This trope seems to blur together two different things: Defending lazy art and defending deliberately confounding or frustrating art. That is, there's a difference between "it's supposed to suck" and "it doesn't matter if it sucks" and this page treats them as the same.

For instance, survival horror games' clunky controls aren't "not supposed to be art"... they ARE supposed to be art. It's just the artistic choice is annoying to players, which is (supposedly) the point.

"Doug Walker himself used to use this argument in his defense towards nit-pickers, saying that it wasn't fair for free, ammeter entertainment (this was just when they were beginning to receive ad revenue) to be critiqued on the same level as mainstream entertainment. Once Channel Awesome began establishing itself as a legitimate business, however, he was told to stop."

Taken this off because I legit can't remember him ever saying that, let alone being told to stop. This commentary has him saying the exact opposite.

I'm not sure if it's a trope yet and if it is what the name to look for is—but occasionally you see this phrase or its equivalent popping up when something that is not supposed to win Oscars does. (Think 'when something like an action move wins over the Oscar Bait dramas.')

Anybody know if it exists yet, and if it doesn't if it's worth tossing onto YKTTW? I can only think of a case (Maus) so there might simply not be enough examples.

So a lot of these things are less "this wasn't supposed to be good" and more "This has a target audience consisting of small children, whose tastes include things adults don't enjoy". "You're not part of the intended target audience" is a perfectly valid explanation for why you don't like an otherwise good movie. It's like if a reviewer said Street Fighter Alpha was a bad game because he didn't like fighting games. I'm going to delete all of those. If anyone wants to bring them back, they're welcome to.

Deleting the entry on Scary Movie and company. Someone missed the point of the page — being a "basic" comedy doesn't excuse the movie from criticism. (For reference, silly movies with minimal depth can be done right. This doesn't mean that they're inherently good at it.)

Uhh, the page quote is very stream of consciousness, run-on and hard to read.

And that's why I deleted it.
