No it's not. The definition of the trope is that a character doesn't use an already established power in a situation where it would have been useful. Since the effectiveness of the power here is entirely speculative (we've only seen the crystals work on a unicorn's horn), that part of the trope isn't fulfilled. Thus the example is removed on the ground that Examples Are Not Arguable.
Untrue for 2 reasons:
1. We saw them work on Cadance, an Alicorn, in Part 1.
2. We've also seen them in "cage" form (which lacks the horn-based restriction and just has to surround its target(s)).
Edited by PeridonyxA preview for Issue 97 (part of "Season 10," which is considered canon) shows Discord wearing one of Abyssinia's Power Nullifier collars for magical prisoners, and it affects him just like anypony else.
Yet Pony Sauron's unique, specialized crystals can't do the same? Now it's my turn to have my doubts.
Edited by Teleport_TedThat is still speculative, hence still arguable, i.e. not fit to be mentioned for an objective trope.
I have a couple tropes that need to be added. If there are more, then I'll add onto this.
- Comically Missing the Point: Pinkie Pie thinks Mr. and Mrs. Cake (with the twins Pound and Pumpkin) baking a terrible cake is more important than them being brainwashed.
- Please Wake Up: Fluttershy begs this of Discord when he appears to be dead.
The first one is more Skewed Priorities than Comically Missing the Point.
The second one is fine, although "beg this" should be avoided; putting Fluttershy's actual quote would be better.
I have my doubts about the Forgot About His Powers example.
Sombra's crystals could nullify the magic of a unicorn... whether they can work at all on a Chaos spirit like Discord is entirely speculative.
