Go watch this. Please.

I see absolutely no reason why anyone should skip on watching this. After the lackluster(if not bad) films such as Brave and Cars 2(exception to the former), this shows that Pixar still has that creative talent that makes their masterpieces, well, masterpieces. This is a film that deserves to sit alongside Toy Story as one of Pixar's best, because there's just so much effort put into it. My high expectations were undoubtedly met.

That and the film hits a lot of right marks if you're a fan of psychology. Anyone majoring in the field should definitely check this out.

"after the lackluster (if not bad) films such as Brave and Cars 2 (exception to the former)"

Brave is worse than Cars 2?

I don't disagree, but I feel you out to go into more detail about what makes it a good film. Avoidance of low-brow humor? Character dynamics?

I see one reason but I doubt it enters in line here.

@ Electric Nova

When he says the former is the exception he's, referring to the one that precedes the latter or the last one (Basically it's the other way around).

Cars 2 really isn't that bad.

I would probably agree that the psychological aspects of the movie are interesting, if it gave us more than five or six emotions. Where's sympathy? Envy? The neutral mood of no special mood being 'too high'? Conflicted? Swooning? Love? And all the other, smaller emotions, like frustration instead of simply all-out anger. Or having a low mood, instead of being just plain sad.

^For one, the creators thought of including more emotions, and there's concept art of them, such as Greed, Gloom, Schadenfreude, etc, but ultimately felt that having too many characters cluttered the story.

Additionally, the movie uses the Discrete Emotions theory, which claims that there's a small amount of core emotions that are mixed or raised high or low to form all the other ones. So all the missing emotions are covered by overlap. Sympathy we see is covered by Sadness when she's kind to Bing-Bong, envy by Anger at not being treated fairly, and so on.

Lastly, it makes sense that Riley have only a few emotions, as she's a child and the entire movie is about her overcoming mental simplicity and discovering the depths of her emotional range. Recall its reveal of memories with emotional blends.
