Anguished Declarations of Love in Anime and Manga.

  • Ai Kora features this when Maeda confesses his love for Sakurako at a school assembly as part of a desperate attempt to win her back from her ex-boyfriend. Sakurako doesn't admit she loves him back until the final chapter when Maeda returns from disappearing for four months after accidentally taking a plane to England. In fact, she's so relieved to see him again all she can initially say is "I love you!"
  • In Bleach, Kanae Katagiri invokes the trope on Ryuuken Ishida, as a part of a desperate measure to tell him that he's not a failure to the Ishida clan and that he is not alone. She's successful.
  • Blue Flag: Touma gives one to his long-time same-sex crush, Taichi, about 41 chapters into the manga. He has hidden that fact with all he could up until he was Forced Out of the Closet when a fight broke out, prompting him to decide to just come clean before his plan to leave town. It's clear he is ashamed and sad for saying this, and it was intended as the last thing he ever said to his crush before vanishing from his life.
    "I love you. I'm sorry."
  • Boarding School Juliet: With their Secret Relationship in danger of being exposed because of Romio being put under the watchful eye of his Knight Templar Big Brother, Juliet decided to temporarily break things off with Romio until things cool down. Romio snaps out of a Heroic BSoD after learning she still cared for him, then unleashes chaos in the White Cats dormitory with his fellow Black Dogs just to spend Juliet's 16th birthday with her, getting both hurt and in trouble at the same time. Upon being reunited, she tells him off for all the crap he's pulled before tearfully admitting that she wanted to see him as well. That was also the first time Juliet ever said "I love you" to Romio (something he wanted to hear from her since they started going out), adding more emotional weight to the moment.
  • A Bride's Story: After a moment of insecurity on Karluk’s part, Amir gives him one in chapter sixty-six. He responds in kind.
  • Chobits:
    • In the manga both Chitose and Freya force one out of Hideki for Chii. Even after he confesses his love for her Freya taunts him to make certain he's serious by telling him that Chii's actions and thoughts are only programming and she will never love him back. His response? "Her feelings live in me!" In the anime version, it's changed to a straight declaration of love because it's suggested that her advanced programming DOES give her emotions.
    • Freya herself gave one in the past to her father/creator as the trauma of suppressing her feelings wreaked havoc on her systems.
  • Discussed and Deconstructed in City Hunter. After all, Ryo knows well that when you're about to die an instinctive need for reproduction pops out, so he couldn't trust his own declaration to Kaori until her temporary amnesia gave him time to reflect on his feelings for her and realize that yes, he did love her. At which point he plays it straight.
  • Claudine: Claude passionately declares his love to Cécilia one night, but she rejects him since she can only ever see Claude as a girl.
  • Code Geass:
    • Shirley Fenette had a "knack" for this. Earlier, after a long series of Moment Killers, she finally kissed her crush object, Lelouch, during a dramatic downpour — spurred to action upon learning that her father had died. Most of her "declaration" was silent, but it was definitely "anguished," and she finally made her feelings perfectly clear to the Celibate Hero Lelouch. Too bad things fell apart… and the other time she got to tell him that she loved him, it happened as she lay dying in his arms.
    • While more of a familial declaration of love (maybe), Nunnally tearfully sobs "Oh, Big Brother! I love you!" to Lelouch at the very end of the series, while he lies dying next to her. She makes this confession to the most hated man in the world in public, in front of many live-broadcasting cameras, even before everyone begins to cheer the moment he finally dies. Good thing she was pretty much drowned out by all the people cheering and chanting the name of Lelouch's murderer (Suzaku, who is dressed as Lelouch's alter-ego, Zero), but it's no less heartwrenching to watch Nunnally lay her head on her dead brother's chest and wail in despair, crying about how she only ever wanted to be with him.
  • Cross Ange:
  • Genkaku from Deadman Wonderland confesses to Nagi during his If I Can't Have You… moment where he kills him that he "loved him." Love confession gone very wrong.
  • Nanako to Rei/Saint-Juste in Dear Brother. ("I… I love you! * sob* ")
    • Also subverted by Fukiko, who gives one to Nanako… but it's a fake. And Rei interrupts it, too.
