I was wondering if the fans "forgetting" Kagami's name counts as a Play-Along Meme, or if it's not quite as widespread as I thought.

Every conversation I've ever seen about Kagami did the Play-Along Meme.

  • Designated Hero: ABIS is a secret police department that forcefully drugs and psychs with witnesses and suspects who are unwilling or unable to talk. Aiba also frequently hacks into people personal devices and records to get information without any type of warrant or permission to do so. Date even questions the ethics of some of their actions at times. Despite their highly questionable ethics, at no point is ABIS treated in-story as anything but noble and legitimate.

While this may sound questionable when put it this way, the thing is, this isn't that far from what cops already do (except for the warrant part), and they're shown in the story to use this tech not to abuse people's rights but to catch a Serial Killer before more people die. While the system has a POTENTIAL for abuse, we've never seen anyone actually abusing it. The sole exception is Shizue helping Hayato when he comes to her regarding Falco's killings, but even then it's still used to protect Hitomi and Rohan is already responsible for the Falco's killings anyway. While you can argue about whether or not ABIS really existing would be a good thing, when you look at their actions in the story, it's clear they're pretty heroic.

* Accidental Aesop: Don't ignore your loved ones' mental health and seek treatment if it becomes necessary. A number of different characters in the game suffer from some form of mental illness, ranging from Iris' brain tumor, Mayumi's dementia, Mizuki's muteness, and so forth. One thing that all of them have in common is that they had loved ones who cared about them and they were all able to receive treatment of some kind. However, unlike many of the other characters, at no point is it indicated that Saito received any treatment for his condition. Saito's condition was not untreatable by any means, Date had the exact same condition as Saito for 6 years yet received medication from Aiba and was able to form healthy relationships. In Saito's Motive Rant on the annihilation route, at no point does he indicate that So had him see any sort of therapist, as that would require So to actually give a shit about his son's mental health. Given the game's themes about love and family and that So Sejima is shown to be a self-centered Jerkass throughout the game, it's not too far of a stretch to think that Saito may have become a far better person had he been raised in a more loving family. And while that by no means excuses Saito from everything he did, it's worth noting that So is arguably responsible, although only partially, for how his son turned out.

I had previously left this part invisible with the comment "Why is this is tagged as AccidentalAesop instead of CentralTheme when the game has actual bits of exposition on brain chemistry?", and now it was added back to the page without any addressing to the question. What would make one assume Somnium Files is only unintentionally about mental health?

  • Ass Pull: A very mild one occers at the Dance Party Ending that you recive at the end of one of the routes. When Hitomi was dancing her right arm was able to MOVE again despite it being rendered unfunctionable after getting shot and destroying the nerves on her shoulder. Probably more for Rule of Funny.
I wouldn't consider this an asspull for two reasons. First, it's not a plot point, second, this was just one of many weird things in a scene that was completely bizzare to begin with, so it would be easier to just count the whole thing as a BLAM.
  • A more serious one after the first Somnium; it's stated in game that you psync Mizuki both in an attempt to get clues and heal her mute state, and in one route, you succeed the second half of that. The other route, you fail, and Mizuki is sent back to the hospital. The ass pull comes when Mizuki breaks out of the hospital, goes home, texts her teacher, Hitomi, to come spend the night while you're out doing more investigation things... and the very next morning she's no longer mute.
It's been established that Mizuki's aphonia was psychosomatic and while the Psync was a way to help her, it was never stated to be the only way to help her. So it's perfectly plausible and understandable that Hitomi's presence would calm her down enough to get through that mental block. Especially when both Aiba and Hitomi helped her by hugging her.

  • What An Idiot: In Iris's route, Date and Iris run into a certain group of people who attack them. Later, Iris tells Date that a certain secret organization is after her, making Date suspect those people may have been after her. Date promises to keep Iris safe from another kidnapping attempt.
    • You'd Expect: Date to leave Iris under Kumakuras' protection. Sure, he promised to protect her, but without Aiba, he's not as effective at using his quite futuristic weaponry. Earlier in the very same route, Aiba had once run out of batteries. If such thing happened during another kidnapping attempt, Iris would be kidnapped. Meanwhile, the boss of the Kumakuras' gang is Iris's fan, and even offers to protect her. The gang has safety in numbers (at least three members that we know of), and more standard but efficient weaponry than Date.
    • Instead: Date rejects Moma's offer to keep Iris safe at his gang's place, and leaves with her alone.
    • As a Result: During the next encounter with the group, Iris gets kidnapped.
Okay, i'm confused. First of all, Moma couldn't exactly use the gang to protect Iris, because he couldn't reveal that he's an A-set fan. It would be just Moma alone. Secondly, Iris getting captured had nothing to do with Aiba being out of the picture, it just turned out that Aiba's creator was the one behind the attempt, something Date couldn't foresee. Thirdly, not as effective is still very effective, as Date is a trained cop and a former Serial-Killer Killer. WITH Aiba he's practically a one-man army. And finally, even if Moma turned out to be a good guy, he's still a Yakuza, not entirely trustworthy individual, why would Date trust him over his own skills? The example seems utterly bizzare.
