A Protector Is You is a Fanfic by TheExtraNatural.

Written in the style of Commander Self Inserts and Factory Isolation, the story follows Grey after he is forcibly dumped into the Starbound universe by a Random Omnipotent Being. After Earth was destroyed when the Ruin's fragment was summoned there, Grey and the rest of the refugees of Earth ended up on a different side of the galaxy where they are tasked to rebuild the Protectorate and guide as many of survivors of the fall to their new home. Then Grey discovered the Ancient Gateway that led him to many places. The moment the Gateway activated its property as a multiversal hub, things start to get weird.

This work contains examples of:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Druella badly wants Grey to be her husband. She's a succubus who's actively committing genocide against mankind by forcing them into a situation where female humans will cease to exist. Grey rather blatantly does not like her and has attempted to kill her (with the only reasons that he hasn't being a. the first time he almost got gang raped by Druella's minions and b. there's a good chance the Demon Lord would actually leave Royal Makai to kill him if that happened).
  • Abusive Parents: While this was alreayd the case with Wilmarina and Merse's parents, this story also shows that the Demon Lord and the Incubus Hero are ones to Repine - due to being unable to understand that why Repine was unhappy when a group of humans committed suicide rather than become Mamono, they ended up abusing her enough emotionally that she ran away from home. The Demon Lord still doesn't realize this, but the Incubus Hero is aware on some level of his mistakes. Not that he owes up to them, though.
  • Alternate Universe: In the version of Remmant that Grey visits, Menagerie has gone from a 'Faunus Preserve' to The Fifth Kingdom of Remnant due to a Human Colony ship from Starbound crashlanded at Remnant at some time prior and uplifting the Faunus residents there..
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: For most of the Royal Makai Line and their followers, a perfect world is one where people/monsters are having sex nonstop until the day that they die, and maybe even past that, given that there are undead mamono. The fact that other beings might not consider this paradise is completely alien to them. Case in point, after being defeated by Grey and having her ideals deconstructed by him, Druella spends the next few weeks pleasuring herself with Grey Dolls, presumably to build up power to turn Grey to her side.
  • Calling a Rabbit a "Smeerp": In the Monster Girl Encyclopedia world, Monster Girls are referred to as mamono.
  • The Corruption: Demonic Energy is this in the MGE World - it infects humans and monsters, gradually turning girls and monsters into mamono and men into incubi, whilst also massively up their libido. Grey is currently looking into ways to stop its spread and reverse its effects.
  • Crapsack World:
    • The Monster Girl Encyclopedia world was stuck in a never ending conflict between humans and monsters because the Chief God wanted to prevent humans from overpopulating and to leech off from humanity's faith and belief. The situation has somehow gotten WORSE following the ascension of the Thirteenth Demon Lord, a Succubus whose solution to the problem was to turn all other monsters into Monster Girls and replace the inbuilt instinct to kill humans with 'reproduce using human males'. As no new human children are produced by this, it means mankind will eventually be bred out of existence. The Demon Lords only issue with this is that no male monsters (e.g. Incubi) are being produced from these couplings, meaning that, even if she fixes that problem, mankind is still doomed. It doesn't help that the past Demon Lords were trying to find a way to break the cycle until they were thwarted by the Order. The Tenth Demon Lord for instance tried to ascend to Godhood in order to end the cycle of war while the Twelfth Demon Lord tried to commit to a mass exodus plan but got foiled hard by both the Incubus Hero and the Succubus.
    • The KanColle universe isn't the best example of this, since the Abyssals have only just made their appearance, but unless they are beaten back, the world is in serious trouble.
    • Remnant is plagued by hordes of soulless monsters that want to destroy mankind, which are so powerful that only five major powers exist on the planet in the form of isolated kingdoms surrounded by innumerable Grimm.
  • Crapsaccharine World: Lescatie and Royal Makai are this in the MGE World. The former appeared to be a shining city dedicated to the order, but in reality was ruled by decadent nobles who treated its protectors as crap. After its conquest by Druella, it was turned into a ruin of rampant sex and debauchery. As for Royal Makai, the city is the embodiment of the Demon Lord's ideal world, where mamono can live in peace with their incubi husbands and have sex to their hearts content. This has the side effect of producing so much DE that it has functionally eliminated all nutritional value from the food and water in the area to the point that the only reason it hasn't collapsed from starvation and/or dehydration is that a group of elementals is propping it up, and it's only a matter of time before their strength runs out.
