Okay, I need an answer - the entry on Makoto from Red String brings up a wrinkle in this trope. What if the character has a lot of screentime and storylines...but every freaking one of those storylines is only about how much he loves the main character and obsesses over her? And then eventually he does start dating her, but his entire storyline is still only about how much he loves her and he has no interests outside of it?

Does that end up disqualifying him because a romantic lead in a romance could reasonably be expected to have "I want to date the main character!" as a motivation? Or is he the most fleshed out Satellite Love Interest in the universe?

The way i see it, yes, it would be Satellite Love Interest. This isn't how much plot-relevance or characterisation character receives. it's about how much of this plot-relevance and characterisation is being love interest and how much isn't. If the latter doesn't exist, it's this, no matter how fleshed out the romance arc is.

Zeke: I've cut the Saber entry — there's much more to her than her relationship with Shirou. You might have a case with Sakura, who has quite consciously made Shirou the centre of her life, but "shallow" is still a bit much. If you want a TYPE-MOON entry, try Sacchin. (Come to think of it, I'll add her.)

Not sure if that's fair towards her as she never was allowed to progress beyond her bit role.

Removed the Digimon example. The spouses of the Digidestined that married outside the group are actually NEVER seen, so accusing them to be this when we don't even know what kind of persons they are or not sounds borderline desperate.

Also, I don't like how the "SLI!" accusation is immediately followed by reducing Sora ans Hikari to their "roles" as Taichi and Daisuke's respective crushes. Double Standard, anyone? Yeah, because apparently it's a-okay to point fingers and whine about the unseen wives/husbands, while only mentioning Sora and Kari in regards to how Tai and Dai romantically liked them, when neither girl was merely reduced to love interests. (Even worse because, um, Taichi was mature enough to get over his "heartbreak" in less than 24 hours! He even kissed another girl in the cheek in that same mini-arc!)

So yeah, it's gone.

Shallow Love Interest renamed to Satellite Love Interest per TRS thread

Bambi's gals are not shallow love interests. Each one has different mannerisms and personality, suiting each of the boys. And just because the latter two only have one scene, doesn't mean they can't make an impact.

Faline is the most fleshed out. When we first meet her in the film, we can see that Faline is lively, active, outgoing, spirited, giggly, energetic, and super cute. When we meet her again as an adult, she is calmer, but her playful nature still shows when she laughs at Bambi falling over, and again when he gets flowers in his antlers.

Thumper's girl is a voluptuous whore. She is very sensuous and passionate and seductive. She wears heavy makeup and waggles her hips and dewlap (bunny rack) when she walks towards Thumper. When she gasps and says "Ohh" when she first sees Thumper, this reaction and noises are very sexual. Obviously she is the most wanton, forward and carnal of the three girls.

Flower's girl is coquettish and sweet and gentle, similar to Flower himself. She's a little bit shy too, it shows in her "peek-a-boo" flirting technique, hiding in the flower hedge, and hiding behind and hugging her own tail. She and Flower are so similar, like a mirror image. Their tails are inverted of each other. They are definitely equals and perfect for each other.

I took off the Harry Potter stuff for being blatantly false. I won't say the romances were well-written, but none of the characters are shallow love interests.

happened again. Ginny being a shallow love interest is YMMV. She was a character in the books long before she and Harry got together with plenty of non-Harry-focused dialogue, and they have several things in common.

I removed Isabella from Phineas And Ferb as an example. Yeah, she loves Phineas, but that's not her sole purpose. Her innocence and girliness is sometimes played up as a part of the whole dynamic, and storyline-wise she is necessary because she organizes a girl scout troop to act as Phineas and Ferb's little helpers.

I also changed the Jeremy example; it said he might be this, when in actuality he used to be.

AAAAAAAGHHHH! I had a language filter on accidentally and it messed up a lot of the page. I'm so sorry. I'll try to fix it.

EDIT: Freak out over; page fixed. Wonder what other pages I've done this to...

Somebody should do something about the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha example with Yuuno. It sounds waaaay Natter-like. I'm not really sure if I should actually remove it, though.

Changed all mentions of Takeshi Obata in the Death Note and Bakuman entries to Tsumugi Ohba. People keep forgetting that Obata only does the art and Ohba writes the story. If there's a problem Shallow Love Interests existing, it's Ohba's fault.

Can someone add "Love Interest Non-Essential To Story" aka LINETS to the alt titles? I immediately thought of Nostalgia chick's catchphrase for this but I can't figure out how to create alt titles. :-/

Does Talia Al Ghul in Batman The Animated Series really qualify? Take away her role as Bruce's love interest and she's still a character: a daughter following in her father's footsteps to attain his goal, yet also bears resentment towards him for not treating her with the same value that he would a son.

Cutting the I-Pin entry from Katekyo Hitman Reborn - her shallow crush on Hibari has not much to do with the trope Shallow Love Interest, it's a gag crush completely independent of their known personalities, what I mean to say is, I-Pin HAS a personality even without Hibari in the picture
