The Zenfis Margraviate

Haruto and His Inner Circle

    Haruto Zenfis

Haruto Zenfis

Voiced by: Ayumu Murase (Japanese), Kevin D. Thelwell (English)

The main character, Haruto was a shut-in who was reincarnated in a fantasy world as Prince Reinhart, only to be cast out by his birth family due to the mistaken belief that his mana level is just 2.

  • Barrier Warrior: He wields barrier magic, which he uses for everything.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards Charlotte. If not for her, Haruto would be content to be a Hikikomori, but he takes up superheroing to impress her.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: The basic tenant of his character is that he is able to do just about anything, but he really wants to do nothing.
  • Goo-Goo-Godlike: His mana level level was 1002 right from his birth. Even as a newborn, Haruto was already powerful enough to defeat a fenrir, who mistook him for the Demon King because of his colossal magical power.
  • Happily Adopted: After he was abandoned by the royal family right after his birth, Gold Zenfis adopted him as his son and gave him a comfortable life at his mansion. His adopted mother and sister also treat him well.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: He's done this twice. First Flay thinks he's the Demon King reincarnate, then Char thinks he's a Hero of Justice. Both times he just went along with it.
  • Swiss Army Super Power: As he lacks an element, the only magic he can use is barrier magic, but he can do a lot of things with it.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Everyone, including Haruto himself thinks his mana level is just 2 because the measuring devices used to measure mana levels can only go up to two digits. It's actually 1,002, much higher than any human has ever had before.

Click here to see her fenrir form

A flame fenrir Haruto met and tricked into becoming his servant.

  • Buxom Beauty Standard: An omake shows the other maids envy her large breasts.
  • Cool Big Sis: While her skills as a maid are lacking (when she isn’t using modern household appliances), she’s nonetheless seen as this by the other maids, as someone who’s dedicated to her work, but doesn’t take crap from anyone. Charlotte views her as something like this as well.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: When she first found Haruto as a baby, she tried to eat him, but Haruto easily overpowered her. Impressed by his monstrous magical power and good will to spare her, Flay came to see him as her master and pledged loyalty to him.
  • Epic Fail: When she tries to teach Liza the basics of her recently-acquired job as a maid for the Zenfis family, Flay fails at each task she attempts to teach Liza, whereas Liza becomes an Instant Expert on her first try for each task as a maid.
  • Fiery Redhead: Her hair/fur is blazing red, and her personality is quite impulsive and short-tempered.
  • Hidden Depths: Flay is the one who came up with the idea for the "freed" (for a lack of a better term) summoned-monsters to make a village, for non-hostile monsters to live.
  • Hot in Human Form: She's a giant wolf with the ability to transform into a gorgeous young red-haired woman.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Since she's a fenrir, she doesn't wear clothes in her true form. When she first transforms into a humanoid, she's stark naked, causing a flustered Haruto to ask her to put some clothes on. She then puts on a skintight bodysuit, but Haruto thinks that just makes her look even more sexy.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Her human form keeps her wolf ears and tail.
  • Meido: She works as a maid at the Zenfis household to look after Haruto.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Over the years, Flay has managed to subdue, persuade, and rehouse every intelligent monster within the Zenfis Marquisate, gathering them all in the village of Pandemonium. This both vastly increases the security and quality of life in the territory, while allowing the monsters to survive and thrive, rather than inherently coming into conflict with each other due to competition over resources and land, and the humans' natural distrust of monsterfolk.
  • Naked on Arrival: When she transforms into her humanoid form in an attempt to feed Haruto (who was a baby at the time) breast milk, she has no clothing on.
  • Spy Catsuit: As mentioned above in Innocent Fanservice Girl, Haruto creates some clothes for her to wear. Although he didn’t intend for it to be a black skintight bodysuit. She kept the suit and used it later when accompanying Haruto in his Black Knight persona.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The passionate Red Oni to Liza's calm Blue Oni. Even their hair and eye colors match their roles.
  • Undying Loyalty: She's very eagerly loyal to Haruto.

    Charlotte Zenfis

Charlotte Zenfis

Haruto's adoptive little sister.