  • The Disappearanceof Nagato Yuki Chan has an Anguished Declaration Of Love which, in a bizarre sense, doubles as a Dying Declaration of Love. Suffering from Dysmnesia as the result of a close call with a car, Nagato has a new personality emerge. She still has access to all of her memories, but feels no emotional connection to them. She comes to understand why her original personality loved Kyon, because she, too, has fallen in love with him. Knowing instinctively that when she falls asleep again, her original personality will reassert itself, she determines to call Kyon and tell him that she loves him. She also has a mental chat with the original Nagato, telling her what she'd done and insisting that original Nagato had the strength to confess her own love.
  • In Element Hunters, Chiara and Rodney argue about her not participating in a dangerous dive and she accidentally corners him into admitting his feelings.
  • Ergo Proxy: Vincent gives Re-l one in Episode 12:
Re-l: What if it's true? No, it's impossible. FP bullets are harmless to humans. Maybe I should shoot his leg. Vincent Law. I think there is some connection between you and the Proxy. That's why I chased you here. You could probably say that I'm drawn to you. Somehow, I found myself thinking about you during our journey. Are you really a proxy? Even so, I need to—
[Vincent grabs Re-l on the arm and throws her down on the bed]
Vincent: I love you. I love you, Re-l. But for an immigrant… No, that's wrong. I mean, for a monster to love you… I thought that I wouldn't see you again. No matter how hard I tried to stop… No matter what, I still love you.
  • Simon, a childhood friend of Erza from Fairy Tail, finds the courage to confess his feelings to her… but only because he's afraid she likes their other friend Jellal. The problem here is that he's on a battlefield in the middle of a rebellion she's leading to save Jellal. His lack of attention to his surroundings while trying to tell her lands him with a busted jaw and missing eye. He almost confesses to her again years later but dies before he can get the words out.
  • In Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA, Sakura gives one to a depressed Shirou, begging him to save himself and run away from the Holy Grail War, declaring that she will abandon everything with him if he does. His Imagine Spot confirms that he reciprocates her feelings, but he ultimately rejects the choice and chooses to fight in order to save his sister.
  • In Fate/stay night, Shirou manages one, after Gilgamesh beats down Saber and practically cuts Shirou in half. Shirou gets up and prepares for another pathetic attempt while Saber pleads for him to save himself.
Saber: What are you doing?! It is impossible! Please stop! I do not need you to save me! Why... Why do you not understand that? No, if you die because of something like this, I—
Shirou: SHUT UP! …just… be quiet for a second… you can rely on others… rely on…
Saber: You're wrong. You're more important than me, your life is more important, so you should take care—"
Shirou: I want you more than anything else! There's not one thing that can replace you. Sorry, I… I like you the most out of everything. So I'm not going to let a guy like him take you!
    • Saber refuses to admit to having any romantic feelings for Shirou, even after their intimate scene; however, her final words to him were: "Shirou… anata wo aishiteru." She uses the stronger and less ambiguous "aishiteru" (the most Serious Business version of "I love you") instead of the more common "suki" (the more informal version, and the one most likely to be used).
  • Fruits Basket:
    • This is the first climax of the main romantic plot. After both characters have accepted their own feelings towards the other but both fearing rejection, Kyo confesses to Tohru that he was there when her mother was hit by the car, that he didn't grab her because he would transform into a cat and that her mother said she would never forgive him. He gives the choice to either forgive him or not and she takes the third option declaring:
Tohru: I have no choice. I have to go against my mother! Okay?! Even with all that. No matter what happens I LOVE YOU KYO-KUN! WHY CAN'T YOU JUST ACCEPT THAT?!
    • Then straight after that she falls off a cliff, tells Kyo to go on without her, he gives her a kiss (she's unconscious by then), but she gets better fortunately.
  • Fushigi Yuugi: Because it was raining, Tamahome just kicked a few asses, Miaka was starting to get sick, and because everyone was on an emotional roller coaster at the time.