  • Deader than Dead: When the last town that Repine tried to conquer committed mass suicide to avoid monsterization, they made sure to do so in a way that prevented them from being raised from the dead.
  • Defector from Decadence:
    • There are factions and individuals that refuse to join either the Order or the Demon Lord's side that counts as this. The most notable faction that refuses to join the two aformentioned sides would be Agiptos and its leader, Pharaoh Hatshepsut who found out how the Demon Realm encouraged its archnemesis to conquer the Desert Nations and defile the Pharaohs there.
    • Repine left the Demon Realm, abandoned everything and became a hermit until Grey found her and Zyagem, an Ancient Dragon who woke up for so long and found out that she slept through three Demon Lords due to her injuries.
    • When First and the other Phantom Knights came to sentience, their first thoughts were to leave Royal Makai and hate Druella for how she brought them to life.
  • Dying as Yourself: An entire town committed mass suicide as opposed to allowing them to be converted into Mamono and Incubi by Repine. This is what led to her Heel Realization.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good:
    • Druella from the MGE World literally cannot understand why Grey does not want to be her husband, or why her attempts to appeal to his lust and greed completely fall flat. The idea that a human would be entirely willing to give up personal power and physical pleasure in order to help others does not compute for her.
    • An omake indicates this applies to just about all monster girls follow the Radicals, the Church of Eros and Aphrodite and/or Royal Makai's line - the followers of Eros and Aphrodite spread flyers claiming that the 'Black Demon' is merely an unloved man that needs to know the touch of a mamono. Other mamonos who knew better know that there's more to Grey than just an unloved murderer.
  • Face–Heel Turn: On the snippets made by one of the posters that were made canon, The Incubus Hero's betrayal was something that his party did not expect and can be seen as horrifying. The fact that the Incubus Hero did this in order to stay together with his friends by marrying the three girls (Amelia the Warrior, Terra the Mage and Celes the Priestess) after the Succubus turned them into mamonos by force and forced a harem on the other guy in the party despite the fact that the guy (Locke the Thief) loves the Priestess of the party made him the most hated man alive. Even worse, it's all but outright stated that he allowed his friends to be ravished by mamono until they transformed when it became apparent that passive exposure to DE would not turn them. The Incubus Hero's conscience never let him live down the fact that he destroyed his friends' lives forever.
  • Fallen Hero: The Incubus Hero, as mentioned above under Face–Heel Turn. Once the shining paragon of the Gods, he's now the right hand man of the Demon Lord. Okay, the truth is more complex - the two instances we see inside the Incubus Hero's head indicate he wasn't exactly heroic to begin with. For starters, he had an enormous ego due to the Gods (well, at least the Chief God(dess)) giving him an aura that caused people to shower him with adoration. His party, as well as the Succubus that would become the Thirteenth Demon Lord, were immune to this, though, and said party were, according to his conscious, the only ones who made the hero business worthwhile. Despite this, the Incubus Hero was still a selfish person, and when he was offered the opportunity to get rid of the Twelfth Demon Lord and get a hot wife out of it, he went for it. When he offered to his friends a deal that would allow them all to stay together as rulers of the Demon Realm alongside him and the Thirteenth Demon Lord and they disagreed, things got ugly. He also has an epic case of Never My Fault, and refuses to admit that he has fallen. Like, at all.
  • Foil: Grey is this to the various Commanders (Drich, Fusou, Faith, Gamma, and Flame) - whilst the latter have the technology to wage multiversal wars to try and fix the various universes they end up in, Grey must rely on a comparatively lesser tech base, has to limit himself to fixing universes one world at a time, ask help from his allies and friends that gathered at Haven and has to answer to superiors. He's also just a human with a few augments on him and a few tricks up his sleeves that cannot spawn massive armies at a breakneck pace. The comparison is increasingly Downplayed in regards to Flame, though, because the latter has gradually ended up having similar things happen to him (needing the aid of others, answering to a superior, and so on).
  • Foreshadowing: There's a number of these littered in the story.
    • During the invasion of Lescatie, Druella muses on how one Order aligned city committed suicide to avoid turning into mamono/incubi. Several chapters later, it's revealed that this was the city Repine was sent to conquer, and that this was the event that led her to abandon her family.
