Energy Division

Alpha Team

    In General
  • Anti-Hero: At best. They often have other ridiculous priorities over preserving the nation’s power grid, with Mason and Tommy Lampshade Hanging this in the first episode.
Mason: We never do the the right thing.
Tommy: I know right, like that one time I killed that old guy in real life.
  • Author Avatar: Eddie, Buck, Tommy, and Mason are all based heavily on their respective voice actor, with VanossGaming, Terroriser, BasicallyIDoWrk, and WILDCAT voicing each of them respectively, to the point where they even have Alliterative Names with their real life voice actors (Eddie and Evan, Buck and Brian, Tommy and Tyler, and Mason and Marcel respectively). The most noticeable difference is probably that Eddie is Caucasian (or at the very least appears to be), while his voice actor Vanoss is Asian-Canadian.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Episode 2 reveals that in the Time Skip, the team split up after Allison decommissioned them in favor of Bravo Team, with Eddie in partcular running off in a Heroic BSoD.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: They're four twenty-something gamers who are way too immature to be saving the world, yet somehow are genuinely good at their jobs. It's Deconstructed with The Reveal that their immaturity is precisely why their boss Allison wants to fire them—except, since they get good results, that alone isn't a proper excuse and Allison has had to resort to more underhanded methods to try and fire them.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Phlegmatic: Eddie
    • Choleric: Buck
    • Sanguine: Tommy
    • Melancholic: Mason
  • Tuckerization: Each of their names starts with the first letter of their voice actor's real life names. Eddie and Mason more so, as their last names sound similar to their real last names (Eddie Long/Evan Fong, Mason Giggleham/Marcel Cunningham).

    Eddie

Eddie Long

Voiced by: Evan "VanossGaming" Fong

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Whatever feelings he has for Ruby, she does not reciprocate. At least until the season finale where she gives him a kiss on the cheek.
  • Ambiguously Bi: He's got a not-so-subtle crush on Ruby, but at the same time he and his allies have made a sex doll of Stephen.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: At one point an in-game prostitute is being used as a Human Shield by Two Buck Chuck. Eddie didn't have the heart to Shoot the Hostage despite said hostage being a virtual entity and the Area 51 power grid being at stake. He did however put his talents as a "floor is lava" player to good use. The prostitute was Emily from Bravo Team, though nobody else would've known at the time, and dying in-game is hardly an issue.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Outside of Alpha Team, nobody really likes Eddie. Not his boss Allison, not his crush Ruby, and certainly not the government auditor Darryl. As The Stinger reveals, this extends to even other corners of Energy Division, given there's a whole other team (specifically Bravo Team) willing to risk the world just to sabotage him and the team.
  • Heroic BSoD: In the second episode, it's revealed he suffered from one as a result of Allison decommissioning Alpha Team, leaving on a "vision quest", or rather, to work a dead-end job at Best Buy.
  • It's All About Me: Seems to place himself on a pedestal over his teammates, and tends to act the most entitled about their job.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Downplayed. For all his Comedic Sociopath tendencies, he has a massive case of Chronic Hero Syndrome and cares enough to take his job at least somewhat seriously compared to his teammates.
  • The Leader: Takes charge of the team and is (on the surface) the most dedicated to the job on the team.
  • Not So Above It All: While Eddie is usually the member who focuses the most on the mission at hand, he isn't immune to partaking in shenanigans with the rest of the Alpha Team.
  • Token Good Teammate: Downplayed, since he and the others are clearly a group of antiheroes and they, as Mason puts it, "never do the right thing". Anyone else on his team would have probably killed Jane to shoot Two-Buck Chuck, remembering she was an NPC as far as they knew who could be reset afterward. However, Eddie didn't have the heart to do so, even if it meant Area 51 would lose power. Instead, he opted to play "Don't Touch The Floor" using bandit corpses to save her.
    • In addition, he's the only member of the group who didn't take part in the "sabotage people's luggage" prank, and wanted to just open the door instead of trying to open it via weird, complex means that ended up causing destruction or breaking the law.

    Buck

Buck O'Sullivan McGillicuddy

Voiced by: Brian "Terroriser" Hanby

Explosives expert, speaks before he thinks.

  • Berserk Button: He's really self-conscious about his thin legs.
  • The Big Guy: As the explosives/weapons expert and the most openly emotionally-charged member of the team.
  • Cross Player: Because of the game Left 4 Head assigning the group random body types, he's stuck with a skimpy female body for the remainder of the mission in episode 3.
  • Demolitions Expert: Very fond of blowing stuff up, to a point where its his official job on the team.
  • Fighting Irish: Stated to be Irish, and is quite dangerous when angered, to the point where Tommy notes "He’s about to go full Irish" when he’s on the verge of murdering an NPC giving him trouble, considering he's voiced by Terroriser who is Irish himself, this is a given.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: Immediately drops a "Fuck you!" to Allison upon being described as the above.

    Tommy

Tommy Turdler

Voiced by: Tyler "WILDCAT" Wine

Driver, pompous know-it-all.

  • Alliterative Name: Tommy Turdler.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Shows a romantic attraction to Captain Whaler in “The Filthy Password”.