  • In Gantz, Kei Kishimoto confesses her love for Kato right at the moment when she takes a lethal blow for him, dying right after. Anzu does this for Kato as well, also right before she dies. Yeesh, Kato isn't very lucky when it comes to love confessions, is he?
    • Is there anyone in Gantz who does have luck with this sort of thing? Kurono had Sakuraoka die on him, and had to unsuccessfully try to defend against half the Gantz team to save Tae. Even Reika went the Yandere route by cloning him and admitting to some desperate love.
  • In Gravitation, even though Shuichi has already made it very clear that he's madly in love with Yuki, he spectacularly tops his previous assertions by screaming at the top of his lungs, "Yuki is mine!" In the middle of a concert. While surrounded by tons of fans. And with Yuki nearby, but accompanying his fiancee Ayaka. Yuki thinks he's a moron, but can't help but smile.
  • In a climactic episode of Gulliver Boy, once Gulliver is finally clued in regarding Misty's feelings for him after he misses the point of her Love Confession, he calls himself a fool and decides to do this before she has to leave the group. The next time they meet, Gulliver and Misty are in separate airships: he first apologizes to her for being so oblivious, then begs her to stay with him and their friends, and finishes with "I ask that from you... because I love you too, Misty'!" Misty is so touched that she decides to stay — showing it by jumping off the other airship, and straight into Gulliver's embrace.
  • Gunslinger Girl
    • A bit more of a literal example occurs when Petrushka confesses her love to her handler Alessandro, but he dismisses it as a result of her conditioning. To prove it isn't, she slaps and then insults him, both acts which, due to her conditioning, make her physically ill.
    • All the First Generation cyborgs have a Precocious Crush on their handlers, but Triela resists the idea that she's in love with Hilshire because she can't be sure that such feelings are genuine or just a result of her conditioning. After discovering that Hilshire threw away his previous career as a police officer to rescue her from a Snuff Film, and continues to work for the Agency purely to continue protecting her, she realises he's worthy of her affection. After a brief attempt to walk out on Hilshire so he can have a proper life, Triela suddenly rushes back inside the room and kisses him, declaring she's going to say with him until the end.
  • Haou Airen: Kurumi gives one to Hakuron after he points a gun at her head and orders her to swear her love to him.
  • Katou does this several times, in dramatic fashion complete with tears, in the Boys' Love series Haru wo Daiteita.
  • Inverted in Horimiya. When Miyamura confesses having some sort of feelings for Hori, he says it right in the middle of telling her relatively trivial information. This ends up backfiring by making Miyamura feel pathetic and giving Hori a mixed message.
  • Inuyasha:
    • InuYasha and Myouga see what they think are the departing souls of Kagome and Shippo (actually alive and well, just surrounded by protective foxfire), and InuYasha blurts out more than he intended before he realizes that they're alive.
    • Kagome later gets to play it straight and cross it into Shut Up, Hannibal!, as she deals her most direct one to Inyuasha to shake the effects of The Baby's very cruel Breaking Speech off herself.
  • In the movie Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, a powerful moment in the film, Kei grabs onto Fuse crying and utters line from Little Red Riding Hood "Mother, what big claws you have! Mother, what big teeth you have!". All the while, Fuse is screaming in anguish as he finds himself forced to either shoot the woman he loves or turn his back on his fellow Panzer Cops.
  • In the penultimate chapter of Links, Sado finds Nakajo crying in their bed after he had been ruminating about his feelings for him. After a shouting match between the two about the latter kissing Kameda and the former moonlighting as a gigilo, Nakajo blurts out:
Nakajo: How much do I have to pay to make sure you never sleep with anyone but me again?!
Sado: W- Wait a minute. You're acting really weird tonight. You love me that much, huh?
    Nakajo: Yes, duh.
    Sado: Uh?
Nakajo: Ever since the summer of our first year of high school. I've loved you so much it hurts. Ugh. I give up. I admit it. If you leave me, I'll die.
  • The ending of Love Hina Again! The amount of interference (including, but not limited to, rocket-launchers, exploding buildings, Functional Magic, Latex Perfection bodysuits, mecha-turtle invaders, and the immediate threat of losing Keitaro to his adopted sister who'll go to any length, legal or not, to get him) required to make Naru fess up about her true feelings, cannot fail to amaze... Then again, it's the same thing as in that manga arc in Chapter 100-105.
