I've seen the movie and read the the book. It wasn't all that faithful. Jim's dad leaves instead of dying pretty much off screen, Arrow was a drunkard jerk, Ben Gunn was a far greater help to the loyal crew (although Disney would never mention the two pirates who throats he cut in their sleep), and there were several loyal servants and crewmen who helped out the main characters (and many of them died at the hands of the pirates).
So, faithful as Disney could make it without saying the 'D' word while making Ben the Butt Monkey is more accurate.
