Characters / Date A Live - Quasi-Spirits

Go To

Quasi-Spirits (準精霊, Jun Seirei) are the beings that live in the Neighboring world after the Spirits left for the other world. Unlike a normal Spirit, they only possess a fragment of a Sephira Crystal. They make up the majority of the cast of Date A Live Fragment: Date A Bullet.

There will be unmarked spoilers for those who haven't read the light novel.

White Queen's Army

    In General
The White Queen's forces, which are stationed in the Third Region Binah.
  • Chess Motifs: The entire organization is based on white chess pieces.
  • Shout-Out: Most of the monsters there like Snark or Jabberwocky are derived from Lewis Carroll's works.

    White Queen

White Queen

Voiced by: Saori Onishi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/white_queen_anime.png

Also known as White Kurumi or the inverted clone, the White Queen is the main villian of the Date A Bullet series. After taking over the Third Region Binah from Carte, she stations herself and her forces there.

  • Adaptational Sympathy: The White Queen that appears in the anime film lacks most of her light novel counterpart's atrocities, or, at the very least, said actions aren't shown. She also holds a love-hate relationship with Kurumi, and ultimately wants for them to go back to be friends, no matter the cost; whereas, in the light novel, she seeks to kill Kurumi for good, return to Earth and become its ruler.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Her (second) death in the anime is tragic, as she makes peace with Kurumi right before dying in her arms.
  • Death Equals Redemption: In the anime, she realizes the error of her way right after receiving a fatal injury from Kurumi. She then apologizes for what she did and praises Kurumi for defeating her.
  • Evil Former Friend: She was Sawa Yamauichi, Kurumi's best friend who turned evil after Kurumi (unwittingly) killed her.
  • Evil Twin: She looks like a white-haired evil version of Kurumi. Justified as she is Kurumi's Inverted Form.
  • Foil: To Kurumi. Kurumi represents Dark Is Not Evil, while the White Queen is Light Is Not Good. Whereas Kurumi's powers allow her to control time, the White Queen can control space.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Takes this role in volumes 4 and 5. While she works behind the scenes and instigates the conflict, she doesn't actually appear to confront Kurumi until volume 6.
  • Light Is Not Good: She has white hair, wears a pure white military outfit, and is the most unhinged and insane character in the spin off.
  • The Reveal: Her main personality Queen is revealed to be Kurumi's childhood friend Sawa Yamauchi at the end of volume 6.
  • Royal Rapier: White Queen wields a rapier.
  • Space Master: Her Demon King Lucifugus has space powers as a foil to Kurumi's time powers.
  • Take Over the World: Her main goal in the light novel is to go back to Earth and rule it.
  • Tragic Villain: Sawa was Kurumi's best friend, but she received a Sephira by Mio which turned her into a rampaging creature that set everything around her on fire. Kurumi, not recognizing her best friend, killed her. After death, Sawa got sent to the Neighboring World, not being aware of why Kurumi killed her which made her start to hate her former best friend. Once there, she met Kurumi's inverted Form, which was the result of the latter's horror at realizing what she had done, and the two fused, thus creating the identity that became known as the White Queen.

    Rook

Rook

    Bishop

Bishop

    Knight

Knight

  • The Ghost: The only executive yet to appear and face Kurumi. She finally appears in volume 7.
  • Red Herring: The Knight that shows up in Volume 7 isn't a brainwashed Hibiki, but rather another Empty pretending to be her to throw off Kurumi's game.

Dominions

The rulers of the Neighboring World after the departure of the Spirits.

    Doll Master

Doll Master

Voiced by: Rina Hidaka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/panie_anime.png

The Dominion of the Tenth Region Malkuth. She is in charge of hosting the killing game of the region.

  • Human Resources: Steals the Sephira Fragments from Quasi-Spirits she kills and uses them to make puppet replicas of her victims.
  • Sadist: Loves to relish on being cruel. She tries to kill Hibiki with a puppet of her dear dead friend while laughing at her horrified response afterwards.
  • The Sociopath: She shows no remorse for those she killed or turned to dolls, and states that she would've continued to increase the number of dolls had she not been stopped.
  • Starter Villain: Shows up only as the main villain of volume 1 and is killed off at the end of the volume. Later volumes have White Queen appear as the overarching Big Bad of the story.

    Rinemu Kirari

Rinemu Kirari

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rinemu_kirari.png

The former Dominion of the Ninth Region Yesod.

  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Downplayed, but the other Dominions are exacerbated by her personality and sheer stupidity at times. This gets to the point where they were glad Mizuha replaced her.
  • Idol Singer: The best one in a region dedicated to them. At least until seeing one of Miku's memories traumatizes her and takes away her ability to sing. According to Hibiki though, she is a very talented singer, but her dancing skills are pretty bad.
  • Living Lie Detector: She's able to tell whenever someone is lying. Maya speculates that this is due to the Ninth Spirit type's power over sound.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: Despite Mayuka sending assassins to kill her, she looks the other way and tells Kurumi to save her. Goes even further when she gives her a new job after the revelations of Mayuka's actions ruin her idol career.
  • Weak Boss, Strong Underlings: Yesod determines rank through skills as an idol. Hibiki notes that her bodyguards are actually stronger than her.

