    The Protectorate

Grey Crestwell

The Hero of the story, a Self-Insert who was placed within the body of the Protector Veteran Officer Grey Crestwell.
  • Anti-Hero: Certainly has shades of this - Word of God on the story's Discord forum has noted that Grey is cynical enough that, were he to end up in the Star Wars universe, he'd be fine with allowing a non-evil person to reform The Republic in The Empire because he views the Republic as Beyond Redemption and that there are too many factors that Grey had to look out for in order to pull it off.
  • Anti-Magic: Grey literally nullifies any magic around him by virtue of existing. Supplementary materials indicate he is a null, who are completely immune to any magical effects around them.
  • Author Avatar: As a Self Insert, this is a given.
  • Badass Normal: The only abnormal thing about Grey is his immunity to magic. Otherwise, he's just a baseline human being relying on highly advanced technology to beat all kinds of monsters. So far, he hasn't really had any major losses.
  • Blessed with Suck: His Null status is this - while it makes him immune to magical attacks, it also prevents him from being healed by magic, and permanently locks him out of being able to access aura.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Is one for self inserts - the sheer amount of crap Grey has to deal with has eroded his own idealism, and it's implied he's willing to make some immoral decisions for the sake of saving others. Additionally, he's also perfectly willing to abandon people he could save simply because the effort needed to save them is unreasonable (granted, the one instance where this happened in story was completely justified, but still).
  • Everyone Has Standards: Word of God is that Grey would understand the motives of the Reunion Movement, but would not support them since they are a case of He Who Fights Monsters.
  • Fake Memories: Grey doesn't remember how he became a Self-Insert and feels that his memories were not of his own. His memories were clearly removed and replaced with the body that he got put into.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When the reports of how utterly outnumbered they were before the invasion of Lescatie, how the entire city-state was infiltrated by so many collaborators and how Druella had done enough to send corrupt food in the city without detection, Grey did not hold any illusions that the place was defensible. Instead, he planned an evacuation that will save as many uncorrupted humans as possible.
  • No Sympathy: This is one of Gray's negative traits - he's generally unwilling to show respect for people who have committed horrible crimes regardless of their reasons for doing so. While this would be understandable in some cases, he bluntly makes it clear in a post made regarding Arknights that he considers anyone old enough to kill old enough to be accountable for their actions...even if they are a child (e.g. Skullshatterer).
  • Unscrupulous Hero: Grey may be The Hero of the story, but he’s willing to perform some questionable acts, per Word of God. Amongst others, Extra confirmed on Discord that he would not really do anything to save the Galactic Republic, partially because there isn’t really anything Grey could do to stop the Rise of the Empire, but mostly because Extra thinks the Republic deserved to turn into the Empire because it of its massive corruption.

Helios Olympus

The Interim Commander of the Protector Corps and Headmaster of the Protector Academy.
  • The Spymaster: In his profile, Helios once worked as the head of the Protectorate Intelligence Corps and had a decent track record during his tenure. He then retired from it to pursue his passion in teaching and science.
  • You Are in Command Now: After the fall of Earth and Sol, he got promoted to Commander by default. He's trying to look for people to help him handle the influx of responsibilities that he had to deal with. He's also running the Protector Academy and the Research and Development division as well since he's the only one left qualified to do the job.

Erica Einstein

The Deuteragonist of the story, she is a young woman who is a rookie Protector under the tutorship of Gray Crestwell.
  • Deuteragonist
  • Hero of Another Story: While Erica occasionally joins Gray on his adventures, she also does the story quests of Starbound, making her this.
  • The Reveal: She actually is the daughter of Ethan Wendell Einstein, one of the pioneering shipwrights ever produced by the Protectorate.

Baqi Sindile

Erica's bodyguard and the retainer of the Einstein family for years.

    Royal Makai

The Incubus Hero

A former hero of The Order of the Chief God, who was tasked with slaying the 12th Demon Lord, which he did....and then married Demon Lord #13.
  • Classic Villain: He ticks many aspects.
  • Fallen Hero: While he wasn't the most heroic when a member of the order, he still helped save a great many people. But after marrying the Demon Lord, he becomes complicit in the genocide of humanity, the dwarves, the elves, and the fairies.
  • Fatal Flaw: Despite being associated with Lilith, his is actually Sloth - he doesn't like having responsibility at all, and it's outright stated he chose to team up with Lilith because her path was easier.
  • Hate Sink: There are absolutely no sympathetic traits associated with the Incubus Hero - he's a lazy, overpowered JErkass who let's his ID do the thinking.
  • It's All About Me: Big time - he always seems to put his own needs before those of others, and then deludes himself into believing he is doing the right thing.
  • Never My Fault: His own conscience outright indicates that he has trouble accepting responsibility for his actions. Case in point, he refuses to admit he made the wrong choice by siding with Lilith and enacting her plan to achieve peace between human and Mamono (which will result in the inevitable extinction of both species). He also blame's the death of one of Druella's Grey Dolls (sex dolls made in the likeness of the SI) on said doll for losing control of its powers, forgetting that he never bothered to discipline his daughter, who literally rapes the dolls into sentience.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: He thought marrying the Demon Lord (named Lilith per Word of God) would help achieve peace between humans and monsters. He instead put them on the path of extinction. He really doesn't care.
