Asking this in case it's too controversial - since this page features real life corporate examples, would Elon Musk's generally disliked takeover of Twitter be applicable?

"Tyrant takes the helm", seriously? What was wrong with "the umbridge", when was it changed?

About two months ago. The name was changed because it was determined to be unclear and somewhat confusing. Reasons:

  1. It was named after a character. Contrary to what some might think, not everyone has read/watched Harry Potter.
  2. Even to those familiar with the character, the name was confusing. It is unclear by the title whether it indicates a disliked character, a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, someone blatantly evil, an evil person who loves kittens, or someone who takes over a position previously held by a good person and acts like a tyrant. The trope is the latter. It's not the most memorable part of her character, and people kept assuming other meanings.
  3. It was misused frequently to mean the character herself, rather than the trope. People would pothole it in inappropriate locations, leading to confusing.

All and all, the trope was renamed because it was unclear, confusing, and misleading. If you want to read, the Trope Repair Shop discussion is here.

This trope could also be called "The Scar" or "The Palpatine". I think they're better examples of this trope than Umbridge. If she's the Trope Namer for anything, it should be Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, Sadist Teacher, or Hate Sink.

Heck, I just assumed it would be "The Queeg." This is definitely less confusing.

"In order to ensure our security and continuing stability, The Republic will be reorganized into the first Galactic Empire, for a safe and secure society!"

I deleted this from the main page as I feel it's an indication of this trope drifting from its intended meaning. It's meant to refer to a bad guy taking over for an episode or story arc. The character quoted ruled over an entire galaxy for twenty years. Thus, we lose all distinction between "Tyrant Takes The Helm" and "any tyrant".

I propose the constraint that a tyrant cannot be in power for longer than an in-universe year and still qualify for this trope. After all, anyone in power for longer than that is clearly no longer a "temporary" ruler. Any thoughts?

I pulled the image because it appears to have been added without discussion and it's not even close to an example of the trope. It's Just A Face And A Caption. If anyone objects to this, I'll start a thread on Image Pickin', but for now, I'll leave it.

Image Pickin' thread is needed to pull a pic. Please go there before acting unilaterally.