    Kareha Banouin

Kareha Banouin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kareha_banouin.png

The Dominion of the Eighth Region Hod.

  • Big Sister Bully: She isn't above pulling pranks on Mizuha.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She noted that she used to protect her younger sister Mizuha from bullies when they were humans. Presently, she drives Mizuha away out of fear of hurting her now that she can feel her mind slowly slipping.
  • Combat Hand Fan: Kareha's Unsigned Angel takes the form of a fan that creates and controls flower petals.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: She chooses to die after giving what amounts to a love confession to Retsumi.
  • Flowers of Femininity: She's a feminine and elegant girl who controls flower petals and wears a flower decoration in her hair.
  • Foil: Serves as one to Shido's relationship to Tohka. Just like Shido, she was the one who gave Retsumi her name. Her death scene at the end of the volume actually even predates volume 20 where Tohka dies.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Remembering the circumstances of how she died as a human caused her to accept that she is dead. This accelerates her transformation into an Empty.
  • Hide Your Otherness: As she starts to turn into an Empty, she begins to wear a wig to cover up her slowly whitening hair.
  • Hime Cut: She appears as a graceful Japanese woman clad in a kimono. To complete the image, her hairstyle consists of blunt bangs, cheek length sidelocks, and very long straight hair.
  • Kimono Is Traditional: Kareha acts like a refined Japanese princess. Fittingly, her Astral Dress takes the form of an elegant light pink and purple kimono with a distinctive floral pattern.
  • Petal Power: Her Unsigned Angel allows her to control a flurry of cherry blossoms with her fan.

    Ariadne Foxrot

Ariadne Foxrot

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ariadne_foxlot.png

The Dominion of the Fourth Region Chesed.

  • Beware the Mind Reader: Sort of. She can't outright read minds, but she can sense the level of heat in her opponent's emotions. It serves as a reliable gauge for testing how confident her opponent's plays will be. This naturally gives her a huge advantage in the poker match.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Her last name was translated as Foxlot before an image from volume 6 clarified it to be Foxrot.
  • Master of Illusion: By altering the raising and lowering the perception of her opponent's senses, she can cause them to see hallucinations.
  • Master of Threads: For combat, quicksilver strings attach to Ariadne's fingertips and can be used like cutting wire or threaded into whips.
  • Name Order Confusion: Unlike most characters, her name is written completely in katakana, which means it's written in western order.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Her constant sleepiness is in part to help play the image of someone weak so others will underestimate her.
  • Oh, Crap!: Internally had this once she figured out the intensity of Kurumi's feelings for the boy in the other world was stronger than the ability of her Unsigned Angel to modify her emotions.
  • Overly Long Name: The full name of her Unsigned Angel is Taiintaiyounijuyonsetsuki. Seriously...
  • People Puppets: She is able to use her threads to invade an enemy's Sephira Fragment to take control of their movements. She is able to control ten of the Yui dolls simultaneously. However, she notes that this is a huge drain on her stamina and it would only last for around half an hour.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: She's noted to be the strongest Dominion, with at least two Dominions on the level of Haraka needed to suppress her.
  • Red Mage: Assumes this role as part of the RPG party in volume 6.
  • Secret-Keeper: Reveals to Hibiki that she and Haraka already know about the gate to the First Region Keter. And made an oath to prevent anyone from accessing it in order to protect the Neighboring World.
  • Shout-Out: She has the same name as the Crete Princess from Classical Mythology. Her quicksilver strings are a reference to the ball of string used to help Theseus navigate through the labyrinth. Her distaste for love may also refer to how Ariadne was dumped by Theseus in all versions of the myth.
  • Superpower Lottery: Her powers allow her to make illusions that affect all five senses just like Aizen's Shikai, and its done through a flexible medium like Doflamingo's string powers. And that's not even getting into her ability to tamper with emotions and raise the physical temperature to a point where her opponent simply roasts herself internally.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Both Kurumi and her know that their alliance will only go so far until the White Queen is defeated. Kurumi's goal of returning the real world goes against her desires to protect the Neighboring World.
  • Worf Effect: Easily taken out at the end of volume 6 to showcase the power difference between a Dominion and the White Queen.

    Yuri Sagakure

Yuri Sagakure

The Dominion of the Seventh Region Netzach.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Crosses this after murdering her little sister, the original Yui. White Queen then approached her and offered her a new motive for living.
  • Domestic Abuse: Her relationship with the Yui models has shades of this.
  • Dramatic Irony: Despite being the Dominion of the entire region focused on gambling, she's a lousy gambler.
  • Mole: She's the traitor Dominion working for the White Queen. Although later revelations reveal she was working for the White Queen even before becoming a Dominion.
  • Incest Subtext: The other Dominions consider her to be a huge siscon. The reveal complicates matters. She used to be one, but after killing the original Yui and working for the White Queen, all of the love she had for her little sister went to the boy from the other world.
  • The Reveal: She's Bishop, one of the White Queen's three executives. However, it's revealed that she was planning on also planning on betraying the White Queen out of love for the boy from the other world
  • Yandere: She murdered her little sister after the original Yui tried to leave home to become independent.

