Jay Exci offers a lot of legitimate criticism of CinemaSins and similar websites. His best probably being “this movie, that movie” for when a movie with only slight similarities to another film is treated as if it were the same one. And even the illegitimate criticisms can often be justified by the RuleofFunny. I also like his FriendlyRivalry with Th3Birdman. I do think that there are occasions where he misses the mark. Namely, he is often extremely reluctant to acknowledge the existence of flaws in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the point where it can sometimes weaken the quality of his video. For instance, in Everything Wrong With Everything Wrong WithSpiderManHomecomingCinemaSins responds to Iron Man telling Spider-Man that the reason he was willing to let him fight Captain America but won’t let him fight the Vulture is because he knew Cap wouldn’t kill him. CinemaSins comments that that was the fundamental problem with CaptainAmericaCivilWar and Exci sins CinemaSins for wanting Cap to be willing to kill a teenager. Only that misses the point as it was clearly arguing that Cap would be ThouShaltNotKill and as result the stakes were extremely low. Also Jay Exci spends the entire video complaining about CinemaSins disliking the fact that this Spider-Man is extremely reliant upon Iron Man. Exci insists that CinemaSins equates it being different with it being bad. Even though the actual complaint is really that the SpiderMan mythos has always been defined by how Peter Parker has no one to catch him when he falls and must figure things out for himself. Him becoming Iron Man Junior takes that away. Yet Exci never addresses the actual critique which is obviously the one being offered. He also makes mistakes about character motivation in his video responding to CinemaSins video about Megamind. Still all in all, it’s a pretty good video series. And his CinemaSins parody video is hilarious.
