Why does TV tropes hate him so much

Okay look, I get that Nostalgia critic's videos aren't as funny as they used to be and he can get incredibly preachy at times but despite that, his recent work is still solid. For every joke that misses the mark there is always one or more that hit the mark. As for his aesops, yeah a lot of them are corny but there are still ones that are well thought out such as his videos on hype and originality. People complain about the skits, He doesn't usually use them excessively and the majority of them are the right length. I also like his partners as they add an interesting dynamic to the show. In conclusion, even though he doesn't hit the same high notes as frequently as before, the series is still far from bad.

PS: If this review sounds disjointed then that is because I am better at writing things over a long term than a short one.

I think it's not so much that Tvtropes hate him as much as people only seem to write when he does something "wrong". Personally, I find his reviews more miss than hit and the skits a bit unbearable. He's good, but not great so there's not that much to write about. The revamp is also noticeably different from the old version. There is a greater emphasis on presenting a moral about films and their creation. Not to say that these morals were never present in his older stuff, but they were less prominent. Sometimes that doesn't jive well with people. PS: Sorry i this also sounds a bit disjointed/rambling. This comment was rather spur-of-the-moment. PS: I also like Malcolm, Rachel, and Tamara. I wish they had roles other than impressions of characters.

I just find him and his character tired. He no longer does what he used to do well - act like a cynical, self-deprecating manchild. That was what was funny to me. His character originally mocked both bad movies and the overgrown nerds who throw a tantrum when a movie doesn't meet their standards. Now, he's thrown that out of the window and actually tries to be serious in his videos (especially his "know it all" editorials). Like you mentioned, he's too preachy now. I know this example is overused, but it's the best one - his review for the film "Cat In The Hat". A film which is a blatant so-bad-its-good spoof that he took way too seriously and had to make some lecture about how its existence is offensive to people's perfect little childhoods, even though the film was long forgotten before he resurrected it from the crappy movie grave where it belonged. It's just one bad movie, and at the of the day, a bunch of bad movies cannot harm anyone, but the new NC doesn't seem to be aware of that.

By taking what he does too seriously, adding in those pointless skits, acting like some kind of God of movies who knows all and cannot be wrong, and failing to keep his character consistent, NC no longer has the appeal he used to have. Sooooorrrrry.

Honestly, I really like him tearing The Cat in the Hat a new asshole. It was a lot of fun to see him point out how awful it was.

I'm up for joining Discord servers! PM me if you know any good ones!

I don't really think there's anything wrong with his new reviews. In some ways, they're even better than his old ones.

Only bothering to comment when someone does something wrong, isn't that like the third rule of the internet or something? That being said, you shouldn't be disheartened by the vocal minority... even if we're right and bothering to even take that discussion is liable to result in you becoming a gibbering wreck.

It's kind of odd that you assume many people "hate" the Nostalgia Critic. Here on TV Tropes many tropers still remove any slightly critical comment about Doug at first sight.

That said, Doug's decline in quality has many different reasons, but the most important ones are these three:

1) The length of his episodes has gotten far too long (45 minutes) to remain entertaining all the way through. Especially since too much of it is just filler distracting from the review itself. Many episodes would benefit from being trimmed.

2) Doug relies way too much on parodying and referencing other media for his review. He used to do this in the past too, but it has gotten increasingly excessive the past years. Most of the time you're just watching a bunch of amateurs dressed up as movie characters imitating scenes that are only slightly amusing if you are familiar with what they are spoofing. It also hides the fact that he can't think up stuff that is funny in itself anymore.

3) Doug realizes he has gained a huge crowd over the years, so he actually tries to put more deep morals, analysis and life lessons in his reviews and editorials. Unfortunately he never does any proper background research about the topics he discusses. As a result he makes countless ignorant mistakes, misconceptions or just plain naïve interpretations about the world around him. Most of the time Doug just clicks a camera on, starts jabbering some random incoherent thoughts and edits some film, TV and Internet images between them to give his audience a feeling of "oh, I recognize this imagery". The worst part is that his analysis never provide you with any proper useful insight that you couldn't come up with yourself. Check out his video "Why is nothing original anymore?", for instance.

Doug, you're a decent comedian, but in the field of analysis Renegade Cut, Brows Held High, The Nostalgia Chick and Half in the Bag leave you miles behind. Mostly because they actually put effort in it and look things up before making statements.

Go back to making comedy video of shorter and more modest lengths, leave out 3/4th of the unneccesary spoof material, give your extra's more input in the scripts than merely reciting lines you've written and just quit doing editorials altogether. You don't always need to reference other stuff in order to be funny. And while your videos have more show and spectacle in them than in the past it still can't hide that your shows has gotten extremely tired over the years.

Maybe because unlike a fine wine he hasn't gotten better with age?
