Disney, you can do better [but it's still not that bad]

It seems that Disney is slipping back down from the very high point that The Princess and the Frog had reached. Tangled was nowhere as good as "Princess and the Frog", for the very simple reason that it was CGI. Good CGI, I'll admit, but I'd trade even good CGI for any traditional animation, anytime. It's simply not as charming and simply good-looking; characters either look like they're made of plastic, which is disagreeable, or if the animators put lots of details, they look like they were real (which is bad too, because I don't watch a cartoon to see real people; if I want to see real peoples I'll simply watch live-action, for goodness sake ! stop trying to get "realistic" !). However, Tangled still had rather good songs, a very good plot, and a lot of funny moments (though there are a few gags with Flynn that I didn't like).

Now comes Frozen. The CGI children look worse than they ever did, but at least, I'll admit, they did a fantastic job on the ice palace and on the storm in the iced fjord. In fact, the sceneries seem to be the only thing CGI can be really convincing at. Then there is the story, which is pretty good too, though there are also a few gags I didn't like (mainly with the trolls). But then, oh boy… the music is just awful. Now alright, it's a matter of taste, but the music I like to hear in Disney movies is of the "classical/jazz/fifties Broadway" style. The one you hear in most of their classical movies up to "The Great mouse detective"). NOT pop music like this awful "Let it go" ! Shew ! And in the end what grieves me with Frozen (hence the title) is that Disney could definitely have improved the thing in a few simple steps. 1° Cut those songs and hire Alan Menken instead. 2° Make it traditionally animated, though perhaps with the ice castle in CGI, like what they did on "Treasure Planet" and "Tarzan". 3° Undelete some of the funny deleted scenes they cut for no reasons, like the "pie, pig, pole" scene with Anna. Was it that hard ? With that in mind it could have made a very good and respectful Disney classic.

PS: Apparently, they keep slipping down. Video games ? Aaah. SUPERHEROES ? PLEASE MY GOD TELL ME IT'S NOT TRUE !

I admit that I loved Wreck-It Ralph, and I'm excited for Zootopia, but otherwise, I agree: Disney, stop trying to be Pixar and Dreamworks! Your traditional animation was what made you unique!

I agree even more strongly with what you said about the music.

I haven't played the particular game that Tango is from, but still... robo kitty. :D

I dunno, I'd rather have good CGI than watch something by Dingo pictures. A medium isn't Bad by default, it's what people do with it.

You cannot judge a movie on its animation medium.

...I don't get what's wrong with CGI?

How is traditional (looking) animation inherently better? I mean with Frozen i actually feel like it would really work with traditional animation nearly as well, the focus on ice and snow and reflective stuff suits it well

Eh, I can totally understand your misgivings about 3D animation, but your specific criticisms seem all too superficial and subjective. what's even the point of watching if all you're going to think about is "Damn, I wish this were traditionally animated." The times, they are a-changing and all that shit. I wouldn't trade one great Pixar movie for every single one of the direct-to-video quality Disney canon output of 1998-2010 (even the frog one).

Computers can never replace the magic wrought by human hands, but saying you'd trade this for any traditionally animated film out there is some hopelessly nostalgia-tinged hyperbole even I wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

No offense, but I feel like your nostalgia goggles are a little too thick.

You would really rather watch bad hand drawn animation than good CGI? Any hand drawn animation? Even stuff like the scenes from the Zelda CD-i games?

I don't really see how the music is pop (except maybe Love Is An Open Door). Most of these songs could easily fit in a Broadway musical.

I think CGI is just as legitimate as any animation. Maybe it will fade at some point. Maybe 2D films will eventually make a comeback. Who knows? But CGI will never go away completely. And it shouldn't.

I agree with Patworx. I actually think Princess and the Frog was the worst of those movies (haven't seen Big Hero 6 though). And Frozen initially WAS traditionally animated, and Alan Menken initially was doing the music (one song from the old plot, "Love Can't Be Denied", was released), but he left the project, the plot change, and we went from The Snow Queen to the Frozen movie we got.