  • This happens in Magic User's Club when Nanaka confesses to Aburatsubo. He rejects her feelings in the kindest, sweetest way ever, doing what he can to not break her heart further. The frame doesn't change from a closeup on Nanaka's face while he gives her his reply; you can watch her emotional state shift from nervousness to surprise to sad realization to resignation.
  • Maison Ikkoku: You can always count on wishy-washy Godai to wait until the last minute to make his feelings known. As with Real Life, unless there's lots of alcohol involved.
  • Mazinger:
    • Mazinger Z: At one of the last episodes Sayaka was holding a wounded Kouji in her arms, and thinking he was dead, she cried out she loved him and wanted to marry him. Then he opened his eyes and showed he was just teasing her. Then she decided to kill him for real.
    • And in the second chapter of Shin Mazinger Zero, she falteringly uttered she loved Kouji shortly before dying.
  • Midori Days: Twice in the same chapter. Ayase, after spending the entire series to lure Seiji into an "appropriate" moment, after nearly a year of perfect chances being missed because of insecurities, she confesses her love (and her attempts) to Seiji. Seiji, however, then tells her that he does have a girlfriend (which is Midori, after spending the series not liking her). Ayase smiles, runs off, and says "It's alright! I confessed! It's alright!" and cries under the street lights.
  • Domon Kasshu of Mobile Fighter G Gundam managed to turn one of these, addressed to his kidnapped and brainwashed love interest, Rain Mikamura into the lead-in to a Finishing Move.
    • The finishing move, as it turns around into a combination attack that defeats the Devil Gundam by putting a great big heart-shaped hole right through it.
    • Allenby herself does this, but only Rain gets to hear it during their Designated Girl Fight. And in a variation, Allenby herself is Brainwashed and Crazy during it, and mostly expressed her love for Domon when Rain mentions him during the fight while trying to calm her down.
  • My-HiME:
    • After spending approximately fifteen episodes following Yuuichi around like a shadow, Shiho finally confesses that she really loves him. He's asleep at the time… and she's still angry at Mai because she thinks he likes her better...
    • Presumably done by Mai to Yuuichi as he lies dying. "Presumably" because at that point he is too far gone to actually hear what she's saying, although we can see her lips move.
    • Shizuru's declaration to Natsuki is accompanied by her going insane, because she believes her love for Natsuki is "wicked", and Natsuki had just overheard a conversation between Shizuru, Haruka, and Yukino where it was revealed that Shizuru had kissed Natsuki in her sleep, and an accusation from Yukino that suggests she may have done more than that.
  • Several examples in Naruto:
    • When Sasuke sets out to betray the village, Sakura confesses her love for him and tells him that she is willing to leave with him and betray the village just so they can stay together. His response is "you're annoying", followed by a "thank you", followed by whacking her on the back of the neck and rendering her unconscious. Even today, years after this happened, people are still not entirely sure what he meant by that; it's an Ironic Echo of a conversation that moments before he denied remembering, and he later carries her to a park bench instead of just leaving her to lie on the ground. This suggests he wasn't being completely cruel to her but was stopping her from taking his dark path. Back then. This initial confession receives a Call-Back when Sakura begs him not to fight Naruto and confesses her love a final time. Sasuke knocks her out with a genjutsu of him impaling her with a Chidori, then sneers to Naruto and Kakashi that she was a deluded fool clinging to a fantasy and that he had no idea why she'd fallen for him in the first place. After Naruto beats some sense into him, Sasuke begins to reciprocate her feelings and they eventually get married.
    • In the series' Darkest Hour, Hinata rushes to protect Naruto from Pain, leaping into a hopeless situation just to buy him time. When he pleads her to run away, she confesses her love for him with this grand speech that starts with "Your smile saved me!" and goes from there. Then Pain stabs her in the back before we can hear his response — which we don't get until The Last: Naruto the Movie two years later. (Or, from the audience's perspective, about six years.)