    • Grey's ability to ignore all magic effects thrown at him and at the same time, prevent him from acquiring supernatural powers like Aura from RWBY. It is implied that Grey's a Null in one of the informational snippets and on some of the non-canon omakes.
  • The Gadfly: Grey once asked Merse if she has a crush on Elt, which caused her to drink often. She replies by trying to punch him while cursing like a sailor with a blushing face.
  • The Grim Reaper: Hades and Hel of the MGE World count as this but they Subverted the trope as well due to how they're different compared to the usual Grim Reaper personality. Though unlike the latter, Hades absolutely hates people disrespecting the dead by willingly turning them to undead and really hates Hel for letting the undead go rampant after she usurped his throne in the Underworld and kicked him and his wife Persephone out.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Repine, once supporting the goals of her mother, the Demon Lord, is now a hermit living in a desert. She helped Grey in defeating the resurrected Tenth Demon Lord.
  • Hypocrite: The Demon Lord wants world peace and happiness for humans and Mamono alike yet she doesn't do anything except sleeping with her husband, leaving the poor citizens of Royal Makai to suffer abject poverty.
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: Whilst Druella was already interested in him, Grey's inability to be affected by her charms just makes her want him even more. Played With, though, because it's clear that she intends to dominate him if he ever sides with her.
  • Innocently Insensitive: The Thirteenth Demon Lord was this in regards to her daughter Repine after a town committed suicide rather than become a demon realm. She chastises her daughter for not thinking to convert them into zombies in order to let them experience the joy of becoming mamono, completely missing the point Repine was trying to get across - they willing chose to kill themselves rather than submit to the Demon Lord in any manner. This is ultimately what led to Repine abandoning her mother's cause.
    • She also seems to ignore the fact that the townspeople went to lengths to ensure they could not be resurrected.
  • I Reject Your Reality: Druella literally believes that the true desire of all humans is to have sex all day long, and rejects any information that would suggest otherwise. The fact that her existence actively alters reality to conform to her views just adds to her total divorcement from reason. Consequently, she has issues when she meets Grey, who not only completely rejects her views, but is somehow totally immune to her charms.
  • Jerkass Gods: The overwhelming majority of the gods in the Monster Girl Encyclopedia world have sided with the Demon Lord and her plan to convernt all humans into either mamono or incubi (which will eventually end in their inevitable extinction) and the only one still on the side of humans, the Chief God, is not only a newbie but is also weak to act and is slowly going nuts thanks to the injuries and the zealous faith given to the newbie god. The Original Chief god is the reason the current demon lord is a problem after setting up the cycle!
  • Just Before the End: The MGE World is this - by the time Grey arrives, the world is functionally dying due to the Mamono, and Word of God is that Royal Makai will eventually collapse when its elementals run out of power.
  • Karmic Transformation: The Queen of Lescatie ends up becoming a Roper following Druella's siege. For extra Irony, not only was this the canonical fate of her daughter (who she treated like crap), but it also means that, however much she wants to, she will never be able to have another child.
  • Love Triangle: Occurred between Elt, Wilmarina, and Primera; the two former heroes have a relationship with the same man.
  • Malicious Slander: The Greenclaw Amazons claim that Grey was a savage who slaughtered innocent Amazons on sight and abducted innocent humans. One Mamono asks Grey who he is, and when he confirms that he is 'the Black Demon', she notes the Amazons were lying.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
  • Nay-Theist: Grey is this rather than being a Hollywood Atheist, since he has been to settings where gods do exist, he just doesn't see any reason to worship them (barring the Cultivator, and that one doesn't even need worship to begin with)!
  • Never My Fault: The Incubus Hero absolutely refuses to believe he was in the wrong regarding siding with the Demon Lord, and instead feels that his friends were at fault for not joining him willingly. In reality, though, he DOES feel guilty over it, but it's only now that his guilt has finally reached the point where he has to confront it.
  • No Kill like Overkill: The first time Grey fights Amazons, he ends up winning the fight by hitting them with a ROCKET LAUNCHER. The second time, he upgrades to DUMPING LAVA ON THEM. Both times this is Justified: the first time around, Grey doesn't have anything else that will take the Amazons out of the fight due to their Healing Factor, and the second time, the leader of the tribe was given Divine Intervention that let her tank the previous overkill like it was nothing.
