    The Desert

High Prince Rohan

High Princess Sioned

Prince Pol

Rohan son. Inherits both Princemarch and the Desert.

  • Fatal Flaw: Pride. Pride motivates nearly all of Pol's actions and directly causes him to enter a great deal of conflict with both Rohan and Andry in Dragon Star.
  • Half-Breed Angst: His true parentage makes him half-Sunrunner, half-Sorcerer. This is a serious issue because not only is he a child by rape, but because anyone with an eye for looking at family trees will realize there's no possible way Sioned could be his mother. He has to tread very carefully in letting anyone know this.
  • Heroic Bastard: He turned out pretty well, all things considered.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Pol is characterized by being more impulsive and rash than his father Rohan, which often causes him to act like a jerk. However, he has a good heart underneath it all.

Princess Meiglan

See Other Royalty.

Lady Tobin

Rohan's sister and Lord Chaynal's spouse.

  • Blood Knight: She loves fighting and conquering.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: She's very easy to set off.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: Subverted. While she initially appears to lack the ability to Sunrun, she awakens her latent Sunrunner abilities in Dragon Star, requiring her to be taught some Sunrunning to communicate after she suffers a stroke and loses control of her body.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The energetic girl sibling to Rohan's savvy guy sibling.

Lord Chaynal

A Horse Master and Tobin's husband.

Lady Andrade

The head of all Sunrunners and Rohan's aunt. She marries Rohan to Sioned to try to give her family a magical advantage over the other princes and kickstarts a movement to give birth to princes with magic rather than keeping magic and royal lines separate.—-

  • Heroic RRoD: She dies after overextending her power to try to prove Masul's parentage.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Marrying Sioned to Rohan causes her to lose a great deal of her influence over the Desert as Sioned sees how dangerous Andrade can be and deliberately goes against her wishes.
  • Iron Lady: Andrade is a mean, no-nonsense manipulator.
  • Manipulative Bitch: At her worst she falls into this, as she has absolutely no qualms about manipulating people into doing what she wants despite their wishes.
  • Screw Destiny: Her initial destiny was to be married to Roelstra. She fought tooth and nail against it and was able to fight fate at the cost of making Roelstra her and her family's enemy.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She intended to give her family an advantage over Roelstra's by introducing magic into their bloodline, but ended up causing a war and selective breeding practices among royalty for Sunrunner children.

Lord Andry

One of Tobin and Chay's sons and a powerful Sunrunner. He inherits Andrade's position when she dies.

  • Angsty Surviving Twin: After Sorin is killed by a Sorcerer.
  • Anti-Villain: In the Dragon Star series. While he murders several people, he is primarily motivated by paranoia of Sorcerers attempting to overthrow the world's monarchies or enslave the populace as they did in years past. Given that an invading force of formerly oppressed people sails from across the sea intending to finish all the Sorcerers off and begins a massacre of the continent, his search for weaponry and ways to do battle against foes ends up being highly useful.
  • Fantastic Racism: Leads a genocide against the Sorcerers, thinking they're too dangerous to be left alive. That being said, he allows Sorcerers who are loyal to him to live and hold high rankings in his inner circle.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: After his Second Love is killed he begins to suffer severe Sanity Slippage.
  • Properly Paranoid: Andry has a deep-rooted hatred of Sorcerers and kills off many of them, believing them to be too dangerous to be left alive. We later learn that not only did the Sorcerers enslave other continents in the past, but they had to be stopped by Sunrunners from doing the same. Given that many of them were plotting to control Rolestra through his wife Lallante and then tried to install Ianthe's children on the throne of Princemarch, it's not entirely unreasonable for Andry to be suspicious of their intentions.
  • Playing with Fire: Like other Sunrunners, he often summons fire.
  • Really Gets Around: During the time skip between books 3 and 4 he has many children with other Sunrunners, though it's less about the sexual relationships and more about fostering a "pure" Sunrunner bloodline.
  • Sanity Slippage: Throughout the second series, he devolves further and further as the continent is attacked.
  • Unrequited Love Lasts Forever: He never truly gets over Alasen, though he tries to claim he did.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He wants peace for the continent and to work together with his family, but him and Pol both have pride issues that don't allow them to work together.