    • Sai gives one of these to Sakura on Naruto's behalf, except he also points out that Naruto's feelings for both her and Sasuke, and The Promise she made Naruto make to her in Part I (to bring back Sasuke for her), is causing him a lot of emotional pain. Filled with guilt and shame, Sakura then rushes to Naruto to tell him that she loves him now. However, she genuinely doesn't mean it, and she just wants him to stop suffering because of her. This results in Naruto easily seeing right through her, calling her out for lying, and rejecting her outright by telling her that he hates people who lie to themselves. It puts a strain on their friendship for a while.
    • Rin to Kakashi near the end of Kakashi Gaiden. He responds that he doesn't deserve her for abandoning her, but he will protect her as Obito, who secretly loved her, would.
  • A platonic example happens near the end of Negima! Magister Negi Magi. Asuna and Ayaka have been best friends ever since childhood, but it's not until the day before Asuna is set to go to sleep for 100 years that they finally admit how much they mean to each other out loud.
  • In PandoraHearts, there's one declaration where the "love" part is canon and several declarations where the "love" part is only implied. Ada gives the canon love declaration to Vincent, saying that in spite of everything she still wants to stay by his side, as well as that she will forgive him for all his transgressions.
    • Implied love declaration #1 happens when Gilbert exasperatedly asks why Vincent is working with the Baskervilles and constantly putting his life on the line. Vincent answers by saying that everything he has done was for Gilbert and literally states, "Because I love you!" in the beginning. The reason the romantic love is still only considered implied is because Vincent is Gilbert's younger brother. However, he's been known for Big Brother Attraction / Incest Subtext, and Gilbert has a very visibly uncomfortable reaction to his declaration.
  • Plastic Memories has this happening twice.
    • In Episode 8, Tsukasa confesses his feelings to Isla, telling her he wants to be with her until the end no matter how painful it is because he loves her. Unfortunately, this caught Isla off-guard, causing her to freak out and reject him.
    • In Episode 10, Isla changes her mind and wishes to keep making memories with Tsukasa until the end. This leads to her delivering one of these at the end of the episode, which cements the two as the show's Official Couple.
  • In Poor Poor Lips, Nako eventually delivers one to Ren once Ren has decided not to fight her arranged marriage anymore. Luckily for Nako, Ren has been crushing on her for the longest time herself.
  • Sasame from Prétear (anime version) confesses his love for Takako, the Princess of Disaster this way — first indirectly as a "story" about a girl he "once knew", then as an anguished plea to her which ends with him forsaking his role as a Leafe Knight and offering himself up to her side. Her response is to laugh and say "this is my answer!" as she shatters the windows in the area.
    • And later she confesses to his dead body after he makes a Heroic Sacrifice to save her life and asks her "Am I finally your knight? In fact, her original confession to Hayate was pretty anguished, too.
  • Hiroki in Princess Nine openly declared his love for Ryo Hayakawa in the final inning of the Koshien semifinal while at bat against her. He also begs her to love him back by throwing her lightning ball to him, rather than walking him. She obliges, losing the game but winning his heart.
  • Rue/Princess Kraehe confesses her love for Mytho this way in Princess Tutu. As the object of her affection is sending himself to certain doom because she tainted his heart with Raven's blood, the poor girl chases after him screaming and wailing in anguish at the top of her lungs: "I've loved you ever since I was a little girl! And I'll keep on loving you forever!" This sets Mytho's heart free from the Raven's blood, but marks poor Rue as a target to the Raven. Mytho spends most of the rest of the finale trying to save her.
  • Queen's Blade: Hide & Seek: Elina finally confesses her love for her sister, Leina, after their duel in Chapter 24; knowing she may not get another chance to say it, since Leina would be leaving again, soon afterward.
  • Seen in Episode 19 of RahXephon, when Asahina's dying message comes right after Ayato unknowingly killed her.
  • At the end of the Ranma ½ manga, Ranma cries out his love for Akane in desperation because he thinks she has died. Whether it was an internal declaration or a vocal proclamation is up to the reader, but apparently Akane heard it loud and clear.
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena:
Nanami: [to Touga] Because I love you! BECAUSE I LOVE YOU, BIG BROTHER!
