With regard to wondering where the kids come from when this trope is played straight, very few popular positions actually require that much lateral space. The double bed just facilitates the cuddling afterwards.

Unknown Troper:"Obviously a Dead Horse Trope now, though it might crop up from time to time in parody." Hmm... Is this a Dead Horse Trope or a Discredited Trope? I thought a Dead Horse Trope was when the trope is not only irrelevant today, but has also been parodied to death. The latter portion of that sentence suggests that it's still ripe for parody.
I reworded it to reflect that it's not quite a Dead Horse Trope.

The trope as described states that this was a TV rule made specifically for television, which is just false. Anyone who has watched old films from the 30s and the 40s knows that couples in that era were virtually never shown sharing a bed, at least not in American films. I have revised the definition accordingly.
