Death Battle: Love It or Hate It, You Can't Deny the Effort

Let's be utterly frank here: Death Battle is a controversial show, even on this very wiki. Of course, this is to be expected when a show involves taking two characters from popular series and putting them into a battle to the death: Someone is going to get pissed when their favorite character loses, be it just because their favorite character lost or because something seemingly erred in the research that directly affected the results.

Despite this, I feel that some people just take this show too seriously. So what if your favorite character died? You're entitled to your opinion. So what if research erred? The fact they actually made the effort to research in the first place makes it better than battles that just rely on viewer opinion to win.

Even then, ScrewAttack has never attempted to claim their results are the end-all, be-all decision. These people go out their way to research, animate, and voice-over a series dedicated to answering the fanboy question of "Who would win in a fight to the death?" And they look damn good while doing it.

Sometimes, I feel we just get to caught up with "But Goku can do X", "Toph shouldn't have been able to bend Gaara's X", "Tifa should be able to stomp Yang with X tons of force" to really appreciate the effort the folks at ScrewAttack put into their work, even if it could be wrong. And no, just because my preferred character won each of these fights does not change my opinion.

(And anyone who still believes Yang won her fight because ScrewAttack and Rooster Teeth partnered up, despite Word of God outright stating this was never the case, you're lying to yourselves).

Me, I just love the entire series, regardless if I believe "Character X should have beaten Character Y", because you know what? I've yet to come across a group willing to put so much time and effort into creating such beautiful fights as them, and that's something to be admired whether you agreed with the results or not.

That's why even as I write this, I'm eagerly awaiting to see how Death Battle dazzles me with the next fight. Because I came for entertainment, and they always deliver.

I generally agree, but I also thing that

a) one bad episode does not a bad show make

and

b) no one would complain about it if they honestly weren't fans, because then they wouldn't care.

"So what if research erred?" "Even then, ScrewAttack has never attempted to claim their results are the end-all, be-all decision."

They... kind of do. And by 'kind of', I mean, 'They totally do. 100%. They completely absolutely do. You could not be more wrong.' In a show where it's their job to find out who would win, if they don't do the research, that's a bad show. But it's not a bad show because I only dislike maybe 2 episodes tops, but still.

"(And anyone who still believes Yang won her fight because ScrewAttack and Rooster Teeth partnered up, despite Word of God outright stating this was never the case, you're lying to yourselves)."

Kind of hard not to take that one personally. Seems very over-defensive of you that I said 'I think they might've been biased here' and your response is 'Well they said they weren't so stop lying to yourself.' A compelling argument to be sure.

Overall I like Death Battle too so I can't say this review is bad. But it just seems kind of rude that 90% of the Death Battle fandom are people who actually care about the results, and you're saying that they're all wrong, everyone should only care about the entertainment factor.

So Death Battle gets to gain an incredible amount popularity because it asserts itself as a credible source of settling 'Who would win?' debates, but anyone who looks to them to find out who would actually win is doing it wrong. The whole point of the show is to find out who would win in a fight and you think anyone who actually cares who ends up winning the fight isn't watching the show right.

Rood.

@Elmo3000 I never said people should only care about the entertainment factor. Heck, if people want to watch it to find out who would win, well all the power to them. I'd be lying if I said I never watched it in the hopes of having my favorite character win.

I'm just saying that people occasionally take it WAY too seriously if a character loses, especially when you remember that at the end of the day this series is all about fictional characters fighting to the death and really doesn't matter in the long run.

It's all just entertainment in the end, and I just feel that sometimes we just don't give the crew enough credit for their work under all the fanboying.

You can't have enjoyment without that feeling, Prometheus. It is a natural byproduct of being emotionally invested in a thing in the first place.

And, honestly, for every "betrayed fanboy" who complains because their favorite character lost, I've run into people who dispute the results on much-more honest grounds. (The "Wolverine's skeleton is a different kind of adamantium that can't be cut with vibro-weapons" thing, for one, convinced me from the perspective of a Raiden fan who still thinks that he deserved the win that the finale should have been better-handled.)

They're all dead meat when Mr. Rogers awakens from his thousand-year sleep anyway.

Oh, come on! You can't put Mister Rogers into Death Battle! That'd be unfair! It'd be like having a fight with Squirrel Girl! Or Onepunch Man! Or...

...Actually, that'd be pretty sweet.

Petition to have Squirrel Girl fight One Punch Man in a Death Battle!

The potential salt could season my food for a decade.

I'd just like to say that I loved your review. Though I am still a little hurt about the Goku and Superman battle, I've come to accept their judment and enjoy how much they put into each battle. Thanks for saying that.

I'm thankful for you calling out the angry fans who are still screaming bias. Hell, I have an entire blog post on my screwattack blog ready to be posted that calls out the angry fans. It mentions specific people, which is why I haven't posted it, but it's ready for when some asshat says something that irks me.

I've gotten over other fights like Cap vs Bats, Luigi vs Tails, and Beast vs Goliath (All of which have my favorite characters losing). I can't wrap my mind around why other people can't get over Yang vs Tifa. Maybe it's because they feel that they ruled the limit break multipliers as only a mechanic or something, but getting mad isn't going to help anything. I just can't figure out why that result gets so much unnecessary hate. Use the multipliers = Tifa stomps; Don't use them = Hard fought battle, but Yang ultimately comes out on top. It helps that I still call total bullshit on the bias accusations.

The multipliers on the weapons, are legit however. But the multipliers on the limit breaks... Not so legit. But, I'd like to point out that Yang SHRUGGED OFF the pillar smash. Meaning that 1,400 tons is likely nowhere NEAR her damage cap.

So you can\'t wrap your mind around people having different opinions than you on...a shows opinion? Cute, very classy.

\"I just can\'t figure out why that result gets so much unnecessary hate. Use the multipliers = Tifa stomps; Don\'t use them = Hard fought battle, but Yang ultimately comes out on top.\"

So, um... forgive me if I\'m misinterpretting this, but you\'re saying that they didn\'t use the damage multipliers (despite bringing them up multiple times and making sure that we all knew that they knew about them) because... it would have resulted in Tifa winning? Okay, so Tifa wins. What\'s the problem?

That\'s kind of like, \"Hey, I couldn\'t help but notice that Superman lost to a Magikarp. Doesn\'t Superman have super strength and speed and heat vision and ice breath and all that kazzazz?\" \"Yes, but if he had used those powers, he would have won, so we didn\'t count those.\"

I honestly love Death Battle, but even the people I see defending Yang VS Tifa seem to be acknowledging that the result was completely wrong. And getting a completely wrong result by accident is one thing, but getting a completely wrong result on purpose - especially if the only reasonable explanation is that they were ordered to do so by their new bosses - is a pretty terrible thing for a show like Death Battle to do. Or a terrible thing to be forced to do.