  • Saint Seiya: Shaina has two instances of this, as they occur on similar circumstances. Both times involve her jumping in front of Seiya to shield him from an incoming attack, and then she holds onto him and professes her love for him between tears, even knowing he'll never return her feelings the same way.
  • Harima from School Rumble. Too bad he confessed to the wrong girl.
    • Listing all the examples would take someone with way too much time on their hands. Let's just say there's a fair number of them. Hilarity Ensues when Harima accidentally confesses to their male teacher, who is completely nonplussed. Then, in the next episode, he does it AGAIN.
  • A Silent Voice. The heroine, Shouko Nishimiya, gets jealous that her crush's Unlucky Childhood Friend is back in the picture, so she changes her hairstyle and goes to confess to him. The problem is that she's deaf — thinking he would reject her due to her disability, she decides to say it instead of signing it. However, she has a very strong Speech Impediment due to her deafness, and he mistakes it for a comment about how the moon looks nice that night.
  • Sing "Yesterday" for Me: In the last episode of the anime, Rikuo becomes increasingly agitated over his romantic turmoil in a long monologue as he hurriedly journeys to confess his love to Haru. Once he finds her, he emotionally declares his love for her and demands they start dating.
  • In Sonic X:
    • After about a season of building up a relationship with her, Tails finally admits in the series finale he loves Cosmo just before he is forced to kill her. Only in the Japanese version though, sadly not in the 4Kids Entertainment dub.
    • A variation occurs with Sonic and Amy. Though Sonic is well aware of her feelings, the anguished declaration comes when Amy tearfully admits that she'd spend the rest of her life waiting for him, before falling to her knees and pleading for him to say that he loves her.
  • Ths second season of Sound! Euphonium's anime adaptation ends with Kumiko doing this towards her graduating upperclassman Asuka. It's most likely intended to be platonic in this case.
  • In Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Misa finds out that Minmei was with Hikaru in his apartment after hearing her talking to him. Suspecting that she lost to her, and also learning that she was to captain the SDF-2 and leaving Earth for a while, she gives one of these to him before leaving, since she wanted to let him know her true feelings for him. He actually ends up declaring his love for her instead.
  • Happens frequently in Hinako Takanaga's Yaoi Genre manga:
    • In one chapter of The Tyrant Falls in Love, Morinaga and Souichi get into an argument on whether Morinaga should continue staying at Souichi's place to keep a lookout for the stalker or move to another place for his safety. In exasperation, Souichi yells that he'd rather be hurt than have things precious to him be hurt. His declaration isn't explicit enough to completely resolve the "does he like him back or not" issue, but judging from Morinaga's stunned face and Souichi's "My God, what did I just blurt out?" expression, it's a tad more revealing than he intended.
    • In Little Butterfly, outcast Nakahara is surprised when cheerful classmate Kojima is friendly to him but agrees to become friends. When his feelings of friendship deepen into love, he makes an angsty declaration to Kojima, fearing rejection and saying that they probably shouldn't see each other anymore. Kojima does accept his feelings, saying he thinks he might love him back, and says they can still be friends… but only on the grounds that Nakahara doesn't do anything "weird" until he's sure he loves him.
    • In Awkward Silence baseball ace Tamiya asks out the shy artist Toono but becomes more and more distressed as he takes Toono's natural emotionless appearance as a sign his feelings are unrequited. This leads to Toono having to declare his love in turn to convince Tamiya that the relationship is truly wanted.
  • The finale of Tokyo Ghoul includes a few of these.
    • In the final chapter, Akira breaks down in grief while stating that she loved Amon and Takizawa, both of which were reported dead.
    • Tsukiyama's breakdown on the rooftop may be one as well, even if he doesn't realize it.
Tsukiyama: ... if something were to happen to you, Kaneki, what would I do...?
  • In a late episode of Tokyo Mew Mew, Zakuro appears to be leaving the other Mews. Minto takes this badly and actually ends up outright fighting her, growing increasingly impassioned and upset until she screams "I loved you! I loved you!" It's never confirmed what kind of love she was talking about, and the whole thing is never mentioned again.