    Princemarch

High Prince Roelstra

  • Abhorrent Admirer: He is attracted to Sioned and tries to get her addicted to dranath to force her into his court. When this fails, he indirectly causes her to lose the ability to have children.
  • Arch-Enemy: He serves as Rohan's until his death.
  • Arc Villain: The villain of the first book in the series.
  • The Casanova: He has had a litany of lovers in his past.
  • Entitled to Have You: Part of what makes him so utterly reprehensible is belief in his entitlement to women.
  • Evil Prince: He enjoys power for power's sake, and plays the various princes against each other for his own gain and amusement, among other things.
  • For the Evulz: He deliberately manipulates the other princes into fighting each other because it both keeps his kingdom strong and amuses him.
  • Has a Type: Redheads. His current mistress Palila had auburn hair and he tries to abduct and rape Sioned, a redhead.
  • Heir Club for Men: Even with all his mistresses, he's been unable to have a male child. Until Masul, possibly.
  • The High King: The High Prince until his death.
  • Really Gets Around: He's had fourteen children and several mistresses.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He is an imposing and attractive man, but has a horrible personality.

Princess Ianthe

Rolestra's oldest child.
  • Bed Trick: She gets herself pregnant with Rohan's child by pretending to be Sioned while he's drugged and cannot consent.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: When she captures Sioned, she keeps her in a room without light (a Fate Worse than Death for Sunrunners) and gets her guards to rape her. She also mind rapes Rohan into sleeping with her.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Her plans only fail because she underestimated how far Sioned would go to have Rohan's son- Even if it meant killing someone and stealing their child to do so.
  • Fairest of Them All: She is obsessed with maintaining her appearance at all times.
  • Gambit Pileup: She makes gambits all around, and usually they work. Until Sioned kills her.
  • I Know You Know I Know: She knows Pandsala will ally with Palila against her after they make a deal to ruin Palila and betrays her schemes to her father, using her as the fall guy for her own scheming.
  • Teach Him Anger: Roelstra exiled her for a while and rubbed her failures in her face to teach her hatred and make her more useful.
  • The Vamp: She tries to seduce her way out of her problems, including trying to bed Rohan before marriage- Which would disgrace her completely if people learned of it.
  • Villainous Princess: She is a Princess of Princemarch and an evil woman.
  • Woman Scorned: Rohan refusing her advances caused her to consider him her bitter enemy.

Ruval

See Sorcerers.

Marron

See Sorcerers.

Segev

See Sorcerers.

Pol

See The Desert.

Princess Pandsala

Roelstra's second daughter. She is exiled from Princemarch after trying to derail Ianthe's plot to ruin Palila and is discovered to have Sunrunner powers. After Roelstra's death, she is made Princess-Regent of Princemarch until Pol is old enough to rule.

  • Always Someone Better: She's suffered from being under Ianthe's shadow her whole life, and loses Rohan to Sioned.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: Played With. She rules over her people fairly, but dedicated fifteen years of her life to wiping out all her sisters and any other royal family unrelated to the Desert.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Rohan makes her Princess-Regent to try to cement her loyalty to his family. It works too well.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She is jealous of Ianthe and later of Sioned, though she learns to deal with it later in life.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: One of her few flaws is her anger can easily override her intelligence.
  • Out-Gambitted: She is outgambitted in her scheme to replace Palila's child with a boy.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: She is described as beautiful, with pale skin and long black hair.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Pandsala is outwardly a picture perfect regent. She is also a serial killer who led to the deaths of nearly all the rest of the royal families in order to unite the entire continent under Pol's command.
  • Spanner in the Works: Ruins all of Segev's plans simply by suddenly recognizing his resemblance to Ianthe.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She did her best as regent of Princemarch to govern fairly and does everything for Pol's sake. Including wiping out half the world's royal families in case they ever decided to turn against Pol.
  • Yandere: For Rohan and Pol, due to his passing resemblance to her making her project her fantasies of being Rohan's wife onto him.

Princess Naydra

  • From Nobody to Nightmare: She goes from being considered one of the most feeble-minded and weak of Rolestra's children to the last one left alive and a powerful Sorceress.
  • Modest Royalty: She has none of the power-hunger most of her family possesses.
  • Never Mess with Granny: When she takes her level in badass she is one of the oldest living characters left.
  • Took a Level in Badass: By the second series, after being taught how to use her powers.
  • Token Heroic Orc: She's one of the few of Rolestra's children to not be evil, or at the least morally ambiguous. She mostly just wants to be left alone.

Lady Kiele

Lady of Waes and one of Roelstra's daughters.

  • Awful Wedded Life: Her and her husband have long fallen out of love with each other and both openly take other lovers.
  • Bastard Bastard: The manipulative daughter of one of Roelstra's mistresses.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Downplayed. She was always a powerful lady of Waes, but Pandsala didn't consider her important or intelligent enough to prioritize killing off before she became a serious threat to Rohan's rule. Pandsala curses herself for not having gotten around to offing her sooner.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: She rules Waes with somewhat of an iron fist and plots against Rohan's family.
  • Insistent Terminology: None of her servants are ever to call Chiana "Princess" for any reason.
  • Kick the Dog: She instructs her staff to be as rude to Chiana as she can get away with and sides against her with Masul in the question of Chiana's parentage. Given Chiana's horrid personality she doesn't gain much sympathy.
  • Lady Macbeth: She generally does quite a bit of the ruling of Waes, since her husband has no interest in doing so.

