Bethesda's Best Fallout Title Yet

The Small Reference Pool is intentional; while it still doens't hold a candle in terms of story to New Vegas or the original games, it's a significant improvement over Fallout 3, and Skyrim, even if that isn't apparent for the first few hours of the main quest, which ranges from mediocre to cringeworthy. Things pick up when the major factions come into play. If there's one thing Bethesda learned from New Vegas, it's how to do effective Grey and Gray Morality; all of the factions have reasonable arguments and clear flaws in their ideology and methods, with the arguable exception of the Minutemen, who, as a faction are built largely through the player's actions.

The companion characters have much more personality than in Fallout 3, though there's pretty much nothing to talk with them about after completing their personal quests. Most of them have at least some Character Development, and several of them can and will turn on or abandon the player under certain circumstances.

As with Fallout 3, sandbox gameplay is where Fallout 4 shines. Exploration feels and works a lot like it did in Fallout 3, and the map is about the same size. Virtually every weapon can be customized, though this customization is fairly linear for most of the weapons. Even when sidegrades are present, there's almost always a clear winner among them, though there are some exceptions. Armor has fairly limited customization, limited to one bonus and a paint coat in most cases, though there's more genuine sidegrades to be found. Taking a page of Gearbox's book, there are now elite "Legendary" enemies who will drop weapons with unique, randomized properties, which can range from useless to impractical to hideously overpowered.

The shooter gameplay is a major improvement over previous 3d Fallout titles, though as of now, minor changes to the .ini files are necessary to get the controls to behave like a proper PC shooter. As in New Vegas, iron sights have been added, along with an action point based sprint meter and a dedicated melee/grenade key.

Ultimately, Fallout 4 is a game that fans of Fallout 3 will love, and Fallout: New Vegas fans like myself can at least tolerate.

Why does everyone talk about New Vegas's story like it was so good? Caesar's Legion was a terrible enemy, you were railroaded into the main quest, and none of the important characters were very complex. The companions were good, but that's it. The main questline was just awful.

I'm glad to see someone (besides myself) who's so positive about Fallout 4!

@Doctor Detective How did the main quest railroad you? You were given plenty of ways to approach each situation you encountered on the way to New Vegas, and there are several ways to handle (or fail to handle) Benny when you finally confront him.

If you're talking about railroading in a strictly geographical sense, anyone who's played through the first act once can get to Outer Vegas by taking the backroads, I-15, or the various passes in the south. The game gives you everything you need to accomplish that (dynamite and stealth boys) in the first town, no less. Outer Vegas is filled with low-level content as a result, with a literal grinding arena.

Are you really telling me House and Caesar aren't complex? Or Benny and Hanlon, for that matter? The main quest was excellent, if just for Ring-a-ding-ding and Arizona Killer alone.

I have one major complaint with New Vegas, and it's my own fault:

The quest names. My encyclopedic knowledge of 1950s pop hits ensured that I got literally all of the references, and by the end I was wishing for a little more mix-up.

Idisagree. I am a fan of fallout 3 (it being my first fallout game) and i strongly dislike (hate is a bit too strong of a word) fallout 4. Not as much for the gameplay (although i dislikes the removal of item degradation, SVAV being a Bullet Time,...) but for making all your efforts in fallout 3 pointless and making all the game a Shaggy Dog Story.

@cricri3007: Well, for fans of the first two games, Fallout 3 was a major case of Character Derailment for the Brotherhood of Steel, I'm sure you know that. Bethesda has simply given them the morally ambiguous characterization they had in every other game in the series.

@Captain Capsase I know that. They probably could, should have doen it better than by makign all your efforts in the third game completly pointless. And i liked the Defector from Decadence 's Brotherhood better.

@cricri I liked them, too, but it the Black and White Morality just didn't feel like Fallout to me.

@Doctor Detective I have to be honest with you, Fallout: New Vegas still has the best story of any game in the series up to this point. The characters were well written, I understood their motivations and why many acted the way they did, and I feel like I stepped into the role of my character very easily and never seemed to be going against the characterization I was making for my Courier, no matter who I sided with.

The latter part seems to be Fallout 4's biggest problem- no matter who the player is, the PC is always a Husband/Wife who's looking for their child and gets embroiled in a conflict between 4 factions for no better reason than "because then we'd have a really short game otherwise".

@astrokitty That's ironic, considering the Karma system is VERY black and white.

Fallout 3's Brotherhood of Steel is the only chapter worth a damn in my opinion. Before and after, they were a pack of xenophobic assholes that I never felt bad putting down.
