WesternAnimation This mess is much worse than having to eat a human face from a can
After years of delays following the Kickstarter fiasco, we finally see the release of John Kricfalusi's Cans Without Labels. Putting aside the fact that the creator had already faced accusations of being a pedophile and a rapist (and responded to the allegations in rather questionable ways) prior to the cartoon's release, there's simply nothing good about this short.
There's not a lot this piece of crap provides in the terms of humor, just thinking that funny faces alone will make the cartoon funny, which is a way of thinking akin to believing that condiments are all you need to make good food. The pacing is awful, the CGI backgrounds do not mesh well with the 2-D animation, and Donald Bastard serves little purpose other than giving Slab and Ernie a convenient way to get rid of the face their Uncle George is forcing them to eat in addition to being a rather unfunny Take That! towards Disney.
John K simply has no future in animation. He's already been blacklisted from the animation industry because of his reputation of being an abusive boss with ridiculously perfectionist standards as well as the news of what he did to poor Robyn Bird and Katie Rice, and no sane person is willing to defend him anymore. At this point, the best thing John can do is retire from animation for good.
WesternAnimation An emetic embarrassment that deserves nothing but contempt
In 2012, John Kricfalusi, also known as John K., the creator of The Ren & Stimpy Show, started a Kickstarter page for a cartoon starring George Liquor he wanted to make called Cans Without Labels. A simple story about what his dad used to do as a kid, the short didn't come out until 2019, after John K.'s history of child grooming came to light.
Personally, I didn't like this short for a lot of reasons. One, the animation. It's really bad. There are noticeable animation errors (one example being how George's nose gets smaller in the opening zoom out), and some of the faces, while fun to laugh at, are cringe-worthy and repulsive. I get that it's John K., but Ren and Stimpy had other jokes than just weird as Hell faces.
As for the jokes themselves? They're not good. It's either just yelling, swearing, ugly faces as I mentioned before, gross out, etc. For example, we get a whole shot of a cat's buttocks moving around and there's a whole character called Donald Bastard and the only actual joke with him is how he's a parody of Donald Duck.
Speaking of having a whole shot of a cat's buttcheeks moving around, that's another issue with this short. The pacing. Some scenes go on for WAAAAAY too long, like George threatening Slab and Ernie if they didn't eat the face, George going to the bathroom (and you can hear him take a shit no less), and George coming back into the kitchen with the belt. It's miserably unfunny and embarrassing
And here's the biggest problem with the short - how a fundamentally broken cartoon is not going to distract from your life of child molesting and grooming. John K. asked for MONEY to make this, and he responded by releasing this YEARS LATER after he was exposed as a creep.
In the end, Cans Without Labels is atrocious. The pacing and content issues of Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon" have returned, and the fact that this was released after John K. was exposed is baffling. In the end, go watch the original Ren and Stimpy Show. It hasn't aged completely well, but it still manages to make me laugh, unlike this shit. I'm actually planning to make my own cartoon short, and even though I'm sure it's gonna take a long time, I just hope it turns out better than this. I want to be proven right.