Lady Chiana

Roelstra's fourteenth daughter, and the reason for Palila's death. Roelstra named her after the old word for 'treachery', after finding out about his daughter and mistress's scheme to replace her with a boy baby. She was possibly switched at birth with Masul.

  • Bastard Bastard: She's a real bitch.
  • Daddy's Girl: She somehow believes Rolestra always loved and cared for her despite the man disowning her at birth and attempting to have her killed.
  • Entitled Bastard: She believes she's entitled to a throne simply because she's Rolestra's child- Nevermind that he disowned her at birth and was going to kill her for failing to be a son.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: For all her flaws she genuinely loves her son and he loves her back, protecting her against his father Halinan.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She is jealous of anyone with power and seeks to take it for herself.
  • Lady Macbeth: By Sunrunner's Fire, she is the Lady Macbeth to Halinan of Meadowlord.
  • Loving a Shadow: She is obsessed with her father, nevermind that they never met and he tried to kill her as a baby and disowned her.
  • Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe: Due to the gambit pileup that occurred on her birth night, Chiana's parentage is held in contention- While she physically resembles Palila, she looks nothing like Rolestra, while Masul is his spitting image.
  • Mind Control: Marron puts her under mind control for the majority of the third book.
  • Switched at Birth: Possibly with Masul. He is killed before the matter is resolved.
  • Spoiled Brat: In Dragon Prince.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: She would have died if Andrade had not taken her in, but she ends up seeing Rohan's family as enemies.
  • Villainous Princess: Upon marrying Halinan of Meadowlord she becomes Princess of Meadowlord and constantly opposes the protagonists from then on.

Masul

Roelstra's possible son, Switched at Birth with Chiana in the Gambit Pileup on the day of his birth.

  • Accidental Murder: He accidentally kills Kleve by cutting off one of Kleve's fingers while he was trying to Sunrun, tearing apart his soul with the knife's iron.
  • Ambiguous Situation: His parentage. There is a commoner who is an Identical Stranger to Rolestra who tried to extort money from Kiele claiming to be Masul's true father, but he could have easily been lying since he had no proof of his claim and was killed before being questioned. Masul is killed before the matter is fully resolved, removing the need for it to be resolved.
  • Arc Villain: The main villain of the second book and dead at the end of it.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: He jokingly suggests it to Kiele when he meets her.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Tortures and accidentally kills Kleve, a Sunrunner who discovered him with Kiele.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: His goal is to be recognized as the prince he thinks he is at any cost.
  • Entitled to Have You: Just like Rolestra, he believes he can seduce any woman, even one who is likely his half-sister.
  • Fantastic Racism: He detests Sunrunners and magic in general out of fear of them.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: A big part of his arrogance is due to this.
  • Identical Grandson: He is nearly identical looking to Rolestra.
  • Jerkass: He is incredibly arrogant in all ways. Part of his attitude is why Kiele agrees to sponsor him, since his personality was so close to Rolestra's despite never having met the man that it convinced her Masul was likely Rolestra's son.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Played with. Masul is so like Rolestra in personality Kiele considers it very likely Masul is in fact his son.
  • Likes Older Women: He flirts with Kiele, a woman more than a decade his senior.
  • Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe: Played with. Masul resembles neither of his supposed parents and is Rolestra's spitting image, leading to rumours that he was Switched at Birth with Chiana, who resembles Palila but not Rolestra.
  • Switched at Birth: Possibly with Chiana. He is killed before the matter is resolved.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: Mostly to Roelstra, though some of his traits are similar to Palila's.

Princess Lallante

Roelstra's wife, and mother of four of his children.

  • Defector from Decadence: She was really a pure-blooded Sorceress who used her marriage with Roelstra to escape her controlling peers. Ianthe, Pandsala, and Naydra inherited her powers.
  • Morality Pet: While she was alive, Rolestra was significantly less of a jerkass. With her death, he fully plunged back into being an evil monster.
  • Posthumous Character: She's long dead by the time of the series.

Lady Palila

Rolestra's final mistress, who is trying to finally give him a son.

    Other Royalty

Prince Miyon of Cunaxa

  • Abusive Parents: He alternates between abusive and neglectful towards his offspring depending on how it suits him.
  • Arch-Enemy: He considers Rohan to be one after Rohan refuses to give Chiana a dowry to marry him (after Sioned tried to arrange the marriage, thinking the two would drive each other mad). Rohan considers him more of an annoyance than a true threat.
  • Jerkass: He sees himself as superior to everyone and doesn't hesitate to show it.
  • Really Gets Around: He himself admits he has more children than he cares to know about.
  • Smug Snake: He's a smug Jerkass who rarely achieves anything of note for all his arrogance.
  • Zero Percent Approval Gambit: He's deliberately a jerkass to his child, Meiglan, to make Pol feel sympathy for her. It works, but it also makes Meiglan refuse to help him.

