Good Fun

I haven't yet watched Season 2, but I've watched Season 1 and I've enjoyed it a lot! It's not gritty or dark or serious (for the most part) and that's what I love about it - sometimes all that realism can get you down, and a show like this is the perfect break from it all. The animation style is nothing special but the city landscapes are FANTASTIC, the fourth-wall breaking steadily gets more and more hilarious (I admit, I didn't like it at all when I first started watching) and overall the show is twice as good at female representation as its more serious counterpart Avengers Assemble, and four times as good at representation of POC. So long as you don't go into it expecting a serious drama filled with tragedy and angst then you'll like it - just give it a try!

... We probably didn't watch the same show.

More seriously I agree being all dark and gritty can be depressing, but there is such thing as the middle ground. This show is waaaaaaaaaay too wacky and in the end you end up not giving a crap about what happen because they put stupid cutaway gags even at inappropriate times. And don't even get me started on all the Designated Hero moments.

I agree with Theokal. The with Ultimate Spider-man is that it doesn't know how to use it's lighthearted-ness in the way this review seems to think it does. Batman: The Brave and the Bold did it a lot better.

I agree with Theokal. The problem with Ultimate Spider-Man is that it doesn't know how to use it's lighthearted-ness in the way this review seems to think it does. Batman: The Brave and the Bold did it a lot better.

As someone who unironically enjoys this show for what it is(read below). One would have to have an "acquired taste" for a lot this show, along with a heavy threshold for the so-so aspects(especially during season 1).

I am not sure what you mean by "acquired taste". Personnally I think the show just doesn't work. It HAS some good moments, but for the most part it just doesn't feel like a Spider-Man show.

Acquired taste: a difference of perspective and opinion.

I see.

To each their own indeed. I am still wondering what people find so enjoyable about this show, still. I mean, I am not saying it's absolutely horrible (well, except for some episodes), but really, I don't see what would make it so enjoyable.

Just a word of advice, that's an extremely negative and selfish mindset to not comprehend what other people like in something. Best thing to not worry about it, is to not think about it.

I wouldn't resort to telling someone who likes the show that "they're watch a different show than you." You never know what goes through other peoples' perspective. Me personally, I found Frozen to a dull, uninspired movie, but that's my opinion. I don't expect a lot of people to feel the same way.

Like I said, don't worry about it.

It's neither selfish nor negative, it's just the way things are: I didn't chose to not understand the appeal, I just don't get it. Now not trying to understand what others like in it, THAT would be selfish and negative. And that was just an expression to emphasize how I don't get it. I am just giving my opinion and I expect others to develop why they have a different opinion. Don't think there is anything wrong with that.

And I HAVE to worry about it, because unlike what you seem to believe it has repercussions: I mean seriously, EMH got canceled in favour of making a show set in the same universe than this. USM quite literally started what I feel is the deterioration of Marvel's cartoons.

No. You don't have to worry about it. It's a cartoon.

EMH was a cartoon. Having to worry about a cartoon being replaced by another cartoon, neither of which have an objective quality just going by opinion and popularity, is not worth it. Frankly, that is kind of selfish. Sorry to say.

I'm not going to carry on this discussion. Just keep in mind, you don't have to worry about USM or any of these new shows if you don't like them.

Let me just say that if Ultimate Spiderman is too light hearted you may be more interested in the MTV series made in 2003. That was dark. That was gritty. That was really good and may appeal more to something made to be fun and silly.

Much the same as something like My Little Pony is too saccharine and cute for some and prefer Dead Island and The Walking Dead.

The Lemster Pju: Don't give me that "it's just a cartoon" crap, thank you very much. Anime exist for all ages, and I wish Occident would grow up a bit about it and realize this. The fact something USM excist prove they don't, and I express worry about Occidental Animated Culture because of this. It's not selfish, it's an intellectual interest: I am just expressing my disappointment that Marvel was starting to do good but decided to give up quality in favour of being kid-friendly and advertising its movies. And yes, EMH is objectively better than USM: even the guys who did USM admitted they didn't put that much effort in it because it was intended to be "a kid's show and nothing more". When the writers themselves admit it, I think we can say something is wrong.

tsstevens: Hey, guess what? I don't like Dead Island. And I don't like the Walking Dead. On the other hand, I LOVE the original Teen Titans cartoon, Transformers Animated, Danny Phantom and even Ben 10. Sooooo, yeah, it's not really that I like dark and gritty things better. I just like superheroes shows who have a better balance between comedy and action, as well as at least some decent character development- and this show has neither of those two; I also have a HUGE problem with series where the main source of humor is the character being a moron and/or a jackass.

Point is perhaps this show and other media may not have been made for you. What some may not realize is that the real world does not revolve around them and around them only.

Yeah, but I don't think USM is a good show even taking the fact it was made for kids in account. I mean, there are some shows that I don't like, like Adventure Time, but I still understand the appeal it has to some people. Ultimate Spider-Man, on the other hand, feels bad even for a kid show. Of course, that's just my opinion.

This is an older thread but I feel this needs to be said to The Lemster Pju:

TV Tropes presents tropes and literary tools that help people understand and appreciate fiction. Some of the pages on this site include Animation Age Ghetto, All Animation is Disney, All Adult Animation is South Park, and Public Medium Ignorance.

All that makes me very surprised to see "Who cares, its a cartoon watched ONLY by children, and children don't deserve quality writing anyways" presented un-ironically as a serious argument on TV Tropes, a site with numerous pages and posts detailing why that argument is crap.

"The English language is like a brick wall between me and you, and 'F**K' is my chisel."