  • Not Quite the Almighty: Both the current Chief God and the Creator are this. The former was injured by the Thirteenth Demon Lord and the Incubus Hero after they nuked the Celestial Realm with the Twelfth Demon Lord's magical nuke superweapon and took out a lot of gods in the process. The Creator on the other hand, had to deal with a multiversal threat and was severely weakened after defeating it. It didn't help that the Chief Gods invaded the world the Creator is protecting while she recovers and decimated a lot of her angels when they tried to defend it from them while the Creator was in a coma.
  • Nuclear Mutant: Within the story, Demonic Energy (the stuff that converts monsters and human females into mamono and males into incubi) is a type of radiation. Thus, all monster girls can be considered a type of radioactive mutant.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: The Siege of Lescatie ends this way for Druella - while she is able to conquer the kingdom and corrupt the whole royal family and majority of the nobility (Francisca being the exception), Zyagem completely torches the city, leaving Druella to rule over the ashes. She does NOT take this well.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Grey by and large has issues with killing, but he will gladly stain his hands with blood if the aggressors into to use their targets as Sex Slaves, as many Mamono find out the hard way.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Grey gives one to Druella as the Battle of Lescatie comes to an end, telling her that her mother's so called ideal world is just a pathetic, shallow imitation of life, where people will never be able to enjoy life beyond sexual gratification. While the speech certainly has an impact on her, in no way does she understand Grey's point of view, and thus she learns absolutely nothing from it.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: The Fluffalo, a mix of sheep and buffalo which is one of cattle raised in Haven. Popular among the children population.
  • Sex Equals Love: This is pretty much what the Royal Makai Line of Mamono and their forces think - if you are having sex with your partner and you are enjoying it, then you are in a loving relationship. Grey and co see things....differently.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: In an Omake, the Incubus Hero's conscious does this, calling him out for his complete unwillingness to own up to his actions and accept that his choices might have been wrong. Notably, it involves the optimistic part of his personality strangling him out of disgust for his inability to accept blame
  • Soiled City on a Hill: This becomes the fate of Lescatie - the once thought impregnable city dedicated to the Order is reduced to a rampant pit of sex and debauchery ruled by the lilim Druella. For added symbolism, virtually the entirety of the city was burned to ashes by the dragon Zyagem.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Grey manages to save a total of 7000+ people from the Kingdom of Lescatie. Canonically, the city was turned into a Demon Realm OVERNIGHT and saw all of its citizens turned into either mamono or incubi.
  • Sympathetic P.O.V.: Subverted - the first interlude chapter, told from the point of view of the Amazon Arana (whose tribe Grey practically wiped out to protect the town of Evergreen) appears sympathetic at first, with her anger at Grey for killing her mother, best friend, and mentor, but the interlude also reminds us that the raid was done to capture men for the Amazons to use as 'husbands' (read: Sex Slaves).
  • That Man Is Dead: After she caused an entire population of a settlement to commit suicide, Repine ran away from her home and cast away her old name and identity.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The ruling-classes of Lescatie. They thought that they can win against Druella's forces despite them having Dark Matters, having no problem emotionally abusing their heroes and family members, believing that willpower alone can win against Demonic Energy, and saying that the Protectorates are the ones responsible for the invasion while also impending their evacuation of civilians. They are not only stupid but also dead set in not succeeding where it really matters the most.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • Druella did not take Grey's rejection well - when we see her again in an omake, she's venting her frustration on sex dolls designed in Grey's likeness. She uses them so often that she's actually created an entirely new variety of doll mamono.
    • Her father has a massive one in a response the author made to a now canon omake, where he completely loses it upon hearing that Grey has no regrets over his actions. As the Incubus Hero is finally starting to feel remorse for his choice to side with the Demon Lord, it utterly shatters him, and he can only feebly respond by calling Grey a liar.
  • Was It Really Worth It?: The Incubus Hero grapples with this question in the two canon omakes he appears in, where he questions, for the first time, if his choice to side with the Thirteenth Demon Lord and allow her mamono to rape his former companions into becoming mamono/incubi was the right thing to do. He thinks it was, but his conscience makes it very abundant that no, it was not worth it.
  • We Can Rule Together: Druella tries this with Grey, offering to allow him dominion of Lescatie as her husband. Given that Grey is completely repulsed by her existence, it completely falls flat.
  • You Are in Command Now: Helios Olympus is pretty much promoted from teacher of the Academy to Protector Commander after the loss of the command structure of the Protector Corps during Earth's fall.