Lady Meiglan

One of Miyon's many illegitimate children, she is part of the Cunaxan diplomatic party to the Desert.

  • Character Development: She undergoes a great deal of character development in the second book series, having to force herself to go from being a Shrinking Violet into an Iron Lady. This process isn't without a great deal of anguish and self-doubt.
  • Heroic Bastard: Despite being used as a Honey Trap, Meiglan is a kind but timid girl.
  • Honey Trap: Intended to be one for Pol. It succeeds, but she uses him to escape her father rather than to help him.
  • Mistreatment Inducted Betrayal: Rather than using her position as Pol's wife to benefit her highly abusive father, Meiglan fully commits herself to Pol and The Desert.
  • Mysterious Waif: Invoked to be used to seduce Pol.
  • Official Couple: She marries Pol, becoming the High Princess.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's heavily shy and introverted.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Miyon is deliberately cruel to her to appeal to Pol's sense of honour and pity. It works, though Meiglan really is that timid and shy.

    Sorcerers

  • Bastard Bastard: All of Ianthe's sons qualify. Turns out being raised by Mireva does not make someone a good person.
  • Red Right Hand: Sorcerers will not get seasick on water, while Sunrunners do.

Mireva

A sorceress determined to dethrone Lady Andrade and Rohan and become queen of all the kingdoms.

  • Big Bad: After Roelstra dies, she takes over this role.
  • Determinator: Works magic despite being imprisoned with steel, which shreds a magic user's soul, and being in heavy withdrawal.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Pol rejects her when she disguises herself as Meiglan because she acts arrogantly and haughty, not understanding that Pol was attracted to Meiglan's shy kindness and seeing those traits as flaws.
  • Red Right Hand: Her eyes usually stay the same colour when she shapeshifts.
  • Shapeshifting Seducer: Seduces Pol disguised as Meiglan.
  • Vain Sorceress: She often uses spells to conceal her true age and appearance.

Ruval

Ianthe's oldest son, and Roelstra's heir presumptive until his assumed death.

Marron

Ianthe's second son.

Segev

Ianthe's third son.

  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: Rohan and Sioned don't know how to punish Pandsala for killing off half the continent's royal families in their service. They are prevented from having to act by Segev killing Pandsala after she recognizes him as one of Ianthe's sons.
  • Bastard Bastard: Like all his siblings, he was born out of wedlock and is a real Jerkass.
  • False Friend: To Hollis. He nearly succeeds in breaking up her engagement while presenting himself as a genuine friend to her.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Hollis is able to kill him because of the power augmentation the Drannath he addicted her to gave her.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He's intensely jealous of Hollis's fiancé Maarken.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: He is by far the Sorcerer who got furthest into his goals. He successfully manipulated Hollis into calling off her engagement to Maarken, got his hands on the Star Scroll, and came a hair's breadth away from using Masul to kill Maarken with no evidence that could be traced back to him while also following Mireva's instructions to get Masul on the throne of Princemarch. The only reason he failed in his goals is through the sheer bad luck of his aunt Pandsala suddenly noticing he shared facial features with his mother Ianthe.
  • Likes Older Women: He falls for Hollis, a woman several years older than him.
  • Love Redeems: Subverted. Segev's love for Hollis, no matter how toxic, is humanizing and convinces him to try to usurp Mireva so he won't have to dispose of her, but he never gets the chance as Pandsala recognizes her sister's traits in him and unmasks him, leading to Hollis killing him.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He does an excellent job as the mole and would have succeeded in all his goals had Pandsala not recognized him at the last second.
  • The Mole: Sent to infiltrate the Sunrunners and steal back the Star Scroll on Sorceries.
  • Pet the Dog: For how toxic their relationship is, he does love Hollis and tends to her when she feels increasingly ill rather than allowing her to die once she'd outlived her usefulness to him. He even wanted to become The Starscream in order to stay with her.
  • Precocious Crush: Hollis believes his attraction to her is one, but [it's something else entirely.
  • The Starscream: He intended to usurp Mireva with the knowledge in the Star Scroll. He dies before he can put this plan into action.
  • Yandere: For Hollis. Part of intention of becoming The Starscream was so he could remain with her.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Averted. Segev intended on disposing of whatever Sunrunner he manipulated once they were no longer useful to him, but grew genuinely fond of Hollis and decides to get her fiancé killed and usurp Mireva with the Star Scroll's spells.
