I checked the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it has a high 86% rating. It seems to me that the only people complaining about this movie are the ones on this very wiki.
Edited by BrianKTI apologise for saying it only now, but i put Snotlout under "The Scrappy" category. Is it right or i need to delete it?
Hide / Show RepliesI apology for not replying earlier, but if it's wasn't right someone else would've already deleted it ;)
There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upOk, there's a problem with these two entries:
Broken Base: The movie itself, which is easily the most divisive of the franchise. There are neutral opinions out there, but generally speaking, people either love it or absolutely despise it.
- Contested Sequel: And very hotly so. The main point of contention with fans is that the movie seems to throw out the theme of friendship seen in the previous movies, with Toothless going to great lengths at the expense of Hiccup and Berk for a dragon he just met, and many feel that the friendship of Hiccup and Toothless deserved better. Other points of contention are the unresolved conflict with Drago, the moving of Berk, and Snotlout's attempts to woo Valka.
The first is simple: when Broken Base apply to an entire sequel (not just some elements) it's Contested Sequel which generally is when a fanbase doesn't agree wether said sequel is a good/worth follow up or not but the current entry only lists the negative parts, dismissing the part of the fandom that loved the movie. Previously, at least before listing the issues, addressed that a good part liked it, but was changed to "and very hotly so"
I suggest to remove the previous entry in Broken Base and change the Contested Sequel entry with:
- Contested Sequel: While many beloved it for the thrilling villain, the development of the characters and the action, others dislike it for the handling of Hiccup and Toothless's relationship, the leaving of Berks and for disgregarding the friendship theme of the first two movies.
I mean, if you want to add some positives without changing the negatives, that's fair, but they're valid points. Another option would be to go with Rule of Cautious Editing Judgement and just leave things at "and very hotly so." Because the fact is it's an insanely divisive movie, probably the most divisive Dreamworks has ever made.
Edited by Spacecoyote"And very hotly so" would be a zero context example
I think is better list the things since there aren't many, I just reworded the negative to make them more to the point and less complainy. I also think that the Snoutlout plotline doesn't need to mentioned because, while very cringy (even I who liked the movie didn't like his hitting on Valka) it's a minor thing that doesn't tamper the overall movie like the other examples. For Drago, I dunno, it seems his conflict was over, though the fact his return was promised and then never happened could be a case of "wasted a good plot" since, although the plot wasn't started, it was promised by the author
So, how about something like this?
- Contested Sequel: While many beloveit for the thrilling villain, the development of the characters and the action, others dislike it for the handling of Hiccup and Toothless's friendship, disgregarding the theme of friendship seen in the previous movies and the poorly motivated moving of Berk.
Make your own changes to this, so we can reach an accord
There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upContested Sequel: And very hotly so. It's easily the most divisive of the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, and very possibly the most divisive Dreamworks film thus far.
Nice and clean. Everyone wins.
mmmmh ok, sounds a bit Zero contest, but hey, at least we agree
There isn't an impossible dream, there are only people who give upI want to argue against the reason the Internet Backdraft trope was re-added using these screenshots.
These people seem to be genuinely angry about Toothless having a love interest, not because it’s cliché, but because his love interest is female.
Edited by Sugarp1e1 Ryoko. Hide / Show RepliesIt shouldn't be up. It isn't a valid example, and this user is edit warring so that's already bad.
Muramasa got.A single screenshot of "It's pride month and I shouldn't have to deal with this straight nonsense" is a very flimsy justification for removing a trope. The fandom right now is flooded very valid reasons not to like this and just as many people who are defending it. That said, ATT suggested "Tainted By the Preview", so that's what I went with.
I would suggest Tainted by the Preview with the point being that it is framed as people being upset at the idea of a romantic subplot as the driving force of the film. People seem to be projecting a lot of their own headcanons about the film series and that really isn't lining up with what actually is in the films. Plus people seem to forget that Toothless is the Last of His Kind, so a love interest isn't a bad idea. I also do wanna mention this was based off a poster for the movie, so that does set the bar a bit low for actual facts about the movie.
Muramasa got.The link I showed wasn't a single screenshot; it was three screenshots. One of a single post, and two of multiple tweets. All of which were whining about heterosexuality being "forced" onto dragons.
Ryoko.
This movie has similar, or identical, scores to the previous ones in all of IM Db, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and Cinemascore, while quite a few of the descriptions present it as if the movie is split at the middle when it comes to the audience. For starters, the statement that it is the most divisive Dreamworks movie just doesn't fly; just off the top of my head, Shrek 4 has actual divisive ratings, and it's far from the only dreamworks movie with such (and all of them far, far less well received than HTTYDTHW).
However, since it has the ROCEJ potholed, I'm not gonna edit it, but I'm curious as to what's the evidence for such a claim.
