brothel to prepare for the attack on Torus Filney, she seems a bit too enthusiastic about the idea of them dressing up as prostitutes, and when Irma's outfit is adjusted to enhance her bust, she stares and wonders if she'll suffer a wardrobe malfunction, and seems to be hoping for that to happen.
    • When held captive by Tharquin, she gets under his skin by pointing out that he's technically impure, being part Galhot, and admits that she finds Galhot women, who she refers to as "green-skinned babes", attractive, and can't blame his father for being interested in one.
    • At one point, she pulls a Female Gaze on Irma's butt as she's walking away.
    • When she gets a glimpse of a sleeping Irma's cleavage during the aforementioned Bedmate Reveal moment, she can't look away for a minute, and only does so with significant mental effort, and while she didn't exactly mind the situation, she wanted to sleep more, so when the Water Guardian proved a stubborn sleeper, Jade decided to wake her up by nipping at her cheek.
    • When she learns that the Oni in the mask Tarakudo put on Viper keeps complimenting her "rack and ass", as she puts it, she thinks that he's not exactly wrong about them being nice.
  • Crush Blush: When she sees Irma in her new summer outfit.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Is left in a more or less permanent Heroic BSoD after Uncle's death, which she blames herself for.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Just before the subway fight, she has trouble focusing on her scouting due to Irma leaning over in such a way that her breasts rub against Jade's back.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She's a pragmatist who has very few limits when it comes to dealing with enemies, but even she's horrified when she sees how Raythor is punished when the heroes frame him.
  • Exact Words: Her terrified message on the last piece of the Book of Ages was her telling it to bring them all to a safe place. It did so, but not in the way she was expecting...
  • Female Gaze: She provides us with a few female-on-female examples after realizing she's a lesbian:
    • While hanging out with Irma at the mall, she glances at her bust when she gets up from the table, and follows her butt as she walks away.
    • During the above-mentioned Bedmate Reveal moment, she takes a moment to tear her gaze away from Irma's cleavage and focus on waking her up.
  • I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: When she and Irma finally address their feelings for each other, they agree that it's for the best to stay Just Friends for the near future, since there's a chance that a Relationship Upgrade wouldn't work and might impact both their friendship and the overall team. They decide to wait until the war is over to experiment with a more serious relationship.
  • Innocence Lost: Happens to her as a result of the war, especially after her torture at Tharquin's hands.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Upon first encountering Drago, she quickly makes the connection between him and Shendu and tries desperately to deny it, only for him to confirm it seconds later.
  • It's All My Fault: She blames herself for Uncle's death, since he was only in a position to be harmed because he was protecting her.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: After waking up in the new reality, she quickly forgets her meeting with Xin Jing, brushing it off as a dream.
  • The Leader: She becomes this for a crew among the Rebellion after taking over Rhouglar's faction following his death.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She has this reaction after she impulsively kills Tharquin for what he did to her, which makes her realize what a Blood Knight she’s become.
  • Not So Similar: Despite the above-mentioned similarity to Nerissa, Yan Lin realizes that Jade still has her compassion, which Nerissa lost a long time ago.
  • Oh, Crap!: When she encounters Drago and realizes that he's Shendu's son.
  • Out-of-Clothes Experience: The dream vision she has right before she transforms the first time has her running naked through a forest.
  • Overnight Age-Up: She becomes noticeably taller and more physically mature after becoming a Shapeshifter.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Like Will, she's perfectly willing to do what it takes to win.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In the new Merged Reality, her family and the Lins are cousins.
  • Say My Name: When she gets the upper hand on Tharquin after he'd tortured her, she makes him say her name.
  • Scars Are Forever: Her back is left heavily scarred by Tharquin's torture, with Nerissa deliberately not healing them in order to teach her a lesson.
  • Ship Tease: There have been hints of chemistry between her and Irma.
  • Spit Take: She chokes on her soda when Irma asks if there are any boys she likes.
  • Super-Senses: After becoming a Shapeshifter, her senses are all heightened even in human form.
  • Super-Strength: As a mammal/wolf Shapeshifter, she's especially strong in her wolf form.
  • Those Two Guys: She and Irma quickly settle into this role.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: After Jackie more actively joins the fight on Meridian, he makes it clear to Jade that it's contingent on her no longer using lethal force against their enemies unless there's no other choice.
  • True Companions: She becomes this with the Guardians.
  • Walking Spoiler: Thanks to being revealed as the Chosen One and becoming a Shapeshifter.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The other Guardians and Chan Clan members call her and Will out for plotting to steal magical artifacts for the Rebellion during the subway fight with the Dark Hand, without bothering to tell the rest of them.

     Uncle
The Chan patriarch and master chi wizard, who lends the Guardians his knowledge and power.
  • An Arm and a Leg: His last attack against Phobos vaporizes his arm.
  • Car Fu: He and Tohru run over the possessed Lothar with their car during the fight in Chapter 7.
  • Character Death: He's killed by Phobos in Chapter 32.
  • Go Out with a Smile: His last action upon being mortally wounded is to give a smile to his family.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Literally, as he's a chi wizard who also knows kung-fu. More specifically, he's combined the two in order to master a technique called Xiao Li, which allows him to absorb the energy from enemy attacks and redirect it.
  • My Greatest Failure: Implies that he blames himself for being unable to stop Nerissa's Start of Darkness.
  • Old Master: Of good chi magic.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: As Tohru points out, when he speaks in first person, it's a sign things are about to get serious.
  • Related in the Adaptation: In the new Merged Reality, he and Yan Lin are cousins.
  • Ship Tease: He's hinted to have had a past relationship with Kadma.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Admits that he's not as physically gifted as most of his enemies, but as shown in his fight with Ikazuki, his talents more than make up for it.
  • Wizard Duel: He has several with Wong over the course of the story.

     Tohru
A reformed Dark Hand enforcer and enemy of the Chans, who has since become Uncle’s assistant and apprentice, and like him aids the Guardians magically.