  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: Quickly becomes this after Haruto introduces her to the world of anime, she often loves cosplaying as a Magical Girl, much to Haruto and Flay's ire.
  • Formal Characters Use Keigo: She's the daughter of a count and speaks in very formal linguistics at all times, up to using the highly formal pronoun "watakushi".
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has blonde hair and is one of the most innocent and good-willed of the characters. She often acts as Reinhart's conscience, compelling him to do good and fight evildoers simply because he doesn't want to shatter her image of him as a hero of justice.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She's an innocent young girl with bright blue eyes.
  • Innocent Prodigy: Not only is she sweet, adorable, and slightly naive, but she’s also one of the most intelligent individuals in the entire world. She’s written magical theories that are several decades ahead of their time, and has made a (secret) name for herself in the researching community, all before reaching the age of 12.
  • Little Sister Heroine: She's one of the heroines and potential love interests for Haruto, as well as his adopted little sister.
  • Morality Pet: For Reinhart. He took up "pretending" to be a super-hero, just to make her happy.
  • Not Blood Siblings: She and Haruto were raised as siblings, but they aren't blood related. She has a crush on him, but Haruto only sees her as his sister.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's an adorable young child who's constantly roped into Haruto's schemes, or inversely, drags him into it.

    Gold Zenfis

Gold Zenfis

Haruto's adopted father.

  • Good Parents: Despite his gruff demeanor, he genuinely loves his two children and has raised them splendidly. Not only has he shown Haruto the love his biological parents never did, treating him no different from Charlotte, he has also done his best to train him despite his son's apparently complete lack of magical abilities and tendency to laze around. He also enables both of them to grow on their own, tolerating their various hijinks and adventures, and tends to respect their preferences (for instance, allowing Haruto to take in Liza and Flay as maids, and even deferring to his wishes not to attend school until the King essentially forced his hand).
  • Happily Married: Much like with his children, his relationship with his wife is that of complete trust and love.
  • Secret-Keeper: He was one of the first humans to realize Haruto's real Magic Level had to be more than the "02" let on. Also, while he is often wrong with the end assumptions, Gold has at least some idea that Haruto is connected to the Black Knight Shiva taking care of the bandits.

    Natalia Zenfis

Natalia Zenfis

Voiced by: Yūko Gotō (Japanese), Jenny Ledel (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/natalia_zenfis.png

Haruto's adopted mother.

  • Good Parents: Like her husband, Natalia has given to Haruto the same love and kindness she's given to Charlotte, and cares very much for the both of them; and, while she would like them to forge a true sibling bond (and ends up being incredibly happy when Charlotte finally starts accepting Haruto), she refuses to rush the matter, opting to allow them both to try and develop their relationship freely, with no meddling. It's certainly a change of pace from Haruto's original parents, and especially his cruel snake of a mother.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Like her daughter, Natalia has blonde hair and a kind heart.
  • Happily Married: Like Gold, she seems perfectly content in her married life, and supports and loves her family.
  • Motherly Side Plait: She's a gentle mother wearing a loose braid over her right shoulder.

The Royal Family

    Giselotte Orteus

Giselotte Orteus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/giselotte_orteus.png

The queen consort and Haruto's birth mother.

  • Arc Villain: For the first arc, she is the mastermind behind the attempts on Char's life.
  • Ax-Crazy: She becomes even more unhinged after Haruto places the slave collar on her.
  • Evil Matriarch: She's Haruto's birth mother, and his first main nemesis.
  • Fallen Hero: Known as the "Flash Princess", she once slayed the Demon King.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: She wears a form-fitting dress that's open to well below her navel.
  • Parental Abandonment: She had Haruto cast out and abandoned in the woods due to his (supposedly) low mana level.
  • Restraining Bolt: After defeating her, Haruto puts a slave collar on her that will decapitate her if she makes another attempt to assassinate Char or tries to remove it.
  • Stripperiffic: Her regal attire is a ballroom gown with a massive slit right down the front that exposes her cleavage, midriff and underwear.

    Laius Orteus

Laius Orteus

Voiced by: Shinnosuke Tachibana (Japanese), Justin Briner (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/laius_orteus.png

The crown prince, and Haruto's actual younger brother.

  • Break the Haughty: The first time they met, Haruto utterly trounced him in a magic duel.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He's clearly bulked up a lot in preparation for his rematch against Haruto.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Downplayed. When first introduced, Laius was borderline Hate Sink, but once the Magic School arc comes about, while not pleasant, he seems to see Haruto as a rival, rather than a hated target.

    Marianne Orteus

A teacher at the academy who takes an interest in Haruto.

  • Brainy Brunette: She has brown hair and is a genius professor researching Ancient Magic.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: As obsessive, erratic and unsociable as she is, there is no doubt that she is a brilliant researcher.
  • Grade Skipper: She's a genius who repeatedly skipped grades during her student days.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a strand sticking up from her hair, indicating her quirkiness.
  • In-Series Nickname: She is called "Tear" by those around her.
  • Older Than She Looks: She looks much younger than she really is.
  • Playful Cat Smile: Her default expression is a cat-like smile, fitting her energetic personality.