  • Animals Hate Him: Despite being the transportation specialist, he can't ride a horse to save his life, to the point where he makes all efforts to avoid having to ride one. When he does try, the "save his life" part ends up being played literally as his Avatar gets his head stomped in by the horse.
  • The Driver: The vehicles specialist of the team. However, as his interview episode revealed, it's Subverted as he cannot drive for his life in real life, and only has extensive knowledge of driving and cars thanks to video games. In fact, he applied for a Transportation Director job solely due to his knowledge, visibly having an Oh, Crap! expression upon realizing there's a driving test.
  • Honor Before Reason: Even if he has NO clue to what he's doing or awareness that he cannot do something that someone's asking him to do, he's going to try it anyways regardless of how bad it ends.
Tommy: (After failing a driver's test) Because I'd rather die than admit I can't do something, okay?
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Described by Allison as a "pompous know-it-all" and is frequently shown to be a fair assessment.
  • Pungeon Master: He’s implied to be this quite often, with Ruby complimenting him for his pun making.
  • The Smart Guy: Consistently shown to be the smartest member of the team and is even stated to be a know-it-all. And in his interview, he shows an extensive amount of knowledge of various cars that he learned from video games.

    Mason

Mason Giggleham

Voiced by: Marcel "BasicallyIDoWrk" Cunningham

Ballistics, thinks sarcasm is a personality trait.

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: While being interrogated for his interview, he manages to point off all the flaws in the logic of kidnapping him for the interrogation, in particular the heavy consequences that would occur if Agent Morales shot him as a result of an earlier analysis.
Mason: "Plus, that tie looks like you bought it at Rite-Aid, so I'm assuming you guys didn't spring for the bulletproof drywall? You got hollow points in there? Doesn't matter. That bullet is strong enough to pass through my skull, the wall, the vending machine on the other side of it, and at least two members of your underpaid support staff."
  • Berserk Button: Anything that is or is implied to be racist, as he was quite irritated with Code Black alerts being the worst, and outright shot an NPC on a train who complained about him not being in a black car. And when he's kidnapped for his interview, the first thing he brings up?
Mason: Because it's 2022, and you just kidnapped a black guy.
  • Black Dude Dies First: In the pilot, after jumping off the train and impaling himself on a cactus. Needless to say he wasn't impressed with the circumstances after being booted out of the game.
  • Deadpan Snarker: The very first thing he does upon being introduced to Darryl with the rest of Alpha Team is to make a quick Leaning on the Fourth Wall joke. And in his interview video, he's constantly snarking off to the interviewers as he slowly gets into their heads before managing to take the gun from Agent Conklin.
  • The Lancer: The most openly abrasive member of the team with also the most contrasting personality compared to the other three.
  • No Kill like Overkill: His method to open the door for Stephen without touching the floor? Call the SWAT Team to their house on claims of a "grundle assault".

Other Employees

    Allison

Voiced by: Paget Brewster (Pilot), Kate Thulin (episode 2 onward)

  • All for Nothing: The second episode reveals she successfully replaced Alpha Team with Bravo Team... However, they, along with any other team she tried to deploy in Alpha Team's place in the following 18 months, were unable to successfully do the job.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Not that she's very nice to the Alpha Team in general, but the end of the first episode reveals that Allison is covertly trying to sabotage them on their missions, meaning that she's willing to let the world suffer just so she can finally have an excuse to fire them.
  • Mr. Exposition: She's the one who explains everything about the world of Alpha Betas to Darryl in the pilot episode.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Usually can be heard groaning over Alpha Team's ridiculous antics, pointing out to Ruby that her problem with them is how they solve things despite them getting the job done. This gets to the point where she outright tries to sabotage their mission with Bravo Team just so she can fire and replace them.

    Stephen

Voiced by: Brent Morin

  • Ambiguously Gay: As stated below, he takes quite well to learning that Alpha Team made a sex doll of him, He is also shown to have a crush on Tommy, both in show and origin comics. That said, his Robotic Reveal definitely complicates things.
  • Nice Guy: Usually takes quite well to Alpha Team's antics in comparison to the other employees. He even doesn't mind learning that they outright made a sex doll of him, even appreciating it a bit.
  • Robotic Reveal: The end of the pilot episode reveals him to be cybernetic in nature. He's even able to convert himself into a vacuum.

    Ruby

Agent Ruby Ortiz

Voiced by: Stephanie Beatriz

    Spoiler Characters

Bravo Team

An opposing team to Alpha Team consisting of Edgelord (real name Tanner), Emily, Sammy, and an as-of-yet unnamed fourth member.

Voiced by: Brent Morin, Paget Brewster

  • Aborted Arc: After the first episode, the team doesn't appear at all, with Allison revealing that in the Time Skip they, along with several other teams she tried to employ, failed to replace Alpha Team.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Edgelord does not like being reminded of his first name, Tanner.
  • Evil Counterpart: While a stretch to call Alpha Team "heroic", they serve as this to them.
    • Edgelord, much like Eddie, is the self-obsessed leader of his respective team who gets no respect, but whereas Eddie will still do the right thing in spite of his sociopathy (even if it's just to satisfy his own ego), Edgelord is willing to endanger the entire world just to go along with Allison's plan to fire Alpha Team.
  • Out of Focus: The unnamed fourth member (The Big Guy with a headband) is the only one in the pilot to not have a speaking role, and his role in sabotaging Alpha Team in Red Head Intervention is unknown, unlike his teammates (Edgelord was Two-Buck Chuck, Emily was Jane the Prostitute, and Sammy was one of Chuck's henchmen).
  • Villainous Crush: Edgelord seems to have one on Emily. The way he comments on her acting as Jane the Prostitute is suggestive of a jealous boyfriend, but Emily reveals they aren't dating.
  • Walking Spoiler: Considering their existence is revealed at the very end of the Pilot Episode along with the truth of Allison's intentions with Alpha Team, it's pretty hard not to talk about them without discussing this.