  • Happens in Vandread when a Not What It Looks Like moment between Hibiki and Misty causes Dita to get supremely depressed. The crew decides to resolve the issue by locking Hibiki and Dita together until they make up. Hibiki eventually starts one of these but gets interrupted by the scramble alarm. Dita returns the favor in the final battle when Hibiki attempts a Heroic Sacrifice.
Dita: I won't let that happen! (charges into the fray)
    Hibiki: Idiot, don't come!
Dita: I finally understand… Dita's stupid so I can't understand the world… but I understand Mr. Alien very well! Right now Mr. Alien is trying to protect the lives of everyone so Dita will protect Mr. Alien instead! Because Dita loves Mr. Alien! That's why… that's why Dita's going to protect Hibiki!
  • Wandering Son:
    • Nitori tells Takatsuki that she is in love with him in elementary after having some awkwardly romantic dreams and having others imply they should be a couple. Takatsuki declines. It creates a rift in their friendship that takes a while to repair.
    • Not too long afterwards Saori delivers one of these to Nitori. It's incredibly awkward and Nitori confesses that she confessed to Takatsuki. Saori starts crying at the revelation it was Nitori that confessed, not the other way around. This situation only makes Saori even more jealous of Takatsuki and cements them as enemies, when before they and Nitori were all best friends. It isn't until well into middle school that they make up.
    • Fumiya had been chasing Saori for a few years before he formally confessed and asked her to date him while crying no less. She accepts.
    • The final chapter has Takatsuki confessing to Nitori. It's unrequited and they both recognize this. The last shot of Takatsuki has them holding hands with Nitori.
  • Welcome Back, Alice: Yo makes one to Mitani after having a crush on her for years. She accepts, although he ends up regretting the whole thing later on.
  • In When Marnie Was There, Marnie begs Anna to forgive her for leaving her from a balcony as a Dramatic Wind whips around them and Anna shouts back with tears running down her cheeks, "I love you! I'll never forget you until the day I die!" Despite it sounding like a romantic confession out of context, though, it's really a platonic declaration of love from Anna towards Marnie who's really the ghost of Anna's grandmother who wanted to bond with her in a way she couldn't in life due to dying when Anna was still very young.
  • We finally, finally get one from Sumisa in Chapter 42 of Whispered Words. Her best friend and long-time crush Ushio tells her that she must move away to take care of her grandmother. Sumisa breaks down in tears and lets out all of the feelings she's kept hidden, as she clutches Ushio against her and begs her not to go. Ushio reciprocates... but apologizes, and says that she must.
  • All of Wolf Guy - Wolfen Crest's Chapter 97 is Inugami (of all people)'s giving one towards Aoshika-sensei, which kicks off the biggest Roaring Rampage of Rescue in the entire series since Aoshika is currently in the middle of being put through utter hell at the hands of Haguro and his men.
  • World's End Harem, practically the first scene with resident protagonist Reito only gathering the courage to confess his love for Erisa when he thought he had only some time left among the living, for he contracted multiple sclerosis; Reito has loved Erisa since they were elementary school kids, now they are college students.
  • A more ambiguous case crops up in ×××HOLiC given that their relationship isn't necessarily interpreted as romantic, but it has to mean something that while Yuuko's dying, Watanuki proclaims that only universe he cares about and wants to believe in is the one where she's there.
  • In Yaiba, Yaiba says an "I Like You, seriously." to an aged Sayaka before confronting Kaguya. After the battle however he jokes about it, so we don't know if it was serious or not.
  • Your Lie in April: Kaori makes her emotional confession to Kousei in the letter he receives after her passing.
  • Your Name: When Taki and Mitsuha briefly meet at the cliff overlooking Itomori, they write words on each other's hands so they won't forget each other. While Mitsuha unsuccessfully writes her name on Taki's hand, Taki successfully writes "I love you" on her hand. It's a symbolism of the film's Central Theme; memories can fade away, but feelings will linger.
  • Yuki Yuna is a Hero: The Secretly Dying Yuna writes an anguished Platonic Declaration of Love towards her friend Karin in her Secret Diary after the two get into a fight.
