I'm confused about the "quality" part. There could be very good fanfiction, and at the same time there could be very lousy canon.

Tropes Are Not Bad.

The point I attempted to make in the original description was that, once a property has evolved past the original creators, there's no particular reason to consider the stories published by the license holder to be more VALID than the stories created by people who aren't collecting a paycheck from a corporation.

If a sufficiently established franchise is indistinguishable from fanfiction, won't this also mean that Sturgeons Law gets invoked?

Sturgeon's Law is a universal constant.

Would Dragon Ball be an example?

Some of the examples on this page are identical to ones on Promoted Fanboy. Is there a crucial difference between the two tropes that isn't coming across in the description? At times it just seems like Running the Asylum is just Promoted Fanboy with a slightly more negative tone.

Perhaps we should delineate clearly between examples of fans becoming showrunners, directors, producers etc. (i.e. in creative control of the work) and those who simply have gained employment on the thing they love.

    Anime & Manga

AFAIK, lots of the complains on GSD come from an Unpleasable Fanbase that goes to MANY extremes to bash the creators just because they don't like the changes, and reach extremes like hoping for the head writer's death out of pure resentment. So I'm putting it here.

I know it's a universally-loathed comic but can make the caption be a little less whiny? Wallbanger is a Darth Wiki trope for a reason.

On the Yahtzee bit, here's an addition from not long before the last time it was deleted in February. Square brackets mine.

  • The series [that he gave the example from] is actually headed by one of the original writers, Ron Gilbert [co-creator, and another of the original writers] stopped by to brainstorm ideas, and several other people on the team also worked on previous series. Perhaps they enjoy self-referencing too much, but in regards to fans being in charge, Yahtzee didn't do his research.