    Oka Miyafuji

Oka Miyafuji

The Dominion of the Sixth Region Tiphereth.
  • Gravity Master: Her Unsigned Angel can control the gravity of anything it cuts ala Wabisuke from Bleach.
  • The Scapegoat: Used by Yuri to be a decoy Bishop that she brainwashed.

    Maya Yukishiro

Maya Yukishiro

The Dominion of the Second Region Chokmah.
  • Mr. Exposition: Explains the history of the Neighboring World and Quasi-Spirits to Kurumi and the others.

Others

    Hibiki Higoromo

Hibiki Higoromo

Voiced by: Kaede Hondo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hibiki_higoromo_anime.png

A seventh-type Quasi-Spirit who travels alongside Kurumi Tokisaki throughout her adventure in the Neighboring World

  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Her Unsigned Angel Killing King gives her the power to switch bodies, with the added benefit of sealing the targets' memories as well.
  • Hidden Depths: Volume 2 reveals that she is a very talented idol producer, with almost all of the idols in her training quickly reaching S-rank.
  • Mercy Kill: Kills Doll Master after seeing her bed-ridden condition even before fighting the real Kurumi.
  • Morality Chain: She makes sure Kurumi doesn't go too far. Case in point, Kurumi was considering simply just killing every Quasi-Spirit in the Ninth Region Yesod to move on before Hibiki stopped her.
  • Revenge: Her main purpose in life was getting revenge on Doll Master for killing her best friend. This is noted in volume 6 where the job for avenger is in her guild card but crossed out since she has already completed her revenge.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: The Kurumi at the beginning of Volume 1 is really Hibiki, who had stolen her appearance and powers through her Unsigned Angel.

    Tsuan

Tsuan

Voiced by: Mariya Ise

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsuan_anime.png

A fearsome warrior, revered for her battle prowess and kill count.

  • Anime Chinese Girl: Tsuan has light brown hair styled in two neat buns and in combat, she wears a dark blue qipao.
  • Blood Knight: She's described by Kurumi as a battle junkie.
  • The Dreaded: Her infamy leads to most Quasi-Spirits avoiding her, or some attempting to kill her to take some of that fame.
  • Hidden Depths: Turns out to be a very talented idol, enough to successfully defeat Kurumi once in an idol audition.
  • An Ice Person: Her Astral Dress Brinicle has an ice ability. When damaged by an attack, the shards will instantly freeze the area surrounding her wounds, including her opponent if they are within range. The freezing effect becomes stronger the more damage it sustains. It can also be used to freeze her wounds and stop bleeding. However, doing so also puts her at risk of frostbite. At full power, it can even summon a small blizzard to temporarily blind the enemy.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: After her battle with Hibiki in Kurumi's body, she grows enamoured with the idea of fighting the real Kurumi, excited for the challenge such a brawl would provide.
  • Mix-and-Match Weapon: Her weapon is a Halberd-Warhammer hybrid.
  • One-Woman Army: Among the Quasi-Spirits, she is infamous for being a veteran fighter who has killed 100 people with a single blow.
  • Super-Senses: An ability from Lailaps is enhancing all her senses, making her like a hound. She is able to sense Yui Sagakure's Reiryoku from a distance even when the ninja is using stealth ability of her Astral Dress.

    Retsumi Jugasaki

Retsumi Jugasaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/retsumi_jugasaki.png

The leader of the rebel army in the Eighth Region Hod.

  • Cleavage Window: Her military jacket sports a diamond-shaped cleavage cutout.
  • Genki Girl: Kareha describes as bright and cheerful as the sun.
  • Rank Up: She takes over as the new Dominion of Hod after Kareha's death.
  • Rebel Leader: Retsumi commands one of the sides striving over control of the Eighth Region Hod.
  • Stripperiffic: She wears an Astral Dress comprised of a modified general's jacket on top of a black bikini swimsuit.
  • Water Guns and Balloons: In order to comply with the Eighth Region Hod's nonlethal warfare, Retsumi modified her Unsigned Angel to fire out water rather than bullets. However, as noted by Kurumi's observation, the sheer water pressure shot out is still enough to wound anyone struck.

    Aiai Nogi

Aiai Nogi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aiai_nogi.png

A ninth type Quasi-Spirit.

  • Poisonous Person: Aiai's Unsigned Angel allows her to control poison leaked out from her spear. The poison is highly corrosive, capable of melting away solid concrete within seconds. She is capable of mentally manipulating the poison into the shape of a serpent that can travel over 200 kilometers per hour.

    Ayame Takeshita

A second type Quasi-Spirit.

    False Proxy

False Proxy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/false_proxy.png

A sixth type Quasi-Spirit, supposedly. In actuality, she is a storage unit used to store and transport combat type dolls for Doll Master.

  • Bandaged Face: Her entire body, including her face, is covered in bandages.
  • Hide Your Otherness: Her bandages conceal the fact that she is a storage unit, rather than a living, breathing entity.
  • Meaningful Name: False Proxy refers to how she's actually a decoy representative for Doll Master during the killing game.
