A Trainwreck...but aren't those fun to watch?

I began to watch the dub of Code Geass thanks to its presence here on TV Tropes. I quickly got caught up in it, eventually skipping to fansubs because I wanted to see what happens next. And there's the rub.

Code Geass is a series that thrives on plot twists and unexpected reveals. The first season begins slowly, as Lelouch bounces from one victory to another, but begins to throw more and more plot twists in as the show grows. Many episodes are left on giant cliffhangers, none more so than the first season finale. Because you want to know what happens, you keep tuning in excitedly. This worked fine in the first season, but completely destroyed the show in the second, giving rise to the nickname of "Code Trainwreck". Creating one plot twist after another for the sake of creating more tension and conflict results in a plot that is incoherent and nonsensical, with character motivations, loyalties, and actions making no discernable sense. But I know I kept watching because I wanted to see what kind of shit they'd pull next, and I expect a lot of folk did as well. The series has other positive points, but the plot craziness in season 2 kills much of it. Worth watching, but don't go in with high expectations.

What I liked:

  • Kallen Kozuki. The only character I unashamedly rooted for throughout the entire series, this girl is heroic, determined, caring, and one of the few characters to be completely straightforward throughout the entire show. She's the hero, plain and simple.
  • Season 1 Robot fighting-before everyone started flying, the combat was interesting, gritty, and suspenseful. Not on the level of the combat in Full Metal Panic, but good.
  • Lelouch's masterful tactical planning and general hamminess. While his grand plans suffered from a large case of Fridge Logic, his mapping out of enemy tactics and strategies, and the over the top way he carries his plans out are ridiculously fun.

What I disliked:

  • Stupid plans. All of the final plans for peace on earth are all terrible and fail, especially if you have any knowledge of International Relations.
  • Overpowered Robots- beamspamming flying robots that kill everything are boring.
  • Plot trainwreck, as I said before.

And since I've got a few words left: This is awesome.

Nice feature, those "what I liked, what I didn't" bullets.

Got the idea from Shockz's Mahou Sensei Negima review, actually.

Woops. Still, way to keep it rolling.

On plot twists: when I watched episode 22, I thought, "So that's what Diabolus Ex Machina means."

I'd say the plot is more inconsistent and poorly paced than nonsensical or incoherent, but what do I know? If people say one thing enough times on the Internet, it must be true! I mean, there's no denying there's some stupid stuff involved, but you can actually explain a fair amount of the "whys" as opposed to the "hows" with some suspension of disbelief. 'course, expecting that from the average viewer is probably too much, but it can be done. Not a great show, just one that's insanely bashed (and overrated too, but that's not the case here).

I felt that the number of plot twists thrown in were ridiculous to the extreme. With everything about Emperor Charles in particular, you also have the Damoclese, Lelouch being betrayed by the Black Knights, whatever Suzaku was up to, etc. Point is, they packed approximately 3 season's worth of surprises, changes, and plot twists into half a season, which meant that stuff happened so fast and so randomly that it dissolved into incoherence. But that's my perspective.

I'd have to be blind to say that there weren't too many plot twists, so no argument there.

But I do think the same twists, give or take a couple, would have been easier to digest (and for the show itself to handle) with, say, six or seven extra episodes, which was pretty much what was already spent on recycled material during the first part of the show (due to the change of plans and so on).

I don't think they needed to split up R2 into three seasons, only a more efficient use of time and better planning, both of which go hand in hand, or even just less ambition.

Perhaps I was exaggerating on "three seasons" but if more time was devoted to the consequences of some of what happened instead of just pushing them to the side to make way for the next big plot twist, the series would have been far better. So I think we're basically saying the same thing- too much plot packed into too little time. The only thing we really disagree on is the scale.
